not standing up for Korea's treatment of biracial people or Hines Ward, but the reporter needs to get the facts right. Presence of US military obviously encouraged prostitution and red light districts(not that there wasn't any before) but the girls working as one were obviously less educated and less well off. Hence an offspring would tend to be so as well esp after the man left them and also comes a stigma that the mother was a hooker and father a US solider. Not because they were bi-racial.
@jinu4ever That may be true in some cases but I wouldn't generalize the entire group. You also need facts to back up your claim but I doubt any prostitution records like that exist.

@shanahanfan24 what ward are you watching????? he beat stallworth and swann two hall of famers from the steelers in alll stats that doesent scream suck to me
Im Chinese and married to a Korean man and my husband's family will often tell him how a Korean man should marry a Korean woman, I can only imagine everything Hines and his mother must have been through
@femaleasian1 - what fact? my parents accept my husband with no issue, never said to me that korean men are no good, in fact, my parents already tell me most important is the person loves you and you love the person. sure some chinese family may be like that but definitely not as bad as korean, its pretty well known
I'm Chinese too so I know all about Chinese society. It's WORSE than Korean society. Chinese respect Koreans because of their economic success in such a short time. Now that China is becoming economically strong, Koreans are starting to respect us as well. But, Chinese want their children to marry other Chinese and are racist towards other people.
@femaleasian1 - well then i guess im truly blessed or my chinese friends are truly blessed, i have no trouble dating guys of different races, so as my friends.
i have korean friends told me their parents would even threaten them that they would kill themselves if their kids would date black, thats emotional blackmailing
Do you have inferiority complex towards Koreans?? I know so many Chinese parents who said the same thing. As a matter of fact, I know many white parents who said the same thing. Why are you just scapegoating Koreans? Don't vent your frustration out on them just because your husband's family is mistreating you. Maybe it's YOU, not Chinese identity.
@femaleasian1 no, but this video is about Hines Ward as half korean and half black who had been so badly discriminated by the korean, hence, this dicussion. you are the ONE bringing Chinese is so bad and that, my very first comment never even compared Chinese and Korean. Im married to Korean, you and I perhaps have different experience, im sorry that you or ur friends Chinese parents were racist but so happened i have awesome parents who dont judge people becos of their races.
well, u want an example of the korean racist, watch above video, apparently not just my husband's parents, apparently Hines Ward experiences quite a bit, so much so that he felt the need to set up a charity and education program in korea to change that, i dont care its korean, or chinese or white, racial discrimination is wrong, plain simple. and you're completely missing the point
Oh, I'm missing the point because it's you that is causing problems in your household. How mature of you. It's the Chinese that is the racist. We all know that. WIth blacks, it's Japan. Learn to be nice and maybe your husband's family will be nice to you as well.
Part 2. I just looked at your profile and you're from Hong Kong. Not mainland China. Now I see why. Even Chinese look down on you people. Hong Kong people are short, dark skinned with big flat noses. If I was a guy, then hell, my relatives would look down on you as well. LOL
@femaleasian1 - ha, acutally im not from hong kong, so happened when i set up the account in hong kong, i have lived in 7 countries cos of my job, now i live in the US. anyway, just i dont agree with you, you resolve to personal attack, have a nice day, said that you have a bunch of chinese racist people around you cos you're one of them thats why you attract the same people. lol
hey Catgismo, just ignore femaleasian1, she sounds like nothing but a sad loser, I bet no one would marry her, like she said, she has a family who are racist! Don't bother with the jerk.
@femaleasian1 - You are an idiot. There is nothing wrong with being short, dark skinned or having a flat nose. I've seen absolutely beautiful people with all of these traits as well as other traits. You are trained to believe something is beautiful or ugly. But, I don't need to see you to know you are UGLY. There is something wrong with someone who needs to put down other people to feel better about themselves. It's a sign of insecurity.
You are a retarded moron. Light skinned, big eyes, small nose and full lips are an universal standard of beauty. Which I, my dear, have all those traits. So you can kiss my light-skinned, rounded, firm ass with your dark skinned, flat nosed, wrinkley lips.
@femaleasian1 - When did you get your eyelid surgery? I don't need anyone else's "universal standard of beauty" to tell me what is beautiful. I hope every child grows up with parents who tell them they are beautiful and only need that to build up their self-esteem about their beauty. You clearly are dealing with some self-esteem problems if you can only see your own beauty by the definition of anyone other than yourself. I'm sorry for you. You are ugly. It doesn't matter what you look like.
@femaleasian1 - By the way, I don't need to have certain traits to defend those who have those traits. It takes an ugly soul to try to make someone feel bad about themselves. You are lacking in something. Fix it instead of focusing on something you had absolutely nothing to do with, like how you look.
im sure Chinese may be the same but definitely not as bad, i have tons of Chinese friends marry to other races with no issues and i know a lot of the korean girlfriends of mine wanna date white or other races but too scared to do so cos of their parents. my point isnt about chinese or korean, i was trying to say when korean have troubles to even accept other asians, think about Hines Ward's case, it will be 100 times harder on him and his mom
All this is a great thing but if he can do all this for his moms side of the family why cant he be apart of his father's side of the family. He may have issues, everybody does. I know some of his family that are black He has many young cousins and nephews that watch him like the rest of the world who dont understand why Hines dosent care to be apart of their lives as well. He's wrong for that. I like Hines but I feel he has dropped the ball when it comes to loving ALL of his family.
im half black half filipino nobody really gave a fuck bout dat where im from maybe cuz i look like a light skinned black man with a few caucasian features but in the phillipines they hella ignorant misinformed and some maybe dumb
1970's? Korea was only 30 years removed from Japanese oppression when he was born. What do you expect? I deal with racism everyday. How come I don't get a story?
Hey Hines, I'm Mexican, Mexican Indian, Japanese, White, American Indian-Cherokee, Irish, English, and the rest I don't even KNOW! Haha, try to be that in an all White school-kids be clueless! And in an all white neighborhood, too. Now that was hard.
This was the 10th time me seeing this, and I ball like a baby! I didn't know he went through some of the same things. Props to the guy. He did good for himself and helping other kids in the situation he had to go through, now that's heart!<3 <3 <3
STFU. You cower to what other people have brainwashed into you. Typical, meek Asians. Let me educate you. Koreans discriminate these hapas because his parents are low lives. Understand? Mother was either a prostitute giving blow jobs to American military or a poor, uneducated woman who is a reject by Korean men. The father is probably a high school grad from a poor, blue collar family. Who the fuck are you to condemn the whole nation? Who died and made you a representative of Korea?
@jlee7351 Not just Korea. The same thing happened over here in England and in Europe in the fifties and sixties to white woman who had children with black men. The children and women were outcasts even if they woman were happily married to the men
@MrMerajjio a lot of places are like this. White people are actually looked upon with wonder in south korea, as I visited there to see family, and i was eating with my cousin, he saw a white guy and he wouldn't stop talking about it. But yeah, i'm korean, and its a really closed culture there.
Yeah, I've been to S. Korea twice now and I couldn't help but feel it's a very bleak and uniform society. It's so different from Canada and Canadian attitudes that you realize how different some parts of the world are.
@MrMerajjio It depends where you live, but sure... Korea can be pretty closed minded. But let's not forget other countries are just as bad if not worse in other ways.
This has nothing to do with being pure blooded but has more to do with the fact that women who had children with American soldiers were looked down upon as being loose women for obvious reasons. To be fair Korean women who dated or married American soldiers back then were women who were likely down on their luck and marginalized in Korean society due to poverty, sad home situations, etc..
Odd how nobody is claiming that the way to "end racism" in Korea is to flood them with tens of millions of non Koreans and have them to assimilate with them?
I sat here watching this video crying like a baby because I never knew one of my personal heroes went through something like this. As a Korean myself growing up in MN I received so much racism for being asian and on the flip side to that the korean ppl (and too this day) looked down on me because I didn't look or act like a normal korean. Like Hines I'm proud to be korean but more then anything I'm DAMN PROUD call myself an American!
Not knocking her for her international efforts, but we Americans can't even get the whole discrimination issue resolved here, much less around the world
this broadcast was terrible why are they saying pure blood? wtf does it mean nobody on this earth is a pure blood anything and this rascism smuck gets on my nerves we are all one race the HUMAN race
@EbonyDollable uhh listen cheif all they're saying is that korean society highly values being 100% korean, and that it makes life difficult for biracial children like hines.. they aren't supporting that viewpoint.
I didn't know he was mixed until a couple of years ago. All black kids tease each other for various reasons, but we don't disown people that are mixed, nor do we spit on them or call them names (adults I mean).
This seams like the new thing - mixed people say that they were rejected by the both sides. Since slavery it's always been better to be mixed than to just be black. Every mixed person I knew growing up got mad play from black men and women.
HE COLD 2 ME BUT HE ALWAYS COMPLAINING ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE DA NFL DONT CARE ABOUT ABOUT THE SAFETY FOR EX. HELMET 2 HELMET FINE RIGHT RIGHT I PLAY LITTLE LEAUGUE FOOTBALL AND I DONT KNOW ANY 1 DAT COMPLAIN LIKKE HE DO IM NOT HATING BUT HE JUS COMPLAIN A LIL 2MUCH 4 ME
@coolfreaks911, LOL of course he looks Filipino. Many Filipino people are a mixture of Asian and African. The natives of their Islands (in the provinces) are of African descent (Do a google image search to see what I mean).
Not sure about others, but from what I've seen growing up as a child to now, it's changed from racial discrimination (color of skin) to more of a cultural segregation (i.e. based on the type of music you listen to, the types of clothes you wear, etc.)
People know Hines Ward as such a dirty player... You see this and you wonder if people even know anything about him. He plays his heart out, you should respect that! He is one of my favorite NFL players...
He was only accepted and embraced in Korea when he became a celebrity. I shudder to think how the visit would have gone if he had returned an "average" biracial man with no big accomplishments. When you travel around the world, you start to understand that America has less trouble with color and race than many countries, even with our slavery past.
With that said, i do think it was important for him to go back and show the other biracial kids there that they can be somebody and be proud.
I hate the Steelers, but Hines is a great player and is a great inspiration to those who suffer thru identity crisis thru multicultural parents. Great story.
I need to set the record straight. These bi-racial kids are discriminated because of the quality of their parents. The women that have sex with American GI's are usually prostitutes and/or uneducated from poor families. They were already ostracized by the Korean society. Let's face it, even in America, military people are looked down on as blue-collar losers who can't get a job. That's why these bi-racial kids are being discriminated. Understand?
You need to get with the time. In the past, yes. But which country hasn't? Even amongst dark skins, darker skins get discriminated. Roll the time forward, and you will see Koreans find tanned skin masculine and desirable on Korean men.
I think Asian media might try to portray tanned skin looks tough. That's probably why tanned skin is shown on Asian men and not women. Light skin portrays pure, clean image. Why make a big deal? That's how it is everywhere in the world.
@woyay Kids formed cliques. Cliques had members and membership could have been based on race or gender. He was not included in the black clique because he was different. He was not included in the white clique because he was different. He was not included in the asian clique cause he was different.
@woyay it does make sense since 90% of blacks are monoracial. basically overwelmingly black. people like you always use the vague word "mixed" as if it applies to biracial the same way. 99% of blacks will never look like this guy.
ain't it that how most posts sound like ?.A lot of black ppl use it as a ploy to prevent the biracial individual from claiming his other side.they are not even creative anymore.the same old "well you don't look mixed", my grand dad was much lighter. My auntie can pass as white.those are black ppl's favourite lines when they want to cancel the biracial experience.I forgot the good old "damn! your black daddy has strong genes"
@cannoir Trust me, it's not black people that say you're black. In fact, it's the white infrastructure in America that says you are black if you're half black and half something else. President Obama is not seen as the first biracial president of the US. He's seen as the first African-American president of the US. That wasn't black people doing. That was the white infrastructure's doing.
@cannoir Indeed, there are some black people that have animosity reserved for biracial people. It's not right, and it's unwarranted, but there is history behind it. Have you ever heard of the gens de colour of Lousiana? Have you ever heard of the brown paper bag test and the Blue Vein Society. These were ligth skinned/or even biracial blacks that discriminated against dark skinned blacks simply because they were dark skinned. I'm not saying that light skinned blacks deserve ill-treatment.
@woyay Afteer reading what you said i was first motivated to say something stupid but i wont..being someone whos mixed white black you suffer as a child when sourounded by "black" people because they feel as though by being light skinned your more accpeted by whites than darker skinned african americans.Sucks but i learned to deal with it.
I agree racism exists everywhere, however, I do not believe a black family would alienate one of their own or be ashamed of an innocent child just because he/she was biracial.
I'm also biracial (white/Afro), my grandparents and entire extended family treated us all the same. I have a cousin (white) who is my aunts step-son, my family goes to extra lengths to make sure we looked after him since it was hard at the time when he was only 5yrs old.
Hi, I am a proud Korean who was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea for 13 years now residing in city near by Seattle since 2002. Just like that lady said, we are STRONGLY united nation because of countless invasion from China and Japan. But that does not mean we have to be racist. But nowdays, it got a lot better. I went to Korea last december and I saw a lot more foreigners residing in our city which was rare at the time I was living there. I actually went to one of the restaurant where
@Stevek1m23 Hines Ward dined and left incentives such as Signed jersey and diagrams. Also, people who are racist in Korea are mostly older generation people who've suffered those invasions. People in our generation are constantly out of country traveling, getting educations, and adapting new cultures which makes me to believe racism in our country will be gone soon. Although I maybe a Seahawks fan, I have tons of love for Hines Ward.
@tanio12 I saw more white folks than black folks. I will visit Korea again this August so I shall see if demographics changed or not... But I did not get your follow up question talking about actors. Feel free to get at me though.
Every country has had their fair share of racial discrimination. Korea does not compare to America. Koreans have tourist from all over the world and they are very welcoming people
It pretty much shows you racism is fake.See how they treated him once he had all that money & success. They treated him like on of their own.I'm Black, and I guarantee I could go to the most racist, redneck infested trailor park right now with a million dollars in my pocket & hand it out...See how well they would treat me.FUCK RACISM
Wrong: their rascism is real. It is their supposed no found love for him which is fake, as they are only concerned with the supposed positive exposure it brings to Korea (even though it is probably his black side which made his fame in football possible in the first place).
A knew a half Chinese & half Italian and he felt very unwanted even at 25 yrs old. He was very nice but he had a side that was scary because he was quick to anger from all the teasing he suffered through growing up. Stories like this make me think a hundred times over about having a biracial child. Even though I come from a mixed background I didn't go through this because we were raised as black. Although I did get teased for being lighter but it was just teasing and I didnt take it seriously.
You know it's funny that when he was young, black people made his miserable, Korean people made him miserable. Now that he's successful people want to claim him.
Dang...why are there so many haters in here?? There's like four different arguments going on that have deviated so much from the subject of this video.
All I have to say is that Hines Ward is an inspiration to me and a great man. I wish him the best, and I think a lot of people can learn a lot from his life story.
I like Hines Ward but the only reason they are accepting of him now is because he's a Superbowl champion football celebrity. If he wasn't they still would not like his Black ass.

@femaleasian1 no, but this video is about Hines Ward as half korean and half black who had been so badly discriminated by the korean, hence, this dicussion. you are the ONE bringing Chinese is so bad and that, my very first comment never even compared Chinese and Korean. Im married to Korean, you and I perhaps have different experience, im sorry that you or ur friends Chinese parents were racist but so happened i have awesome parents who dont judge people becos of their races.
catgismo 9 months ago
well, u want an example of the korean racist, watch above video, apparently not just my husband's parents, apparently Hines Ward experiences quite a bit, so much so that he felt the need to set up a charity and education program in korea to change that, i dont care its korean, or chinese or white, racial discrimination is wrong, plain simple. and you're completely missing the point
catgismo 9 months ago
@catgismo
Oh, I'm missing the point because it's you that is causing problems in your household. How mature of you. It's the Chinese that is the racist. We all know that. WIth blacks, it's Japan. Learn to be nice and maybe your husband's family will be nice to you as well.

femaleasian1 9 months ago
@femaleasian1 - ha, acutally im not from hong kong, so happened when i set up the account in hong kong, i have lived in 7 countries cos of my job, now i live in the US. anyway, just i dont agree with you, you resolve to personal attack, have a nice day, said that you have a bunch of chinese racist people around you cos you're one of them thats why you attract the same people. lol

hey Catgismo, just ignore femaleasian1, she sounds like nothing but a sad loser, I bet no one would marry her, like she said, she has a family who are racist! Don't bother with the jerk.
houdini765 9 months ago
@femaleasian1 - You are an idiot. There is nothing wrong with being short, dark skinned or having a flat nose. I've seen absolutely beautiful people with all of these traits as well as other traits. You are trained to believe something is beautiful or ugly. But, I don't need to see you to know you are UGLY. There is something wrong with someone who needs to put down other people to feel better about themselves. It's a sign of insecurity.
lovingit1000 8 months ago
@lovingit1000
You are a retarded moron. Light skinned, big eyes, small nose and full lips are an universal standard of beauty. Which I, my dear, have all those traits. So you can kiss my light-skinned, rounded, firm ass with your dark skinned, flat nosed, wrinkley lips.
femaleasian1 8 months ago

Fix it instead of focusing on something you had absolutely nothing to do with, like how you look.
lovingit1000 8 months ago
im sure Chinese may be the same but definitely not as bad, i have tons of Chinese friends marry to other races with no issues and i know a lot of the korean girlfriends of mine wanna date white or other races but too scared to do so cos of their parents. my point isnt about chinese or korean, i was trying to say when korean have troubles to even accept other asians, think about Hines Ward's case, it will be 100 times harder on him and his mom
catgismo 9 months ago
All this is a great thing but if he can do all this for his moms side of the family why cant he be apart of his father's side of the family. He may have issues, everybody does. I know some of his family that are black He has many young cousins and nephews that watch him like the rest of the world who dont understand why Hines dosent care to be apart of their lives as well. He's wrong for that. I like Hines but I feel he has dropped the ball when it comes to loving ALL of his family.

richterscale09 1 year ago
This has nothing to do with being pure blooded but has more to do with the fact that women who had children with American soldiers were looked down upon as being loose women for obvious reasons. To be fair Korean women who dated or married American soldiers back then were women who were likely down on their luck and marginalized in Korean society due to poverty, sad home situations, etc..
melonbarmonster 1 year ago
Odd how nobody is claiming that the way to "end racism" in Korea is to flood them with tens of millions of non Koreans and have them to assimilate with them?
InternationalRabbit 1 year ago
I sat here watching this video crying like a baby because I never knew one of my personal heroes went through something like this. As a Korean myself growing up in MN I received so much racism for being asian and on the flip side to that the korean ppl (and too this day) looked down on me because I didn't look or act like a normal korean. Like Hines I'm proud to be korean but more then anything I'm DAMN PROUD call myself an American!

Not sure about others, but from what I've seen growing up as a child to now, it's changed from racial discrimination (color of skin) to more of a cultural segregation (i.e. based on the type of music you listen to, the types of clothes you wear, etc.)

Understand?
petiteasiahoney 1 year ago
@petiteasiahoney Not exactly. Koreans also view dark skin negatively.
selty 1 year ago
@selty
You need to get with the time. In the past, yes. But which country hasn't? Even amongst dark skins, darker skins get discriminated. Roll the time forward, and you will see Koreans find tanned skin masculine and desirable on Korean men.
petiteasiahoney 1 year ago
@petiteasiahoney What about women? Double standards.
selty 1 year ago

I think Asian media might try to portray tanned skin looks tough. That's probably why tanned skin is shown on Asian men and not women. Light skin portrays pure, clean image. Why make a big deal? That's how it is everywhere in the world.

Thedarksecret1 1 year ago
ain't it that how most posts sound like ?.A lot of black ppl use it as a ploy to prevent the biracial individual from claiming his other side.they are not even creative anymore.the same old "well you don't look mixed", my grand dad was much lighter. My auntie can pass as white.those are black ppl's favourite lines when they want to cancel the biracial experience.I forgot the good old "damn! your black daddy has strong genes"
cannoir 1 year ago
@cannoir Trust me, it's not black people that say you're black. In fact, it's the white infrastructure in America that says you are black if you're half black and half something else. President Obama is not seen as the first biracial president of the US. He's seen as the first African-American president of the US. That wasn't black people doing. That was the white infrastructure's doing.
Thedarksecret1 1 year ago
@cannoir Indeed, there are some black people that have animosity reserved for biracial people. It's not right, and it's unwarranted, but there is history behind it. Have you ever heard of the gens de colour of Lousiana? Have you ever heard of the brown paper bag test and the Blue Vein Society. These were ligth skinned/or even biracial blacks that discriminated against dark skinned blacks simply because they were dark skinned. I'm not saying that light skinned blacks deserve ill-treatment.

Stevek1m23 1 year ago
@Stevek1m23 Hines Ward dined and left incentives such as Signed jersey and diagrams. Also, people who are racist in Korea are mostly older generation people who've suffered those invasions. People in our generation are constantly out of country traveling, getting educations, and adapting new cultures which makes me to believe racism in our country will be gone soon. Although I maybe a Seahawks fan, I have tons of love for Hines Ward.
