  • 7:54 why is the camera flash wearing fur?

  • @TheZaydeStation Do you mean why is there something furry on top of the camera that's filming? That's a wind muffler for a microphone.

  • @TheZaydeStation microphone fuzzy?

  • what's the link for part II ?

  • @SmileySherief It's right below the video above...

  • Where abouts is the video filmed? Some lovely scenery!

  • @GeorgeMaier That's Queenstown, New Zealand!

  • What camera Did you use to record this video ?

  • which camera is better for music videos ? I heard it was the canon but please let me know.

  • great video - what camera did you shoot the video with?

  • @spakuloid Thanks! It was mostly filmed with a Canon 5D, although the jetboat segments were filmed with the 600D and D5100.

  • It's fairly easy to choose cameras like these 2.

Want a good filming DSLR for short films and care maybe less for photography but want more options for video? Choose Canon

Prefer photo over filming with slightly better images but just like to shoot your standard home video on birthdays etc.? Go for the Nikon.

    They are good.

  • russian alphabet on a blackboard...

  • Let me make it simple for everyone:

d5100: better low light performance, auto focus

    t3i: better video mode,

sony whatever: more features, megapixels, fps, fewer lenses and resale value.

  • image comparisons in camera labs site & chromatic aberration for cannon, tilting me towards Nikon.

  • both prodce sharp results. differentiating image quality is like splitting hairs. it is incredibly close. Reviewers say canon's image quality is bad is because they did not tweak the settings. when both set to their best, they are almost the same. so it really goes down to the grip. i got my canon 600d as i prefer the control dial at the front. two of my friends have nikon d5100 and i know what i am saying.

  • Awesome review! I'm interesting the Canon EOS Rebel T3i it will be my first SLR Camera. Unfortunately, I wish it would take photos a bit faster. What would you recommend that is similar but faster?

  • @Dasadorah From Canon, that'd be the 60D. But if you're open to other brands, Sony has some very fast models in its SLT range.

  • @Dasadorah me too i recomend the 60d because sony alfa isnt good

  • I'm going to be getting my 1st camera soon and these are 2 that I had in mind. Tough choice. Any help with a definite choice?

  • @DavidRyanMiller I had too choose between these two cameras about 7 months ago so going by my personal experience the best thing to help you choose is to get to your local camera shop and hold both the cameras in your hands to see which one you like the best.

  • Excellent review though your English is very fast. I also viewed part 2..

For people who prefer 'body', go for Canon 600D, for those who prefer 'image' rather than body, go for Nikon D5100. Movie or video is not big issue, you can use camcorder. It can be said that 600D is for beginner but D5100 is for enthusiast. Missing things in Nikon are exist in Canon and vice versa, this may be an agreed policy between the two companies!

  • I've been searching for a solid review of these two cameras for a while now. Your review is by far the best.

  • Brilliant review, such a well done video. I sincerely appreciate the time investment made to deliver such a well informed review. Cheers!

  • @rockstarzusa You're welcome! DOn't forget to check out part 2 at the link below the video!

  • What are you shooting this review on?????

  • I just bought the Nikon D5100. Thanks for your review. It was very helpful in making my decision.

  • That is major, the Nikon D5100 Taking 30 Frames at 6 Frames/Second before theBuffer Fills. While the Cannon T3i Rebel did only 15Frames at near6 Frames/Second before the Buffer Fills.I certainly, just on this Specification would lean in favour of the NikonD5100.But in Video mode,it appears those Canon People managed to give"Manual Video Controls"where as the Nikon D5100 maintains more AUTO modes in Video.Photographers will like the NikonD5100 but Videographers will like the Canon on Video-Manual..

  • Anyone else notice the car dissaper at 7:25 ?

  • @Powisful they changed frames you can see the clips change

  • @Powisful I think it was Marty going back to the future...

  • hi, im based in auckland.... is camera labs based in new zealand? as i can see, your video was taken in queenstown... :)

  • @MRdiggs007 Yep, Cameralabs is based in Queenstown... see my latest video of our Queenstown photowalk!

  • This is my second year taking photography in my high schhol (now in advanced photography) I know how to develop my own film make prints etc.... I've been usind a 35mm slr and I've been looking at starting to use a dslr now I don't have the biggest budget. What do you think my best option would be ? A t3I or this nikon I'm not a bigenner or an expert either I would be using it for my photoclasses and hopefully in college maybe some video

  • OMG! where are you filming this review? it looks like God's Country! is this in New Zealand? Spectacular views!!!!

  • @MrRubbish2011 Yep, it's filmed in Queenstown, New Zealand.

  • @cameralabs So given a voucher which entitled you to either one of these cameras, which one would you choose?

  • does 600D have autofocus in video mode?

  • @kaiZEr2618 no it doesnt

  • From All the cameras, which one gives the best image with a good price?

  • i have the 600d now as my choice! and i love it!!!!

  • The van disappears because the video was cut at that spot and cross faded

  • Hey Gordon thank for these reviews as one guy stated ,why did that van at 7:25 dissapear out of no where ? Very weird

  • 7:23 a van disappeared

  • Which camera would be best for shooting sports? Like basketball, soccer etc. and also good with landscapes? I'm very desperate to know! Any replies would be appreciated. :)

  • @azngirl967 For fast action I'd get a Sony SLT or Nikon V1 / J1 instead. See my reviews at cameralabs . com!

  • All of the bells and whistles don't matter to me much, all that I am really concerned with is which cam. gives you the BEST IMAGE QUALITY! Any responses... anyone?

  • @100REALM Have a look at the results pages of my D5100 review at cameralabs . com - you'll see a direct comparison with the 600D / T3i there...

  • @cameralabs TQ my friend!

  • @100REALM Although I have never used a D5100, I can say from my own experience the T3i/600D has fantastic image quality (both still and video). The colors are vibrant and amazing and the if you know/like to you can manually control virtually every aspect of the camera. I would highly recommend it.

  • Thank you for your fantastic comparison. :D

I just bought a 600D and, while the buffer on the D5100 may in fact be larger, I have a SanDisk SDHC 32 gig class 10 UHS-1 and am able to shoot full-size jpegs nonstop, so I just thought I'd mention to anyone out there worried about continuous shooting, card speed does make a significant difference sometimes :P

  • @OnBurningPaperWings thanks for sharing! i was just wondering what memory card to buy for my 600d, i will go for the sandisk uhs-1 too then ;)

  • Thump Up For The Canon ...

  • Which one has longer battery life?

  • iam very confused and i need a help ,,, which is better and why ? please i need honest answer ..

  • @hofra01 Neither is better. It depends which specific features I've mentioned here are more important to you. If after watching both parts of the video you are still confused, then get either one!

  • Super review!!! All the technical differences mentioned were extremely clear and helpful. I think I'm going with 600D/T3i.

  • I have a canon T3I and every time i shoot video this little white bar comes on to the right of the screen then it stops and a pop up say video recording has been stopped automatically. Why does this happen? Does any one knwo why?

  • @NscaleAmtrak Sounds like the memory card is too slow to keep up. Make sure you use one rated at Class 6 or faster, and that you also format it with the camera.

  • i love your review, dont stop post video here.. i also learn some phothograph technique from your video

  • Hey guys, I have the Canon T3i and as stupid as it may seem, I cant figure out how to shoot video! In the video section it just takes normal pictures. Could someone please personally message me in regards to this post, I have many questions to ask. Thanks!

  • @chapmanvoris The best thing you can do is read the manual.

  • @chapmanvoris It's kind of weird, I figured it out fairly quickly though. When in movie mode, you press the button to flip between viewfinder and LCD to begin recording. Makes no sense, but I think there is a record button on it so that's how I knew.

  • your reviews are the best thing on youtube.

i have seen all of your videos and sometimes i just keep watching them again and again...

it is just because of your impressive and neutral reviews that i bought a Nikon D5100. and i am loving it! :)

and hey please ignore the haters... they'll always be haters.. please don't stop uploading . :-(

your website is a great help for all of us.

Thankyou Gordon Liang! you are the best!

  • @zainkam1 Thanks! I'm glad you find my vidoes and reviews useful! Don't forget I don't get paid for any of this though unless people actually buy things through the partner stores at cameralabs . com, so if you find my reviews useful and are ever shopping online for anything at all, please go to the support us page at cameralabs first to see if there's a store you're thinking of using! Cheers!

  • Brilliant review as always. You should post more video reviews. There are no other camera reviews on youtube with the depth and practicality of yours and lack of unnecessary bias

  • @sedwarg Thanks, I appreciate your kind words!

  • Hey folks. Which of the cameras do you prefer?

  • Does the focus depend on the lens? I'm so confused lol I want to get the t2i or t3i but it doesn't have auto focus which I need. And the Nikon d3100 and d5100 have it could I turn it off if nesessary and use manual? And if you couldn't tell, yes I'm not very well informed

  • Yes, by all means please keep posting them to YT as well - ignore the haters.

  • so you stop doing videos ? never heard from you for a while :)

  • @ladduro I did one on the GoPro HD Hero 2 only two weeks ago! PS - all my latest reviews are at cameralabs . com. I don't post to YT much these days as there's too many haters.

  • @cameralabs well, I feel you, it is just I like to keep my video feeds in one place rather than moving from web site to web site. Plus YT has a very very good cache system and loading is almost instant ;)

  • @cameralabs Let them hate man, I enjoy these videos. No reason to punish the masses just cause a few people complain. Up to you though

  • @cameralabs start posting them on youtube again :) You have way more people liking then hating :)

  • @cameralabs Please post more reviews here on YT! :( dont mind those haters , you are the best person who reviews cameras in the world. :)) like if you want gordon to post videos here ..

  • @cameralabs WHAT! Haters?! Are you serious? Explain that please.

    Sincerely

    David

  • @MrRapala91 The steady stream of insults that I have to remove and block from the videos!

  • Wow love the cinematic transitions and as always great reviews :)

  • what is your main camera and lens?

  • @bsalightning08 I use whatever camera I am testing for Cameralabs

  • @cameralabs Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D vs Nikon D5100 review comparison part 2 what about the part 2. I coulndn't find part 2 or 3. can you help me?

  • @SuperSerefsizPKK click the link under the video - it'll take you direct to my site were you can watch part 2.

  • @cameralabs There is something wrong at your page ?

You have 2 links to buy those cameras. The Nikon link is ok.

The Canon offers links to buy the T3i and when you go to those links you see great cheaper prices...because they are selling you the T3 instead of T3i.

    The T3 is a much inferior camera ( that's why is cheaper...scam?).

I love your videos...keep it clean my friend.

  • @globalarte Thanks, that was a fault at my end. I've corrected it now. The prices you'll now see for the T3i / 600D are indeed for that camera. Thanks for your support!

  • @cameralabs Thank you .

I knew i was going to buy the T3i your review reinforce my decision.

but i really like the incorporated intervalometer feature on the Nikon.

  • For the storage speed did you compare both cameras having the same type of SDHC card? I found Sandisk is bludyy slow while Fujifilm SDHC cards are faster.

  • @MDCCCLXXIV Yes, I used the same type of memory card on both cameras.

  • I also brought 600d

  • Summary:

Canon 600D=Great photos, great videos, better ergonomics and lots of pro features (grids, wireless flash, easy menu, iso button, manual settings in vid, all Canon lens works and more)

Nikon D5100=Great photos, decent videos, average ergonomics and average features (no grids, no wireless flash, slow menu, no iso button, no manual settings in vid, NOT ALL NIKON LENS WORK ...)

    Take your pick.

  • @daas8214 thanks for the overview :)

  • hey Gordon what camera is better Sony slt a65 or canon eos 600d? pls reply. nice video:)

  • I really like your videos! Always good quality, technical and helpful. Thx!

  • what camera did u use to film this?? :) Its amazing.

  • @154graciela I think I mentioned it at the end, but it was a Canon 5D2 with a 50mm f1.2 lens...

  • I bought CANON 600D, my first camera, Thanks for review!

  • take the same quality, if not better quality video than the D5100.

  • dear camera labs guy, i need an unbiased opinion. i have researched both very much and arent leaning towards one over the other. what do you think is better/recommend. please.

  • MORE VIDEOS. Please :D.

  • The D5100 has better picture & video quality. End of test =)

  • @DuralastTurbo Canon has better video.

  • @TechGeek95 Proof the Nikon D5100 is superior 2 N E thing from Canon ~:-)

Good luck with your trolling. U do not believe N E thing U R saying. The intelligent response is 2 sell your Canon krap & get a Nikon D5100, clown =D

  • @DuralastTurbo I am not trolling. Ask any videographer and they will tell you. And you can see some T3i videos here...

    /watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=HD_LaBwpeIE

    /watch?v=vqVpgTCFdeA&feature=channel_video_title

  • @TechGeek95 U R doing 'bandwagon' fallacy. Sure, ask N E crackhead & they will say drugs R wonderful =)) They will even beg 4 more, & lie, cheat, steal, & murder 2 buy even more! =D U don't actually believe N E thing U R saying. U R just another fanboy troll clown tax slave brand cow self-raping retard who cheers 4 being bent over & then some 4 products literally 100X the cost that have the same or worse performance than a Nikion D5100. If U had a brain U'd sell your krap & get the Nikon.

  • @DuralastTurbo Your analogy to druggies makes no sense. A videographer is not the same thing as a drug addict. True you can get similar quality video with both cameras but the Canon is superior because it has more control during video. The only thing Nikon has are some video effects built into the camera. Next time you go to a sporting event look at what the pros are using. Most of them use Canon and Sony.

  • @TechGeek95 U can type all the garbage U like - write a dozen novels if U like extolling the non-existent benefits of buying something other than the Nikon D5100. How unfortunate 4 U that U R so retarded & self-raping that U would waste your life contradicting the obvious, verifiable fact that the Nikon D5100 has better video quality than N E DSLR or camcorder, including N E thing from RED, & is equivalent 2 an Arri Alexa. I've already posted linx 2 vidz that proove it. U have eyes, fool.

  • @TechGeek95 Let me guess, U also own some Gib$on brand guitars, because the name is so important 2 U U would rather pay 10X more on 1 of those hunks of mahogany than 1 that loox, plays, & is built better than a Gib$on, & sounds about the same (so long as has alnico pickups), etc.

Oh yes - so 'stupid' 2 save $ & get the same (or better) performance. Shame on me 4 acknowledging the fact the Nikon D5100 is an amazing fluke in a good way, with vid as good as a $90k Alexa =)

  • @TechGeek95 U know what's even funnier is U probably believe a lot of your own bull$hit. I worked in high end audio a while & 4 instance Wilson Audio buys Crown EQs off Fleabay, removes some knobs, & slaps on their logo & jacks the price 20X. It's all a big joke - hahaha - rob the customer - trick them into buying overpriced krap with the same guts they can get 4 infinitely less $. Well I left precisely because I'm not into that game =) I make speakers that R awesome & cheap, simultaneously.

  • @DuralastTurbo YOU know what's funny? Half of what you are saying is trying to insult me and not proving that the D5100 is 'better' than any Canon ever made. And no, I don't own any guitar. I don't know how to play the guitar, I play the violin. No, the Canon is not a Nikon with a Canon logo and a jacked up price if that's what you are trying to say with the speaker comparison. No, the D5100 is not better at video than the Canon. Yes I saw your 2 links and they are very good but the Canon can...

  • @TechGeek95 I posted some linx 2 video samples that prove the Nikon D5100 has equivalent video quality 2 the Arri Alexa ($90,000 cam) & is superior 2 N E thing from RED ($40,000). Troll me all U like, but attacking me will not make those videos N E worse. They have very realistic look 2 them, equivalent 2 Arri Alexa, & better than N E thing from RED, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. If U want 2 stop TROLLING & actually provide PROOF that those others R better, post vid sample linx that prove it.

  • @DuralastTurbo You are trolling just as much as I am. And saying that Canon is better at video than the D5100 isn't attacking YOU. I don't really care how the D5100 is compared to the RED or Arri Alexa.

    Canon 60D: /watch?v=HrsUwINPN-g&feature=related

    Canon T3i: /watch?v=KAi2QIq1SUs

    Canon T3i: /watch?v=GvLG6XFogEs&feature=related

    Is that enough for you?

  • @TechGeek95 in order: #1 = Oversaturated, with poor shadow detail, & fuk'd up yellows (typical Canon), #2 also has washed out whites (ROFL!! Lower the exposure, clowns), #3 back-asswards gamma way 2 dark darks, way 2 green & fake (lame), #4 so ridiculously green it's like an old post card. Come on - find me something BETTER than the Nikon D5100 dood!! #5 better than the others, but still fake-ish color (like it's over-sharpened & 'posterized'), #6 = dark fuzzy krap (come on - don't B silly).

  • @TechGeek95 BTW: If this is the best Canon footage U can find, U would B wise 2 sell your Canon gear 2 some fool on Fleabay who thinx it's valuable, & go get yourself a Nikon D5100 =) I have never owned a Nikon. I just notice it has the best quality = equivalent 2 Arri Alexa, so it's such a no-brainer. 4 N E thing else may as well use my Sanyo Xacti. It has GR8 color accuracy (if use white card 'one push' balance), but the gamma is a mess. I will figure out how 2 edit the stuff sometime =D

  • @TechGeek95 BTW: I think U R missunderstanding the meaning of 'best' when concerning a transducer, like a camera. Best = most accurate = most REALISTIC! Sure a cam might have 'eye-popping' color or 'hyper-contrast' or 'super-sharpness' whatever. But does it look the most like REALITY?! U can always fiddle with things L8R 2 make them LESS natural. That is very easy. However, fixing fuk'd up color & messed up gamma footage 2 look REAL is extremely DIFFICULT. Get a Nikon D5100 & no need 2 fix!

  • @TechGeek95 HEY HEY! I did some research & found out the Nikon D5100 uses the Sony IMX071 sensor, as in their Alpha 580, & Pentax K-5 = total realism:

    Pentax K-5: HD Video Sample

    watch?v=o89lLQhtURU

=) NICE! I'm leaning toward the Pentax, as it has a stainless steel body with magnesium shell, instead of the Nikon which people say breax easy 'cuz plastic =( Maybe the sony brand - who knows. Still researching! I bet the Arri Alexa uses the Sony sensors, as has natural look, unlike RED.

  • @TechGeek95 I just checked your vids. They both have inaccurate color & contrast combined with poor shadow detail compared 2 the Nikon D5100. Hell the 2'nd 1 is W/the turtle worse than a well adjusted $50 Sanyo Xacti off Fleabay! What kind of fool posts vid with washed out highs as an example of maximum performance? ROFL!! =))

  • Try not to sit in a room and explain things and there is a lot of echo.

  • 7:24 - car on the bridge is disappeared!

    wtf?!

  • @DmitriyPra

haha yeah i also noticed that... notice he blinks unusually as well, he did that cut really well...

  • AWESOME!

  • is NIKKOR 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G good and suitable for nikon d5100? what can you recommend other lens may fit or good for nikon d5100.pls reply.thanks.

  • thx for the video buddy i really liked this detailed comparison and it did help me to decide which one of these too i will soon get :) cheers

  • I have a D5100 and I love it to death. I am now looking to purchase a shoe-mount flash. Do you have any suggestions on the best one for the D5100? Thank you.

  • Best review-comparison of these two cameras, thanks. I am very happy with my canon 600D.

  • i seriously dont know which one to buy

  • @matthewthomas1234567 if u haven't already bought one. Go with 600D/T3i, as it has more pro features than D5100 and the bundle softwares are much more advanced, such as shooting from ur pc. Nikon D5100 has only the image sensor to boost about, which also falls short to 600D/T3i when compared side by side at iso 100-1600 which is what you'll shoot the most, at iso 1600 and up D5100 is better but u'll rarely go that high, even if u go that high the photos aren't as great as at iso 100-1600.

  • Many people dont know that the difference in the sensor size between this two cameras combined with the different megapixel resolution effects the image quality, colour depth, dynamic range, low light shooting and high ISO capability. the Nikon D5100 has a bigger sensor with less megapixels then the Canon T3i, in professional laboratory tests comparing this two sensores performances, the Nikon D5100 gave better results. this info is on the net. for photography the Nikon D5100 is the cemera.

  • @elishlomo The Nikon sensor is technically larger, but only fractionally so: it measures 23.6x15.6mm compared to 22.3x14.9mm for the EOS 600D / T3i. That's not enough to make any significant difference as far as my tests are concerned. What's important as you've suggested, is the number of pixels, along with the processing. This is all academic though, Just go to my D5100 review at cameralabs . com and you can see direct image quality comparisons between them and decide for yourself.

  • russian alfabet on a desk

  • I'm sorry for the non-camera question, but the scenery you offer your presentation in front of is incredibly beautiful. Where did you film this?

  • @subpoprec No problem, it was filmed around Queenstown, New Zealand. Please click the link below the video to see part 2 and more information...

  • hahahaha i live where you live you were at the museum in arrowtown hahah

  • @NovaMains I sure was - great museum, unfortunately not so good for recording sound...

  • I have a question. I shoot primarily video and many of them are hiking up mountains and outdoors. Would I be better suited with a DSLR like the T3i, or a Camcorder in a similar price range? I have experience with the D5000, which I liked but it was hard w/out autofocus for what I shoot (many times movement and by myself). I really like the ability to take high quality stills and have control over video settings all in one. Just would appreciate your opinion on it. Thanks

  • ok, but what about the image quality? when it comes to jpeg processed by the camera, which camera gives better pictures in term of sharpeness, contrast and saturation? I used to shoot with the d3100 and the idea i got from that camera was that images were really soft. so i had to shoot raw and spent hours editing my raw files to get better sharpeness. is it the same with the d5100? I´ve rread somewhere that its images are even better than the d7000 (!!!)

  • @britestube all my image quality results and comparisons are in my reviews at cameralabs . com

  • I am completely new to DSLR's, and haven't done much photography before. Based on yours and others' reviews, I am looking at the Canon T3i right now. However, some people prefer the T2i. Can you give me an opinion on that?

  • @streulpita Sure thing, just go to my 600D / T3i review at cameralabs - I've compared them on the verdict page

  • 9 idiots were here.

  • I need help guys, im stuck between the Canon EOS 550D and the 600D, I am more into the film side rather than photography but i also like to do still shots as well...If anybody can tell me which one is a better overall camera please send me a message or comment back. Thanks!

  • @goldenguy12345 if you like filming, 600D is the one to pick.. the articulated lcd screen will help and the video result won't be less than 550D. They both use same sensor, so practically similar result, but 600D has more features

  • Wow your reviews are really amazing but I'm not surw which one to pick..

I love everything about the canon T3i but the grip is just...it feels "cheap" like not safe in my hand.

Also, I'm just starting on photography and I think this one would be really good.

But I have a question about lenses, can I use lenses from the cameras that used film? or can I only use lenses from the new canon cameras?

  • @Tuticrafts Thanks! You can use any Canon lens on a Canon DSLR, but remember all of them will effectively have their focal length multiplied by 1.6 times. So most lenses designed for film won't be very wide on a DSLR.

  • very helpful video and amazing video quality! I was set on getting the 5100 but after watching/reading lots of reviews the 600d seems better overall. They're about the same price too which makes picking one even harder! Canon 600d it is :)

  • Exceptional review. Really, REALLY helpful, and well done!

  • @nilberg Thanks! Make sure you clikc the link under the video to see part 2!

  • I must say, you have some amazing landscapes behind you in your videos. You really put a lot of effort into them.

  • @SpazztikNinjaFilms Thankyou! This videot ook ages to put together... Make sure you see part 2 at cameralabs . com!

  • I'm new to your channel, and it inspires confidence to see how exceptionally good looking the photography is in your videos, especially at the level of cameras you review. It's always a bit odd watching a semi-pro-and-above camera review* that is shot with little imagination. The content is quite excellent, too. Thanks for the work!

    * New videos. I can hardly blame videos shot before quality skyrocketed.
