My sister kept talking about how this video made her cry, and I had never seen it before. One time she pissed me off, so I started playing it next to her and ended up crying even more than she did ;_; Doggy!
If anyone is wondering: the original music to this video can be found here: /watch?v=OopWVyrE3G8 . It's Called "Moan" and it was made by Trentemoller.
@aloh000 For us humans going to space could be the most awesome experience which can put glory on our name, but for a dog it can be something really frightening and incomprehensible, for them glory lies in having a caring family with freedom to play and enjoy a short life. She sacrificed a lot in the sake of human endeavor.
@aloh000 Believe it or not, Laika's actual Russian name was Kudryavka, meaning "Little Curly". There was no expectation of survival. I wish humans weren't so insensitive.
@franciscojavierm It doesn't matter. How you feel doesn't determine greatness. Some dogs live and die in pain in gutters. Laika lived and died in pain in space.
@franciscojavierm She died with her heart rate at 240, the RSF didn't give her enough oxygen. She was asleep when she died. measuring these factors, NASA believes she died dreaming of when one of the scientists took her in to play, knowing she had so little time left to live. It's quite sad. Even though Laika opened up a whole new door for society, she died, undoubtfullly from a lack of oxygen. Her mission was to orbit Earth and reenter, and they knew she wouldn't come back safely.
@SparklezBakery I think the worst is the fact that she must has been really scared those couple hours she was strapped to the capsule. Her death was just the ending to the most traumatic experience in her brief life.
@franciscojavierm They prefer strays as they don't have any attachment to this brutal world. Plus, they are used to the cold and harsh conditions, such as hunger. She was alive for exactly 6 hours.
@SparklezBakery So they took her away from the streets just to kill her inside a can.
Oleg Gazenko, one of the scientists responsible for sending Laika into space, expressed regret for allowing her to die:
"Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I'm sorry about it. We shouldn't have done it... We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog"
@franciscojavierm Basically, as they didn't even think any living thing could survive the gravity of the lift off. Gazenko expressed his thoughts very well, but you can't take something like that back. I wouldn't prefer that Laika didn't go on the mission either, though. Although, I don't prefer Laika on the streets. Laika was not a hero. Laika was beyond that. The only thing that Oleg Gazenko did is give us a reason to cry. The best thing would be just to somehow get her to survive.
@franciscojavierm I noticed that my other comment didn't express my thoughts very well. I then noticed that I couldn't even explain my thoughts accurately. Excuse the seemed rudeness of my comment.
@SparklezBakery Not to worry, I understood your main point . Sadly the Sputnik 2 was never meant to be retrieved so it was basically a one way trip. I don't think Gazenko regrets the mission itself, but the fact of sending her to die just for the sake of sending something alive to orbit. I think delaying the mission a little bit in order to apply a retrievable design would have been more ethically responsible and more scientifically valuable as they could have had more feedback.
@franciscojavierm I don't have anything to say to that. I agree in every way with you. That is exactly what I was trying to get at with my other comment. Although, before I post this comment, I'd like to comment on how awesome your profile picture is. XD Lol, if it's what I think it is, then I'm totally stealing the picture. *trollface*

@novacorponline thank you for correcting me. nw that i think of it, humans are not so inferior to other organisms. every human should be glad that they were born as a dominate species.
@novacorponline i would disagree, interrupting the way nature works is pretty bad. plus humans destroyed more than we protect. take the u.s.a for example, we make money to make us happy by destroying narure's creation (ex. wood). if you dont also know that paper money is made out of wood, so to make money we have to destroy the worlds habittats
@piepoper66 I'm sorry, the US dollar is made from a blend of Cotton and Linen, which are both of which are from plants that are grown and harvested, not annihilated. In addition, the kind of logging you are talking about is 'clear cut' logging, and is but one of many logging techniques, and while it has nice dramatic look to it, is not as destructive as it sounds. It cuts a select area and then lets the forest regrow, it doesn't target a whole forest and wipe it all out.
American money is actually made out of some kind of thin fabric. If you look closely, there are individual strands of string. Other than that, I do agree.

I've seen this like a thousand times and it always makes me cry. I mean, the song is emotional enough by itself, but that montage adds a lot to it, and it brings me to tears every single time. Laika, you are a hero.
'Before the launch, one of the scientists took Laika home to play with his children. In a book chronicling the story of Soviet space medicine, Dr. Vladimir Yazdovsky wrote, "I wanted to do something nice for her: She had so little time left to live." '
A budhist monk walks up to a hot dog vendor and the hot dog vender asks "What can I get for you" and the Budhist monk thinks for a few minutes and eventually says "Make me one with everything".
@TheInnociv This beckons to ask why can you say such pretentious things? You cannot simply say because something has the ability to lose it's innocence it is inherently bad, can you not?
@TheInnociv Innocence doesn't exist, who on Earth taught you that it does? No creature "deserves" anything, no matter what they do. Since when was natured obliged to give you something because you "deserve" it. What a silly concept. What is innocence anyway? Naught but a concept. Humans are just as much a wild animal as anything else. The same things drive us. The only difference is that we have a different level (notice I don't say higher) of thinking, and invent silly concepts like innocence.
I hate when people are like "why are you crying?! You're one of those evil human-centrists who supports animal testing the rest of the time!" and/or "It really was just a dog!"
But, you know, humans have died for the cause of pushing the boundaries of humanity, too. Laika is a cute container for all that sadness.
What would you do? Given the choice between eventual miserable death on the streets of Moscow, or living forever in the hearts you leave behind?
What's done, is done. Laika was just one historical animal who died on the hands of Natures biggest mistake. Instead of complaining about it, we should be out there, helping animals who can be saved.
@happyhunterfish I hate when people consider humans to somehow be inferior to every other animal in existence. What makes us so inferior? Are we inferior because we have a higher morality system than 'be nice to stronger one'? Is it because we have the ability to rationalize and think logically? Human beings are not a mistake. The only mistake here is you judging the worth of a creature soley by it's adorable factor because i know you don't mourn the deaths of spiders and roaches.
@novacorponline That's a foul assumption, friend. Many people, including myself, always mourn an unjustified death - no matter which creature it is that is killed. And humans judge eachother by the system of 'be nice to the one who will give me the most personal gain' so, in reality, are we really that different?
@TheSevenCamels I never said the song wasn't good; just that the opinion that humans are arbitrarily inferior to every more adorable creature is wrong. Most of the 'wrongs' humans do, you can find in the animal kingdom as well. But lets not just focus on only the bad parts; the human race is also the only species on earth that actively works hard to help and protect other species to stop their extinction. The human race is not nearly as pure evil as many environmentalists would have you believe.
@novacorponline I hate how people protect animals that you feel like you could hug or pet and not protect animals that look ugly, but are a valuable part of our ecosystem. Like spiders, sharks, and that gross prehistoric giant-salamander thing in New York that was being killed by toxins in the mud it lived in, you know which one I'm talking about.
@novacorponline We aren't inferior, not in the least bit, and because we are such an evolved race, we should look after animals weaker than us. Dogs and Cats depend on us daily, and it is when you decide to break those bonds of trust that you become an inferior race.
@paigerr4971 sorry i was being sarcastic; the person I was replying to called humanity 'natures greatest mistake' and personally i feel that we are exactly the opposite of that.
@novacorponline I actually do feel sad when spiders and roaches die. I make sure to leave spiders alone and take roaches outside without harming them.
Why can't people just care for all living things, from dogs to spiders to other humans?
@Mingaggins Because there is such a thing called the food chain --- a thing we spent millions of years to climb on top of. Unnecessary killing should be avoided, but survival (as in eating) and advancing science and technology for the survival of future generations (as in lab animals) are absolute necessary sacrifices. And to @TheDemonKing100, please don't throw this Nazi crap around. Other animals don't kill their own kind and so shouldn't we. It is a completely different thing.
@pigberto Eating meat is "unnecessary killing" and can be easily avoided. At this point in human history, we have absolutely no need to continue eating meat, especially not with the brutal and cruel factory farming system.
@kilvasify humans are one of the only animals to even care about each other and other species. for all our problems, at least we try. at least we have the capacity to care.
@kilvasify Yes. Because animals never kill eachother, kill other animals (especially not for fun, that would be insane. Dogs chase rabbits because they want to give them hugs), animals never misbehave, and animals always do what's right for the invironment.
@Araclain ....almost right....i'm pretty sure that if we wouldn't exist this world would be a better place...because we feel like we are the pinnacle of creation...and that made us a bit to cocky....
@kilvasify So, our species is horrible because some people do bad things, despite the good things others do, and the number of people who are just neutral or unable to affect anything in the larger scale? Taking that philosophy, dogs are just as horrible because a few of them are vicious to even people who try to be nice to them. You cannot hold people to a higher standard than animals, yet consider them worse.
@novacorponline I already told you....this world would be better without us...that's all...we created greed, hate and perversion....when we're supposed to be smarter...some people would kill or destroy for "money"...the money that WE created to create balance...I dunno if we're worse...we're simply ridiculous I guess
@kilvasify no. The world would just 'be' without us. You should check how hunting animals behave, specifically revolving around the 'alphas' there is plenty of greed amongst animals as well, I feel it is actually lucky that humanity is the dominant species, because we have the sense of morality to take care of the weaker species and protect them from extinction while other animals would likely mindlessly over-hunt until they ran out of food and restarted the cycle.
@novacorponline unlikely any animal intellgent enough to be a threat to the world would most likely be a group animal and therefore have evolved empathy. I see nothing special about primates as opposed to say canids that means that if they evolve super-intellegence they somehow are superior. Hyper intellegent dogs would likely be equally empathetic (thats dog as in canids not the human made species canis familiaris )
@novacorponline If human beings are not a mistake, perhaps the way we act is. We are destroying the planet slowly but surely, sure i might not mourn the death of bugs, but for example, mosqitoes can live for mere minutes. Instead of dogs that we sent into space for no real reason, or monkeys we test products on.
@novacorponline we mourn over a pet wether it is a spider or a dog i dont care if a random dog dies. we mourn for dead pets not because they are cute.
@novacorponline Just to put my own 2 cents in, I don't judge an animal or insect on its' "adorable factor." Usually, It's just personality. I could NEVER hurt a small animal. They all have personalities and the such, while a mindless insect is just that. A mindless insect that lives completely off of instinct. I have no problem with dismissing roaches / spiders whatever, because the way I see it, they're no use in my house. If they all had personalities and were unique, I wouldn't kill them.
@novacorponline I think the point trying to be made is that with Humanity's gift of incredible intelligence, more than any other animal, we tend to lack empathy in certain situations when the increase of knowledge is at stake, it's a common reoccuring theme in human history.
@robokill387 not entirely true wolves and dogs have been shown to risk their lives to save each other care for their injured ect as have apes almost all group animals have evolved empathy and some form of morality for example piranha almost never attack each other even in feeding frenzies.
Personally, I don't think of us as inferior, but try reversing that and tell me how any of that makes us superior? Would we accept an alien species as being superior to us because of those things?
I hate when people are like "Why are you crying? If we hadn't sent the dog into space we wouldn't know about as much about the universe. it was for the good of humanity." Well ya know what? We don't know ANYTHING. We've barely scratched the surface of space travel, so keep your arrogant comments to yourself. This dog didn't deserve to die.
i dont want to be depressed when ever i think about this so we should all just hope some aliens found laika and made him/her there god and made them immortal. :)
Animal testing for medicine isn't bad. Let's say it takes thousands of animal deaths to find a cure for a serious disease like cancer. Well, those thousands of deaths would have saved billions of human lives. It's retarded stuff like testing for perfume or space that pisses me off. There's nothing to gain from exploring space. We'll never find another species. We'll never colonize another planet. We'll never gain resources. So why throw away lives for something so stupid?
@metromatician As Hank Green put much better than I'm about to, if we only do things that will directly benefit society, then we will accomplish almost nothing and won't really learn much more about our world. In addition, I feel like that's a pretty pessimistic position to take on space exploration. I mean, we can never know for sure what's out there until we start looking. The main thing we have to gain is knowledge, to better understand what our universe is and what part we play in it.
@metromatician Resources actually might be feasible, but most likely the farthest we'll ever go is that one planet near AC, which would be like a twenty year round trip.
@TheDemonKing100 all animals in animal testing are intended to die, that's the cold truth, if they survive a test they just use it for another one and so on until they die, we humans are that cruel
@TheDemonKing100 i read something that said the main scientist got attached and didnt want to send her to space at the end but they still did :( R.I.P laika
@TheDemonKing100 But all animals in animal testing laboratories are intended to die! Seriously, they don't release them after they're done torturing them! They use them until they're not useful anymore and then they kill them if the testing doesn't kill them in the process. Research it!
@afroluffyhashair with the way humans treat one another I don't think it's that far off... but the Russians DID fire people off into space. And they died. One woman was drugged. You hear her ask whats going on in the capsule, how hot it's getting.... and then...static. Incinerated. So yeah, humans first I suppose.
@PIEMASTER1320 So would you also approve of randomly selected culling? Because human testing exists. It's just that for some reason people don't want to volunteer for lethal experiments.
Laika wasn't the first in space. Other animals went before her and came back. She was the first in orbit which is the reason she was not able to come back. We didn't have the technology to bring something back from orbit.
@Isaac93113 no one likes a 10 year old kid who plays minecrapt and says LOL THUMBS UP SO I CAN GET ATTENTION BECAUSE I DON'T GET ANY CUZ I'M PLAYING MINECRAPT
@Isaac93113 you like it because you're 2 years old and it's like a stupid lego video game. I'm offended that anyone would even think of taking art like this and making a faggot minecraft video out of it.
Goddamn Testing people do.... For makeup and all this bullshit. Its not needed and all this testing causes is More deaths of all these species. People dont realise we are animals too.R.I.P laika and many others that have been killed in useless Testing.
@TherealJSB23 None of animal testing is right at all. they arent treated right and they die in pain. The testing is not necesarry whatsoever because all its fucking being used for is stuff we dont need like a new perfume or makeup or spice or some bullshit. If it was being tested on people then Nobody would ever have to die because it might harm us just a bit yet since our bodies are able to take more than other species we would just be healed in a hospital. humans or any other species really

What's done, is done. Laika was just one historical animal who died on the hands of Natures biggest mistake. Instead of complaining about it, we should be out there, helping animals who can be saved.
happyhunterfish 5 months ago
@happyhunterfish I hate when people consider humans to somehow be inferior to every other animal in existence. What makes us so inferior? Are we inferior because we have a higher morality system than 'be nice to stronger one'? Is it because we have the ability to rationalize and think logically? Human beings are not a mistake. The only mistake here is you judging the worth of a creature soley by it's adorable factor because i know you don't mourn the deaths of spiders and roaches.
novacorponline 5 months ago 36
@novacorponline
Very well said.
snovatf2 4 months ago
@novacorponline That's a foul assumption, friend. Many people, including myself, always mourn an unjustified death - no matter which creature it is that is killed. And humans judge eachother by the system of 'be nice to the one who will give me the most personal gain' so, in reality, are we really that different?
This is a good song
TheSevenCamels 4 months ago
@TheSevenCamels I never said the song wasn't good; just that the opinion that humans are arbitrarily inferior to every more adorable creature is wrong. Most of the 'wrongs' humans do, you can find in the animal kingdom as well. But lets not just focus on only the bad parts; the human race is also the only species on earth that actively works hard to help and protect other species to stop their extinction. The human race is not nearly as pure evil as many environmentalists would have you believe.
novacorponline 4 months ago
@novacorponline Oh, I see. I (Very wrongly, I now see) believed you were implying that humanity lacked flaws.
TheSevenCamels 4 months ago
@novacorponline I hate how people protect animals that you feel like you could hug or pet and not protect animals that look ugly, but are a valuable part of our ecosystem. Like spiders, sharks, and that gross prehistoric giant-salamander thing in New York that was being killed by toxins in the mud it lived in, you know which one I'm talking about.
Popcultureguy3000 4 months ago
@novacorponline We aren't inferior, not in the least bit, and because we are such an evolved race, we should look after animals weaker than us. Dogs and Cats depend on us daily, and it is when you decide to break those bonds of trust that you become an inferior race.
takura13 4 months ago
@novacorponline Do you mean superior? Inferior means underneath.
paigerr4971 4 months ago
@paigerr4971 sorry i was being sarcastic; the person I was replying to called humanity 'natures greatest mistake' and personally i feel that we are exactly the opposite of that.
novacorponline 4 months ago
@novacorponline I actually do feel sad when spiders and roaches die. I make sure to leave spiders alone and take roaches outside without harming them.
Why can't people just care for all living things, from dogs to spiders to other humans?
Mingaggins 4 months ago
@Mingaggins Because there is such a thing called the food chain --- a thing we spent millions of years to climb on top of. Unnecessary killing should be avoided, but survival (as in eating) and advancing science and technology for the survival of future generations (as in lab animals) are absolute necessary sacrifices. And to @TheDemonKing100, please don't throw this Nazi crap around. Other animals don't kill their own kind and so shouldn't we. It is a completely different thing.
pigberto 3 months ago
@pigberto Eating meat is "unnecessary killing" and can be easily avoided. At this point in human history, we have absolutely no need to continue eating meat, especially not with the brutal and cruel factory farming system.

@kilvasify humans are one of the only animals to even care about each other and other species. for all our problems, at least we try. at least we have the capacity to care.
robokill387 3 months ago in playlist Favorite videos
@kilvasify Yes. Because animals never kill eachother, kill other animals (especially not for fun, that would be insane. Dogs chase rabbits because they want to give them hugs), animals never misbehave, and animals always do what's right for the invironment.
Araclain 3 months ago in playlist YouTube Mix for Jonathan Coulton
@Araclain ....almost right....i'm pretty sure that if we wouldn't exist this world would be a better place...because we feel like we are the pinnacle of creation...and that made us a bit to cocky....
kilvasify 3 months ago
@kilvasify So, our species is horrible because some people do bad things, despite the good things others do, and the number of people who are just neutral or unable to affect anything in the larger scale? Taking that philosophy, dogs are just as horrible because a few of them are vicious to even people who try to be nice to them. You cannot hold people to a higher standard than animals, yet consider them worse.
novacorponline 3 months ago
@novacorponline I already told you....this world would be better without us...that's all...we created greed, hate and perversion....when we're supposed to be smarter...some people would kill or destroy for "money"...the money that WE created to create balance...I dunno if we're worse...we're simply ridiculous I guess
kilvasify 3 months ago
@kilvasify no. The world would just 'be' without us. You should check how hunting animals behave, specifically revolving around the 'alphas' there is plenty of greed amongst animals as well, I feel it is actually lucky that humanity is the dominant species, because we have the sense of morality to take care of the weaker species and protect them from extinction while other animals would likely mindlessly over-hunt until they ran out of food and restarted the cycle.
novacorponline 3 months ago
@novacorponline unlikely any animal intellgent enough to be a threat to the world would most likely be a group animal and therefore have evolved empathy. I see nothing special about primates as opposed to say canids that means that if they evolve super-intellegence they somehow are superior. Hyper intellegent dogs would likely be equally empathetic (thats dog as in canids not the human made species canis familiaris )
lonewolfM16 2 months ago
@novacorponline If human beings are not a mistake, perhaps the way we act is. We are destroying the planet slowly but surely, sure i might not mourn the death of bugs, but for example, mosqitoes can live for mere minutes. Instead of dogs that we sent into space for no real reason, or monkeys we test products on.
happyhunterfish 3 months ago
@novacorponline we mourn over a pet wether it is a spider or a dog i dont care if a random dog dies. we mourn for dead pets not because they are cute.

ProEmoGurl 2 months ago
@ProEmoGurl I think you completely missed the point.
Jaquan1254 2 months ago
@novacorponline Just to put my own 2 cents in, I don't judge an animal or insect on its' "adorable factor." Usually, It's just personality. I could NEVER hurt a small animal. They all have personalities and the such, while a mindless insect is just that. A mindless insect that lives completely off of instinct. I have no problem with dismissing roaches / spiders whatever, because the way I see it, they're no use in my house. If they all had personalities and were unique, I wouldn't kill them.

@novacorponline I think the point trying to be made is that with Humanity's gift of incredible intelligence, more than any other animal, we tend to lack empathy in certain situations when the increase of knowledge is at stake, it's a common reoccuring theme in human history.
koyoteblue1998 2 months ago
@koyoteblue1998 as opposed to other animals which have no empathy whatsoever and care only about their own survivial.
robokill387 2 months ago in playlist Favorite videos
@robokill387 not entirely true wolves and dogs have been shown to risk their lives to save each other care for their injured ect as have apes almost all group animals have evolved empathy and some form of morality for example piranha almost never attack each other even in feeding frenzies.
lonewolfM16 2 months ago
@novacorponline
Personally, I don't think of us as inferior, but try reversing that and tell me how any of that makes us superior? Would we accept an alien species as being superior to us because of those things?
Thorakites 1 month ago
I hate when people are like "Why are you crying? If we hadn't sent the dog into space we wouldn't know about as much about the universe. it was for the good of humanity." Well ya know what? Animal testing for medicine isn't bad. Let's say it takes thousands of animal deaths to find a cure for a serious disease like cancer. Well, those thousands of deaths would have saved billions of human lives. It's retarded stuff like testing for perfume or space that pisses me off. There's nothing to gain from exploring space. We'll never find another species. We'll never colonize another planet. We'll never gain resources. So why throw away lives for something so stupid?
metromatician 6 months ago
@metromatician As Hank Green put much better than I'm about to, if we only do things that will directly benefit society, then we will accomplish almost nothing and won't really learn much more about our world. In addition, I feel like that's a pretty pessimistic position to take on space exploration. I mean, we can never know for sure what's out there until we start looking. The main thing we have to gain is knowledge, to better understand what our universe is and what part we play in it.
darthmustache1 6 months ago in playlist YouTube Mix for Jonathan Coulton
@metromatician Resources actually might be feasible, but most likely the farthest we'll ever go is that one planet near AC, which would be like a twenty year round trip.
TheInsaneWombat 6 months ago
@metromatician Um, well, that's an idiotic viewpoint. Yes the video is sad, but if you think we'll never colonize elsewhere... really? Come on now.

lodawg333 5 months ago
@TheDemonKing100 But all animals in animal testing laboratories are intended to die! Seriously, they don't release them after they're done torturing them! They use them until they're not useful anymore and then they kill them if the testing doesn't kill them in the process. Research it!
HerbieStardust 5 months ago 2
@TheDemonKing100 You're right, it would have been better to just have started with humans, cuz what is a human's life compared to that of a dog's?
afroluffyhashair 5 months ago in playlist YouTube Mix for Jonathan Coulton
@afroluffyhashair with the way humans treat one another I don't think it's that far off... but the Russians DID fire people off into space. And they died. One woman was drugged. You hear her ask whats going on in the capsule, how hot it's getting.... and then...static. Incinerated. So yeah, humans first I suppose.

Most animal testing is 100% necessary, unless you'd rather have them test new and potentially dangerous things on humans...
TherealJSB23 7 months ago in playlist Jonathan Coulton 2
@TherealJSB23 None of animal testing is right at all. they arent treated right and they die in pain. The testing is not necesarry whatsoever because all its fucking being used for is stuff we dont need like a new perfume or makeup or spice or some bullshit. If it was being tested on people then Nobody would ever have to die because it might harm us just a bit yet since our bodies are able to take more than other species we would just be healed in a hospital. humans or any other species really
resserection1 7 months ago
@resserection1 the pain is always bad. The testing should just stop period.
