You can do anything from having a wildly viewable public account to basically having it on complete lockdown, only allowing people you want to see almost anything. If you want to be ultra safe, just put your all your settings to "friends only" and set people who are able to find you in "search" to "friends only". You can keep almost anyone from finding you unless they go to huge lengths, then just deny them if you want.
