  • OK, I'm doing this vibrato thing quite well but having to find a wall to push the scroll up against is embarrassing. Just Kidding... LOL You're the first teacher I've seen that actually has a plan to begin and proceed along from a decent foundation of education. I'm teachin my wrist to do the moving but I find my thumb doing too much neck supporting and thus takes away from the vibrator movement. Any tips on adjusting the violin chin rest and support? Am I to pinch it firmly with my chin?

  • Hello professor, I've just picked up violin and been trying to learn viibrato but the problem i've been having is my bow keeps on wanting to go in sync with my vibrato hand. Like trying to pat your head while rubing your belly lol, is there any exercise to stop this?

  • i WILL learn vibrato. NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER SURRENDER! ;)

  • @00Jabberwoofles00 Im doing it! omg Im doing it!

  • @professerv omg, thank you!!!!

  • hi professor, everytime i put my thumb on the bridge, the violin gets all shakey, are u meant to put ur thumb on the bridge?

  • You have a great way of teaching but...My hand has died!!!!!!!!

  • Hi herkson101, I made another vibrato just last week in an attempt to help you relax while learning vibrato. Good luck!

  • OMG my hand is gone -.- shit this is hard !! -.-

    but never give up =D

  • This was a really great explanation and extremely helpful! Thank you so much for posting!

  • Em....my finger keeps touching the E string when I'm 'vibrating' my second finger..... :(

  • Hi Professor, is one year the average time it takes to learn vibrato?

  • A year ??? O.O Oh well I better star right away!

  • My pinkie was so up on this exercise!! lol How did he know!?

  • thank you so much professor v...i can do it now a little bit! i introduced you already to my friends as my teacher :))

  • Thank you very much professor. My teacher only taught me arm vibrato... I might try to learn this one.

  • This really helped a lot

  • Hi ProfessorV. I've played the violin for 1,5 years now, and I'm currently working on Bach double 1st and 2nd violin. I've been working on my vibrato for a while now, and I' m finally feeling I'm getting the hang of it, BUT its totally uncontrolled. How can I get the vibrato under control? I want the smooth, relaxing vibrato..

  • Hi professor, I was wondering if finger length had anything to do with vibrato? I

Have short fingers and I can't do it

  • Hi ProfessorV, I have one problem, my violin keeps on shaking when I do vibrato. Is there a way for it to stop shaking?

  • Hello professor, I've always wondered ever since learning arm vibrato, is it preferable to be using wrist vibrato? All the accomplished violinists I've seen in person use hand vibrato, and I was wondering if there's a difference in the sound that it creates. Thanks.

  • Hi TheOtherSideses, If you watch Isaac Stern or Joshua Bell, you'll see arm vibrato. I believe it is more taxing to use arm vibrato, which can lead to physical problems after many years of use. The wrist/hand vibrato is probably safer, although some students find it more difficult to learn. I recommend learning this one first, then adding the arm vibrato so you can have a wide range of colors in your playing, and also able to be very relaxed when needed. Good luck!

  • Thank you ProfessorV,

This is really helpful, I learned how to do vibrato with my 2nd finger. I still need to work it out with my other fingers. Just be patient you guys :D. Take about one day doing each step and in 2 weeks, I guarantee you can do vibrato with one finger.

  • thumbs up if this helped you out:)

  • Thank you so much! I have been playing violin for years but i have never gotten the hang of vibrato. My teacher has helped me a lot but it hasn't worked. Thanks to you i can now do a decent vibrato while playing. Thanks :))

  • Thank you!

  • I'm about to cry, this gets really frustrating ):

  • I cracked a smile when you said "the fleshy part"

  • I can hear the vibrato only when I played on D string :(

  • I still can't do vibrato though

  • Excellent, probably the best explanation out there for getting this down. Thank you.

The problem I am having is being able to do a vibrato and use the bow at the same time. I have a tendancy of vibrating the bow as well, any suggestions? I am getting frustrated at not having both my hands work independantly.

  • Dear ProfessorV, how should I adjust my bow pressure and bow speed when I'm doing a vibrato? I always feel the sounds are extremely itchy and awkward. Is that a problem with my violin or my bowing techniques? My violin is a beginner one.

    Thank you sir.

  • Can you do finger vibrato? I was told i do that one but it's not strong so I want to do wrist. Thanks

  • how long do you practice to play good like this?

  • The post below is not a criticism - I know your video is the standard approach and it's very clear. Just wanted to point up an alternative. Also, when I do achieve a relaxed hand, I find the scroll keeps steady even if I leave the base of the first finger in contact with the neck, which helps keep things simple...

  • I struggled with this type of step-by-step bottom-up approach, using Fischer and your videos. Margaret Rowell and Kato Havas offer a more organic approach, based on ensuring that the hand is truly relaxed and balanced. Then I found that vibrato came quite spontaneously and naturally - you simply visualise the finger teetering on the edge of balance like a tightrope walker. I went from no vibrato to a decent technique in a single 5 minute step. If you're relaxed and balanced, vibrato is a cinch!

  • man..its not cooperating..my wrist is stiff and my thumb goes off into another world

  • @professorV Hi professor, I can only rock my finger left and right, I can't rock it back and forth, any ideas? thx

  • is it okay if i take my thumb off the neck when i vibrato because i cant put my thumb on the neck when im vibratoing

  • I'm so frustrated i can't get my stupid wrist to cooperate!!! AHHHHHHH!!! i keep wanting to move my arm!! GRRR!!!

  • Thx so much for the help! great vid. vibrato on a violin is so hard for me

  • its frustrating haha!

  • Hi professorV!

I started with my violin lessons exactly two years ago. When I asked the teacher what was the right time to learn the vibrato, she said it's not something you "learn", it just comes naturally after a while. :s

What is your comment on that?

  • arrghh! it looks so easy but its so hard DX my violin teacher was trying to show me but i didn't really get it so I decided to get some more examples online ... but still not doing so hot -.-

this explanation is a lot more helpful than my teacher's though =)

  • how long did it take for You to learn it , Proffesor, Because im a begginer at vabrato and i think i move my arm, Any advice? Thanks:0

  • To Fucken hard ugh -:/

    Good teaching though

  • Awesome. U are good teacher.

  • dang it i cant get it >.<

  • i still dont know how to do it helppp

  • my pinky!! crap!

  • Hey Professor, I can do it, but I'm shaking my whole violin not just my wrist...my whole violin is shaking when I do this. Any ideas?

  • @Aero159X You're probably ''forcing'' your vibrato. Try wrist excercise and relax your hand more.

  • caro professore il video mi è stato di aiuto...lei è tanto saggio e la vostra intelligenza sarà di aiuto a tanti tanti ragazzi!..complimenti!...da massimo""..

  • I got it! I was just holding it wrong. I was gripping it like a blues guitarist instead of a classical guitarist! thanks for all of your vids

  • I'm never gonna get this

  • Thanks, this is very helpful. Practicing this is some of the most hideous noises I've ever played. It's a little embarrassing =\

  • Excellent tutorial. I have played 'cello for over 40-years and vibrato on 'cello is fairly straightforward. I just bought a brand-new violin, and trying to get vibrato on it is difficult at best. This demystifies the process. Many thanks!

  • ProfessorV, my teacher wants me to try and do a finger vibrato?, which is very hard for me since I'm adult violin beginner (26 years old). She hasn't suggested any other versions on vibrato like wrist, which I can do. I have even done wrist vibrato while she wasn't looking and she said it sounded good. Im respecting my teachers technique, but maybe the finger vibrato is easier on your joints in the long run and that's why she teaches it?

  • Thank you so much!! This video is great :) x

  • @cookie12386 - oh ok . thanks a lot.. it will take me a while i guess, to change that now.. :) ... thanks anyway

  • so... frustrated...

  • Professor, I've been playing the violin for 18 years now, and I'm quite good at the violin. I've got great arm vibrato but ALWAYS struggled with wrist vibrato (it was the one thing I've struggled with). I've had 3 teachers throughout my life, and have tackled this issue with all 3, but none of them could help me. Watching this video has helped me immensely with what I'm actually doing wrong with wrist vibrato. I'm so grateful you're doing vids on youtube. Thanks so much!

  • @123zingful no, don't move in side to side, that's not a correct vibrato! good luck tho :D

  • Hello Professor, I have a question about vibrato video, you mention that we should move the finger back and forth but when I do vibrato my finger moves from side to side (so that's movement along the length of the nail). So I want to know if that's right? and if vibrato can be done in different ways. Thank you.

Also I would like to thank you for the videos, I have found them very useful. :)

  • Thank you. Thank you. And Thank you! I used to think I would never be able to get vibrato. Now It's not as difficult as I thought it'd be. I'm already noticing a difference when I practice thanks to this video. :]

  • @King54581 i think your shoulder rest must be put higher if u have a long neck. I have a a shoulder rest that is adjustable. If u rest ur chin on the tailpiece, maybe it'll be better if you put your chin rest on it. (i dont know how to replace chin rest, tho.) i hope this helps. Also check whether ur shoulder rest is put in a good position (i've ever been playing violin with my shoulder rest wrongly adjusted and....i played worser!!! lol)

  • im shaking my violin is that bad i think im doing it right but my violin is moving

  • Professor, this is my first time coming to you for help. I can only use vibrato on first finger notes and some second finger notes. Any ideas why and how to use vibrato on all notes?

  • Hi TechnoColoredMuffins, I can't promise this will help, but you should try changing the position of your thumb. Perhaps bring it under the neck a little. Sometimes you can find a spot where it feels balanced. Try not to distort your hand too much or it will cause you problems later. If you are working on third finger, only have the three down. Get the others out of the way (you can learn to add them later). Good luck!

  • thankyou so much! i just got my violin today and now i can do vibrato perfectly :)

  • I have been playing the violin for 3 years and thought I was doing vibrato the right way.. I wasn't! Thanks! This video really opened up my eyes. :D

  • I have 2 weeks playing violin, I can kinda do it now...

but its not as good as yours

  • @acolytes777 Really?! :o It usually takes months

  • @StradAmatiViolin yeah, maybe I got it faster because I also play guitar :)

  • Been trying to get vibrato down for about three years in my seven years of playing. It's hard. Well, kinda. I keep getting better each year. And Erm, I wanted to say, I think this video actually kinda helped me understand vibrato better. You explained it a bit better than my teacher did. So, thumbs up! And thanks. (:

  • @paloozapoofshhh ...This is my fourth year playing the violin and I still can't do vibrato.

  • i cant go fast D: why?! smh D; ive been learning the violín for 2yrs and still cant vibrato :(

  • Hi, Professor. I can do this vibrato, but I can only do it at a really fast speed. Is there a way I can learn to slow it down?

  • Hi MidniteHasStruck, that is a challenge, I know. We all have natural reflex speeds, some fast some slow. We have to work with what we have, but also try to vary the vibrato so it's not always the same. One thing to try is to just make the vibrato wider and see if that improves it. Try working with a metronome. Set it to 60 and count the number of oscillations per second. Then try to reduce them, perhaps just by one oscillation, then perhaps two. Again, a wider motion may help at first.

  • @professorV Thanks for replying, I really appreciate it!! I recently got a better teacher and she's working on it with me!

  • I'm and older adult student using retirement time to learn violin. and I'm having a blast. I already play piano and organ. I take lessons at a local music school but I like to use you to fill in the gaps with clarification. You're very very good. You make it easy to understand and fun. Thank You

  • i've been playing for 11 years and i still cant get the vabroto down ):

  • For everyone with issues... I am fairly new to the violin and i tried learning vibrato and could not do it at all. I watched a video of one person playing violin with vibrato and i noticed that they keep their fingers close together. I wasn't previously doing this and this is why I couldn't vibrato. Keeping your hand in a smaller type of more relaxed formation makes moving the wrist so much easier. I immediately was able to do it. Try this!

  • wow, i learned quite well with this vid. :) uhm.. does the violin shake even just a bit when you do the hand vibrato?? i'm practicing that vibrato and my violin keeps shaking. i hope i can do it right. :)

  • does this work on viola also

  • Very useful, thank you; I'm not there yet, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel... ;-)

  • Thanks for the videos! I've seen this video countless of times and it has helped me learn vibrato. Thanks again!

  • when I was in that guitar manner, it seems to be easy... but when I tried it in playing position, it's difficult that I couldn't help but move my arm... : ' (

  • Excelente!! Muchas gracias, Profesor! Desde Argentina agradezco sus lecciones.

  • Hello, Professor.....Perhaps, You don't know how many students you've made all over the world.......... I'm also the one of ur student who began his violin learning watching Your videos.............. That's why i m very grateful to you, Sir............

  • bahahahahahah :43 to :44

  • I Find This Very Useful. Thanks!!! :D

Hopefully I'll get better after a lot of practise

  • @professorv does practicing on a pencil help. As in use the pencil as a neck and in the middle of it flick my hand back and so forth?

  • Hi DOMozart, I have not tried that, but it I'll play with the idea. Thanks.

  • THAT GUY CAN TALK!

  • I have never... EVER in my life before... felt like my body just DOESN'T want to help me with something. My arm is literally fighting my efforts to do this. Talk about muscle training.

  • Hello sir. I'm able to obtain vibrato similar to yours; however, I've been experiencing a problem when I reach the lower portions of the bow. When the lowers portion run over the strings while I'm vibrating, the bow bounces up and down, creating a deleterious sound. Adding more pressure only seems to squelch the strings, and it seems I cannot stabalize the violin any more than I have(shoulder rest). What should I do?

  • Love it! Thank you very much, it helps me a lot :D

  • how long will it take to learn how to play the violin..if i have an instructor?

will i learn to play in summer?4 months?

  • THANK YOU!!!!!

  • thx man :)

  • This is really interesting! Thanks for posting!

  • The up bow thrusts are SO helpful! thank you so much!

  • For some reason this really aches my hand :/. And when i move back into first position to try it there i wobble my violin but when i hold it tighter i just can't do it. I think there's some sort of knack to it you have to figure out after lots of practising. Great video though, constantly practising these exercises around the house whilst watching TV etc. :)

  • Do you have a video on three and four-note chords? All I'm seeing on Youtube are tutorials for double stops, and I've screwed up on three-note chords so bad that my teacher actually abandoned me...

  • Hi Prof V, I was wondering if you have any tips for violinists with sweaty palms? It gets pretty hard sometimes to keep the finger in place when doing a vibrato as it can sometimes slide forward.

  • Rawr!! I can never get this right! I keep moving my arm!!! -:P

  • I would just like to compliment you on your excellent video. What you said about practicing it all day, I suggest you do it while watching TV. You'll be surprised how easy it is afterward.

  • hey i have a question do u slide your finger or just rock your finger tip??

  • why is it so hard.:(

  • I have a question: when I try to bow the violin while trying vibrato, the bow skips. What could I be doing wrong?

  • thank you so much!!! *huge help*

  • Thank you soooooooo much for this great lesson on vibrato!!!!!!!!!!

I'm taking baby steps like you say, and I have to be patient with myself.

You just gave me a real boost in excitement that I will eventually get to make those beautiful sounds if I don't give up.

  • I find my upper and lower arm feel tense while playing vibrato, is this normal?

  • ok!!! im gonna start VIBRATTING!

  • hello im an engineering student here in philippines, i love violin so i enroll in musical school. i have problem in holding violin by shoulder and chin rest. the violin slide down when i put my left hand in finger board. do i need to put strong pressure in my chin to hold the violin in place?? ?? please reply

  • i find it easier to start down bow...does that mean im doing something wrong?

  • I can't do vibrato to save my life

  • thank you!

  • Hi @professorV

I'm playing violin for 8 years and I'm having difficulties learning wrist vibrato (is that normal?). Is the arm vibrato worse than wrist vibrato? I am doing arm vibrato, but does it mean that my tehnique is bad?

    Thank you!

  • Thanks for your video

  • In other words, just jerk off a few guys and you're good to go.

  • UGH im stilll having problems doing it because my fining keeps slipping between notes!!!!! i still cant do it!!!!!!

  • umm Mr professor V does Your thumb remain low on the neck of the violin?

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhhh

  • I think you're a very good teacher

  • Ive been playing violin for a few years now in my school orchestra and Ive been trying to learn vibrato but my teachers instruction never really connected with me. This video has helped me so much! The little bursts are very helpful. Thanks!

  • You, are a fucking legend.

    Marry me?

    hahaha, great video's- really helped!

  • Hi @professorV, does your thumb move when you are vibrating? Or does it stay still?

  • Hi starbucksmaniaclol , the thumb does not slide up and down the neck, but remains in one place.

  • @professorV Yes hello Sir...When staring i find it easier to go down bow...Does that mean im doing something wrong? Thank you...

  • Your smile really creeped me out

  • I played violin to Grade I when I was a little kid but dropped it soon afterwards. I'm, now 33 and have just bought a used violin and instruction book/CD off eBay - is it really feasible for me to re-learn and progress using books and Youtube videos, or am I wasting my time?

  • Hi alexmc69, I tell everyone to find a teacher. Use videos, method books, etc. to supplement your education.

  • @professorV thanks for the advice...

  • @alexmc69 I had kids in my 40s and when I was 48 my one child started leaning the violin and I started too. We learn using the Suzuki method. I have a teacher and go for a lesson every week. I am 55 now and have just recorded Bourree by Bach (search Marieta) for my book 3 graduation. I urge you to continue learning the violin and to get a teacher. The way time flies it is hard to be motivated to practice if you don't have a lesson to keep reminding you need lots of willpower. Have fun.

  • HI! THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEo......it really helps me a lot but I will keep on practicng...altgough I have a very stiff hands....I will make sure I will learn how to play vibrato wuhu!

  • Thank you for so clearly breaking down the steps. You are an excellent and clear teacher!

  • How can i do it without shaking my arm?

  • 2:27 I got flipped off :(

  • I can easily do that .

    ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • ive been playing violin for 10 years and i still suck at vibrato. i just suck at playing the violin i guess :P

  • MrSmurfdeNoodles it takes time to actually do it!!!

  • i cant do it... pooo!

  • Why can't you move the finger from side to side?

  • WHY CAN'T I DO THIS :((???

  • Oh my god i love you (:

  • From your site in the playlist section, the vibrato playlist link takes you to the tuning playlist.

  • I cant make my finger work like that so I've been doing a light hammer on and off vibrato, this may not be as easy with a very light action violin.

  • Thank you so much! I was never taught properly and out of frustration I quit violin for a few years. Now I am retrying and this video helped alot!

  • omg i did on my first try wow cool

  • I'm a cellist and am attempting to transfer my cello abilities onto the violin. I'm finding that I should just start from square one. These videos are awesome and I'm so glad I found ProfessorV. I'm at work right now driving my co-workers nuts by attempting to vibrate on pencils and rulers. I can't wait to get home and try this out on my fiddle! Thank you so much for posting these videos, @professorv!!!

  • @valyazhnaya learning Vibrato on the Cello is much easier

than on the violin,i think the violins little mass makes it difficult, that's why we use the wall to

exercise to keep the violin at our chin.

  • Whenever I place my 2nd finger on the A sting, and I pull my first knuckle down, and I always touch the E string. Is that suppose to happen???

  • very helpful, thanks!

  • Vibrato... for a year?! What the--

  • this is the best video i've found for vibrato, but i still can put pressure on my fingers! and can move my forearm/wrist perfectlly fine, its just the finger!!

  • is too hard do the vibrato jeje

  • :( I want a violin like yours! Mines from Argos... *sigh*

  • I cannot thank you enough! I learned vibrato from you and I've only been playing for one month! I know I shouldn't even be touching up on vibrato yet but I was impatient. There's a lot I have to work on but overall I LOVE playing violin. Thank you! :)

  • pedo smile at the start :L

  • Is that a Glasser bow?

  • thanks alot i can sorta vibrato now well atleast it sounds like i can it doesnt sound as good as yours but i mean i can hear it, somethin tells me its alot easier on cello tho:/

  • Kudos, excellent lesson! :D

  • Thanks for the lesson professor.

  • That's a super nice violin!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hello professorV, I have managed to get a bit of vibrato out of my violin (thanks to your video). But the problem is when I roll my finger back and forward, and adding pressure to play, if I do it too many times I get a string indent in my finger which gets pretty sore after a while. Would it be because I am doing the finger movement wrong or would it be too much pressure on the string?

    Regards,

    Scott

  • so if i am a junior in highschool and have been playing for about 3 months my chances of learning this are......?

  • @rkedwards411 Depends on the time you put into it. Practice every day, even if you're not using the violin. Use your desk and other surface tops.

  • Vibrato is so hard :c I just started playing and mine sounds terrible!

  • I USED TO PLAY THE VIOLIN AT MY OLD SCHOOL AND I WAS AWSOME

  • But what about Itzak Perlman? I saw a video of him playing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D and his pinky was coming up a lot

  • Hey @professorV, I try to practice as you instruct. When you do 2nd finger and above, is the first finger resting on the wood ?
