I agree with all the comments about how wonderful this song is. My question is: What the heck is up with the last 2 seconds of this video where it looks like some girl is about to remove her t-shirt, and some creep is peeping??? (pause at 6:22) That image could certainly be edited out...
This song remember my childhood in Brazil. I lived in northest region and this song played so much in some FM radio stations. In that time, I no speak anything about english, but the song touched me so, maybe because the presence of "triângulo", the instrument backs...
In my opinion, this song is able to enter in any soul. Anyone who feels missing of Wolrd better, pleasure people, lovely human. By the way, the massage inside the song too is nice, but the trust objetive this letter isn´t to talk about alone boy, however, about the missing of human´s feelings. Let dowm their parents, sons, daughters, mathes, fathers, friends, pests, owners theirs, All, to have money, status, sucess, therefore, soul, alive, this not iportant for them, unfortunalyti.
On the strength of loving Gabriel's "So" album, and this song in particular, I bought a copy of Anne Sexton's collected poems, but I can't really get into her stuff.

Full of enthusiasm and love, full od compassion with all beings - this song was my first touch with Peter Gabriel and his music - it was like to find a lost twin. And still it takes...
Con la arena en los pies y mi mirada a punta de poniente desangré el pecho con letras y escuchando esta melodía empecé a adorar la costumbre de estar sola; entonces comprendí en las orilla.... del querer.... que el querer es de todos.
What a beautiful song. I'd never heard it before until yesterday....when I just played it over and over all day. My kind of music, deep and reflective.
The percussion sound on this song are made by a "zabumba" and a metal triangle, traditional brazilian percussion instruments very used on Luiz Gonzaga's "baiao" and on "forro", specially on "xote". Peter Gabriel took this and covered it all with such a beatiful music. The result is this. For the non brazilian people who liked this I sugest watching Zé Ramalho's "Banquete dos Signos". Best brazilian regards...
All of Peter's videos are works of genius.................but this is probably my favorite one...................think it's even better than Sledgehammer.
I listened to this song constantly the week my son was born. Walking round deserted hospital grounds in the middle of the night while my partner was in labour.
A place where people come to get fixed or are told mortality is breathing down their necks or in my son's case; the realisation of a new life, hopefully happy and full of great experiences for a long time to come.
I was 17. My Parents were literally on the brink of divorce. I would ride alone in my car around the mountains of Utah and think of what was to become of me and family. My dad was absent completely from my life at the time. I was terribly afraid, and dreamed of being "in my daddys arms again." I prayed for mercy from the pain of it all.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
In the darkness of my small teenager room... listening to that song, looking at those images... it was like entering a cathedral and letting go of all the heavy loads and trouble i was wearing. Peter, you're a magician for that.
Peter Gabriel is a true artist, both on stage and in his albums. Today's bastardized music lacks the vision and meaning that are so evident in his songs.
what I realize the muscians and groups from back then, they had substance they really strive to make music sound good.. he came from a great group.. genisis... wow, pete gabriel so many hits and phil going in another direction with all the love songs but all in all the talent was amazing
so after time of 24 yrs can now be considered in the top 25 albums of the last century simply, because of its continual freshness in sound and relevance into today/s sound and art
Gabriel named this after Anne Sexton's work "45 Mercy Street" published after her death. She was a "confessional poet" w/bi-polar disorder who committed awful acts when she was alive. She killed herself by locking herself in the garage w/ the car running (not drowning). The father she's on the boat with most likely is god...to forgive her and grant her mercy for the things she did that she could & could not control. She reveals the darkness of her humanity & Gabriel pays tribute 2 that courage
@Jax0427 I love the way this song reflects Anne Sexton's poems, the feelings she wrote about...One of the best tributes ever IMO. Dreaming of mercy-this is what hypersensitive ppl often do, ironically they are ofen the last ones who should...
Everytime I hear this song it makes me cry... i've listened to it since I was about 6, just after my dad had left home. No other song sums up how vulnerable, alone and confused i was feeling. Peter Gabriel I love you <3

@kirra77 so beautifully said. To me, the saddest part of death is that the person we have lost will never have a chance to hear that next beautiful song. Music has been my source of strength and comfort throughout my life. I pray that when my time comes, something will provide a way to pipe in the beautiful music to come!
@pbot2029 , Thank you so much. I was nervous, it was my first road trip 3 weeks after
my 16th birthday. My father went to Vietnam at 18, my mother was on her own at 17. They
let me drive myself on my first road trip to that funeral. After a few hours I felt so scared, so alone and I remembered the comfort that I found in this album. Like a familiar fragrance, this music always takes
@kirra77 that is so touching kira... i am sure many people would identify with your comment - the magic of music is that it can reach you in a way that nothing else can.
A massa é doce.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it...makes me think of being in my fathers arms telling me that it's alright to cry...I barely get to see him..but its a deep song that touches my heart very beautiful and calming.
This song is sad and moving, when you match Anne's life and how it was for her, with the lyrics, music, and even the video. I think Peter did Anne a lot of justice with this and that she would be proud and extremely thankful.
This song I'm pretty sure is about Anne Sexton and the sexual abuse she received at the hands of her father, which I believe she wrote about in her poetry and writings.
NICE.............FOREVER!!!!

Gracias compañero, por el video. 'Mercy Street' es también mi canción favorita de todos los tiempos.

This song makes me cry every time I hear it...makes me think of being in my fathers arms telling me that it's alright to cry...I barely get to see him..but its a deep song that touches my heart very beautiful and calming.

@NMWeatherman If you knew what it was about you wouldn't find it so sensuous or sexual. LOL

What a combination of lyrics, melody and rhythm. Always a surprise to listen to baião (the name of the rhythm) in a song that is not Brazilian.

the artist Fever Ray did a cover of this song recently. i have to say she did this song justice. it's just as dark and deep as this version.

Yes she did. I think the chance for her to fail was huge because this song is just great but, as you said, she did a good job.
