I want to live in a yurt for a while. Flipping electricty, orange street lights, being surrounded in an ugly house surrounded by ugly neighbours. Id rather live in a yurt in a field
yurts seem cool. but when i go camping we cant even have food in the tents because of bears. i wonder if this rule applies for yurts too when living in a heavily populated black bear area, the pacific north west?
What about in Alaska and Griz Bears? Yep. Got to keep things clean in bear Country. We had a Kodiak rip out a side wall ( while we were gone ) no food... just looking for the right bed I guess. We solved the issue by raising the Yurt on a platform 12' above ground level with a stair case entrance from under the platform. Also cleared out a bit more brush. Bears do not like exposure. I'm still a great fan of yurts. I lived in the PNW for many years... go for it.....
We do not have a bath room in the yurt. We had a amping trailer we used for the bath and kitchen. Warm in the winter i you keep a fire going. During the day it's warm on it's own if exposed to the sun. We heat with a wood stove. Used about 4 cords last year. Cheers..... L.
Yes. Growing. People looking for alternatives. Really look at the Yurts. Stitching, Treatments, Warranty, How long the Co's in business. Try to see them in place, look at different types or mfgrs. If your going to use it to live in full time it has to be built to last and easy to repair if need be. Pacific Yurts is still tops on my list. I've lived in several different ones from Alaska, Colorado and here in NM. Where are you? Your welcome to come visit or place:-) Stay warm
I live in Massachusetts but I plan to buy a small rural piece of land in Vermont. The weather is predictably cold, wet and windy so having a nice, warm shelter is a premium. The only problem is that I may have to leave the Yurt unattended for up to a week at a time and this may leave open the opportunity for freezing or theft. Yurts are my 1st choice. I'm also considering Peter King's Tiny House (look for it on Youtube). Thanks for the offer.
Coyotes and Bears: You can build on an elevated platform. say 10" or better. We did this in AK for snow. It worked out well because we had another whole room/basement below the yurt. Two Story! Also cleared a space about 300' around the property to increase visibility. Animals don't generally like being in the open. Keep your home and land clean and you should have no problems..
this video is two years old and I'm curious as to how you keep warm ...how living in a Yurt is more simple/sustainable than regular/other housing ...I've only recently found yurt housing : ) thank you for any info that you pass on : )
Sustainable I guess on how you use it. Cost, Ease of construction, Less Materials than our house. Portable in case of.... Warmth is no problem with a good wood stove it's like living in a hot air ballon. All in all the cost of living is not much. Our electrical is all low voltage except for a couple of 110 outlets for the computer:-) Our costs were about 25.00 month for electrical. We'd like to go solar soon.... LIVE WELL..... Love harder!!
What kind of composting toilet do you use? :p I'm torn between Pacific and Yurtco really - Yurtco is Canadian but I don't see a lot of difference between them.
We use a regular toilet... in the house. I've used composting toilets in Alaska in my cabin and house. Worked great. Pacific Yurts . all I can say is when a Kodiak Bear ripped out our wall PY sent us the parts FAST. And we lived REMOTE. Way Remote... Miss Alaska, Bears and Yurts....

I love Yurts!
Some questions, if you don't mind.
1. Would everything freeze if the wood stove is not constantly stoked? How many cords per winter?
2. Any issues with molds?
3. Coyotes or Bears trying to enter?
4. Where did you buy your Yurt?
5. Any other recommendations for cold climate?
Thanks :)

!. Got to keep i warm. Stuff can freeze if left in the cold. It's great when warm. Like living in a hot air ballon.
No mold issues. Out cover inside. The colored ones. Proving a insulating layer.
No Coyote or Bear Issues. thought we did have some Bear issues in Alaska.
Bought our yurt from a company that went out of business. Yurts of America. Go with Pacific Yurts.
No other cold weather hints. We use about four cords of wood between the house and Yurt. Best of luck. Enjoy and Thanks
