Interesting how the mezzo often comes to the fore in this regardless how good the soprano.

This is a wonderful performance by both artistes. On Youtube second only to Miklosa/Wiedemann as far as I can see which for all it's probably deserved criticisms about French pronunciation is nevertheless supremely idyllic and unlikely to ever be bettered.

My only issue with this wonderful Batalles/Withers performance is that the poor old pianist is not named. He could tickle my ivories any time.

to me yes :-) Nothing's absolute. Just conditioning (aka culture) based on reference models. I relate good or better for that matter to another aspect, subjective to each one's own sensitivity. Hearing Galanca + Netrebko together gives me no emotion whatsoever when wiedermann and miklosa generate goosebumps. I was teasing operadiva, and her user id, relating their performance to technicality only and face expression LoL so relevant to music (as any no-diva or no-maestro knows)
