  • How long will it run at 70+mph before the CVT Belt explodes? It would be awesome if the drive train would hold up to that kind of speed all the time so I could drive one to work on the freeway. The RZR's are fun and remind me of a high performance go-kart except with more ground clearance, goes faster, and is AWD.

  • @jaggedxfilms Commander is faster it is indeed heavier which is not a bad thing think about the traction which also offers better handling by better traction. The engineering is all around better! It also has a better interior nicely laid out with great options and accessories.

  • @jaggedxfilms The RZR and the Commander have different applications, one is for performance and the other is a hybrid of work and play. I don't think its fair for either one to be compared againts each other. It's like comparing a sports car to an SUV.

  • @yamaha69x, Now I'll be straight up with you, I'm no fanboy of either, but until I can see a non-biased comparison, I'll believe it when I see it. Power to weight and the rider make a HUGE difference too. I'm not saying the Raptor is better over the YZF, but usually the larger motor should be faster and more powerful than the smaller motor. And all the drags I've seen have had so many variables that the comparison was null.... a 450 can be faster if the rider is better...

  • @mediarocker543 but your looking at drag races you take any 450 and put it against a raptor and there goin to win on the corners and stuff drags is all who gets the best start and can shift better. but when you have a raptor trying to hit a corner its more top heavy then a 450 and therfore harder to corner thus 99.9% of the time a 450 will win that race same a 900xp over a 1000 like the can am the 900 is lighter and better suspension thus better cornerer

Not even that but considering the Side by side is heavier... sheesh.. I mean really I can see why the YZF-450 is faster. It has a better power to weight ratio. Can-am, Polaris, Yamaha, it don't matter, what matters if you get out there and have fun.

  • just bought a brand new 2012 RZR 900 XP in White. Fricken amazing. traded in my 2010 rzr 800 for this bad boy. put poly roof and windshield. Tracks for the winter. doors, heater, etc. No one has been able to beat me on any course. 4-wheelers have tried. can-am 1000xt has tried. none have been able to beat me. name the place i'll race for papers. stock engine only.

  • @jaynen I don't have that many friends. Seriously, the XP is a true performance machine. I guess it all depends on what you like to do best. We get alot of customers who ask us what the best machine to buy is and it really does depend on your personal needs. A guy who rides trails in the woods probably doe not need an XP and a guy who has a family or a lot of ride along friends may be better with a RZR4. You have to pick your poison so to speak. All are great vehicles.

  • The CVT cluch system does not use sprockets. You can make changes to the cluches that will change the power delivery to a degree. As with anything else if you get more top speed you are going to give up some bottom end. the only way to eliminate this problem is to actually increase the power output of the motor to spin more RPM or build more tourque on the bottom. then tweek the clutch accordingly. These things run 75mph already. pretty fast for a vehicle like this. IMHO.

  • if you wanta go faster, is there a sprocket system on these that you can change up ratios? or even if its belt dont they make dif' size belt pulleys? I know if you put taller tires, youd get more MPH, but loose low end. I think every inch bigger then stock is +5mph, and same if you - and inch, youll losse -5mph. thats the way it was on a cpl quads i had.

  • the reason why its not bucking like the can am is because the momentum of the can am is greater than the rzr and all that momentum is causeing the shocks to contract more than the rzr and the cause of all this is weight and center of gravity

    I would love to see how the Polaris footage is "all doctored up" and also I'm pretty sure "aftermarket shocks" does not mean a machine is "bone stock".

    And as far as rock crawling (or whatever extraneous situation where the XP has an obvious unintentional design) goes, it's pretty obvious that's not what this machine is meant to be used for.

    The contact was to the Right side frame rail, no damage, just a scrape. Running any of these side by sides in rocky stuff like this is going to result in some scrapes and scratches. the under side is pretty well protected.

    The trailing arms are pretty beefy. not going to "fold up" as was mentioned.

  • The launch trailer from Polaris is actually pretty good at showing what the XP900 is capable of doing. If you go to their website and watch at around a minute thirty in they have the XP going over some pretty rough stuff at a pretty high speed. And it's not bucking like the stock Commander does.

    They never show the XP hitting the whoops as fast as they try to hit it with the Can Am. Not only that, but they use an XT and you can be certain they made no adjustments to better the suspension setup for the terrain. Polaris' footage is all doctored up. (Youtube won't let me post a link) But the vid you saw is the vid I was talking about. It's a bone stock Commander with a set of aftermarket shocks. My comment was that the Can Am suspension DOES work, the clip is proof.

  • @ATRTed i love how they compare curb weights on a machine with more fuel capacity, a 600 pound capacity bed, a beefy front bumper, a 4,000 pound winch, more coolant, longer wheelbase, etc. with a straight face. Seemed desperate to me. I walked away thinking the Commander did pretty damn well for having all that extra weight!

    If your looking for a winch and weight capacity, then your looking at the wrong machine. This is designed for racing and agressive driving. The Commander would be a much better machine for you.

Those trailing arms are too long, If they worked better being that long i think that can am would have made theirs like that. a rock will hit one before the wheel gets to it and will eventually break.

  • The shock testing video shows the Commander with a complete set of aftermarket custom tunned Fox shocks. it is impressive, but not stock.

  • THE COMMANDER X COMES WITH FOX SHOCKS. WHERE THE LINE UP. SOME SIDE BY SIDE DRAGS. AT THE END OF THE DAY IT IS STILL A POLARIS. JUNK!

  • without getting into a huge debate about suspension geometry, camber, caster, toe, scrub ect I can say this, I have driven both vehicles extensively. have you? Didn't think so. The Can-am rides nice but is very sketchy at high speeds.The XP simply works better. it has better shocks more travel, and much better weight distribution. I am not a Can Am hater. The XP is just a better sport vehicle. The Can Am is way better for hauling manure.

The RZR is a pure sport vehicle which make it better going higher speeds on the trail. the can am is made for both sport and work. so until can am comes out with a sport side by side then why compare two vehicles from two different classes. It is just like comparing a F150 lightining to a shelby GT 500. of course you know which one will be a better track vehicle.

The Can Am is a very well built, well thought out vehicle. As you said these two vehicle are designed with different primary purposes in mind. We are happy to try to answer any questions about the new XP.

  • Sure the Commander is faster in a straight line, but the XP 900 is what, almost 300 pounds lighter? Handles better? And has lower CG? And a better AWD system? And more aftermarket support? And an actual legit racing history with actual legit wins? Oh. It does have all that. Well there you have it.

  • Rear suspension is 100% different from the can am. The most noticable difference is that it actually works.

    I have driven both and i can say that the RZR is way more fun to drive. The Can-AM is a nice vehicle for sure but it does not have the sport riding capabilities that the RZR has.
