I did a lot of miles in one just like this. Pancaked 6-71 Detroit with a Turbo-charger and a straight 5 speed Transmission. I saw a few in my travels that had 10-speed Fuller Road-Ranger's in them and a few with Allison Automatics as well.
My entire route was on a large hill that sloped up off the valley floor, so I got to use the only bus in the fleet with a turbo. It's too bad that Crown isn't still in business. They built the best coach on the road.

crowns came w 3 engines: Hall-Scott gas i6 horizontals ,,cummines 743/ 855 diesel NHH (80' ) , mostly 220 -some 262 w turbo, rare -300 , newer, detroit diesels, 425 (6-71) some w turbos.... all were 90 or 80 degree horizontal (pancake) engines 'cause they were mounted under the floor ,in the middle of the chassis. very rare crowns had a rear engine , not schoolies...
Definitely Detroit Diesel. This bus looks and sounds like an early 1970s model. I don't think Crown put regular gas engines in their buses after the 1950s. I have heard gas engines in them... very different sounding.
we have plenty of genesis and international buses in the school district where i go to school and they are good buses we have some new thomas saf t liner C2's and they are junk the transit version (flat in the front are junk most of the time also i know another bus in my school district that blew up because the bus mechanics left the engine coolant cap loose and its an international a good bus but its the mechanics fault that happened
I remember when i was like 10 years old, that was in 2000, i lived in Washington State and my school had an old classic like that and it was my bus ride to school. I loved riding that bus.
I remember as a little one in the early 1990's when I was in school I rode on several of those old Crowns of the Riverside County School district in California.A couple of them were tandem axle models that I remember.
I know what you taking about. LAUSD had Cummins powered 40 ft ten wheel Crown Supercoaches with roof racks. There one operateing in the Westchester area in 1992-1993. When it toke off you could see a wall of smoke on Manchester Blvd, flowed by that beastly sound coming from it Cummings engine. Those was my favorite buses in LAUSD fleet.
LAUSD 35 ft Supercoaches had Detroit 6-71 and there 40 ft Supercoach II had Detroit 6v92.
My dad's buddy has a '72 Crown with a 220 Cummins, man does that thing ever smoke! oncoming traffic has actually stopped because they couldn't see the road. I'm a detroit fan myself.
I rode Embree bus 333 in Pasadena for 5 years to at least 3 schools (Allendale Primary, Jackson Elementary, Allendale again, after it was converted to K-6, and Wilson Middle) between 1980 and 1985. Bus 333 always had the reputation for being the loudest. (the kids on the bus that is, not the engine) The best days were when the bus broke down, because it was an excuse to get to school late or skip school altogether. However, they hardly ever broke down. They were workhorses!
I rode on various types of these Crown beauties while going to school in Pasadena, CA in the '70's and '80's. They were unique...sounds, smells, the ride. The are the real school buses. It's a shame they are starting to disappear now. It great to see them restored and operating still. Next to the sound, My favorite thing about them were those huge white steering wheels. You just knew you going somewhere in a Crown.

i take that this is a gas engine not diesel
schindlerman96 2 years ago
Im not so sure about that. It doesn't sound like a gas engine so it may be an 8.2 detroit diesel.

beautiful bus, but why does it need a tandem in the rear?
mtbwarrior 3 years ago
An andem rear axles..40 feet..the ultimate Crown. Now all we need is triple rear wheels.
