  • Nice

  • O_o can you repeat please ???

  • My Opinion: Slapping isn't the coolest thing you can do with a bass. pino anyone?

  • @Jack458111 Agreed, he's awesome tho... but not to fond of slapping either :P

  • I think it's great that Brian is willing to share his bass playing knowledge with other people:)

  • I wish he re-introduced his lesson video. What he says is true. Don't FIGHT with your instrument!! Play relaxed. My bass instructor told me in order to playing fast, learn it "slowly" first and build it from there. Great video clip.

  • Superb solo, my jazz teachers always taught me to provide my own own root while soloing(on the strong beats). However it is my belief that the keyboard and guitar should lay back in the low register and let that bass fly! If the ryhthm secton can't help it's own then what?!

  • i'm not used to comment on youtube but this guy got some brilliant bass sound and his technic is just amazing. True PRO

  • My two cents: Brian makes several excellent suggestions, but perhaps doesn't "hammer them home". One: if you allow your right forearm to rotate on an axis you end up with a smooth, fast slap technique. Two: letting your left hand do some of the percussive work can make things sound a lot faster with much less effort. Try practicing drum rudiments with the RH thumb and LH fingers (slapping down on the fingerboard) working opposite each other like drumsticks, and you'll see what I mean.

  • That lesson wasn't very helpful. He told us to use gravity, our ring fingers for plucking, and then proceeded to just show off.

I would have liked to know some of those slapping techniques.

  • Bromberg is god.

Every note is spot on. I cant think of any other bassplayer who hits every note he intends to. ..................................ok Michael Manring is god too.

  • Bromberg is a total clown. A terrible musician. So, Brian - let me get this straight: I don't have to fight my instrument to groove?!? WOW!!! Thanks for such unbelievable insight!!! Here I was all these years thinking the key was to FIGHT my instrument!! Now I know the truth thanks to "genius" Brian Bromberg.

Take a look at Bromberg's recent credits on allmusic.com. Basically, the guy plays with Michael Buble. That's the level of creative musician that calls Bromberg, and that says it all.

  • @gretschjazzer I agree, his "insight" wasn't exactly helpful... if you slap, how do you go about doing it?

  • удивительно хорошо Карвин звучит....

  • I've seen this relaxation stuff been "promoted" in more videos , Gary Willis for instance also is a strong believer in not overstressing the muscles in your hands and ultimately your arms and shoulders. At some point, all the greats develop similar techniques. Brian Bromberg certainly is one of them. Not all people like his, sometimes guitar like playing, but that is the price you have to pay for being a bass genius i guess.

  • I saw him today and got two of his albums signed by him holy crap he is good

  • I love his philosophy on playing bass - "the kay is relaxation". Damn straight.

  • He needs to collaborate with Norman Brown.

  • He's a complete badass.

  • one of the most brilliant bass player in he world... love this player

  • This bass sound is so f***ing PHAT!!! LOVE IT!!!

  • What's the name of that song he plays at the end?

  • @IVAmenhotep It's called Bass Face

  • Comment removed

  • badass! thanks for posting!

  • Tsssss

  • that Mr. plays? or plays me the head

  • He amazes me with his technique and he is an innovator, but he does nothing for me musically.

  • I noticed as well, (and I've only been playing bass for 4 years) Most average bass players let their bass play them instead of them playing their bass. There is lots of things you can adjust to make your bass work for you instead of wasting too much effort for too little reward by fighting with your bass.

  • I heard a redio commentator mention that Brian plays a piccolo bass. OMG! I learned something today.

  • 1:34 gave me an almost-seizure. Ah man. I love Bromberg.

  • @andyfen0

Brian is the Man!both on electic and accoustic basses!

  • @andyfen0 that lick was just incredible man

  • oh shit...

  • Woaaah, 5:41-4:44

  • When he says he doesn't use his index finger because its the axis of rotation between the thumb and middle, he means he used his thumb for slapping and middle finger for popping right, anyone? I can't really tell from watching him.

  • @Yimmery Yes that is what he is saying. I assume he does this to economize on motion though there certainly isn't a requirement to slap in this fashion. Obviously, he gets a lot out of his approach so there is probably something to be learned here.

  • @bowiemott Cool thanks. It seems logical, his hand just looks like its tilting / rotating with his fingers still. Seems like he's using the higher strings for popping and lower ones for slapping, I think if he was doing a riff where he slaps and pops on strings right next to each other it might be better to use the index. I think I'll try using the middle finger for popping strings further away from the slapped string from now on.

  • @Yimmery Well once again I think you have it. Thumb for lower strings, index for

higher strings with it being more common to skip a string in between. As you point out were you to slap on the E string and pop on the A then his approach might not seem the best but then again *most* of the time this wouldn't be happening. It would be more common to pop on the D string when slappng on the E string. No requirement to do so of course.

  • Ive seen alot of great bass players in my day but......Brian is amazing!

  • Plays something crazy; it's about relaxing, plays something else crazy. He does this like five times. Great bassist.

  • I've seen him live at the berks jazz fest (fell in love) and then on march 27th, 09 in Annapoulis, MD....he's the best!!!! Got a signed poster...There's none other like him!!! Amazing!!!!!

  • so sick - grooves like hell and the technique is killing me x) awesome dude - thx for the video

  • WHYYYYY??? ugh!

  • Saw him at the temecula jazz fest and this guy can play! His speed is phenomenal!

  • I can't help but smile when I see this guy. As a bass player, I recommend Brian as a #1 influence for any style bassist. He is versital beyond any other bass player.

  • @pchelpdave

I totally agree with you @pchelpdave!thanks for viewing...

  • @pchelpdave Fantástico!!!

  • @pchelpdave I didn't get what you were saying about smiling thinking about what he was saying and teaching... i listened and watched him play... and I found myself smiling by the end of the vid! lol! New fan of Bromberg right here! xD

  • @pchelpdave you would like Jeff Schmidt.

  • @pchelpdave I think its between him and Scott Ambush. Both similar styles and from what ive seen pretty equal in there techniques.

  • Incroyable ! Quel son, quelle technique, quelle démonstration ! Super.

  • süper saund

    fodera machine

  • hey guys, my name is josh, and im a 16 year old bassist. i would really appreciate it if you guys checked out my bands videos on my page and left feedback. we've been playing for about 3 years together. thanks!

  • sorry for the mistake

  • I love this bass... best present i ever got

  • I gotta get 1:34 if it takes me yrs lol. OMG. Brian is a beast.

  • Jeezz.. The one and only Brian Bromberg..

  • i agree 100%!!!thanks for visiting drumseigo.

  • @virgilioherrera patitucci is the god

  • uuuuhhh......uuuhhhh...... I GIVE UP!!!!!!!!!

  • it's from "choices" album

i think his bass is a "peavey"

  • @sebhartke That bass is his DEAN signature,he has a couple of them.

  • @pabliyin29 thank God he switched to Carvin. Dean sucks!!!

  • I'm playng with him at the Clearwater Jazz festival tomorrow..Its gonna be so much fun!!!!

  • shit thats really crazy!!!!

  • Does anybody know what bass he's using?

  • I met him early on in his career and asked him...I forgot the exact name, but his first ones (basses loaded era) I believe were made by Gibson. Now I've seen him with Peavey, Dean, etc.

  • Bob Mick is a custom builder here in Tucson (Brian's hometown)

He's made a lot of basses for Brian and I believe that's what he's using in this video.

  • Also, just to see what difference (if any) equipment makes - one of these days I really want to see a top player use really cheap equipment and instrument. I KNOW proper technique and practice are crucial, but Imho the less work you have to do to just produce good sound, the easier it may be to learn.

  • Thad Tribbett. He uses a 4 string fender precision lyte. Crazy what he gets out of that thing

  • So much for having to stick the bass under your armpit ala Mr Mark King to slap fast. Whatever works for YOUR body I always say.

  • Shitting Awsome !!!

    Nough Respect !!

  • hahahaha this was absolutely fantastic... hahahaha absolutely, I just recently became aware of Brian Bromberg, and an now greatly impressed...

  • this is from his album 'Brian Bromberg' released 1993. it's the 2nd song on this cd called 'Brother'.

thanks man for sharing that lick ...

  • anyone know the song brian is playing to in the middle/end of the video?

  • Comment removed

  • The song is called "Bass Face"

  • Nice Groove..nice Playing

    Nice :)

  • perfect

    cleaned sound

    nice musical feeling

  • Good bye tension/pain hello more slap and pop lines

Poping with the middle fingers feels so much more natural than poping with my index finger

    thanks

  • i wonder how much this guy makes just playing the bass...

  • Brian Bromberg can be considered the best doubler on the planet right now. This video definitely shows this guys virtuosity even on the electric. Who needs double thumping when you can play like this! Simply amazing! Thanks for posting Gigi!

  • thanks Joven.ikaw pala...oo nga eh-nakaka-lasing nga ang galeng nya.

  • I think i just shit my fucking pants...

  • what bass is that?

  • dean

  • Brian is incredible! I went to UA in 1974 and remember his brother David telling me that his younger brother was getting good on drums. David was real nice in showing me things on the drumset.

Brian has a real nice touch and his playing makes sense. David's touch was real nice too - he didn't just hit the drums any ol' way, it was always with a nice touch. I read that their Dad was a good drummer, funny how music runs in families.

  • I'd say my favorite part was around 3:28 with the opening/recording. Great! Zander is the best-

  • brilliant.

  • thanks for dropping by Zander...yeah super brilliant!
