Caves are as much a beautiful part of your world as is any building, town, park, or whatever it is that you may construct. Having all the torches on one side of the cave is instantly noticeable and makes you look "all business", where as switching sides as often as possible and spacing them out creates a very charming, and more realistic spelunking experience. If you have trouble with caves, you should build something fitting like a bridge or staircase to work as a reference point.

You can also get unlimited coloured wool by using 2 units on 2 different sheep, then breeding them using wheat. The offspring will always be whatever colour they were dyed. So long as you keep them fenced in (Mobs don't seem to despawn in later versions of the game) you can theoretically do this forever.

Super tip: You can cut a tree on the middle without getting tree fall :)

i accidently found out the quick select back when i bought the game in feburary when it was in beta 1.2 ive been using it since and it does make it a lot easier and faster than using the scroll wheel/numbers on the keyboard if the item is in your 'hot bar' thingy. But i do use a combination of the three most of the time and onnly really use the quick select when crossing a gap/expanse with dirt or cobble or something like that

For the north direction, you might as well create your own texture or use someone's texture, and choose a block for this texture that nobody will use... Like a clay block...

Just draw a tiny indicator on it indicating north, so it still looks like a clay block, but with a indicator on it...

Heck you don't need that if someone can mod a compass in to measure north.

Shift + Left or Right clicking a crafting results in faster items to grab but it's automatically thrown into your inventory.

This is for those high capacity items you get if your getting 4 times more items from using a single source of item (64 + 64 wood planks to make 4x more wooden sticks, for ladders and fences).
