Tim Hardin version is by far the best version of this I have heard. Second best is the Small Faces then the Four Tops. This version is tragic. Really very bad. Led Zep really lost it after Zep 4. First two records were beyond compare
great shout for Marriott plant hugely influenced by Steve of who he used to follow (Small Faces)...check Whole Lotta A Love/All You Need is My Loving for virtually the same lyrics etc. But this was taken from an old blues song previously..etc...Steve versions is brilliant in fact this is top quality first time i ever heard but rem the Four Tops also covered it & wow that takes some beating!
led zeplin all ways takes me back to a time when i was child camping in the bush with my mum/dad and inlaws . way back in the 1970,s / 1980,s it was the good old days . . . ... THANKS MR PLANT ! . . . you and the other band members did a good job . . .
Ho ok, I answer what I know (but you are not funny;)) : It appears in "Fate of Nations", 1993, by Robert Plant. It is not a Led Zeppelin Album and not a Led Zeppelin song. But sometimes, it's said to be the best Robert Plant Album after the Led Zeppelin period, a very good album.
Yes this is a Tim Hardin song but Plant says the version of this song by The Small Faces was a big influence on him as well. Steve Marriot had one of the greatest voices in pop/rock.
Trulies??? This is the best version for this song. Plant's got the voice of a god... it is simply perfect... it is emotional... it is... it Robert Plant!
if I were a carpenter?.. hmm. I'd go on tv and call myself Joe the carpenter and tell everybody how raising the capitol gains tax on millionares screws guys like me.
as much as i like plant and cash and ledzep and all those who cover hardin, all their hardin covers just suck compared to hardin's original.... he truly feels what he sings
Agree with yo utotally my friend. Had the honor of meetong and speaking with Percy earlier this year! A legend for sure. Chech out the Small Faces verion of this sonf tho as it's well worth a listen! Best
Well, I would say that Marriott sang it like a young guy, full of energy, fallen in love... you know. And I can feel more wisdom or life experience from Plant's singing. Both versions are truly great and I listen to both of them almost every day. :-)
Well... I just finished listening to the West's version and I must say I like Plant's version much more. IMO this version is much deeper and intimate...
I'll have to disagree with you casey on this one. i did just check out Dan Fogelberg's. I think Plant's version with the full orchestra behind him makes his the best. Now maybe his vocals can be argued(well hell everything is arguable)that being said the music is so soothing and beautiful.Bobby Darin's & Stevie Wonders version is different because it is so soulful. A true test of a great song. It can be covered by many artist with their own take and still be a great song
I think Plant--especially the New Plant is greatest rocker we have at the moment--but I like the original version of this song better, which was written and sung by Tim Hardin, who was another casualty of sixties. I think Hardin did it at Woodstock.
The first record I can remember listening to was a 45 of Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. That's been oh, say close to 40 years ago. I've always been a Johnny Cash fan. Never did quite understand his thing for June Carter. She couldn't sing that well. She had a squeaky tone in her voice I find annoying. Every singer and group puts their own spin on a song. This isn't so bad. It's no Bobby Darin, but whose is? I've heard Darin sing it with other people to a disasterous conclusion. We all have favs.
carter family1928 define "better"..no, wait, i'll help you.. i'll go out on a limb here and guess that you are a fan of johnny and june. good for you. doesn't mean that their version of the song is better.. it just means that you like it more.. by the way, the next time someone gets drawn into one of these "who does a better version of a particular song" typed arguments and ends up admitting he had it wrong will be the first time it's happened.. anywhere.
it's funny...i read this comment without looking at the "post-er"....as I read the last sentence I knew who wrote it. Even still. I'm shocked at how much I love Bobby Darin's version, even if he has Zamfir the pan flautist come in at the end, leading one to believe that Mr. Darin may suddenly turn into a satyr....

I like this, but I like Leslie West's version even better. Check it out. NOBODY's voice was more powerful than the Great Fatsby's.... just enter "Leslie West - Mountain Tribute - If I Were a Carpenter" into search bar in youtube. Think ya'll enjoy it.
you might not like it condrix, but when you talk about "one of the most powerful, most distinctive voices ever" in rock music, Leslie West is right at the top.
Oh Zeppelin is great, im a big big fan. But Leslie West & Bob Dylan I firmly believe have the 2 most recognizable voices in rock history. The Zepp has a long list of amazing music, but when it comes to vocal power, even Ozzy stated noone in rock had the raw vocal power of Leslie West.
Steve Perry? I think the Journey lead singer had a great crystal clear high pitched voice. Very powerful. Leslie vocals were much more brash, bluesly, raspy, in your face, balls-to-the-wall power. Polar opposite of Perry. I think they would have big trouble doing the others' music.. Yet both are amazing.
The original was written and sung by Tim Hardin in the mid sixties, who died of OD soon after recording this. I love Robert Plant, but still think Hardin's version is best. Too much unnecessary orchestration in this version. It's really a simple song, almost a folk song.
ORA ORA, quem iria imaginar.. Finalmente alquém q fala a minha língua. De qualquer maneira, fiquei sem palavras :) 5000000000 hundred million stars, meu amigo! Obrigada por compartilhar
The track has been covered by many artists including the The "Great" songwriter and artist Tim Hadrin who died of cancer and whom Plant paid tribute at a concert -when he launched his 1993 album and covered the track also sung by Rod stewart.
Other artists Include the Four Tops and Bobby Darin both in 1967.
The track is also in a later album Sixty Six to Timbuktu (2003)
The artist is definitely Robert plant the lead singer with Led Zeppelin. The song is from his 1993 album Fate Of Nations, one of many he has recorded since as far back as 1984as a solo artist.

Is this on an official Led Zep release? Which one?
dantean 3 years ago
It's a Tim Hardin's song. It is also played by Johnny Cash, Johnny Halliday...
The led Zeppelin one is one of the most beautiful.
Alchy00 3 years ago
Yeah I know whose song it is (Hardin's own version at Woodstock is still the best), but did Led Zep themselves ever put this on an official release?

Yes it was a good question, I hope everybody could have so good questions... Thank you to have ask it ;)
