The 409 was cubic inches and I think it rated 425 hp. the main thing is that it had a superior bore to stroke ratio, compared to its Ford and Plymouth rivals, til Plymouth brought out the Hemi.
I remember the 409.I tried to talk my father into getting one! Fat chance!! But I had forgetten what a great song ths is. A really lean, loose, sinewy sound with lots of propulsion - like a 409.
Still won't drive a four door car, or an "SUV." Still drive a stick-shift too, hard to find, but we're just as rare - us oldies from the sixties, and in our sixties.
Dad's favorite. No car like American Muscles. Dad says driving a 409 and feeling his power on the highway is like soaring with the eagles. I love cars too and those 60's to 70´s are my favorites :-)
i miss my 62 390 t-bird with dual exhaust.....i don't miss idiots in the parking lot asking me if it's my husbands...he had a 62 t-bird 325, LAME for a car of that weight......
wow - Butch Leal the California Flash! How about Dyno Don Nicholson, Ronnie Sox, and Roger & The Ramchargers-the Tasca Ford crew, and on L.I. - Lefty's 396 Chevelle ! Detroit iron ruled the world in the 60s.
FORD,CHEVY,MOPAR,AMERICAN MUSCLE MAN !!! For those of us lucky enough to be there watching Fords with Butch Leal,Chevys wit Grumpy Jenkins, and Dick Landy in that screamin Mopar,,man it was the best of times for a car guy.
Over the years i`ve owened over 75 cars of all the big three,,some were good, some were bad,,,but all the American iron has beenfast as hell !!!!
I raced a couple with a Norton Commando, & a tricked out BSA punched out to 725cc. All the guy could see of my BSA was a bubble of blue fire in ea. pipe. No lights at 0200 in the a.m.. I was using 115-145 Av-Gas courtesy of the USN, where I worked on T-28s & S-2s. The truth is I often did'nt beat them except for the first 1/8 -1/4 mile, then it was neck & neck to the end.
i raced a few with my tricked out 66 mustang back in 1973 and beat them. i friend had a 58 with the 348 and another had a biscyne with a 409 and they along with the other chevy guys i knew back then called them rice crispy engines due to the week bottom end. i had a 68 428cj mustang that would wind to 7500 all day long and stay together. for me who built a 392w stroker with oliver stlt 6.2" rods ,bryant racing 3.9"crank ,,je pistons w/1.35" ch, i guess i dont know anything !!!
should' ve ben singgin bout 65-67 musatng !!! giddee up giddee up 289 !!!! 4 speed dual quad posi traction 289 ! yes ford made a dual 4 intake for the 289 ! i had 1 !!
In 300 years nobody will know what a 409 is but if they change the lyrics to relate to meditation...well i saved my pennies and i saved my dimes for Al knew there would be a time when i would buy a brand new maharishi of mine .
@CmGHaures frank zappa gave a commencement address at a music school he said 409 is the only song where the chord progression goes backwards and forwards at the same time
@MrKrazykev13 no its 409 cubic inch dispacement the size of the holes and the pistons in them the horsepower could be more than that a 409 is a big engine bigger than a 327 a 426 bigger still then there was a 427 the stone woods and cook willys had a 426 they stroked it too 460 bigger than anything then

the first car to have the 409 V-8 (and some correct me if I'm wrong) was the 1963 Impala SS.
