sorry some think Phil Collins ruined the song, never replace the original, however Phil's remake is very good, a little slower and stands the test of great music as well. I appreciate the talent of all artist that can do what I only dream of.
Thank you Toni and Carole for writing this... for myself this one of those songs of adolescence, when the word groovy was still new. For some reason, by the time the 80's came along, you were old if you still used that word.
When I read that Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman (members of one of my favorite mid-70s bands, 10cc) were in this band, I had to listen to this hit single of theirs. Just lovely!
This song is so simple yet it has always been one of my favorites. Maybe that's why, a quaint love song with the best tune, and you can understand the lyrics. Thanks for posting it.
Phil Collins did not ruin the song. Sometimes people just redo songs and they come out better than before. This is a great original version but I personally think Phil Collins did it better.
@iluvsodapop83, I agree with you that Phil Collins did not ruin this song with his version. I like his version, too, but if I put both versions on a scale, The MindBenders' version would probably tip the scale a notch in being my favorite. In my opinion, Phil Collins' version is more romantic and if you are in the mood for making out, that's the version to play.
Yes, this Phil Collins really wreaked havoc on it. The real tragedy is that many who have never heard this, now think that the Phil Collins version is the original....
If we want to finally get the actual STEREO version of this (it does exist...never released on vinyl or CD) we need to let folks KNOW that release things of this nature. One possible hope is ERIC RECORDS (Google them and email them). They released a stereo version of 'Game of Love' on Hard To Find 45's On CD - Volume 12: 60's & 70's Pop Classics.
I just emailed them today. I would buy a compilation CD just for that song. I have heard a tantalizing snippet of it and it haunts me now!!!
no offense to anyone that grew up to this song but, phil collins made this song so much better. i mean for real, phil actually sounded like he put some heart into it.
11th Grade..1966 for me. I have loved this song so much for so long. Smooth and sweet. It always reminded me of this huge crush I had on this girl who never noticed me.
sang this song to a cute girl in the 60s she fell in love with me she also love my beatle mop....u guy out there sing this songto a cutie.c what happenings....
Comparing this original to the Phil Collins inferior remake reminds me years ago of when my brother handed me a diet Dr. Pepper in a glass with ice instead of my favorite regular Pepper as a joke and I took that first sip....
@stations44 Man, you're right on there. Brings you back to a better, more peaceful time. I'd give anything to be back there right now. Very insightful of you...this song maybe more than any other seems to capture the feeling back then.
This video is posted on Facebook page called "Golden Tunes - Sound of Oldies", so if you have fb account and some time, check it, i guess you will like it :) Page is for everyone who like like warm cozy sound of evergreen music.

This song was the very first seven single I owned, one of my brothers gave it to me, and around the same time another really lovely song hit the airwaves, I'm not sure I have the lyrics correct, if anybody could let me know the correct title and artist, I will be forever thankful, and be released from my searching, ... the lyrics " I look back to see if you look back, and you look back to see if I look back to see if you look back to see if I were looking back at you"...... sounds familiar?
Funny how a song can make such an impact on someone's recall that they remember the first time they hear it. Glad it made such an impression on you as well!
First time I heard this song was Friday evening, June 3, 1966 @6:30 PM. Obviously this song had a big impact on me that I would remember such detail about it!
@chuckbuckbobuck it has that aura and mystique-- I broke up with a lady and I happened to purchase this 45 RPM shortly thereafter-- I remember the store, location and the time in my life! Great music does that!!! Needless to say that store is gone, and that was 1982 ![16 or so years after its release]
Phil is great but missed on this bad, not dreamy or mindbending at all , but at least he knew a good one. A 60's childhood would never have been complete without this coming out of a portable AM..... hippies everywhere..... love.... creative.....expanding us.....
A classic performance. I remember June 1966 in Ithaca New York. It was so beautiful, and this song was perfect. What a pity the girl didn't match up to the song or the place.
@whouster Why is it whenever someone does a cover of a song someone screams "they're butchering it!" Phil Collins most certainly did NOT butcher it. He added his own kind of spin to it and added more to what was always a great song. Some people need to take the bugs out of their butts.
@MIESCHKI65 I always thought it was another Phil Collins song, and I always hated it and thought it was corny and ridiculous, but after hearing this original version I think this one is actually great and sounds beautiful, great drums too.

Collin's version doesn't come close to being as good as this. This is much better with the strong background vocals.
