hey hey hey, lets not bash their opinions, they have a right to them just as much as we have a right to our own. if AA is not their bag, it's not their bag. it works for me, but that doesn't mean it has to be the way everyone else on the planet gets sober. i'm happy with my life, and it seems that these guys are pretty happy with theirs, so win/win, right?
How could this guy be silencing people on youtube? Lord knows you put out serveral of your little fag anti AA videos, you don't sound to silenced to me.
Hey AAAAARRRGGGGG, don't worry about Bananaboy, he's just a lonlely man who refuses to take responsibility for his actions. He fucked up his life, yet it's AA's fault. Figures.
jesus christ, dude, i'm new to youtube, i didn't realize i needed to approve the thing, i'll do it now. everyone's not out to get you and your ideas, dude.
and to address your other point, I'm not religious. Many of my friends in the program are not religious, in fact i go to meetings with some pretty hardcore atheists many of which have real long term, happy sobriety.
yes, many of aa's members are pretty religious. sometimes, some of them can get a little over the top about it, but if that's their bag, that's their bag and that's got nothing to do with me. Man, AA is just a group of people. these people are going to have a large diversity of philosophies, cultures, lifestyles, etc. some of them will be religious. some of them will be pushy about it. but thats how it is anywhere. and
in fact, i've seen people who lead the meetings cut people off who are trying to push their religious beliefs on others. may i ask if any of you have ever gone to any meetings?
the "success" rate may be low, but thus far, no other treatment option has a higher success rate than AA. when you can show me something that works better than AA, then i'll be happy to switch. the people that don't "succeed" don't put in any work to stay sober. let me put it this way. I've never seen someone who thoroughly works the program on a daily basis go out and drink again.
According to "What works? A summary of alcohol treatment research" in R. K. Hester & W.R. Miller (Eds.), Handbook of alcoholism treatment approaches: Effective alternatives (3rd ed.), 2003, Allyn & Bacon." There are 37 other methods that work better that AA
interesting. i was unaware, i'll have to check that out. regardless, i've been going to AA for a few years and i've stayed clean and sober and pretty darn happy. i also go to a pretty liberal group where you don't find a lot of overly religious big book thumping hard asses.
But the program doesn't work. AA's own research only gives a 5% success rate. And just because AA says it has no opinion or alliances doesn't make it so. They lie about being religious too.
I work at a chemical dependency hospital and when our patients keep returning we ask them what went wrong and 10 times out of 10, they will say, "i stopped going to meetings, i didn't get a sponser, and i didn't call my sponser before i used." the patients that do not relapse are the ones that go to meetings regularly, get a sponser, and make friends in the program that will be a support system. This is a combination that does work, but a large percentage of addicts will never try that.
Well, after returning to inpatient status at least a dozen times I can tell you that going to meetings regularly, getting a sponsor, etc. is not the way to quit using drugs. I don't do meetings, I don't have a sponsor and it has been a year since I quit using crack and meth. You see the ones who got on the merry-go-round of treatment. If what you were doing was successful, why do you keep seeing relapsers?
we have a doc at our hospital who was in treatment 38 times, and when he finally started going to meetings regularly, got a sponser, did everything the hospital told him to, followed through with his aftercare, he stayed sober. But he had to want it. It makes our day when we find out so and so is still sober even if its only a few months since they left treatment.
Also, AAs own research only gives a 5% success rate, but you are saying the program works, its the people who are flawed. and the best you can do is tell them to go back out and dedicate their lives to the 12 step religion. No wonder they keep coming back, btw how much money do you make on not successfully treating them?
i'm not saying the people are flawed, i'm saying some do not realize the amt of work that is required to recover. there are people that will flat out admit they don't want recovery, they are just there because their family is mad at them, or the court says they have to, it's not because deep inside they want to.
and you know what, even if we didn't have patients coming in that had relapsed and were being readmitted to our hospital, all of our beds would still be full, so don't try to say that we are "unsucessfully treating people" so they keep coming back, so we make more money, with over 20 million people in the world addicted to various substances, we can definately fill 98 beds.
Actually, what you are really saying is there is no real treatment, you detox them then send them to 12 steps, but when someone is ready to quit they quit. 38 tx did not work, the doc decided it was time. If you are in AA or RR or SMART when you decide it is time to quit, that is what worked. Treatment is a scam,
hmm i'd never heard of that. as a member of AA, i think that's pretty fucked up. i guess there's assholes anywhere you go. doesn't change the fact that the program works though.
i assure you that alcoholics anonymous had nothing to do with this. AA itself is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution, does not engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes.

From what I've seen on the HBO website, this is nothing more than a 12step propaganda series. I had hoped for better from HBO.
