I always root for Federer against Nadal, but that doesn't mean I'm still not a huge fan of Rafa. His game is a true marvel, and he has given us some of the best matches in tennis history; I still get giddy just thinking of his showdown with Verdasco at the 2009 AO. I truly hope he recovers from his grueling style of play, although I am not optimistic seeing that he has not been the same player for over a year now despite being in his physical prime. Federer's game is pure talent. Such players always need to mature in order to perform in 100%. Nadal's game is physical and very tactically based. And, Nadal's knee doesn't make him unfortunate; he is the very cause of his problems. His motion which is far from being as fluent as Federer's makes him injury prone. If you had the fact he pushes these shot with muscles rather than technic, it makes it really risky.

Notice how he suffers pain often on hard court. Injuries doesn't show brilliance, but an overpushed wrong motion.

Nadal is simply not as perfectly coordinated and not as fluent as Federer.

He doesn't moves as lightly and where your technic lacks, you have to put a mortgage on your body and use more of your energy to compensate.

It's not a big problem, until you reach your body's limit like pros, and espacially Nadal with such an energetic play. He pushes it too much for what he can handle and this causes him injuries.

This is about footwork. And, yes running after everything is either due to footwork faults, using a wrong strategy, missing your stroke or wrongly judging the ball(trying to ru na ball he doesn't manage to get to).

But, this must be added to his technical problems. They aren't so big, so obvious, but when you push the shot as hard as he does, they become considerably risky.

I was mostly thinking about his forehand swing.

Federer is much more successful than Nadal, and he does use much less effort per stroke, and he does have lighter footwork, where Nadal's western style is prone to tendonitis everywhere. Nadal is the clay king, but Federer will be much more successful in the end. Fed can create almost magical angles and shots. By the way, Federer can and does change it up often. He's very flexible with his spins and shots, and though his (and no ones) topspin will be great like nadal's, fed is still better.
