  • some great inforamtion here thanks

  • You could probably swim in it as long as you don't allow yourself to sink too far.

  • Baby nuke... I'd love to have one to power my watt-thirsty PC at home.

  • Hi,

I'm the guy talking in the video. The reactor pool is filled with regular water NOT heavy water. It's just very clean water. There are no steam generators because this little reactor does not produce electricity as do nuclear power reactors. This is a research reactor and is 3000 times smaller than a typical nuclear power reactor. The other comment is that it is safe to observe the reactor through 8 m (30 ft) of water but swimming down to it while it is operating is a very bad idea.

  • one question:

how do you keep the water that circulates from the reactor to the steam generator, from boiling? i read it was kept under pressure. Clearly thats not the case here... i think.

  • It's Beautiful to look at. If I could I would stare at a reactor, touch it and just admire it. But sadly I would come up looking like my mom's cooking,

  • Those reactors in Japan are extremely hot

  • Is it only me or does anybody else see the heat waves?

  • @NFLization

Yes that's thermal convection, a stream of warm water comes up from the core.

  • thats my new pool heater

  • i fell like i want to jump in it like a heated pool. :)

  • @rey4every if you do that you will properly die in seconds

  • @TheHalflife123 well obviously but it looks so inviting, kinda like the idea of swimming trough your house if it were flooded idk mabye thats just me

  • @rey4every ofc pool type reactor looks like swimming pool but i wouldn't jump there to swim :D

  • @rey4every sure if you don't mind the deadly radiation :D

  • id love to know how these particles are produced in the first place..has anyone got a link they can share with me regarding this :)

  • @Fleetfox10 Sure, what kind of particles are you talking about? Do you mean the fission chain reaction process, or the Cerenkov radiation (blue glow)?

  • us should change there common temperatur measurement to celsius and the imperial measurement are annoying too...

  • Uno esperaria algo más de algo así...

  • Is there a problem with radiation due to the fact there's only water containing the core?

  • @Tabby266 No. water Blocks all radiation.

  • @paintballers no, heavy water helps block radiation. hes still getting some, just not enought for concern

  • @Tabby266 water is one of the best kinds of shielding

  • @Tabby266 This is to you and everyone else, the water surrounding the core of a reactor is referred to as "heavy water" which is water that has had the hydrogen atoms replaced with deuterium, making the compound D2O. I don't know much more on it then that, but I do remember my chemistry professor telling us about it. It's not just tap water they're putting over the core.

  • Great film!!

  • dude thats sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cool to see a real nuclear reactor core!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • very cool! and interesting, too.
