Zippy is an amazing little woody. This is great info, I have moved from the lake recently and left zippy in charge of a farmer friends pond. I will c if he can add some b3 in some corn mash n leave it out. After the summer cooled off here in florida his feathers seemed to come back a bit and he decreased the scratching. maybe it was the heat here. thanks for responding...
If he's getting crushed corn, you should add some vitamin B3 (niacin) to avoid pellagra, which may cause feathering abnormalities and neurological problems.
A wild female wood duck showed up recently among the many mallards I feed. She kept getting closer, so I just put up a video of her.
Man you have an awesome video, He appears to be hand raised i would bet, most wood ducks dont stick around for more than a few seconds at ANYTHING they dont recognize. "zippy" is a very talkative little man too, in the wild they say that a drake Wood duck only does 1% of all calling done by wood ducks. These ducks dont quack they make that high pitched "sitting call" and "chatter" when they are roosting or on the water. I love Wood ducks, they are gorgeous!!
@twinturbocobra gald you liked it. he was likely, like you said, hand raised probably for a farm hunt n ended up flying off. Was a good pet, had him maybe a year or so then he matured and got more aggressive and was chasing me out the door of the porch n roaming around when he got out so i lead him off to a friends farm pond where i assume he still is. Maybe when he made the dive from the nest he hit a branch on the way down lol. who knows .... Great duck would have made a good mount....

This is astounding! I've never seen a wood duck this close up before!
Have you ever given him duck feed? The little greenish rabbit food looking pellets?

I've never seen a duck so bold around humans. That's amazing!

@panamasipu Wood Ducks are roosting Ducks, they have slightly less webbing on their feet than "puddle Ducks" like Mallards and Teal.
