Audi's V8 has less power than the Taurus, and doesn't have forced induction. For not having any boost, and having less power, I'd say that was pretty good. And you have the fit, and finish of an Audi, and not a Ford. Let's see that Taurus go up against the S6, or RS6. Now that's a different story!

The 2012 Ford Mustang V6 is $40,000 cheaper than an A7 and does 0 - 60 in 5.1 seconds. The Boss 302 is $20,000 cheaper and does 0 - 60 in 3.9 seconds. The Cadillac CTS - V starts at around the same price as the A7 and does 0 - 60 in 3.9 seconds with the same luxury features and four doors as well. Also, the two Mustangs are have naturally aspirated engines. Not the A7.
I definitely think that Ford is making the best cars in their history, but overall an Audi 4.2L V8 + Quattro would most likely make for a nicer, smoother, more premium ride...things on paper and things in practice are rarely the same
buick was doing this in the 80's with the regal t-type and the infomous grandnational same car only black paint. i still own mine and with todays modern up grades it still destroys almost anything in straight line acceleration and is rear wheel drive. i love the new taurus but buick was doing it when you all were sucking on your mothers tits for breast milk oh and todays grandnationals and those sneaky t-types can go quater mile times in the 8's

The comparison is now moot as the Audi A6 no longer offers a V8. The engine options are a boosted four cylinder or blown six. I'm pretty certain, the latter can more than hold it's own versus the SHO. ....and of course the S6 would take care of its business as expected.
MY FUCKIN GOODNESS, I WANT THE 2011 TAURUS SHO PERFORMANCE PACKAGE!! Forget the 2011 Charger, I'm getting the Grey Taurus all wheel drive with the spoiler, sunroof, push button start, and nav system. The older Tauruses looked weak and boring, this new model got my attention when it first got out.
For instance, I was in South Beach Miami and there were a couple of days of horrible rain storms. Many roads had flooded enough to where water got into some really nice cars that were there.
The only vehicles that went through all that unscathed were SUVs, trucks and crossovers with enough ground clearance to where that wasn't a problem.
I think I'll keep my GMC Envoy, thank you very much.
Not that I don't like these cars, but the higher ground clearance comes in handy where I live. It rains here often, especially in the summer, and the roads get flooded easily.
It would suck to drive a beautiful Ford Taurus SHO or an Audi A6 and then unintentionally trek through a flooded section of roadway that was deep enough for the engines to ingest water and hydrolock.

The SHO kinda reminds me of the S4 v6-bi turbo.
Just because it's not german doesn't mean it's crap, some models from the American big 3 are actually on par with a lot of german cars.

But neither of the cars are going to be true performance cars, they are sedan's that people will most likely use for daily driving. The balance between power and mileage is pretty good.
The AWD comes in handy when the weather goes to hell.
My only concern, is it reliable? Forced induction cars (particularly North American cars) have some reputation for being less than totally reliable. That's my only real reservation about the new SHO. Other than that, it's a lot of bang for the buck.

The SHO would still blow it away, the SHO is AWD, has a better all around power band, and is about 650 pounds lighter than the Audi. Dont get me wrong, I love Audi's. But Ford has REALLY stepped their game up with their cars recently, and the 2010+ SHO is proof of it.

Since we have come to be informed that this 4.2L A6 can actually produce 414 hp undetuned, not 345, it is another justification for the price. Also, this A6 has a 57/43 weight distribution, unlike the SHO's 60/40, making it easier for the A6 to turn more sharply.
Good job Ford....for beating a FIVE YEAR OLDER car. When Audi downsizes and puts a couple of turbos Ford is going to wonder what hit it. Turbos are the last thing you put after trying to put more power whlie still be naturally aspirated.

@plehdehgame actually it's at least 4 years apart. The engine first appeared in the B7 RS4 in 2006 and this version in the A6 is detuned so it produces less horsepower than the RS4 did and has less than the SHO overall so it should beat it.

@colderbeer If you want to know about Turbo American cars, look into the Buick Grand National. It did 0-60 in the 5 second region back in 1986. The turbo 3.8 V6 made so much power, GM had to lie about its specs, since they didn't want people to know it made more power than the stock Corvette.
@therealsatan Porsche did what in 1973? The guy asked about American cars with Turbos. Sorry, Porsche can't do that, as they are German. If you are saying they made a fast car with a Turbo, that is fine. No one claimed the Grand National to be the "first" or "only" turbo car. You also need to understand that your two Porsche cost dramatically more money than the Buick. So the did it with a smaller 6 cylinder for a lot more money. ;o) GM was doing this on a budget.
@therealsatan the difference is when Porsche did it in those years the turbos that they put on those cars you would hit the gas and wait...... then bam all of a sudden the turbo would kick it and give you a huge power boost when you least expected it.
I would take the SHO over an Audi. Anyone that owns an Audi outside of the warranty period is just asking for very expensive trouble. I have owned a repair business for over 5 years and worked as a Mercedes tech for several years before that and German cars are much more expensive to repair by far. I love the look of Audis and the design, but no way would I keep one outside of the warranty period.
@GMCman82 That is a good question, I have found them all to be a little crappy, but in different ways. I can probably think of common problems with most brands. I would say one of the most relaible cars I have seen are Toyota/Lexus. They usually require maintenance and that is about it. I recently saw a Ford E250 van with over 400K miles and it was all original. The worst are VW Passats IMO. To do the timing belt, the entire nose has to be moved forward.

buick was doing this in the 80's with the regal t-type and the infomous grandnational same car only black paint. i still own mine and with todays modern up grades it still destroys almost anything in straight line acceleration and is rear wheel drive. i love the new taurus but buick was doing it when you all were sucking on your mothers tits for breast milk oh and todays grandnationals and those sneaky t-types can go quater mile times in the 8's

The comparison is now moot as the Audi A6 no longer offers a V8. The engine options are a boosted four cylinder or blown six. I'm pretty certain, the latter can more than hold it's own versus the SHO. ....and of course the S6 would take care of its business as expected.

For instance, I was in South Beach Miami and there were a couple of days of horrible rain storms. Many roads had flooded enough to where water got into some really nice cars that were there.
The only vehicles that went through all that unscathed were SUVs, trucks and crossovers with enough ground clearance to where that wasn't a problem.

Not that I don't like these cars, but the higher ground clearance comes in handy where I live. It rains here often, especially in the summer, and the roads get flooded easily.
It would suck to drive a beautiful Ford Taurus SHO or an Audi A6 and then unintentionally trek through a flooded section of roadway that was deep enough for the engines to ingest water and hydrolock.

Also, if anyone thinks a Z06 or ZR1 is rubbish and has the ignorant mentality that Corvettes are straight line cars, you haven't been to a track and seen how modern American cars can do, ZR1 kills 99% of all German cars around the the Nurburgring.

Power of a V8 with the fuel economy of a V6?
The 5.0 V8 in the Mustang gets 18/26, while the Taurus V6 does worse with 17/25.
Better switch that to 'Power of a V6 with the fuel economy of a V8'

But neither of the cars are going to be true performance cars, they are sedan's that people will most likely use for daily driving. So what it comes down to is quality I would gladly take a much nicer car that is a second slower because all these car will be is a daily driver with a little bit of power.

The looks are neither here nor there.
The feature content is high.
The balance between power and mileage is pretty good.
The AWD comes in handy when the weather goes to hell.
My only concern, is it reliable? Forced induction cars (particularly North American cars) have some reputation for being less than totally reliable. That's my only real reservation about the new SHO. Other than that, it's a lot of bang for the buck.

The SHO would still blow it away, the SHO is AWD, has a better all around power band, and is about 650 pounds lighter than the Audi. Dont get me wrong, I love Audi's. Since we have come to be informed that this 4.2L A6 can actually produce 414 hp undetuned, not 345, it is another justification for the price. Also, this A6 has a 57/43 weight distribution, unlike the SHO's 60/40, making it easier for the A6 to turn more sharply.

@plehdehgame actually it's at least 4 years apart. The engine first appeared in the B7 RS4 in 2006 and this version in the A6 is detuned so it produces less horsepower than the RS4 did and has less than the SHO overall so it should beat it.

@colderbeer If you want to know about Turbo American cars, look into the Buick Grand National. It did 0-60 in the 5 second region back in 1986. The turbo 3.8 V6 made so much power, GM had to lie about its specs, since they didn't want people to know it made more power than the stock Corvette.

If you are saying they made a fast car with a Turbo, that is fine. No one claimed the Grand National to be the "first" or "only" turbo car. You also need to understand that your two Porsche cost dramatically more money than the Buick. So the did it with a smaller 6 cylinder for a lot more money. ;o) GM was doing this on a budget.

I would take the SHO over an Audi. Anyone that owns an Audi outside of the warranty period is just asking for very expensive trouble. I have owned a repair business for over 5 years and worked as a Mercedes tech for several years before that and German cars are much more expensive to repair by far. I love the look of Audis and the design, but no way would I keep one outside of the warranty period.

@GMCman82 That is a good question, I have found them all to be a little crappy, but in different ways. I can probably think of common problems with most brands. I would say one of the most relaible cars I have seen are Toyota/Lexus. They usually require maintenance and that is about it. I recently saw a Ford E250 van with over 400K miles and it was all original. The worst are VW Passats IMO. To do the timing belt, the entire nose has to be moved forward.

@Marc99GT cool, eventually every car is a money pit, if the chevy cruize eco is all its cracked up to be i am thinking of getting one, or i might wait to see buicks version of the cruize will be like , if its better and dont cost all that much more i may get it instead. plus i kinda like the buicks 220hp versus the cruize's 148, both seem great. i just bought an 07 slt 4x4 envoy 4.2 I6. my mpg is low 13's right now mostly highway driven. i think the whole ecm needs reset. has 4 or 5 of them.
