Do beagles tend to run off a lot when walking them?

Beagles are great dogs, and very friendly. They are however hunters and that natural instinct to sniff tends to cancel out alot of training as all they care about is getting to that next spot to smell.

I have a beagle, love him, but hate walking him. My last landlord had 5 & while the dogs where spot on trained seeing something like a stray cat would completely cancel that out. My brother in laws mom just had shoulder surgery becuase her beagle took off during a walk. (continued)

@spiritse (continued) A beagle is normaly easy to train except in this one area. My dog if excited will pull at the leash to the point of choking himself and keep going. What I found works best is get a longer leash, it'll give the dog a bit more slack to sniff for a second without hurting your arm. Once he sees you walked past him he will hurry up to stay near you. If he's really acting up. stop dead & make him sit, once calmed down, then he can go.

@spiritse (continued) practice in your driveway walking up & down and doing a full U-Turn at each end. This will get the dog in the habbit of staying near you on a walk.

Then if you live in a area with minimal distractions, try a quick walk off leash when his behavior improves. My dog Phil goes right into run mode when the leash is on him, but without it, he stays right at my side.

Most importantly, have fun with the little guy.
