I have lived in the south of spain and have heard this music in various styles. I am by no way an expert, but your style is your style and nobody has to say anything about that. You play as you feel and I feel it as great, so take no notice of negative comments. Carry on being yourself and playing in your way, enhora buena.
Gitanoz and other like him annoy me. Jason rocks! Question: you are referring to Rajagopal playing the "Tablas". Sometimes he made it sound like a cajon, other times like the Indian tabla. It sounded great. Do you ever play with anyone on the darbuka?
PS: One of the things that makes music interesting is the dynamics. Jason uses them expertly. Go to school.
Jason, I hear people making comments about your right hand...I am working with dancers and expanding into solo playing. I see and hear nothing wrong with your right hand.
Maybe the people posting are spanish or gitano that just don't like to see a american player who really feels flamenco...it can happen you know.
I am listening to Antonio Rey, Vicente Amigo, Paco etc...you are fine dude, Ole.
It sucks to have to defend yourself. Let's have the people who bring up issues post a video.
I am a jazz/rock/fusion drummer. Our artistic concepts evolve and change as our lives move forward, new collaborators are embraced, etc. Some people don't gravitate as much to passion and intensity. But when I witnessed Jason's mad skills in San Francisco Oct 1, 2008, I was blown away! I happen to respond most to artists who have devoted themselves enough to master the technique they need and then deploy that hard won knowledge and play as if each performance could be their last!
Huge *GRINS* and a hat tip to Brooke Zern, very much traditionalist, but as the adage says, "evolve or die"... and Jason is one evolving life form! LOVE IT! I'll get that violin sample to you soon... we gotta hook up! ~ Mark O @ Kai's
This is one the best Alegrias I have ever heard. I'm surprised to hear some of the criticism about your heavy hands. Frankly grow some balls people. Jason you are a major bad ass. Put another flamenco disc out for me. PLEASE.
As Oscar Wilde said: "be yourself, everyone else is taken", so no problem with that. However, to quote another great intellect: "'Come to the edge', he said. They said 'We are afraid.''Come to the edge', he said. They came. He pushed them and they flew." (Guillaume Apollinaire). Just trying to help make you 'fly' with the greats like Paco, Tomatito, Vicente..cos they;re soaring.
the point is Jason, a master like Paco balances the frenetic side of blistering picado runs, golpe with the index finger etc.. out with feeling and subtelty.. which stops it sounding 'too much'/overdone..less is more sometimes..otherwise we're in endanger of being another 'Manitas de Plata'..
No. It was on the original release of Distancias, but Bolero Records decided it wasn't commercial enough. I may release it again later on a different CD.
jason, i personally have not seen anyone play quite like you and i feel like it's almost innovative. i LOVE your technique. it inspires me to play music! although i can't so in a way your music pisses me off some, but in a good way...
I agree totally with you. This guy is also too heavy handed- you don't need to bash the hell out of your guitar to show passion and fire it is much more subtle than that.
Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townsend bashed the hell out of their guitars. I have been a dance accompanist for many years and though playing for dance requires a more heavy handed technique, I don't think it rises to level of "bashing the hell out of your guitar". In the end it is my own personal expression and it deosn't work for you, all I can say is sorry.
The 700 people in the auditorium didn't seem to mind my heavy hands.
those guys are the same people who say joe satriani plays too fast and jimmy page plays too sloppy. I think your playing is freaking awsome... makes me want to go out and get my self some flamenco lessons. i really hope you play in the san francisco bay area some time.
i must agree with Gitanoz. u are very good, but u tend to exagerate the force u put into your play. forcefull is nice, but often your guitar sounds like a wardrum! When you attack the strings to hard, the melody and tone is nearly bashed out of them and it sounds like a car accident!
The 700 people get excited when a lot of noise and rythm is happening. And they came to clap their hands anyway...sooo, dont use them as an excuse. listen to what people say, we watch a lot of diferent players!
Perhpas his intention was to creat a wardrum sound at that particular time during the performance. That's the cool thing about music, it is open to interpretation by all.
Outstanding! Can't wait for your flamenco classes series : step by step from A to Z: how to play, practice, file nails, pick a guitar etc.. There is NOTHING out there.
I'm a beginning flamenco player (web developer by day) . If you need help with with the site, just let me know.
I will have a website up and running by September that will offer lessons online. Get ready www.flamenco-lessons.com is coming! Don't forget to buy my CD at http://www.bolero-records.com
