  • I'm using a 20" 1600 x 900 through VGA and there is not much difference between using with my 32" LCD LED Sony Bravia with HDMI.

  • I just switched from VGA to DVI. I just tested it on MW3 High Graphics, and well, it is such a difference I can not explain with words...

  • So if my LCD dosent have a refresh rate... why does it say... "refresh rate 60hertz"

    LOCKERGNOME FAIL

  • o0o

  • Guys go DVI! VGA is old technology...

  • VGA: 240p, we meet again

    DVI: >_> i got a headache

  • blabla

  • he sounds like stedmen from starcraft 2

  • Analog vs digital.

Digital is transferred in Bits. In order to get a good clean signal, the amount of bits have to be alot.

Analog is a pure electric signal, however if it isnt transferred in super high quality cables some noise/coloring can occour.

So both high-end digital and analog systems are good.

  • @AuroralAscendancy interesting you said the following "cables some noise/coloring can occur." I was playing BF3 and when I was switching to screen types 'standard' then 'Game' I could hear sound coming threw the speakers when using standard . My Graphics card can take DVI should I should go DVI then ?

  • @DefectedSalvations As in noise I meant visual distortions, not in sound. Switching to DVI won't affect the sound, the sound you heard probably is a disturbence in the signal from your soundcard to the speakers. Happens with grounded cables or with RCA cables when a cold front mears a hot one. What will happen if you switch to DVI is that you get a pure digital signal instead of an analog one. It doesn't make a huge difference, except for some people who experience less picture noise.

  • @AuroralAscendancy Ah k thanks for the info :) ... I use Firewire M-audio and my belief is the sound must be leaking into the Firewire at times . Going to buy a cord with better shielding . advanced nitrogen gas-injected cellular dielectric, Xtra Low Noise construction and high-density, triple-layer shielding to help reject interference and deliver fast and accurate signal transfer

  • @AuroralAscendancy but would you suggest all my connections have gold plated connectors ?

  • @DefectedSalvations Not any huge difference I guess, I haven't got that and it's high quality anyways. Even my connections to my soundcard isn't goldplated. I guess it makes a pretty minor difference, but if you'd like to. Since gold is a noble metal it won't need any more electrons and therefore it transfer electricity better... but that's on atom level :) If I'd chose I'd pick goldplated though.

  • Does the adapter actually change the resolution/quality?

  • i got a montor that is HDMI and VGA. my video card got VGA and DVI. i want do HDMI with my DVI. you think that be a good idea?

  • @rwmtiger yeah I JUST JUST did it about 30 minutes ago today -- tonight haha

um you get a somewhat clearer NOTICABLY brighter screen so GO FOR IT

  • @timpster93 hehe. i just got my HDMI/DVI. it look very sweet :P

  • my computer doesn't have 2 vga inputs, only 1 vga and one dvi-d. Can i use a vga cable and a dvi-d for 2 screens on 1 computer?

  • my monitor has a dvi and vga input and i got 2 computers so can i stick them both in?

  • @roelloos1 Yes you can.

  • he is all talk , does not show us what to do?

  • DVI has MUCH clearer writing

    VGA is Slower

    VGA Dosent Look as good

  • @TheAwsome301 But it's better :D

  • @TheMolly12342 DVI=Clearer than VGA

    DVI=Faster Than VGA

Trust Me,DVI IS SO Much bettter

  • By "LCDs have no refresh rate" he means there is not a light flashing ever XX hertz. Yes, they do update only every XX hertz, but it is not actually "refreshing" like a CRT.

In short CRT REFRESH RATE IS DIFFERENT THAN LCD "REFRESH" RATE.

Thumbs up so some people can learn something.

  • So, Which is better DVI or VGA?

  • LCD's have no refresh rate???

Sometime I wonder if this dude really knows what hes talking about.

  • HDMI!

  • Thanks for the INFO

  • I like the 22 inch wide View Sonic CRT(BEST CRT MONITOR), defiantly for editing pictures because of the best contrast levels and BEST red levels. for everything els I would use my 22 inch wide acer tftLCD using DVI-D because the video and games look so much better than CRT color range blends way smoother and noticeably sharper crisper quality. The whole red level thing about editing pictures is why I hate HP flat pannels always to bright of a white balance.

  • pirillo needs to get laid

  • You´re sooooooo wrong!

  • s-video is ftw

  • continuing my previous comment: also, how bout HDMI? from my experience, HDMI has worse picture quality than VGA ...

  • @exexilexile and its true. i did it once and it looked and ran like shit.

  • If I have a laptop that only has VGA port and Monitor that has only DVI port, and I use VGA to DVI, would the monitor be VGA quality? or DVI quality? As chris pirillo said, since it needs an extra step to go from VGA to DVI, would it use more CPU/GPU?i'm confused >_<

  • @exexilexile hell its all the same. dvi is just a digital and vga is analog thats the only real difference

  • @shadow444222 "vga & dvi are the same."LMFAO. Do a wikipedia search for both. Learn the differences. Then, you'll think twice about posting such a STUPID comment.Hook up a computer using vga to a 22" monitor( 1680x1050 max rez for example) watch dvd movies & play games that are 5 years old-present, then connect even a single link dvi cable. Do the same test.If you notice no difference in color & crisp image quality. you need your eyes checked.Photos will also look different in quality.Get a clue

  • @chronofusion no shit i was just saying analog and digital is the only damn difference. i did not say anything about quality difference what so ever and plus i have never even seen a difference in photos of all things.

  • 3:34 what???? i must be going mad did he really say lcd dose not have a screen refresh rate???

  • @sd9800 LCD monitors do not actively refresh the image a given number of times per second. They only change the moving images displayed on the monitor instead, so they do not have a refresh rate.

  • @cjwalsh7 then whats this 60 hertz and what not all about lol

  • @sd9800 01/07/2007

  • I have a monitor thats connected with both a DVI and a VGA cable. I want to take out the VGA and keep the DVI because I claim that its bad. my dad says it doesn't matter. Anybody know the truth?

  • @Andre35822

Your dad is an idiot. Tell him to stop pretending to have intelligence.

  • @Andre35822 it should be fine my lcd screen has an option to run DVI or VGA via push button. Are you sure your using DVI and still not VGA?

  • monoprice[dot]com; $5 DVI cables and $3 VGA's (GOOD VGA's; thick, properly shielded cables instead of the garbage that comes with LCD monitors, so the quality is almost the exact same as DVI), and about the same for adapters.

LCD'd (both CCFL and LED) have poor black levels, color consistency and motion blur even on today's latest screens. OLED's will drive them to extinction, hopefully ASAP.

  • I have VGA LED 1080p monitor, picture is good, even though its analog.

  • @XSpaceStormX

Well yeah, VGA isn't exactly terrible nor is Analog it's about the connection quality and manufactoring quality of the monitor in use. :)

But these days they want to force you to upgrade so naturally some monitors and cables will give you shitty results. (EX if you used a Different monitor with that VGA cable it might look like shit despite claiming the same specs)

  • @XSpaceStormX When i connect my (cheap) VGA cable to my TV, i have bad quality :P

There is a lot of ghosting on the screen, even at a low resolution.

  • @XSpaceStormX I have the option of both, but I don't have a DVI lead. Is there actually any real difference?

  • @XSpaceStormX people always bash 1080p vga, but it think if it would be such a quality hit they wouldn't sell it.

  • i like good ol fashioned VGA

  • HDMI FTW!!

  • I'd to see you do a video of this. I have a PS3 and 360, I have a DVI monitor and I was wondering if I could hook up my 360/ps3 to it. Thanks if you do answer.

  • @D12WorldNight yes you can

  • @D12WorldNight if you want to connect both consoles to single monitor get a monitor that have Vga and dvi will go with BX2450 LED monitor for xbox 360 grab xbox 360 vga cable its availble in amazon hook it to your xbox then on the other side hook it to the monitor and there will remain two cables red and wight hook them to your speakers get Logitech X-530 it come with console speakers adabter for your ps3 you will need hdmi cable hook it to the monitor i told you about and do the same for audio

  • lol 1:38 RoyerSkater15:liar :P

    haha

  • I came here because I'm upgrading my video card and my monitor both of which have VGA and DVI and I wanted to know which cable to get.

    Now I know.

thanks chris... and live pirillo community members.

  • ok so if i use a dvi-D to dvi-D cable but then have a adapter to female dvi-D to vga

    will that work?

  • @Cashilysh Of course you need hd cable for hd monitor.

  • "you will never go back (to CRT)"...

For color calibration work like photography you would spend five times what a CRT costs to get a "cheap" LCD that would giove the same results. No comparison with today's LCD technology.

A proper analog to analog VGA connectiongives incredible results--more than good enough even for critical color work.

Point well made on avaliablility of adapters for easy conversion from DVI to VGA (not the reverse)

    Otherwise good post.

  • my computer or hard drive is vga hook up only...however my monitor has multiple hook ups....vga...dvi...s-video...and hd analog......if i brought the wire that has vga on one side and dvi on the other...will it upgrade my monitor to digital or HD???

  • DVI FTW!!!

  • Chris, I used to have an old gateway crt monitor with a dvi connection,

  • S-Video LOL!!

  • my monitor is dvi but came with only a vga cable....wtf?

  • oh no SPIKE VGA...

  • write a script and stick to it. less blah blah, more concise accurate opinions.

  • IM BEGING YOU---Wich solution is better:

    Processor:Intel Core i5-650 Graphics card:Ati Radeon HD6850 RAM: 8 GB DDR3

    OR

    Processor:Intel Core i7-870 Graphics card:ATI HD 6870 RAM: 4GB DDR3 Apacer

By processor and graphics card seems that the bottom one is better but the RAM is 2 times lower..

Wich is better for gaming? PLEASE HELP MEE!!!!!

  • @C2aimar123 In games currently out you will never use more than 3/4gb of ram especially DDR3. For gaming your deffinitly bette going for the better processor and gpu with lower ram (Y) Hope this helps.

  • @C2aimar123 You should buy the bottom one, 4 Gb is more then enough to run the most demanding games.

  • @C2aimar123 The bottom one, cuz no game till present uses more than 4GB of total RAM...

  • My Crt has both 1080p and a DVI input. If im thinking right crts are the huge heavy ones that the front of the tv gets all staticy cause of the electrons. Then yeah crt, i am 100% sure its not a dlp also.

  • @neilharbin0 Any CRT cannot produce 1080p or 1080i or 720p. It just won't work. a CRT monitor having a DVI input i would like to know what the brand and model number is because I'm thinking it don't.

  • @bamfan2044 Its a Sony DA4 Chassis manufactured in 2002. i Just tested it with my new comp i just build and it does work.

  • @bamfan2044 Its a Sony DA4 Chassis manufactured in 2002. i Just tested it with my new comp i just built* and it does work.

  • LOL look at that shirt

  • I had a DVI and a VGA LCD. There is absolutely NO difference in picture quality, not at all.

  • Hey guys, I am honestly not that computer-savvy... I know that DVI is better than VGA, but can anyone tell me how important it really is? I want to buy Dell's Inspiron N5010 laptop and it has a VGA input. Other than Internet use, I don't really plan to do anything else on it - no games, photo editing or music creation. So is it important for me? I am really confused, someone please reply! Thanks in advance. :)

  • @MissTammylicious95

If you aren't planning for things like gaming in high resolution and everything else its not something you really need.

  • Just use DVI to VGA adapter. Then you are set to go.

  • Well...

The problem with DVI is that everything gets too bright on the screen and it gives me a headache. With VGA, it doesn't give me a headache at all with XP. Sure, I would love to go with DVI and 1080p. Maybe something is wrong here. Please help me out fixing that problem. I have Radeon XFS HD 6870

  • @dmana3172 check the brightness and contrast at your monitor menu OSD and put them lower, the eye strain is because when you plug the signal to DVI is pure digital and the preset config is to high.. I hope this helps you...seeyo!

  • this guy is the biggest nerd in the world, yet he is the most acknowledged person to come to help with tech stuff. lol

  • still trying to decide should i buy a dvi cord when i get a new graphics card or a adapter to vga my monitor does both currently i already have an adapter though and a vga cord

  • vga forever :D

  • My screen only supports resolution as high as 1680 x 1050. Is that hd?

  • @SCAREDBANANA its not 'HD' as such, but the 4:3 equivelent. 'HD' is 1080p, and yours is 1050p, so i guess its exactly the same, just a different aspect ratio

  • @SCAREDBANANA yeah that should be considered hd, my screen is, 1920 x 1080p sorry mean to show off

  • @SCAREDBANANA yea def hd!

  • @SCAREDBANANA Yeah computer monitors have been "HD" for a very looong time - "HD" is just a pretty catchphrase for the mainstream. Wait for, HD+/HD2 inthe near future...

  • I haven't seen any quality problems on VGA in the time i used it but i think i understand when i capture my PlayStation 3 using Dazzle i see the quality loss when going from HDMI to RGB the text takes about 1 Second to look clear

  • this guy dont know what the fuck he is talking about

  • You sound like John Carmack.

  • This guy either doesn't know what he's talking about or read the email to fast. The email said clearly that the dvi port was a DVI-D port. DVI-D doesn't have the analog pins needed for the converters.

  • i had a CRT with a DVI connection and a VGA connection with a switch to change the inpiut.. i think it was an ibm.

  • I've seen monitors with HDMI input on them. With that being said, which do think is better:HDMI or DVI?

  • I want to ask sumthin.. im kinda stupid bout this thing.. Can i get same same Quality if i use. HDMI to DVI converter.. my LCD have DVI port.. but no HDMI Port.. my graphic card only have HDMI port.. will i get HDMI quality using HDMI to DVI converter? need help here..

  • @TheNiykhaito yes i believe you will

  • CRT is more than 3x reliable more than Shitty LCD monitors, i had a 22" samsung LCD last year and it broke :S STUPID GAY line down the screen > : (

  • I realize this is an old video.... But I shall correct Chris's statement LCDs have refresh rates :/ just saying >.> Please do not say stuff if you do not have the facts Chris :/ and extra step? lol... afk

  • any one else reading the chat? its retarded

  • @:19 does he fart?

  • i have a BenQ g2410hd and use the VGA / D-Sub port for the pc and the dvi for ps3 and it looks awesome for both of them

  • I have a dvi to hdmi for my ps3 and monitor

  • My old CRT monitor (which I dont use anymore) have a dvi input... I just found that out a few weeks ago when I connected my labtop to it because the display on my labtop went bad. I was shocked that the old gieser support dvi. It was a very expensive monitor when I first got it though...

  • @treyatl2006 You're not the only one here, mine can actually push to 1650x1050! =D

  • You can not connect an analog monitor to a DVI-D output. Never!

And there is none existing adapter for that purpose. There are devices for that, which exceed the price of a monitor + graphics card combined.

He read it correct from the email, but didnt get/point out the difference between DVI-I (which can be adapted to analog monitors) and DVI-D (which cannot be connected to analog monitors whatsoever)

  • come to think of it, dvi to vga adapters are fuckin useless!! why?? becoz dvi-d to vga will not work coz dvi-d is digital and vga is analog. the adapter will not convert analog to digital hence, it will have no signal ryt?? the only adapter that will work is dvi-i to vga since dvi-i can receive both digital and analog signal. in the end, if you use dvi-i to vga adapter it will have no changes since the output will also analog. why bother using these adapters???!!!

  • I have an IBM DVI CRT. ;P

  • this helped a lot. I have a monitor with both DVI and VGA I now know to go with DVI thanks a bunch

  • dvi all the way

  • stop JUS PLZ STOP TALKING

  • lmao..."Don't come he makes us his slaves!"

  • LCD monitors DO have refresh rates.. what a dumb prick

  • MrSlivkGamer ... i have a 17 inc CRT and i have applid 1080p :P

  • ty for that clarification

  • CHE SOLA CHE SEI

  • I used to believe everything this guy says about computers up to the point where the says "LCDs don't have refresh rates" WHAT A DUMB ASS! LCDs do have refresh rates, 59Hz-75Hz is standard and 120Hz+ is for LCD that are 3D capable. Refresh rates are how fast the screen flickers, the faster it is, the less strenuous it will be on your eyes, CRTs just have a low refresh rate and thats all. They have better color than LCD but i'd rather go LCD. I wonder if everything else he said is bull like this

  • lcd's dont have refresh rates? bull

  • whats better HDMI or DVI?

  • HDMI uses the same pins as DVI but includes several others for sending digital audio through the cable as well. So as to you question, they are both digital video, and both support the same quality and resolution. In brief, they are very similar, but HDMI supports audio (most monitors don't support this anyways)

  • thanks for clearing that up for me :)

  • HDMI but its not worth the 50 bucks you have to buy the cable

  • there the same

  • lol, nice email reading.

  • Just adapter (like me)

  • IF I CONNECT a dvi cable to my gfx card and then i use a dvi to vga converter and plug it into my pc will there be any difference in the quality?

  • @freekeydude2009

Yes there will be a difference... it will not be as good quality, but thats not to say that the video quality will be horrible. it will still be good but not as fine detailed as if you were to run a fully digital signal (dvi-d with no converter to vga or dvi-a).

    translations:

(DVI-D) Digital Video Interface - Digital

(DVI-A) Digital Video Interface - Analog

and i forget what DVI-I stands for sorry but you shouldn't be having to deal with DVI-I plugs very often. research it.

  • Thx

  • but will the quality be better than a vga?

  • i need a little more details then.

i need to know. are you using a vga or dvi plug on your computer.

  • its the same setup which i described in mi 1st comment

  • no your first comment didn't really make sense. You said "if i connect a dvi cable to my graphics card" and then you said "then i use a dvi to vga converter and plug it into my pc" you have informed of plugging in two things, a dvi to vga converter and a dvi cable both to you pc. i dont know what you mean exactly. The only reason i could answer your first comment was because you said there was a converter involved and as soon as the signal is changed it looses quality.

  • yes.

  • wont be HD

  • my GFX card brought a DVI to VGA adapter, but I need a VGA do DVI =( because the VGA input has fried in my monitor (don't ask...)

  • im using and dvi to vga adapter now cause i got an old vga monitor on a new radeon 5750

  • LOL

    Good old videos

    Hahahah

  • hes just saying get a connector to convert dvi back to your vga monitor

  • have u ever had a girlfriend??? not including an online avatar girlfriend..

  • @Frankeeezy He is married to Ponzi

  • @pingpongwizzard you mean he WAS married to Ponzi

  • @mrwireful10000 No, he IS married to Ponzi

  • @pingpongwizzard they divorced last year

  • @Frankeeezy hes married bro. stupid kid

  • @Frankeeezy He has an wife...

  • @Frankeeezy He is married.

  • Refresh rate is different on LCD monitors so I can see how he say LCDs do not have refresh rates, but they indeed do, yet the difference is not analog but digital. Refresh rates on CRT's are demonstrated by flicker, where as refresh rates on LCD's are represented in image and video fluidity.

  • i think your server is down =/

  • ive been looking around and nobody explain shit about the difference. fuck dvi i'm sticking to vga. dumbass gpu and lcd companies selling their products with no free cable to begin with.. and i had to buy a cable worth $20? what a rip.

  • @markbriones3 tell me about it, i remember buying 40 something individual wires and manually connecting each pin (vga)...this was back in the day

  • no Refresh rate on LCD's? even though my sony bravia has a 100Hz refresh rate? wtf lol.

  • my Asus lcd has just 60/75hz refresh rate.. i guess he's wrong?

  • must've forgotten. because if something doesn't have a refresh rate, how does it work? O_O lol. even the new 200Hz LCD by sony's bravia range. oh well.

  • i really have no clue of what he is talking about, honestly xD

  • there r even new Panasonic Viera's that have a refresh rate of 600Hz

when will the 1Khz be coming out xD

  • holy shit, panasonic just smoked sony lol. but panasonics get their parts from korea and japan, while sony just gets 'em from japan, so the image quality is better. but WHOA! and i though my 100Hz was nice and smooth.. 600Hz would be like looking through a window O_O

  • this guy is so lost !

    1. CRTs are way superior in all aspects to any lcd or plasma. Period

    2. There are lots of sony hd crt tvs out there with dvi inputs.

    3.lcds have refresh rates (60 and 120hz)

4.dvi trasmits the same signal as hdmi but without audio and some other copyright and extras.

  • 1.CRTS can't do 1080p but have an awesome viewing angle ..

  • @MrSlickGamer of course thay can. they can do better than 1920x1080. 99% are 4:3 and they can do 1920x1440, so that's alredy bigger than 1920x1080 but some can also do 2048x1536 so that's a lot bigger than 1920x1080. :P

  • @MrSlickGamer

1920x1080 because the standar crt monitor are 4:3, but some graphic desing crts can do for example 1920x1440 in other words they can BUT the quality isnt that good like and new lcd which does 1080p or more.

  • @MrSlickGamer

1920x1080 because the standar crt monitor are 4:3, but some graphic desing crts can do for example 1920x1440 in other words they can BUT the quality isnt that good like and new lcd which does 1080p or more.

  • @MrSlickGamer laaaaal, my crt can do 2048*1536, and the Sony FW900 can do 2304*1440

May be old stuff, but damn!

  • so can i do it or will it not work all i wont it to no

  • hi my gf freind got a pc and like to cnek pc to the tv but dont have vga on the tv but have a hdmi on the tv can i pluk in a dvi and a dapter to vga to hdmi. will that work can some one help me pls

  • i connected by computer with hd4670 through hdmi, and the picture quality was definitely better than when i used vga, both at 1920x1080. since dvi is pretty much like hdmi without audio, id say for image quality, go with dvi.

  • if i get a VGA monitor, would it work great with my Call of duty moderenwarfare 2 on xbox360?thanks.

  • i run my 360 with a vga cable to my vga lcd works awesome looks great

  • why dont you just get a HDTV?? thats what I have and it looks sweet

  • Hi, I have a shitty 256mb card. (well so it says on the box.) but when i installed it the system info on the pc says its 512mb! Why is this? Is it 256mb like the box says or 512mb and is this common? Thanks.

  • maybe your motherboard got some internal graphics card 254mb
