It's really indestructible. A friend of my uncle had this model. He drove over a water puddle while he had 120 kph. His car rolled over through 3 lanes, grass, second set of three lanes and ended up on the construction site. But his car wasn't completely totaled. I had few DOZENS of dents and stuff. The windows and windshild were shattered, but the frame was in pretty good shape and the engine still worked. As for this friend. He ended up with a cut on his forehead and that's it.
steamwally PLEASE! Don't make me laugh any harder! Lada probably might be the Russian word for shit. My dad had to rent one when he was in Greece a long time ago and it was so bad that the odometer winds back when in reverse! And that scene in the movie "Company Business" where the good guys just kicked the door to break into it is somewhat true. Parts do fall off. It was in one car magazine's list of the 10 worst cars ever made. Also, they love, LOOOOOVE rust!
@dimkavenom (well i understood what you say, but i don't like talking in Russian) I'm not from Vilnius and yes here are lots of Russian cars (mostly ZIL's, lada's, GAZ 53's... but on rare occasions you can see one or two volgas)
You're doing it the dangerous way. You should never push a crank because if it stops suddenly, you're going to bend your wrist.
The safe way is getting the crank on the lowest position and pull up. It is also easier because you can use your legs to pull up and in case the crank stops, the force will be made against your fingers (instantly releasing grip) rather than against your wrist. Nice Lada by the way. Simple technology has a magic of it's own. :)
I had Lada 1200L -72 model, in Finland. My frieds didnt believe, that lada was crank start. In summer, motor started on one try. LOL, in Finnish gas station, many people looked wtf. "LUJAA LAATUA LADA" strong quality Lada free translation.
@McLarenMercedes It is for backup use or if you simply want to turn the engine over easy when you adjust the valves clearance. Actually, most Soviet cars came with hand cranks from the factory, including the older Ladas, Moskvitch, Volga and Zaporozhets too, i think.
@McLarenMercedes These hand crank's was on most soviet cars. It's purpose is to start a car in extreme cold or when the battery had disscharged. It's very useful thig :) . I had 4 lada's so far starting with made in 1976 and ending at 1986. All of them had these hand crank's.
@McLarenMercedes It's mostly for people living in colder countries. Like the original version (Fiat 124) not had this option, only the early russian models (with round headlight). Even if you want to start the engine using the anlasser, you can make the starting procedure much easier at extreme low temperature (when the battery is very weak), with "breaking" the ice cold oil and let rich mixture into the engine turning it by hand. But it helps adjusting ignition or the chain tension by the way.
@McLarenMercedes Simpler carmodels with few horsepowers from Renault could also be hand cranked, (atleast until the early seventies) using the opposite side of the original tool for wheel replacement. Very handy in cold winter conditions.
@cliffthelightning Well, the chances of that happening are very small. I think you'll notice that it's in gear as soon as you turn the crank just a little bit.
This is a 2103 and my 21053 has this car's engine as the 3 of the type 21053 says.. so on the motor there you can find the crank hole but on the carosserie no hole :)
there's no money to be made on people who can help themselves. welcome to the modern world.

That's the invention that is missing in todays Cars :/
Even if the Battery is dead u could start the Lada with this simple hand crank...
And today? If the Car won't everyone calls for help but with an handcrank they could help themselve, if they weren't too lazy ;)

Interesting. Did this hand crank come equiped on older Ladas? Never seen one ever, and not heard anything about it even in the former Soviet Union.
Was this some option for people in the countryside which had limited use of electricity? Or just a back up in case the battery got drained?
