  • Raw Irish talent

  • Lovely song and musicians !! Phalaïna

  • i love cara dillon so much. its comforting, when im sad i listen to her

  • did her piper crack the 'd'ya not have a boots card?' joke? lol she was amazing at Moseley folk festival.

  • This is beautiful :') Just proves that even teenagers can appreciate real, pure music :)

  • @Becca1996x Indeed it's refreshing. All of us have popular music we enjoy during our youth. As we age we tend to cast that aside like many of the other "trappings of youth". This music can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

  • what a great song, and great singing .... !!

  • beautiful.... luv ye both.. 2 haunting yet beautiful and enticing and engaging voices.. keep it up cara and paul :) x

  • Oul` Hubby Sounds Good On The Ivories There Girl !

What a blessing that the both of you became 1....(sometimes things are right)x

  • Paul Brady and Cara Dillon together?! Beautiful!!! :)

  • beautiful voice, thanks for sharing Allan, hugs Kira x

  • Triona Ni Domhaill / Bothy Band version still rules.

  • Yes she is from dungiven

  • Last time a song about Derry brought me to tears, Luke Kelly sang it. I've just cried my eyes out. Thank you for bringing tears to my eyes and joy to my heart..

  • this performance is so beautiful and gives the song so much depth. It's like a 'Passion', could be about Jesus and Marie Magdalene in a different script..

They sing it as if it is a metaphore for how we all need the love of one special person to free us from earthly burdens, threats and fears.. even if we do not get saved; fortunately this hero does.. 'I'll crown my love with a bunch of greens'' soooo beautiful..

  • I think I'll buy the Transatlantic Sessions 3 DVD as this track is on there (programme four). Hopefully the DVD follows the same format as that shown on BBC4 in that the behind-the-scenes parts are interesting breaks.

  • Thank you BBC four for showing me this <33

  • Good to see all the positive posts about Cara Dillon & Paul Brady's singing. They complement each other nicely...but for me the most beautiful part of this is Sam Lakeman's piano playing. Here's to you Sam, another unsung hero!

  • She is amazing

  • 6 dislikes!? seriously?

Now, I'm not forcing my tastes on anyone, but this video is pretty hard to find, let alone stumble across. How on earth can you hunt it out, then STILL not like it? It's almost perfect.

  • @Getzrules fair play.

  • This has got to be one of the most lovely things I've heard in a long while...

  • If I could ask for an angel to come down and sing for me it might well be Cara and she might sing this song for me. Outstanding and priceless!

  • One word:beautiful. Okay, I will add a few more: The whole who is better debate is quite amusing. Shh, and be thankful these two voices are here to astound us and have joined together to make something wonderful. Peace to my friends North and South.

  • Forgive me if im wrong, but isnt Cara from the Dungiven area of County Derry

  • Does anyone know where Cara Dillon comes from and has she got a sister who's unattached?

    ;-)

  • oh look a racist.. go die. and take the 'irish' off your name.

  • I just love this. Paul Brady's voice doesn't have the purity or control of Cara's but it's still beuatiful (especially the bit where he vocalises the tune). Outstanding collaboration!!!

  • @Cotictimmy You've got to remember Paul doesn't have the same voice as he used to. As for Paul not having a controlled voice? Have a look at his version of 'Lakes of Pontchartrain' in the 70s. Ornamentation to a 'T'!

  • Im from Derry Me sel' just making me homesick all the same......Merry christmas to all xoxo

  • This performance is so moving, I love it!

  • The senior and magisterial Paul Brady and the fresh young voice of Cara Dillon singing in unison - magic.

For a visual bonus there are glimpses of the so-pretty harpist, Catriona MacKay.

  • Love the way she sings the word ,

    "tree".

  • First heard Paul Brady sing this with Andy Irvine at the Ballisodare Festival in 1977(78 ?) .While Andy is very talented Cara wins on looks and voice.Great post

  • This song and many other Irish songs touch my soul.

  • Every Single Day i listen to this.

    One Word , Amazing!

  • Can't believe she's married...

  • listen to the andy irvine version. that is the one.

  • Went to see Cara Dillon last night in Armagh.

Amazing, seriously unbelievable. Her Pianist is unreal. She's very witty as well. It was a great show.

  • Agree - seen her live too.

Her pianist is her husband - Sam Lakeman.

  • @tomtscotland husband? Damn ;-) She's truly one of the best voices, I've ever listened to... I simply <3 the soft tones... The constellation of Cara, Sam and Paul couldn'e be better...! Cheers from Aberdeen

  • Anybody who was fortunate enough to hear Al O Donnell sing this song will never bother listening to any attempt by anybody else to sing it

  • No offense to the male Paul Brady, but I would love to hear this with a younger male vocalist and the same female vocalist

  • Ye messin'???? Yer man Brady is a genius, and provides the perfect structure for the bird to sing as well as she does

  • @JosephEaorle Sorry, but I can't imagine anyone sounding better with Cara Dillon than Paul Brady. The two together are just magical.

  • Beautiful song. Could Cara Dillon be the world's best Female vocalist? This is raw natural talent, not remixed techno-fuzz.

  • Cara and her sister have got to have the most beautiful voices in the world. And to see Paul Brady -- this is beautiful. I'm from the United States, and this music calls out to my soul. Thank you.

  • It's a plessure to hear that from a person over the sea's.

  • It is MY pleasure ... to listen to Cara and Paul. :)

  • That song and the way it is sung makes the hairs stand up on the back of neck everytime

  • Oh Lord. Go back to school so they can teach you how to spell, and stop embarassing the rest of us Irish. Just enjoy the song for what it is or piss off.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself AranGalactico!

  • Agreed

  • im a derry man living in germany and i have all of cara´s cds and all the german´s ask me who she is and what she is singing about and i have to translate what she´s singing about and im very proud to translate that she is from my town in ireland

ich bin so stolz das ihre stimme kommet aus irland

  • Refreshing. Thank you.

  • Just came back after months...I should cherish this...it breaks my heart...so perfect...one of the only songs to bring a tear and they do it so well.

  • The people that are having that deep conversation here: what are you arguing for?? Each one of you is going to end up thinking the same exact thing that is "defending" now and will be pissed off as well... but if you want to ok, why don't you argue by msn?? because arguing in Youtube is less pathetic?? Let the music be

  • Very well said, youtube seems to have become the battleground for argumentative, bitter "know-it-alls". The comments section for videos like this should be used solely to discuss the music and the artists. You made a great point, and it seems to have gotten through too!! :)

  • Ah to be sure, to be sure. Solid.

  • Ever since Ireland invaded England, there's been nothing but trouble over there LOL

  • Children; please. This is music not bloody politics. Get off this download!!!

  • Well said old boy.

  • @TRADTOONS thanks to have said it even when i listen to it i just bloody feel like a small child...i wd like politics not to hurt and spoil our kids,i don t know if it s possible, they choose their own way lad,but thxs really fr ur comment so sadly true

  • you have to remember that people who are in the IRA did not join because they liked violence or killing people, the young men who joined had no choice their people were being slaughtered in the streets by british paramiliteries everyday and they choose to fight back and rightly so. cara dillion in from county derry

  • A brilliant performance. According to Lorcan, Cara's Irish you know. I never would have clocked that.

  • lorcan ur a hero!!

  • anyone know where I can get the sheet music for the piano for this song?

  • another great irish singer

  • i'm so happy, I can hear cara dillon this year in august in nuremberg (Germany)

  • Incredible song from two fantastic singers.

Could listen to Cara's voice every day of the week and twice on a Sunday.

Just wish she would get her ass to Scotland soon or even Donegal!

  • am going to north ireland and looking for tour information on the internet.

    surprisingly saw this vedio.

the music is good and so are the singers and players.

enjoy the vedio very much, thank you for sharing!

  • anyone here to enjoy the music?

    No?

just me then. Oh, and mimiburnsband. Good onya.

Stuff like this outruns superlatives. Sublime.

  • She reminds me of Olivia Newton John~ really lovely singer~

  • Why are u arguing on the page of such a beautiful song? What does it matter anyway? Argue football on a football page. Argue politics on a politics page. I personally think this is a beautiful song sung by beautiful voices. I love the two of them separately but together they seem perfection. Listening to it makes me smile.

  • 26+6 = 1 ireland

  • Terrific!

  • Please do not take from a fantastic song and version of it. This is a debate for elsewhere, Enjoy the music and sentiment, wherever you come from!

  • I d like to back 300 years when there was no trouble or violence , a land of peace and unity, Then the imperial british planters came

  • A Think Her Voice Is Excellent And The Songs All Have A Meanin

  • evrything that comes from ireland is romantic beutyful or sad

  • aye........cara is amazing!!

  • Damn, that scores my heart in two...I've posted before but everytime I hear the song I'm stunned, the tune and lyrics...it's a classic...thanks, Briar Niall

  • ...the reply below is for H1zchan.

  • she is a real heartbreaker all right; i'm in love:-)

  • Too bad she's taken!

  • Well now I guess i'll set me sights on Amy McDonald!lol

  • High treason to the Crown! Very popular!

  • wonders for what reason the lover in the song was to be hung. was hanging a very common sentence back in those days in derry?

  • stealin a loaf....and being catholic

  • Thank you! I have been searching fo this song...in the mist and memory, Cara & Paul do it so beautifully, my throat hurts and my eyes are wet..

  • Cara has one of the most beautiful voices in all of music. She's gorgeous, her albums are works of art......its unfortunate the US music market hasn't taken notice.

Big props to Paul Brady too - a living legend.

  • Being one of those Yanks who "discovered" Cara via TAS-3, and fell in love with that voice, I agree.

The good news is that so many can be introduced to her work here, and spread the word.

  • Goosebumps everytime!

  • that is amazin!!!

  • Thats Wah I Call Music By A Derry Person . . .

  • This song really got me interested in Cara Dillon, but even more so, Paul Brady. In the U.S. we got bombarded with crap so often, thanks for posting REAL music, with heart and soul.

  • You are right to thank us (and by us, I mean us over the other side of the pond, I can't lay claim, I'm english!)

But we must thank you equally, for Nickel Creek, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Patty Griffin.....

So Thanks. A fair swap, so long as we can share. Cheerio.

  • Sharing is good. I just had a workshop with Jerry Douglas in Chicago. I asked him abouting working with Aly Bain (wow). He'll be on your side of the pond this weekend I believe. Enjoy him ;)

  • whats the name of caras song sung in the end credits of billy connollys tour of ireland.its not there were roses its another 1

  • it's simply called "Ireland, Ireland!", but it's stll a wonderful song!

  • mrspike1986, the song in question is an adaptation of a song written and composed by Ralph McTell called "England" and the words changed from England to Ireland, the song is on YouTube.... regards

  • Apologies, that makes a lot of sense good Sir!

  • No it isn't.

  • Christ the Irish will argue about anything [ ask the snakes that fraud St Patrick was rumored to have banished from the island] but this duet is liquid silver and of this there should be no dispute. You idjits.

  • Indeed Molloyx, what a tedious load of old shit; the spelling is eejits by the way ;-). More misery from me though, I love Cara's voice but Jeez, I've been through her songs on YouTube and feel like opening a major artery. Cara, you are wonderful, but there is world outside dreariness.

  • Open away maddogsmuck. Each child of the christ has a special talent, some natural, some learned slowly in the midget school-house. And how awful to agree that this duet is the only one of its kind worth returning to in the vast and indefinite space of the incomparable You Tube. As for the dreariness I suppose you prefer the lovely emerald travel posters to a scourge like Smauel Beckett, eh?

  • Oh yes, oi luv da Oirland of da posters. I particularly like the one showing leprechauns being educated in the midget school-house. And I didn't know Christ had spread his seed, the dirty fecker; I always had an inkling he was gay. Unlike Beckett, who is as dreary as Dillon.

  • Beautiful voice and a lovely Girl.

  • Its Doire, not derry.

  • The first time I heard this I hated Paul's voice and didn't even finish listening. My head must've been screwed up that day, because I don't know what I was thinking. About a month ago I gave the song another try and now I just can't get enough. A beautiful song, two amazing singers and a room full of musicians with more talent in their left pinkie fingers than I have in my whole body. What's not to love?

  • KN, I know exactly what you mean....Now and then Paul seems oddly out of tune, but when you listen closer he is not, it's just that his way of timing differs from that of Cara

There's NOTHING not to love!! Brill

    cheers, Kees

  • outstanding.. gotta keep these brilliant songs alive. Hearing this tune really made my day! Mr Brady the legend, Ms Dillon gorgous n gifted.. rite on!

  • BigSebo2k7 its derry

  • Cara is beautiful

  • Beautiful version of a great song. If you're into this you'll want to check out our profile, ta.

  • I don't hear anything more English here; she's obviously influenced by American blues

  • incredible song, I'm not Irish but this song is still absolutely breathtaking. Amazing story about the soldier about to be hung in the gallows in front of his love. I cant find the chords anywhere can someone please tell me where I can find them?

  • DId you want guitar chords or piano? They're probably not too tricky, I'll have a crack at it, and keep you posted.

  • fuck man, I'd love the guitar chords! that would be great.

  • Either please, i would love to learn this! Cara makes me think we're all oidiots!

My love to all Irish folk, and our Scottish kin who seem to love us too!

  • Such dignity and proportion....such liquid silver voices. There is in the world no better venue for music that matters than the Trans-Atlantic Sessions.

  • Dignity and proportion and music that matters, having escaped into the outer space, travel there forever and confuse all the aliens.

  • It is precisely as she said.

  • What more can be said...perfectly done by two extremely talented people.

  • great

  • a lady from Derry and a Strabane together - some talent :D

  • How beautiful is that!

  • This is such a beautiful song.I was so pleased to find it, thank you so much for posting it. It really is lovely

  • can anyone tell me bout a song i heard a long time ago it was 4rm a derry band called panger ban i think it was called the slopes of the craigen ??? its powerfull

  • Cara is from Dungiven in County Derry.

Keep up the good work..........(Dungiven Lad)

  • Let Cara and her sister Mary - who sings at least just as good as she- sing for me at my death bed and the atheist in me will be convinced that heaven does exist.

  • its gonna b a little late for tht

  • This is legendary. Two voices that complement each other so well, and a great song. Maith sibh.

  • Cara is from Derry!! what a beautiful singer

  • Weres cara from???

  • Scotland!

  • what part?

  • She's from Northern Ireland... Derry to be precise...

  • oh right see i call derry ireland cause im from ireland but not derry...... and some 1 esle told me scotland:P

  • Ahh right I see lol

  • North/South same thing still Ireland - so still Irish

  • exactly, I mean those who live in england call themselves english, and in scotland their scottish....so in ireland they are???? exactly

  • emm... dont know if you know this, but it's kind of a touchy subject.

  • lol well I grew up here so I think I would know if it is a touchy subject. But it shouldn't be, if you are born here you are Irish, you can say you are British as well but you are still Irish, people may get touchy but they shouldn't. It has nothing to do with Catholic or Protestant.

  • lol am not being touchy but i was born here and my hole faily r from here but i don;t concider myself Irish.....

  • Being British is all well and fine but if you are born in Ireland you ARE Irish whether you consider yourself it or not. You are still British as are Scottish People English and Welsh.

  • lol but i wasn't born in Ireland, i was born in Northern Ireland :P

basically wot i am saying is in this case it is down to ones own personal opinion wot they concider themselves lol

  • Yes it is but Legally you are Irish, you werent born in the republic but you were born in IRELAND, being born in ireland doesnt mean you are from the south, It doesnt mean anything. But Northern Ireland is Still Ireland. Think of it this way, Ireland the country is in two parts. Northern Irelnd and the Republic. But just like America which Has North and South America, the whole place is still called America.

  • but northern Ireland is part of the UK so it is a diffo contry, but anyways am boared of this wee discussion lol

  • Yes it is part of the UK, but not Britain, so why do you call yourself British. Britain is England Scotland and Wales. You are Irish.....deny it all you wish but I don't see why that would offend you.

  • What right do you have to deny someone their identity? How would you feel if someone tried to tell you who you were?

As far as why it would offend people, try actually reading a little bit about Northern Ireland before you make that statement. It's a long and complicated history and there are 400 years of reasons to identify as EITHER British or Irish in Northern Ireland.

And I repeat, what right do you have to tell someone who they are?

  • lol i'm not offended, i just don;t lyk u telling me who i am that;s all i believe myself to be British because i am not from Ireland and because i have never been taught that i'm Iirish and because i am hte hlder of a BRITISH passport

  • lol it is not me telling you who you are.....its the country you where born in, Northern Ireland is part of Ireland.....You seem to think Ireland is only the republic, it isn't Ireland is the land which holds Born Northern Ireland and The Republic, don't confuse the two. And you are not British, you weren't born in Britain so unless you applied to have you nationality changed you are Irish.

  • look i am fed up of this debate lol i believe i am norhtern irish not irish, so lets just agree to disagree? k?

  • Can we disagree to agree.

  • lol woteva floats ure boat :P

  • i agree, i am northern irish not irish. but i wouldnt say im british, i hate dem cunts!

was born n bred in northern ireland and u come from the country northern ireland which makes u northern irish

  • Comment removed

  • are you stupid??? NORTHERN IRELAND is a separate country, you idiot. im Northern Irish, who the fuck are you to say who i am? im not a loyalist, i hate english. so why do you have to bring up shit about loyalists, small minded prick.

northern ireland and republic of ireland are two different countries, they re both on the island of ireland but two different countries. thats a FACT.

  • Comment removed

  • LMAO are you seriously that stupid?? here is an extract from wikipedia (an encyclopedia) "Northern Ireland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom situated in the north-east of the island of Ireland. " ................. fact, is that clear enough for you. you categorized me as a loyalist and other people, and that is how you are small minded.

p.s. how about you go look at a map, you will clearly see that the island of ireland is split in two, republic of ireland and NORTHERN IRELAND!

  • Regardless of what wikipedia says northern Ireland is a state or a kingdom as described in the name united kingdom not a country never has been. On a map Belfast has a border around it does that mean I am Belfastian, not Irish, northern Irish etc by your reckoning the people of the Republic of Ireland are not Irish either there Republic of Irelanders.

"go look at a map, you will see ireland is split in two, republic of ireland and NORTHERN IRELAND!" depends on wether its a tourist map or no

  • ok, you idiot. wiki is stating a FACT, i said who are YOU to say who i am, which the statement was not a fact.(you can not see the comment because the stupid twat removed his comment when he realized how stupid he was)

please tell me how you can argue that norhtern ireland is not a country??? it is exactly the same as me saying north korea isnt a country, wales isnt a country, scotland isnt country......... fucking me why do dumb fucks try to argue a fact?

  • LOL don't know where to start, northern Ireland was formed as a state not a country, scotland & wales are kingdoms within the united kindom (the clues in the name) north Korea is a country that acts independantly of any other country.

Northern Ireland is not a country I suggest you look up the definition of country before quoting "WIKI" as fact

  • so now scotland and wales arent countries, OK!

the UK IS A STATE consisting of four countries. fuck me you are dumb.
