I would say it's not true. What Baird refers to is exactly a martial ART, if you just want to learn to harm others to "survive" it is not an art, but just crude violence that will only make you more angry and attract more trouble. The art lies in overcoming your fear and anger and transform something destructive into something beautiful that will help you to become a stronger and more peaceful person. In the long run, I believe it is these persons that "survives".
