@LoogieV -not too good at this, but ,im almost 50,and have liked them since the start (82-83 ? )-they were Southern Death Cult , Death Cult, and finally, The Cult.why the changes of names ,looks , and sound.....no idea
I read once, somewhere, that they had to change/tone it down/become more marketable/mainstream (their SDC/DC name) if they were to acquire a record label/support.And that's how it goes in the big pond kiddies.
From '81 to '84 what the fuck do you expect? It wasn't like some overnight manicure, makemeover. from SDC to the Cult was a conscious transformation and I still have yet to hear any one SDC song that rocks the fuck same as "She Sells".
Yes, they were deathrock. They aren't anymore, but they definitely were. It's kind of like when Pantera was glam. Pantera morphed into metal, but at one time they were glam. So Ian Astbury was deathrock stylin' then he morphed into rock. Shit happens, bands change. They want to get paid. More money in rock and roll and metal.
@ 64born Yip,no Billy here as this is 'Southern death cult,Billy was in 'Theatre of hate' back then.Ian left this lot and formed 'Death Cult' with Billy.the band later became 'the Cult'.when Ian left this band the other 3 carried on as the short lived 'Getting the fear',

I am sorry. I've been a huge Cult fan since 1985, but in this period Ian's voice sucks!! It's false. Music ain't so special either. Again, sorry... CFFC
@Tobbedans I'm guessing you and few others came into this fans of the AOR/Rock/Metal version of The Cult, and were surprised (unpleasantly?) to see Ian's postpunk/deathrock roots. Southern Death Cult is very different from The Cult, as you've obviously figured. Still, they meant a lot to their small but devoted fanbase of dark punk lovers.
When I first discovered them and bought the fatman/moya 12" I was convinced he was actually a red indian, totally intense, amazing sound and energy, blown away.
I remember seeing this on live TV and noticing Ian's star quality - his on-stage energy and charisma shone. Technically the band were deemed amateurish but i beg to differ; their sound was unique-powerful-thought provoking. Not sure what happened to the other members of the band - i don't believe Billy was with Ian back then, but yeah, a great period for Ian. Shine-on.

@ThePENON Ha, you're stupid it's cute. Would you prefer Robert Plant clone? Ian WAS unique, yes, prior to about 1985-6. I like him, and love the Southern Death Cult/Death Cult and early Cult. I highly DISlike these creative musicians later degenerating into middle of the road, AOR cock rock.
4Your information... "Southern DC" are not the same band than The Cult is... Just IaN Astbury are a member from both groups... Billy´s a "Theatre of Hate extract...
It's very odd that these guys completely ditched this look and this sound to become The Cult. There isn't even a logical progression from one to the other...it was just, as Monty Python used to say: "...and now for something completely different."
@garethac81 : I agree. I love Southern Death Cult. My friend who knew them way before me told me to listen to Love and it's one of the greatest album ever. I see that one being sort of generic and this one full of raw (sorry I know, cliche, but true) energy and feeling. I listen to it for how it makes me feel, not just how it sounds. I wish I could have been there at these shows.
@garethac81 I guess when Ian went to do his own thing, he wanted to do something with his rock influences? If you listen to Death Cult and the first couple of Cult LPs I think you can here a progression. After that I admit it does seem fragmented :P
@garethac81 they sold out that's what I heard Ian Astbury didn't even want to he was pushed into that 80's hair metal scene very sad isn't it? The others kept the same sound for a while and had a side band with a girl can't think of the name but it was the same exact style as southern death cult.
@garethac81 From joy division and theatre of hate to jim morisson and the doors - I think it was a natural progression. both avenues quite dark and raw and similar I think

The Southern Death Cult's first ever performance was at the Queen's Hall in Bradford, England, on 29 October 1981. The setlist the band played was: "Crow", "The Girl", "Apache", "Vivisection", "Moya" and "The Crypt", with a bootleg recording of that show in circulation. Anybody got a copy?????,
I've got some bad news for you matey, they did the 1in12 club in Bradford on 22nd October 1981, I'd like to say that I was there, but that would be a lie, although I was a regular in the 1in12 club a year later. You can google 1in12 and check their archive. I saw SDC at the Warehouse in Leeds in 1982 (or maybe early 83).
And when he's singing about bringing christainity to your land, it's about the american settlers. trading lives for beads, bringing christianity to the red indians, f#cking them over and robbing them of their land.
The A in a circle is Anarchism, it's was just a symbol of the times. He went on to be a heavy rocker.......WTF?. Punk and all that, was just a thing which was happening at that time, he bought the T shirt, but didn't really live the life. It was just fashion in the UK at that time. Search for 'Crass', they were anarchists
I'm pretty sure that's not an anti-christ symbol. I'm not an expert, but I have never seen one like that. If anything its similar to the anarchy symbol. Its probably a shirt for some other band.. or its just something he found in a thrift store :P
Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy -- no matter what name they played under -- kicked total ass! Ian always stole the stage, but he couldn't have done it without Billy. Billy's bad ass to the bone!
This is among the greatest music i ever heard in my life. I deeply recommend their only album THE SOUTHERN DEATH CULT. It makes me shiver. Ian astbury was never never again so good in his career. This band rips everything apart. Each member contributed an incredible intensity to the sound. And this is one of their few not so brilliant songs. By the way, Ian did a damn good job as Jim Morrison impersonator in the Doors, treated Jim´s work with the greatest respect.
This band , even in it's later incantation were way ahead of their time. I don't know if it's Ian Astbury's voice or just the whole band itself that makes me think if they came out in the early 90's, they would set a trend even then. Thanks for this.
Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Rev 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come.
Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
For those who didn't know, lead singer Ian Astbury lived in Canada during his teens and befriended Indians, then went back to England to play with a post-punk band. Upon coming to America, they became The Cult, but Ian's uniqueness made him uncomfortable with his band's later well-deserved fame.
I like a majority of Uk 77 Punk bands. However my two Favorites are The Buzzcocks and Chelsea. I would also like to say that Skrewdriver's All Skrewed up is a Punk Classic as well.
Great song but the lyrics make less sense than a Nirvana song. It's like he's talking about Jerusalem but also native americans. I guess it's best not to think about it.
It's sad seeing teenyboppers with "punk" hot topic gear, and if you ask them w hat their favorite band is their answer is most likely to be "Sex pistols lyk omg"
A rip off of The Damned? Are you having a laugh? Anyway both coppied the Stooges so its rather a mute point. The Damned started to get worse when Brian James left and pretty much sucked through 1980s onwards. The only reason people in certain circles pretend to like crap like Stawberries, is because Dave Vanian wears black clothes and make-up. Fact.
Most punk bands took a page from the Stooges but you're right that the Damned did to a large degree. On Neat Neat "I feel alright" is basically a remake of "1970". I never loved the pistols though, they were kind of like the Monkees of punk rock, put together by Malcolm McClarren. To this day I still don't own any pistols records.
First of all I'd appreciate it if you typed properly, secondly on what basis do you have the right to call the sex pistols ''the britney spears of punk''?. Very early Gothic music was born out of the early 70s punk boom and Ian Astbury will gladly admit that SDC in essence was highly influenced by acts such as the Sex Pistols.
Stop trying to be funny, I'm 27 years old and from London, I was raised on John Lydon, I assume you are no more than 14 by that completely childish & inane statement.
I always wished he'd kept this style. Though they may have been an influence, this sounds nothing like what the Sex Pistols did. Both punk, but very different. I can't think of any other band that sounded like SDC. All the instruments stand out too. Awesome guitar, bass, and drums. And Ian's voice is a one of a kind. I like Death Cult and The Cult too by the way. It's all good.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This music sounds awful compared to the stuff they played in later years in the mid 1980s as The Cult. By the way like most early gothic bands they emerged from the ashes of the first wave of punk, with some members having been in Bradford punk band Violation.
this has to be the most faggot use of a guitar ever.

@garethac81
SDC was only a band for 15 or 16 months
Death Cult started in '83 with only Astbury and three new band members.
Excluding the change in drummers the line-up for DC was the same for The Cult's 1st album Dreamtime('84).
The difference between DC and Dreamtime isn't that extreme. Love('85) was a departure from Dreamtime and Electric('87) was a departure from Love.
Love it or hate it the Cult's sound is truly an evolution that few bands could or would make by choice.

The Cult was a good pop band but SDC had incredible energy.

Thanks for the info. I thought it was him based on his voice alone.

Maybe hes singing about the book of Mormons?

so, who's this guy singing... oh, you mean, Ian Astbury without long black flowing hair? ;-)

It's sad seeing teenyboppers with "punk" hot topic gear, and if you ask them w hat their favorite band is their answer is most likely to be "Sex pistols lyk omg"
I love Southern Death Cult..

haha yeah. and the only pistols song they've ever heard is anarchy in the uk, and they have no idea who johnny rotten is

I like him better in PiL. the Sex pistols are mdeiocre and a rip-off of The Damned.
Lobotomyu 3 years ago
A rip off of The Damned? Are you having a laugh? Anyway both coppied the Stooges so its rather a mute point. The Damned started to get worse when Brian James left and pretty much sucked through 1980s onwards. The only reason people in certain circles pretend to like crap like Stawberries, is because Dave Vanian wears black clothes and make-up. Fact.
Strange1334 3 years ago
I kind of like that power-pop esque material produced on "Phantasmagoria" and all the other albums.
Lobotomyu 3 years ago
Most punk bands took a page from the Stooges but you're right that the Damned did to a large degree. On Neat Neat "I feel alright" is basically a remake of "1970". I never loved the pistols though, they were kind of like the Monkees of punk rock, put together by Malcolm McClarren. To this day I still don't own any pistols records.

sex pistols r the britney spears of punk
and comparing sdc to them is a tribute to how ignorant u are
so shush
xxDisintergrationxx 3 years ago 6
First of all I'd appreciate it if you typed properly, secondly on what basis do you have the right to call the sex pistols ''the britney spears of punk''?. Very early Gothic music was born out of the early 70s punk boom and Ian Astbury will gladly admit that SDC in essence was highly influenced by acts such as the Sex Pistols.
Dungarth 3 years ago 2
How edgy of you. The Pistols were better than the knuckledragger, so-called punk of the 80s.
77 punk and post-punk are the only styles associated with that movement that matter.
Strange1334 3 years ago
The suck pistols are stupid,The damned is so much better.

Stop trying to be funny, I'm 27 years old and from London, I was raised on John Lydon, I assume you are no more than 14 by that completely childish & inane statement.
Dungarth 3 years ago 3
I will answer your question. My evidence that the Sex Pistols were the Britney Spears of punk are
1) They fact they were outfitted and recruited in a "punk fashion" shop by Vivienne Westwood.
2) Sid Vicious not even playing and being a retarded dick but being kept in because he had "the image".
I could go on, but yeah...
John Lydon was the only member worth anything in that train wreck... too bad he had to be in such a failure of a punk band.

This music sounds awful compared to the stuff they played in later years in the mid 1980s as The Cult. By the way like most early gothic bands they emerged from the ashes of the first wave of punk, with some members having been in Bradford punk band Violation.
