  • young78,

If you want to see how REALLY NOT to do it,look at this clip!

  • Well jyoung78.

I have been watching and taking part in G&S in the UK for over 40 years.Yes,there is a fine line between camp and kitsch, but I think this definitely errs on the camp(acceptable) side.

Sadly,if we want to bring G&S to more people we have to make it more immediate,we certainly cannot go back to basics for a high school recital, and I think they sang very well, and restricted their " high jinks" to what was necessary to the libretto.

G&S should always be fun,and this WAS fun!

  • It's actually faculty members performing for high school students of a performing arts camp. It's meant to be silly.

  • It's actually faculty members performing for high school

  • I think it was just a small school play, not a huge production.

It's mean't to be over the top, relax!

  • Absolutely delightful

  • haha that was fantastic!

  • in response to all the "how this should be played" commentary...The Mikado is a social commentary of England that happens to be set in Japan...the Japanese setting is entirely superficial. Almost everything about G & S is social comedy and sattire

  • How awesome they are!! I love it! great video

  • this is kool lol we got to do this song for our festival im practiceing now but this was just funny and kool !

  • It's supposed to be played that way, this whole play is making fun of the way Westerners saw the Japanese.

  • No, it is NOT supposed to be played that way...G&S is funny but is not supposed to be a farce.

  • Actually, the intention of Gilbert and Sullivan was to satirise British politics by disguising the play as Japanese.

  • get in the 21st century,it is brilliant

  • I thought it inspiring ... anyone heard of Black Mikado?

  • I despise the "let's ham it up and make it so tacky they have to laugh" approach to Gilbert & Sullivan. Perform G & S the way it was meant to be performed. The audience will be entertained without forcing cheap laughs and crying "hey look, we're being goofy. Aren't we funny!"

  • Pff, it was a faculty recital for some high school kids. Give it a rest.

  • That doesn't mean that they couldn't have presented the material with some dignity.

  • These were teachers humiliating themselves for the entertainment of their students. Dignity is not in the same zip code.
