  • I got a question about the antenna. I have an ex police car with the holes in the truck, and want to install a CB, can one like the 440 you have work with CBs too?

  • +1 Good job Grant, I can see you've been doing this for a while. I would recommend new installers use the "antenna" hole saw and add in using a pair of needle nose pliers to hold the NMO base in place as you tightened down the nut.

Again, good job, I'm definitely going to look over any other tutorials you may have and perhaps let my new installers watch them as a training tool.

  • Can you make a video showing the radios inside your truck please?

  • You will NEVER be a POV pornstar.

    ever.

  • thanks for sharing this. I will be looking into my first 2m/70cm mobil transceiver rig.

  • do you have a video showing all the final antennas (2m, 440, and cb all nmo)? also would be interested to see what the radios inside look like. thanks!

  • Nice job on the mount . I'm still iffy on drilling a hole on the truck lol . I mount my antennas to the tool box but i have a 5/8 wave 2 meter railroad antenna 160 mhz and a comet 790A antenna on the bed of the ford F-150 . What rigs are you useing ? 73's kj4piu

  • I just purchased a Nice Larsen - Antenna that has an NMO connector, I'm a bit hesitant but you make it look so easy; I just need to figure out how to remove my headliner in my 2003 Corolla. Do you know where I'd go to find that information? Chilton's doesn't cover removing the headliner, they say it's "too complicated" that's why they don't go into servicing the factory broadcast AM/FM antenna in the guide :( KC2YAN

  • good vid son

  • Nice install. At 6:20 I see you have a LIN/TIR 3 on your headache rack. Do you have a video of that setup?

  • I installed many roof mounts during my time as a radio tech.

The one thing that bothers me is you didn't rust-proof the hole.

I ALWAYS sprayed Tectyl in and under the hole, the bare metal is just waiting to get rusty. Tectyl is a thick, waxy spray that dries quickly and is impervious to water.

  • Unibit is a lot easier and cleaner to use...just FYI.

  • The only way to go. I have 2 in my f150. They look clean, good groung plane. The ONLY option as far as I'm concerned.

  • Bravo to you for building up the balls to drill through your truck's roof.

What do plan on doing when you sell the truck? Do you just sell the antennas with it? Or is there a cap you can screw over the mount and keep your antennas?

  • @imvoid

There are caps designed specifically for NMO mounts. They're really easy to install. you just push them in to the hole and you're good.

  • What rig are you running in the truck? Nice install and nice truck!

    From KD0FNZ

  • I had an antenna rack made from diamond plate and aluminum tubing and mounted it behind the cab instead of drilling a hole in the cab of my 2007 Dakota truck.

    SWRs were LOW!

  • Ok install.......Why? You should have used a 3/8" nmo mount!!! Much smaller hole.

  • Thanks for posting this man. You gave me a lil bit more courage in doing the same. Actually I have the materials but the courage. Hahaha. Question though: Do you have to hold the thing with the cable when you tighten the NMO mount? Also where did you get the 2 meter whip? Thanks again man and 73.

  • Good Deal!

I would buy an antenna holesaw. I like it because it is headliner friendly.

    Nice Install,

    John

  • Thanks for the vid. I just got my Tech ticket and have been considering this mount for the trunk of my car. after seeing this I am definately going to get it done. how is your reception with this antenna/

  • Always smear a little petroleum jelly onto the 'O' rings to extend the life of the seal and guarantee moisture protection. Moisture travels two ways, Don't forget!

  • The title should be "Watch Me Struggle To Hold The Camera And Cut Away From The Important Parts Because I Need Two Hands To Actually Do The Work"

  • This would have been a 2 minute video if he had someone hold the DAMN CAMERA!!!

  • most people think your nuts to drill a hole in your truck, but its the best way to go. ive got 2 nmo mounted antennas on my truck and had 3 on my old truck. never the first problem.

  • The NMO mount is a good quality mount and when properly installed, you wont have to worry about water migrating into the vehicle. The best way to drill the hole is with the proper antenna hole saw available from Larson,Maxrad and other mfgs. as the blade will stop at about 1/8" into the metal and that way wont damage the headliner. Also, heres a tip, when finished drilling the hole, use a magnet to pick up the cuttings left over, that way you wont scratch the paint.73,Don VO1XH

  • I like the magnet trick. I'll use it next time I install an antenna. I thought about getting an antenna saw, but I got the antennas in my hand and couldn't wait too install them, so I used the hole saw I already had. I'll probably order one for future use.

  • I've never see who drill a hole on her car to installing a antenna(and least in Chian),but I think this's the best way to installing a mobil-antenna.And I think it's better to using a tripod when you haven't the 3rd hand to holding you camera (*^__^*)

  • Good job. I enjoy seeing the newer hams hop in and drill holes. That's dedication to a hobby!

Where did you get the Motorola branded antennas?

    73

  • Check out the ebay store Precision Communications. I bought both antennas from them. Good prices/service. Glad you enjoyed!

  • Another great video, as always, Grant!

I don't have the courage to drill holes in my roof, but I'm sure other hams will benefit from this. Those mounts are watertight without any sealant, are they?

  • Thanks for the comment. It was very hard for me to drill into my roof, but after the install was done I was pleased with the outcome. I'm sure glad I didn't mess up. The NMO mounts are watertight without any sealant. There's a small o-ring around the bottom of the nut that fits tight against the roof. So far I haven't had any water come through it.

  • very nice antenna

  • Sorry for the shaky video. It I'm not good working with a camera in my hand.
