No gun expert, but this powerful rifle looks awesome, and if i start a collection, i'd like to have one. Still the cartridge capacity of only 20 rounds bothers me. US army had to up their m16 mags to 30 rounds to keep up in the cold war, and this rifle still only 20? I still like it, but doesn't it mean you have to reload more often than AK47 users? Unless there's drums or a 30 round clip available for the FAL...

I was sad when the Irish army took away my mk iv lee Enfield and gave me an FN. But not for long. The FN was a mans rifle. I liked it because it made me look like I was a real marksman and got me into the all army individual rifle comp. small framed townies and the newly recruited females just couldn't handle it. The later edition of steyrs levelled out that imbalance.

After reading of the FALs' use by Mike Hoares' mercenaries in Congo during the 1960s' crises, I took a liking to this gun. It is easy to mantain, accurate and can be used in a wide variety of situations. I would have placed it higher up in the list.

@esh325 I don't think they based it on "being American" even the modern weaponry the US uses many are foreign designs.I think they based it on the M-14 familiarity with previous issued rifles.The US military is conservative thats why they still haven't replaced the basic Ar-15 design.Soldiers know the rifles in and out and what to expect and officers don't trust the infantry soldier to figure out how to use a totally new designed rifle.The FN was a complex piece and maintenance intensive.

@Durendal33 But for the main infantry rifle it would look bad to use a foreign rifle. I don't know if they care so much about other weapons being foreign. The M14 would fit closer to complex and maintenance then the FAL would. I have both. For the M1A, you need two tools just to take the piston off. One so you don't bend the piston, and the other to unscrew the nutt. The gas port inside can also be very easily damaged if you aren't very careful.

It's a pity FN didn't continue to develop their original FAL for an intermediate cartridge. The original cartridge, as i understand it, was the German 7.92 kurtz. It should have been easy to go to 7.62x39 or the .280 Enfield. It might have given the ubiquitous AK a run for the 3rd world market. And been a better full auto.

I used a Fal and a British SLR for 15 months frontline . I wish I could have either one back . Our squad never had full auto but the rifle worked out well for us . A lot of ammo is wasted on full auto .Though Full auto will definitely keep heads down in a firefight .

My Dad was qualified with the M1 Garand and the FN Fal. He told me that he barely noticed a difference in handling and aim with these rifles(Could be a personal opinion). He also said that these where the best rifles he had used.
