First heard this song when I worked in a stock camp on Wave Hill stn, NT, in the early 60's. When I came back into town, Darwin, I found the record, 33rpm, in Woollies and bought it. They are just about all the songs I have heard Connie sing. Brings back great memories.
I Love to Hear Connie Sing, and She is just as Sweet in Person, My Late Husband ( Dale Wagner ) Was Her Steel Player for 2 Year's, and I Have so Many Pix's Of the Shows, Even the One's of Her Marriage, Dale was in the Wedding Party. So Many Memiores....So much Fun...Lady She Was and Lady She Still Is....God Bless You, Connie Smith.
@BearStar1 My first sentence in my original post: "I've never been a country fan". Not a criticism, just a fact. All I said was that I had discovered all of these 50s and 60s artists on YouTube and had never heard of them prior to that. And that I thought that Connie Smith was as good as all the women singers I mentioned so I was surprised I hadn't heard of her. Why does everybody get so freaked out about YouTube posts and start TYPING INSULTS IN CAPITAL LETTERS?!?!?! Dumb.
The reason that I type in capital letters is get my point across ! Not Shouting ! Sorry that I mis-understoood your previous statements or remarks. I aplogize if I have offended you in any way. It's just my sarcastic dry humor that comes out sometimes. And by the way, as great and as amazing as Connie's voice is, NO ONE can ever come close to the late Great Patsy Cline. Only 2 other female performers are close to sounding like Patsy. And that's Leann Ryhmes and Mandy Barnett .
I've never been a country fan, other than the obvious biggies -- Cash, Hank Williams etc. -- especially because country seems to get worse as the years go by. But I love all this stuff from the fifties and sixties on You Tube. What I don't understand is, why are Patsy Cline, June Carter, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton household names while I've never even heard of Connie Smith prior to right now? She's fantastic!
What planet did you come from? She's married to Marty Stuart, the former son-in-a-law of the late great Johnny Cash. Marty first met Connie Smith when he was only 12 years old and playing bluegrass in the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Band and Connie was a Nashville Grand Ol Opry Star & performer at the age of 24. Marty told her that he was going to marry her someday, and he did ! Connie had a string of BIG hits during the mid to late 60's and early 70's . She still performs as does Marty.
Wonderfull i'am gonna make a trip to the vs with my girlfrind route 66 nashville and all graceland .i live in holland i love it al lot gives a shiver dowm my spine she is beautifull &good voice as well thanx for posting greetings Tony
I tend to agree somewhat with Dolly Parton... she said "There are only 3 women who can really sing--Barbara Streisand, Linda Rondstadt and Connie Smith. The rest of us are just pretending." I don't know about Babs cause I'm not much of a fan of hers but Connie Smith is definately head and shoulders above the rest. Her vocal abilities are amazing!! Not that Patsy or Loretta or the rest aren't great. They are truly legends. But so is Connie.
As previously mentioned Johnny's 'Cry Cry Cry' is a different song, and it was this version that Loretta Lynn covered, not the version Smith sings here. Connie Smith's version was penned by Shirley Wood and reached number 20 in the country charts, whilst Cash's 'Cry Cry Cry' was his debut single and peaked at 14.
Great videos ALLEN, love Connie Smith. It's a shame she never quite believed in her own potential. I'm gonna go out on a limb, and say she sings better than Patsy.
Johnny Cash's song Cry Cry Cry was a different song. His went "when everyone's forgotten and your left all alone your gonna Cry Cry Cry..." Unless he recorded this song too and I wasn't aware.
You're right, ol' Johnny never cut this song. His 'Cry, Cry, Cry' was self-penned in 1955 and the flip side of his first single. No other artist has had a major hit with it.
If Connie had pursued her career seriously, she could have been greater than Patsy Cline, Loretta, Tammy, or any of them. She can outsing all of them hands down. She decided, however, that raising her children was more important than her career, and I think she is still glad about the decision she made.
@ALLEN0955 you know all of those horses in the westerns are deaf. cowboys would chase other cowboys & shoot their revolvers rite over the horses ears. they gotta be deaf.
