Our son was adopted from Semey and I have been there twice to that orphanage. He is perfectly healthy, but there are many children with birth defects still there. They will live with that curse for many years.
The funniest thing is that while americans are looking down at USSR for doing this to the Kazakh people, Russia is laughing at USA's irony when it comes to causing birth defects etc. since USA dropped 12,000,000 US gallons of the herbecide "Agent Orange" in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. 4.8 million Vietnamese people were exposed to Agent Orange, resulting in 400,000 deaths and disabilities, and 500,000 children born with birth defects. Way to go guys, irony is a funny thing right?
it's really sad to see and the worst things is government doesnt give a shit ...the help this people get is minimal they are not so interesting anymore they were used for president'd purposes when needed our country's biggest problem is corruption i would execute all of them for this i love my country to bits but it really is primitive in terms of caring for people...just few weathy fuckers getting millions and billions
Mary, check out the downwinders. Also, we blasted the heck out of the Marshall Islands. Those people are suffering too. But Semey had it the worst. Simply awful.
one sided propaganda cnn garbage its not that bad .....almost the whole population of semey have no birth defects and their cancer rates are no higher than in western europe..........yuka flats in nevda had jst as many tests
umm it seems to me some of you morons forget that the USA tested on its own soil too! and underground. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!!
That is absolutely disgusting! I'm so sick of this war crap. Everybody knows that wars aren't the way to solve anything. And everybody knows that if Russia and the USA begin a war, we will all be affected by nuclear winter. Global warming isn't the only thing threatening the globe.
Journalists will tell anything to sell their stories even if not scientifically solid... the theme is again on the raise world-wide due to the renaissance of nuclear energy and it's role as an alternative source not contributing to climate change and global warming. it all gets political at the end of the day and there are parties interested in spreading radio-phobia in general public...
In the eastern Kazakhstan near to this area, there is a chemical manufactory which produces toxic waste polluting the e entire area with heavy metals, etc. it is not yet clear what causes those malformations. They are seen at the same rate all over former Soviet countries... there were no congenital malformations reported in Japanese atomic bomb survivors, nor in Chernobyl. So, the only true answer is -- we don't have an answer. it may be due to radiation but we cannot be sure.
I am from Semey and sympathize my country fellows. I also used to blame everything on the "polygon". Only after I had a chance to study radiation biology and genetics in the west, i came to realize that so far, there is no strong scientific evidence supporting the theory of radiation causing congenital malformations... these conditions may be caused by many other factors, such as chemical industry waste for instance.
i also read that at this place many man are impotent and they commited suicide aven when they are teens. this is evil government should compensate them some way
If this happened in America we'd hear about it every day. And if we didn't hear it from U.S. public, you'd hear about from Stalin apologists
