The bottom line is, McCain wanted Lieberman on the ticket and was told, emphatically, NO. In a characteristic fit of rage, he chose the most ridiculous person he could find after meeting her for exactly five hours. True story.
This campaign has been a revelation about so many....for example, I once respected cokie roberts...but she has been shown to be more interested in defending the woman than in what is best for the country...I used to dislike Peggy Noonan but this campaign has shown her to be a truly thoughtful person who is more concerned about the country than her party....I used to have disdain for limbaugh and hannity...well, I still do have disdain for them!
Wow McCain was just falling on his face in that nonsensical defense of Palin. Umm, she simply doesn't know things, and that's unacceptable. McCain was a Maverick before 2000. After Bush, McCain has been 90%+ Bush politics (the ONLY exception being the torture thing). McCain is old, and questionable health to lead for 4 years. He has had trouble comprehending such things as the Czech Republic (which he CONSTANTLY refers to as Czechoslovakia, which broke apart YEARS ago), he couldn't even remember who endorsed him, and you think he'll be able to remember where he put the nuclear codes? Please.
That's why he has a staff. You have to have brilliant men and women around you in your administration. I believe he will have the best people on both sides of the isle with him.
"I believe he will have the best people on both sides of the isle [aisle] with him."
If you're talking about Obama I agree. He has mainstream Repubs. like Colin Powell and Bill Weld supporting him.
If you're talking about McCain, no way. Remember, McCain's staff in Pennsylvania were pushing the Ashley Todd hoax before the police had even started their investigation. Has McCain fired that incompetent staff? I doubt it. And I'd hardly call Palin "the best" VP choice he could have made.
I was talking about McCain. Doesn't he have a track record for working with Dems in the Senate? As for Powell, as much as I like him, I don't think he has ever been a "mainstream Republican." When McCain is sworn in, I think he'll surprise you with the people he picks.

To me this one reckless decision compromised all his bipartisan credentials.
thucy, I respect your concern over Palin as VP. Many Republicans feel the same type of reservation when it comes to Obama being President. He hasn't had much governing experience. We really don't know how McCain or Obama will fair as leader of the United States. What they(canidates)say now usually tends to change when they get in office. I'm just hoping the country will be okay with either of these guys.
hoop: when McC won the GOP nod I thought: "Ok, I don't like his politics, but he's smart and independent, and at least his term won't be a disaster like W." Then he picked Palin, which blew it for me, for a whole lot of reasons.
By contrast, Obama wasn't my first choice as a Dem., but when he picked Biden I thought, "OK, he doesn't have much experience, but he recognizes his shortcomings and picked someone with foreign policy cred."
McCain/Hutchinson would have been a tough ticket to beat.
I agree with you on the Biden choice. Smart move by Obama. You know... the whole Palin thing is a stange thing. She isn't the typical politician and that's why I think some people like her, but then again, would I be totally comfortable if she had to be President? Sometimes I wonder about that. I'll say this though, I do NOT believe she is dumb, like many try to make her out to be.
Of course McCain feels the need to pander to the right just like Obama panders to left. They have to satisfy their base supporters if they expect to win the election. I know a lot of Republicans were not excited about the election until Palin came on board. I don't have a problem with her.
Obama has pissed off a lot of the left. He supports a continued presence in Afghanistan and the bailout, won't come out for single-payer, and the Biden pick was seen as a tack to the center.
I have problems with someone who labels some parts of the US more "pro-American" than others. I don't see "small town values" as any better than the values of folks in NYC, who all pulled together on 9-11.
The politics of division have wrecked this country. In that regard, Palin is more of the same.
Both the left and the right contribute to the division in this country. Our reps in congress continue the politics as usual bull-shit and we the people suffer. The media as well is sickening sometimes. MSNBC, Fox, CBS... all of them have very little integrity when it comes to fair news reporting. Who can you trust?
I'm voting McCain because I think he represents more of my beliefs as an individual than Obama does, but I certainly won't expect much from the government.
Hoop:I mostly agree with your comments on the media etc.
As for Palin, aside from all my concerns about her, I wonder if her pick is an example of what McCain's decisions would be like in office.
But we'll just have to agree to disagree. Obviously you've put some serious thought into your choice (as have I), so I don't expect we'll be able to convince each other with 500 ct. U2B posts.
And so, best wishes to you and yours. Let's hope whatever happens Nov. 4, it works out for the best.
thucy- It's been fun talking to you. I respect you and your opinion and appreciate your comments. It's obvious you care about the country, and you're very informed. Best wishes as well to you and yours.
hooptron - NONSENSE. In order to be a good leader, you have to have the competence yourself to lead, let alone choose those around you. So you want a fucking figurehead puppet with a "good staff". I'm sorry, but that DOESN'T CUT IT.
Yes, I think he will be elected. (the race has tightend up recently)I agree with you on needing competence to lead. I DO think McCain has the ability to lead our country AND choose a great staff. It will be close race, but McCain will come out on top.
Hoop: but if McCain dies in office-and there is a statistically significant chance he will-he'll be replaced by someone even less suited to the office than G.W. Bush. It's too scary even to consider.
Obama lacks much national experience (as did Lincoln, and to a lesser degree JFK) but he's enormously intelligent and seems to have a knack for staying cool under pressure, picking good people, and thinking through the problem. And Biden would make a fine president, in his own right.
I totally see what you're saying. As I said earlier though, I think McCain will pick a brilliant staff of people to help run the government if something happens to him. (God forbid) I think the length of his term in office would be a huge factor. If something were to happen say in his third year...I'm sure Palin andd staff could handle it. A lot of "ifs" though. Palin is pretty smart too. (I know you don't agree)
This bullshit that she has more executive experience is just fucking ridiculous. She was the governor of Moose, Bears, Wolves and a few people. If you have a state that is rich in resources and money how hard can it possibly be to sit in an office and make decisions like how many wolves need to be killed...blah blah. I guess my point is she has never dealt with "real" life problems.
It seems as though McCain has aged 5 years in the few months since he chose Palin. A move he will regret for life. I truly believe if he had chosen Romney or Ridge, he would have won this election. I really think he would have won on the "experience" and "foreign policy" and with Romney, the economic collapse wouldn't have effected him politically as much as it has...
by his own measure she has more executive experience than McCain himself.....which is tragic all around for all of us ...as she has only been an executive for less than 2 years....aside from that aberration her resume is extremely weak.
I love the Tidal wave of stupidity that rampages its way through America in the final week before the people cast their vote in the Presidential election, it's better than any Michael Bay movie.
***anyone one els sick n tired of Sarah's annoying piercing voice n her hair up like a Turban,,,come to think of it ,,she looks like an Afghan somewhat, and with that Turban hair due on her birdbrain head magnifies that. dam her voice is so annoying.
*mac should have piked hukabee. n Obsama should have piked tom dashal
I like McCain, I really do, and I think deep down he's a good guy. But man, he's just done such a piss-poor job since getting the nomination. It's really quite sad.
Obama is simply talking about rolling back Bush's tax breaks for the wealthiest in the nation and giving those breaks to the rest of the people. The McCain campaign is blowing it out of proportion to scare people. "Redistribution" is just their campaign rhetoric and does not really apply to what Obama is talking about. I think too many people think they are entitled to a house, car, two kids, college etc. and don't realize that those aren't options for some folks.
I understand your post. I am in the same boat($675. per month for student loans). The way I read the Obama tax plan is that on my first $250K, I have to pay the same as everyone else... anything above that, I am required to pay an additional 3%. I can live with that rather than what we have had for the last 8 years. everyone should have listened to, and heard what Ron Paul was saying. You all missed the boat.
Palin is a complete idiot. Since the republican party is really just the rednecks these days it isn't surprising that they picked the dumbest fucking person possible. I secretly think McCain doesn't want to win.
McCain: "i thought she did fine"
Id doesn't matter what you think fool, it matters what the voters think. She's done fucking terrible. I hope i never hear the word "maverick" again.
I would like someone on this website to tell me what extremly wealthy is. I have worked damn hard, went to school 12 years, have more student loans than most of you could understand. Now I find myself falling right into Obamas redistributionist tax plan. This will hurt all of us. you youngs pups just dont know the difference between different types of gov. I also think too many people expect/demamd things from their gov.
Its about more than taxes. Obama said that the constitution limited the SUPREM COURTS ability to "redistribute" wealth during the civil rights movemnt. With a liberal congress, a Marxist pres. and a compliant media we will see over the next months/years, that we made a mistake. Remember the U.S media loved Musalini also. Do they still teach real U.S/World Hist. in school. Do you know what Marxism is even. We will regret CHANGING America in this way.
"I really believe that when you reach a certain level of comfort there's nothing wrong with paying somewhat more.(...) I think the debate in this country is more about tax cuts rather than anything else. I think the first people who deserve a tax cut are working Americans with children that need to educate their children, and there the ones that I would support tax cuts for first."
"I believe that when you really look at the tax code today the very wealthy b/c they can afford tax lawyers and all kinds of loopholes really don't pay nearly as much as you think they do when you just look at the percentages. And I think middle income Americans, working Americans when you count in payroll taxes, sales taxes mortgage -all of the taxes that working Americans pay, I think you would think they also deserve significant relief in my view."
McCain has demonstrated beyond all doubt, by his ludicrously unsuitable vice-presidential candidate, that he lacks the good judgment that is the primary qualification to be President.
I agree--McCain has really screwed up on this decision--didn't do his homework on troopergate, her associations with the Alaska independence party--now this wardrobe expense...it like watching a train wreck.
Mavericks my ass. Grumpy-Mean McCain didn't even tell her "hey, by the way, we are withdrawing from Michigan". She knew about this reading the news... (don't ask which newspaper... nowadays, that's a "gotcha" question for a Republican). She was picked to be the bimbo who would appeal to women in this country. Bad news to McCain: women in this country are not stupid. His wife might be. But not the average woman in the US.
They can't even stop attacking each other! Do you honestly think these two STOOGES could run America?
My GOD, this is an embarrassing time to be an American. The terrorists must be laughing at us to. The Republican party and many Democrats are a total joke. When Obama is elected this crap will no longer have a place in America. Under Bush we are FAR removed from the GREAT country we once were.
ALL MCCAIN/Palin does is ATTACK , ATTACK, ATTACK! No TANK YOU
today somebody from the mccain camp told politico that palin is "a whack job". yikes! we already knew mccain was a whack job when he called his supporters "my fellow prisoners". the republican ticket this year against the backdrop of 8 worrisome years of george bush, is increasingly looking like an unacceptable proposition. now it seems as though they can not get along with each other even though they share a less than mainstream ideology. how could they be expected to unite this country anyway?
"What did we do wrong? We preyed on their fears of terrorists, communism, and taxes, we managed to find a candidate who's even more stupid than Bush, we swift boated Obama, and ran the nastiest ads in the history of elections. WHY ISN'T THIS WORKING???"
McCain needs to take his Maverick ass and giddyup back to Arizona and get well and Palin needs to dog sled back to Alaska, pack up her $150K in clothing and take care of her special needs child.
RNC has accepted defeat already and are setting Palin up to take the fall. You don't have campaign advisors saying that one of their candidates is being a rogue, doesn't listen, etc., a week before an election unless you expect to lose. Setting Palin up as being a rogue takes all responsibility away from McCain and RNC, except for McCain choosing her in the first place. Palin will be vilified more by the Reps every day, mark my word.

I'm glad we are finally going to have a President that we can be proud of again. I live abroad, and I am tired of hearing people talk smack about America. Bush has ruined the reputation of the United States. Barack Obama is going to restore our good name in the world. Obama/Biden 2008!
i am so sick of people saying that executive expereince is so important to be a president not brains and temperament. See we had a mba president for the last 8 years who was also governor of texas. what good did it do? nothing. and her "executive experience that is so laughable. her patriotism. her busband was in that party which wanted an independent alaska and her ran shadow govt in alaska. she is as corrupt as bush, she lies like bush and she is as stupid as bush
John has been told that the voting machine fix is in. Example : voting machines have wireless links and can be changed from someone in the parking lot, very easy. There is a secret war going on against the cheating and it will be successful. McCain is cheerful and always smiling now because he thinks he has it in the bag. Thank Carl Rove has been coaching Republicans on how to cheat since the 1970's. After the New Hampshire primary, the cheating stopped. Cheating was prevented in Nov.2006.
Finding out what a maverick really is, aren't you John.
A maverick is a pain in the ass person who is hard to deal with and doesn't listen to anyone. And you found yourself one when you picked Sarah Palin. Annoying, isn't she?
Oh wait, I forgot, she's perfect and you aren't defending her against her soaring negatives.
Yes, I say "Go Mavericks" And THANKS John for picking the pain in your ASS. Go Palin give them hell and continue to let them know that you are a "H. Mom" that spend $18,000 a week on clothing.
We are overdue to try some "trickle up" economics. Companies make more if people can afford to buy things.
The economics of making wealthy people more wealthy in the hopes they will tinkle down prosperity on the proles has been tried and tried and tried, and what did we get for it? A 700B bailout and people's 401k's tanking in the stock market.
If you're rich, you can afford to pay taxes. What is so hard to understand about that...
Conservatives will not come out to vote this election. You will see Obama win big but with one of the lowest total of registered voters in history. Obama will then spend 4 years showing what a socialist he is. When all you Obama lovers start paying more for everything you'll look back and wish you had your vote back but it will be too late. When you get your asses laid off because your company can't afford the higher taxes on them blame yourself.
Unlike Republicans, not conservatives, because many of them are staying home or voting for Obama, we do listen to the campaigns. Obama has run a brilliant campaign. McCain's campaign has been a disaster. I believe in Obama, and any fair-minded person would say after 8 years of horror, let's go with the brightest and best candidate, hope over fear and smear. However, if Obama is not what I believe he is, then 4 years from now I will look with an open mind, let's hope you can do the same.
I might point out that we are "paying more for everything" already, under Bush. Also, the only way you pay more taxes is if you make more money. Personally, if I could make enough money to pay high taxes, I would be dancing to the mailbox with my check to the Fed. Because it would mean I was making much much more than I am now.
Any company whose taxes go up by a couple percent and lays off a bunch of people is just looking for an excuse, also witness layoffs now, under Bush tax cuts!
John heh, McCain heh, has lost his marbles!!! He is heh, resembling dubya heh, more and more each day! What has the Rove machine done to this old fart?!
I said go with Tom Ridge former governor and mayor of philly pop 1.4 million Alaska 683 thousand people. now that's just one city vs her entire state. I'm sorry the Republicans have flat lined. I was looking for a repub and I switched. Obama won hands down, all I say is just get Bush out
People, your President doesn't just lead YOU, they represent you on the world stage. Do you really think PALIN could speak with world leaders? She can't string two coherent sentences together! Don't insult women voters by assuming they will vote for her to be First V*gina In the White House.
goodbye America...you used to be the greatest nation in the world, now you are just a sad bunch of lunatics...the world will miss ya but will be better off without you.
McCain has become such a whiner. He has no presidential persona or appeal. I don't want another idiot president making the U.S.A look like a bunch of idiots to the World.
This "dissension" is members of the GOP trying to save face. Mccain's a great guy and a worthy political opponent to Obama, but Palin is too big of a crutch - it was a political gimmick that backfired.
"I'm a maverick, you're a maverick, we are all mavericks!!! "
Speak for yourself I see that being the new insult, instead of calling someone an asshole just call them a maverick. It works so well you can attach so many descriptive words to it. It'll be fun.
McCain is so freaking old! He can't even speak wihout sounding completely unsoothing. He freaks me out but not nearly as much as thinking about Palin in the oval office!
so true, he cant even keep a straight face, like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar, or in this case, a senile old grumpy bastard with his hand...

But we'll just have to agree to disagree. Obviously you've put some serious thought into your choice (as have I), so I don't expect we'll be able to convince each other with 500 ct. U2B posts.
And so, best wishes to you and yours. Let's hope whatever happens Nov. 4, it works out for the best.

hooptron 3 years ago
hooptron - NONSENSE. In order to be a good leader, you have to have the competence yourself to lead, let alone choose those around you. So you want a fucking figurehead puppet with a "good staff". I'm sorry, but that DOESN'T CUT IT.
rarelibra 3 years ago
Yes, I think he will be elected. (the race has tightend up recently)I agree with you on needing competence to lead. I DO think McCain has the ability to lead our country AND choose a great staff. It will be close race, but McCain will come out on top.
hooptron 3 years ago
Hoop: but if McCain dies in office-and there is a statistically significant chance he will-he'll be replaced by someone even less suited to the office than G.W. Bush. It's too scary even to consider.
Obama lacks much national experience (as did Lincoln, and to a lesser degree JFK) but he's enormously intelligent and seems to have a knack for staying cool under pressure, picking good people, and thinking through the problem. And Biden would make a fine president, in his own right.
thucy2 3 years ago

I think too many people think they are entitled to a house, car, two kids, college etc. and don't realize that those aren't options for some folks.
dk2685 3 years ago
I understand your post. I am in the same boat($675. per month for student loans). The way I read the Obama tax plan is that on my first $250K, I have to pay the same as everyone else... anything above that, I am required to pay an additional 3%. I can live with that rather than what we have had for the last 8 years. everyone should have listened to, and heard what Ron Paul was saying. You all missed the boat.

GretchenDawntreader 3 years ago
Conservatives will not come out to vote this election. You will see Obama win big but with one of the lowest total of registered voters in history. Obama will then spend 4 years showing what a socialist he is. When all you Obama lovers start paying more for everything you'll look back and wish you had your vote back but it will be too late. When you get your asses laid off because your company can't afford the higher taxes on them blame yourself.
danapdutcher 3 years ago
Unlike Republicans, not conservatives, because many of them are staying home or voting for Obama, we do listen to the campaigns. Obama has run a brilliant campaign. McCain's campaign has been a disaster. I believe in Obama, and any fair-minded person would say after 8 years of horror, let's go with the brightest and best candidate, hope over fear and smear. However, if Obama is not what I believe he is, then 4 years from now I will look with an open mind, let's hope you can do the same.
Mars1951 3 years ago
I might point out that we are "paying more for everything" already, under Bush. Also, the only way you pay more taxes is if you make more money. Personally, if I could make enough money to pay high taxes, I would be dancing to the mailbox with my check to the Fed. Because it would mean I was making much much more than I am now.
Any company whose taxes go up by a couple percent and lays off a bunch of people is just looking for an excuse, also witness layoffs now, under Bush tax cuts!
