Will the carrot sound out of tune if the measurements are off by 1/2 a millimeter or 1 millimeter? I would to make this, but I live in the U.S., and it's hard to find drill bits measured in millimeters.
@haddock929 a 1/2" drill (instead of 12mm) bit will change the tuning ( use a 15/32" drill bit if you can find one or buy a 12mm online) for the finger holes use a 9/32" if possible
Amazing! Clarinet is my primary instrument, and this just blows my mind! It also gives me a great idea for instruments to make for a science competiton I have coming up. Thanks a ton, and your hat is awesome!
This is awesome, just one question. I play clarinet and have an extra mouth piece and I was wondering How would you use a clarinet mouth piece on your carrot clarinet??
How would I fit a tenor sax mouthpiece to it? any different connectors or something because i am a tenor sax player and i want to make one of these! Please tell me
@CinnamonStudios101 I'm not sure a Tenor sax mouthpeice would work, it's too big. You'd have to find a pretty big carrot lol There's a reason the Eb Clarinet doesn't use a Bass Clarinet mouthpeice.
this was so cool, i just had to try it for myself. however mine was not near in tune. i think because i didn't have the exact drill bit sizes. try, try again, i'm determined to get it right!
do the proportions of distances between the holes work out on mr curly? ei; double the distance between the holes, and it become and octave lower? which of course means if its doubled again (because surly mr curly is more than an octave lower than the carrot) the note would therefore be another octave lower?
@5648213 too many variables I'm afraid......so it's not that simple, but........I will eventually post a Mr Curly tutorial, or even better I am releasing a book / cd / dvd combo with various instruments including Mr Curly, Carrot clarinet and other single reed instruments
I have decided that I am going to make a carrot clarinet and bring it to orchestra rehearsal as a gag on our director. :) This is so, so awesome. I love how it sounds!
About how many mm do you take off for the funnel on the end?
@CreemeOfCheese Actually, even though there are straight versions of saxophones, they are still conical; the beginning of the tube, the mouthpiece end, has a smaller bore diameter that gets larger throughout the entire length of the instrument. The clarinet, on the other hand, is cyndrical because it has the same bore diameter throughout the instrument and gets just a tiny bit bigger at the bell end. :)
@SquealyD - Would you please post these different measurements? Or just send them to me! I can convert to standard measurements, or you could baby this lazy American..... (After all, I was a music major - I can only count to four!)
This is tuned like a tin whistle/irish flute! I play both, so that's an incredibly easy way to get into reed instruments. I'm tempted to try building a semi-permanent one from wood or plastic.
Brilliant stuff, thanks a million for posting this video, very helpful. I can't imagine I would have had much look myself fingering out the measurements!
Thanks again and keep making your immensely inspirational videos. :)
Why would anyone by a clarinet knowing they could make one out of a CARROT?!??? Amazing!!!!

Actually, wouldn't it also be considered like a saxophone too, because there are straight versions of a tenor...etc.?
