This was in a remote place. Usually stray dogs are found in cities and large towns. Dogs are also much less intelligent than monkeys. This of course doesn't warrant that monkeys should get more attention, and in truth, all animals should never be put down. But also, monkeys are viewed as innocent, childish mirrors of ourselves before we have really committed any bad mistakes in our lives.
Plus, the greatest devotee in Vedantic history is a monkey much more spiritually elevated than ourselves.
