Looking back at this game, and knowing more about it. I was surprised that due to some difference between the Snes and the Super Famicon(Jap) much of the real translation was lost during the Ted Woosley era of translation. (The dude only spent 30 days translating this from Japanese to English, as well as Final Fantasy 3(US). They wanted to launch it for the Holidays.) I love the game still, but I can't help but wonder what all was lost in the translation. Damn you to hell Woosley.
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as Secret Of Mana. It’s up on my channel ORTmusic to check out and download!
This was the game we specifically bought a multi-tap for the snes for, in order for all three of us brothers to play, unusually for a rpg it was a three player game, great memories!
Can't we just use an emulator and play it via Internet, SOMEHOW? I would LOVE to play it again, together with some dudes who love it too :D Im 23, i guess its never too late to debauch in memories ^^
There is really no experience for a gamer that is like playing a legendary game for the first time. This is one of those games, big time. I remember a friend of mine recommended the game to me and he said "when you're playing it you'll be like 'woah, I'm playing Secret of Mana!'" He was right, within a few hours of playing the game that's exactly what I was thinking.
What a great, original game. An RPG with real-time battles and multiplayer, so far ahead of its time.
Does anyone know the name of the song that plays when the Mana Fortress first takes flight? There is a lot of lightning and thunder, and it rapidly changes position as you try to approach it with Flamie. The music was very fast paced, kind of electronica
This, Mario RPG, Final Fantasy II/IV, and Zelda: A Link to the Past.. I got an NES when I was 2 in 1987. Super Nintendo came out, I got one for X-Mas in 1992 when I was almost 8. I was officially blown away. These games took up my entire childhood and I wouldn't trade it in for ANYTHING! I still can't believe I beat this game when I was so young. I even had the Spear and the whip's extra orb!
@ovinophile Um, that was true until I graduated High School in 2003. Honestly, they were still a GREAT company until the merge. Think about it... what was the LAST good Final Fantasy? IX right? (Some people say X, but I was disappointed with it) Square-Enix happens, then they start buying every big franchise they can get their greedy hands on. Tomb Raider/Eidos, Taito, UIEvolution, Inc, they tried for Tecmo... it's just sickening. That's why Sakaguchi left his position as V.P., it was corrupt.
I had no idea what i was getting into when i first played this, but i vividly remember how i felt when i looked at it and studied the cover art. I since have bought a mint copy via ebay and have it to this day! Love it.
@clASicOner hell yeah. I still have my poster from Nintendo Power back in the day with the cover on it, and the text that talks about the sword and at the bottom it says "Uncover the....
If you think this game is great, you should try the sequel. I can't speak to the story because I played both in Japanese (working on learning the language), but the gameplay is leaps and bounds better in 聖剣伝説3 than in Secret of Mana (and I love both). I'd even say the music is a notch better, which is no small feat for sure.
yea i remember almost trading for this game by accident. I traded like another SNES game and paid additional 25 dollars i think to get this game...and because of its beautiful cover art and nice screenshots. I can't believe how lucky i m to have found this game. I love the real time fighting system and the story is amazing.
Me, being only 14, really wish i could travel in time to even feast my eyes on this masterpiece, I grew up with Ocarina of Time, I wish I had Secret a Mana there too...
They don't make games as epic as this anymore. I mean God of War and others are really good but compared to games like Chrono Trigger, FFVI, FFVII, and Metal Gear Solid 1 they don't even compare. It just gets lazier as the years go on. I mean MGS3 was pretty fuckin awesome too. The originallity just doesn't exist anymore, not in movies, video games, TV, nothin. Every once in a while you will find a diamond in the roth.
Best fucken game for SNES imo. Freakin amazing music and enjoyable gameplay, sigh I wish they made another one just as epic as this particular one in the series.
@kurahosan I got Secret of Mana, And Chrono Trigger on the same very day. I played them both, loved them. I focused on Chrono Trigger, then alternated between playing Secret of Mana, and Chrono Trigger. I didn't know that there was sequels, so after I beat the games I was a bit sad for the fact that I couldn't go further into the storyline, and that it was the end. Much later, I found out about both the sequels. I felt disappointed when I saw Chrono Cross, Too bad I can't get SOM3...
This Game Is the Best Game Ever Invented For its Time, and still to this day, AND YES it shits over chrono trigger. so many memories,. the music was amazing, finished this game in like 10 days when i first got it, i was so addicted, i think i was about 10 or 11
this song gave me nostalgic feelings even when i was too little to have anything to remember. its a weird feeling i get whenever i hear this. sometimes i turn on the game just to watch the title sequence and hear this song.
wow beautiful. powerful. emotional. and triumphant all at the same time. god this game is the best. i dont think any game will ever come close too this one let alone be beter then it. best game ever? by far.
This is truly an amazing game and i still have it and my good old Super Nintendo :D i wish it would come out on DS or something so i can play it eveywhere !

i remember getting this game when it first came out for the snes(american import) i payed over the odds for it, but what a brilliant game ,for any body who has never played secret of mana play it and see how a brilliant rpg game is, compared with todays rpgs:)
omg this game is soo crazy! the first time i heard this theme i was absolutely stunned. and then i didn't know what to expect for the rest of the music but every single piece i've heard in SoM is a masterpiece! this game has my favorite ost of all time
Definitely. SoM was definitely one of those games that was defined by it's music. Totally epic in every way. Some of the themes really get you going, and some of them just stir you deeply. What a great game.
I played this game with a friend way back when... Now I am 25 (yeah not retired, but still) and I can't think of a period in my life i've been more happy. My buddy and me playing this game after school and in the weekends will probably remain my #1 childhood memory til' I die. It's just awsome and if you had the good luck too play it with a great friend the experience is unforgettable!
I had the good luck to play the game with two of my closest friends, and all of us can agree with your statement. We went back to play the game in its entirety again, and we each shed a tear of nostalgia when we turned on the game and heard this music.
im 26 and its the same story here.. mana made my friendship rock solid! everyday out trying to get more weapons orbs on the manafortress damn we played till lvl 99 and still did'nt stop. to bad the new mana games suck so much ass.
yeah, there will NEVER be another game like this one, it's really one of a cind, and the best one EVER! Totaly love this game, best childhood memories.
I had this discussion with a friend a couple of days ago, on how the golden age of gaming was clearly the SNES years. And also, on how these days big companies like EA and Ubisoft just buy all the other companies, trying to get monopoly and ruin the whole gaming industry by milking out franchise, making crappy games, etc.
They used to make games to make GOOD unique games.. now they do it ONLY to make money.
Never will be a game as epic as Secret of Mana, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, etc.
@grinchenen I have almost the same story. I'm 25 now and when I was visiting in Connecticut my best friend and I would play this together. Only I'd do the adventuring and she would be in charge of the lucre/GP (shopping). Every time when I was a little kid I would play this when I got the chance. The memory still lives on in me too. :D
@grinchenen I know what you mean! I played this with my brother when i was in primary school (24 now) The music gives me goose bumps as I remember night after night of me falling asleep to this song while i left my nintendo on...
@grinchenen same here, played it with my brother when I was younger (I'm now 20-something too), it was the most happy period of my life... 2 players co-op until the end of the game ftw ;)
I made the same experiances like you. One of my best memories from my childhood. Too bad this Friend I played hours has become rude. He was a good Gamer. I'm now 34.
@grinchenen I had, and i have to admit, the music could always make me cry xDD It's funny, how the gaming industries always try to make better grapics and more realistic games, but the real treasures are about to get lost in the nintendo era. Look at the graphics of Secret of Mana, theres nothing revolutionary about it, but this game got charme and most of all, FEELING. And thats the reason i will always love it ^^
@grinchenen Same here man, and right now we are listening to this with the same friend I played it with back then. He is leaving tomorrow for the netherlands maybe permanently and we are remembering old times. We are still good friends after 20 years
Still have this game for my SNES. One of the best games ever made in history. We should get them to port it onto the Nintendo Wii on the shopping channel, so then a new generation will be able to see the great RPGs we had to grow up on.
Um, actually 88Odin88...They added it onto the virtual console last Monday. Right now, I've got the hero on Lv 20 and the two other party members on Lv 17. The point being the fact that you can now play it on your Wii just as I am right now.
Yes! This is wicked.. I wish they only would have added the other content they cut out of this game. They were supposed to make it for the SNES CD-Rom Expansion but they never did. They had to port it onto the Cartridge because their whole CD-Rom expansion never went through..
Such a sucker for good RPG's. It helped that the gameplay was truely fantastic too. I've always felt like this was Zelda times three, in every, every aspect.
I'm 33, and still *love* this game, especially it's music. I played it when it first came out on the Snes. Thankfully there's emulators like Snes9x to play this masterpiece again. Won the Soundtrack CD via an old EGM/Square USA Art Contest.
It's one of the best music soundtracks composed IMO. The spiritual, mystical overtones in the visuals and backstory was very inspirational to me.
This song still brings a wave of memories over me, memories of me and my best friend working together on this game (I was the adventurer and she took care of shopping).
my dad still has his super nintendo and i play this game all the time! the music is so beautiful and it kinda reminds me of the kingdom hearts series being that it's made by square soft - AKA square enix -
Thanks for posting all of these songs from this masterpiece of a game. I have this game still to this day and I'm 25. Memories seem to fade but it's the music that brings it all back! I agree with everyone's comments!
Damn.. This song/music gives me really good memorys of the old days.. And that this is a game with the one of the best game play and even the best music ever made to a game.. That once one of the things that did make this game that good.

Yep. My comment maybe was confuse, I LOVE SoM a lot. I played it 3 times when I had like 10 years old and it's amazing.
But in my opinion Chrono Trigger is better (for me) in a lot of things, but real time action is better than turn-based action.
So how you said, both are amazing.

They had to port it onto the Cartridge because their whole CD-Rom expansion never went through..

i can't describe in words how much i love this game and the memories i have of it.
i am incredibly happy that a "simple" game like that can wake such enormous emotions in me.

Crap yeah, spine tingling again when I hear it :s

I myself am a girl. But I'm still more the adventuring kick-butt type of warrior in RPGs. She was much more conservative when it came to shopping.

my dad still has his super nintendo and i play this game all the time! the music is so beautiful and it kinda reminds me of the kingdom hearts series being that it's made by square soft - AKA square enix -

I love this song because when I hear it, I feel as if I'm seeing a vast and wild, pristine world before me, and I am awed at such a feeling.
