Tattooing is a technical art; in that you must have artistic tendencies with mechanical know-how. Example: A painter knows his brushes, the techniques that can be used with a single brush to get several effects and most importantly he knows how to "TUNE" his brushes. A tattoo machine, it's NOT A GUN, must be tuned through its throw, hit, variable volts and depth. Mr. Barth only touches on the depth here. So understand to those with the questions that need answered, these are advanced techniques.
If you don't have you foundation down, line work, then the rest will look like crap anyway. Stay with small tattoos until you can tackle them easily and then stay with them for a while longer; the confident ego causes most to go too fast too soon. AND GO SLOW!!! It's better to slow down than go fast, tear up the skin and scar someone because you don't understand what you are doing wrong. If you slow down and something is not going right, start with your needles: are they barbed, are you too
deep or too shallow (which is debatable but valid to beginners more than advanced tattooers)? If your needles are OK, then how is your technique? Are you moving too fast, too slow, using the wrong configuration? There are too many things to list and I had to pay my dues to learn them so pay your dues by learning the basics first before you learn to break them. ;)
I thank you for the information, I have been staying away from the grey wash tattooing but playing with it more and more. I have found that when trying to do soft shading it leaves little dark swishes......Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong and how I might be able to fix this....
shops in no way legitomizes an artists...i learned to tattoo on my own..and ran into shoo artists making mistakes or bad habita i didnt do..and vice versa..shops turning out better artists is bullshit..
im an owner/artist and im still having trouble with long stretches of soft smoth shade!!!! persay a a greywash tribal. something lite and smooth!!! my shit looks a lil scratchy.....please help!!!! lol
Awesome Tutorial dude!!! I've been doin tats for 10 years now & been very passive about doin portraits but jus from this tutorial alone i feel more confident..lol. Thanks!
what voltage do u run shading, my issues are my style looks like sullen type of work, but i want to clean it up, im scared of going to dark, an ive been told by all my artists i need to go darker. Ive learned an apprenticed with lowrider an i havent found my confort zone when shading like that, ive ran my machine at 6, ive ran it at 8.5. 9.0 an have been told the fast it runs the smoother it looks so it wont be choppy, but i dont have a heavy hand at all, what should i do for a good voltage
You have helped me learn how to do this. Thank you for sharing your expirence thru this video. Not many people in my area will talk to you about anything tattoo related.
it would be even more helpful to me to actual see you and how you choose to attack a job insteps instructions are nice but when some one of your calibur shows you one way on how it is done correctly combined is priceless i sit it a position where i am ready and willing to up my level and portraits my problem is i tend to fall back on my original style of highly detail drawings with extreme realism want complete realism would appreciate a strong layout procedure from a free style stand point.
thank you for taking the time to make this video, there is a unspoken rule between artist not to show them your techniques and to let others learn by trail and error having to earn a name for them selves and not profit off of another artist's experience. Many who show you tips are just that tips and not full detail that you are stuck having to pay for and receiving a poor video. I have never purchased one but know of many who have. I am self taught and proud of my achievements.
Great video and personally I'd like to say that if your trying to learn how to tattoo from YouTube it's not gunna work, when I first started tattoing I just used YouTube to update myself on how to keep sanitized and clean for tattoing, my best advice is go get a good amount of tattoos at your local shop and realy observe and ask questions, here in L.A. No one wants to aprentice you so that's how I learned the basics dudes shit ur paying hundreds for your tattoo your artist won't mind explaining
man you are a genius seriously I would love to work with you just to learn as much as I possibly could.Very nice piece of art I think you and devries are my favorites well paul booth as well I hope to meet you one day and learn from you
For those complaining. This is not a how to tattoo video. You should have a firm grasp on tattooing from a proper Apprenticeship. He is simply giving tips to those who have a good understanding of tattooing and to perhaps develop or learn a new trick or two along the way. Do not watch videos on youtube or anywhere else to learn to tattoo. Get an apprenticeship learn all you can. Then talk with other artists and work out Your own personal techniques. Great vid though! I like the eyes last new tip
much prefer a proper VIDEO tutorial instead of all this waffling shit!......please...stop uploading these useless videos....yes they help a little but not that much..no real substance...we may as well listen to Leonardo da Vinci talk about how he painted the mona lisa...what we need are real WIP vids and needle configs and ink manufactures and greywash dilutions used etc etc..not just this ..'i did this to here and that to this bit useless BS'.....
Very informative! Thanks so much for putting this vid on! I've been tattooing for 7 years and have been shying away from doing portraits, but you answered ALOT of the questions I've had, great idea about doing the eyes last! I can't wait to try a few of your techniques out!
When you say that we must work with the needle as a feather....some people say that if the needle goes to much on the surface the ink can fade very fast bluring the image...is it true? Many thanks again!!!
i love to get more insight on how others do work, i love the fact you said that about doing the eyes last, makes prefect sence, thanks man look forward to seeing more of your ideas, i have a feeling the next time i shoot a portrait, which is tomorrow, lol, ill do even better than i normaly do, thanks again...
These are the same techniques that can be applied to almost all mediums including graphite and paint--work general to specific. I love the work but does the customer lose the "washed" areas more quickly than the more solid areas? What can I do to retain the greys areas as permanant as the solid areas?
awesome i'm watching high dollar videos about landing portraits and this is way easier to grasp and just seems straight forward there was no jumbling of words and hey i mixed these hundred colors to produce this color i would love to spend a day with this man lol sounds weird but its rarely i find spending time with other artist that i can walk away with a fresh breath of air and new ideas thanks for this post so much. josh b.
Hi like others, thanks for this video. I´m new in this fantastic world, can you explain to me what is a grey solution? Once again thank for the help!!!
I have been tattooing for 3 months now and I have done 120 tattoos. I am already doing portraits now .i have been drawing for 30 years ihave used my skills and transfered them to the tattooing medium and it is now my life and passion. Thanx for the help. I asked joshua carlton to help me but I was turned away so for now this video and others like it will help me succeed in my lifes goal to be a famous tattoo artist
Sir, thank you so much for your generosity. I am very grateful for this. I would like to know about working in sepia tones. Is this something you might consider speaking about Sir? Thank you again for your generosity.
Sounds great man.. I work out of a shop in Philadelphia and I've been drawing/painting portraits all my life. I was a bit apprehensive to attempt a portrait with my tattooing, but when you break it down like an art instructor it puts me more at ease. I'm ready to get it done now!
cool... helps me a lot... I'm a beginner in tattooing... just wanna asked if what did you used in the eyes.. is it a liner only??? just always having trouble in the eyes don't know what to use if liner or shader only... hope you can answer my question... thanks for the nice vidz.... the best....
God dam this is amazing! Mario is beyond talented... I just found this video and I am blown away and just fired up and motivated to apply (try)these philosophies that Mario is presenting... This video is amazing!
Thanks Mario its great to be spoken to like a human and not a lower form of life just because some of us are not as advanced as others. If this is the minimum to have a shop i have a longggggg ways to go! Im still learning to line and shade like most street shops do. How did you start and who did you practice new techniques on because i have enough friends I have to fix already!!! i have found no substitute for real skin and tattooing yourself is just not the same as working on someone :) Danke!
i have been doing tattoos for the last 8 months and i take tips from youtube tattooest and you give one of the most detailed videos iv saw . i would like to know how to properly adjust your power supply for shading portraits . thanks great video
@scarracsfrog , ok, your lame, bla bla bla,, what do say thats allways the same ? People
Talk shit i talk back, spell ? I think u know i ment tattoo, i have a iphone i post from it so i type fast and dont care and some times hit wrong buttons, im in collage now so im far from dumb , u speak of shit u know nota about, give up kid
@pkrwood12 Learn how to read you illiterate bastard , get a life and learn to read !!!! Your so dumbfounded with your mental dysfunction you have acquired over the years, i can type 120 words a minute so sorry if i write short to fit the substantial amount of words i need to speak, who are you ? I can see your bored with no life, and you know nothing about tattooing , now you get no information from anyone you peon !!!!
@scarracsfrog You are not even up to were the people i talk to and argue styles and machine tunning with , u will get no respond from me fag, post your scabbed up scar tattoos hahahah your ink dont stay hahahaha, yet u open your mouth, throw your machines away, wait till i post my upcomming work fag, your not skilled like tattootraining or anyone else i argue with, so dont speak ,ur words r nothing u cant tayyoo
@scarracsfrog Hahahahaha bla bla bla , your ink dont stay in hahaha u use a luggage scale hahaha you suck u faggot!!!! And have the nerve to talk shit , you thoughts on anything dont mean SHIT!!!! You cant tattoo hahahaahah, dont hate on my work like a pussy little girl cause u read about me on shit and dont like it, nothing wrong with my work, not your taste WHO cares , i tattoo what people want and it comes out exact as the picture, thats y i tattoo n u scab
like he was saying about staying on the surface , working on the tips so you dont over puncture it , voltage can also work for you by keeping it under control, start at 3 volts and turn it up until just before the armature bar taps the front coil , use 7 mag long taper #10 or 8 needle , you can always add you cant subtract the ink
@headshothorror4488 lmao uh oh i know this might be hard for you to do and all since you're so gay but i need for you to get the fuck off of my dick lol you talk like you actually know me or something loser!! make sure to wear your helmet and knee pads fuckin retard
@92reshaun this headshit whor guy is a troll. the first unteachable person i ever came across, he has been playing around for 9 months and talks shit like he is the best thing around ,
hey mario, thanx - i really like your style - it´s close to my view of the things... thanx for the good tips and also inspiring me to get a better artist... hope to see ya anywhere. greets joerg
It's so refreshing to actually a see renowned artist giving a free instructional video. I don't understand why most artists today are so reclusive about the art. As if it's some mystic cult you can only join if your born under a blue moon on a Tuesday while a cow is dancing to techno in a tree.
@JonathanCbush its a old school mind set , they guard what they know like its a special formula , when really there isnt . this is what they really dont want people to know .
Nowadays artists are so reserved with there secrets &" tips" & the only way they'll tell u anything is if u pay 80 bucks for an instructional dvd. or an apprenticeship that could last for years.
@JonathanCbush thats because there are so many fuck heads out there that dont give a fuck about the art they want to tattoo to be flashy and make money so alot of real artist are reserved on what took them years and years of practice to master to just give it away to some dumb fuck whos too lazy to learn. i guarantee you wont learn shit from this video if you havent already been taking tattooing serious and already put in countless hours
@JonathanCbush To answer your question - 'Free' how-to tattoo videos encourage the home scratchers with cheap equipment who do not have the training necessary to prevent the spread of bloodborne pathogens.
@joshualabello The videos may also encourage people who are working on practice skins and grapefruits to get their portfolio together and go to a reputable tattoo shop and obtain an apprenticeship. The bloodborne pathogen issue is covered extensively on the internet and if you are looking for info on how to tattoo you can't help but run across it. Just an fyi...
@30ledrobster - I would argue that people should not be even running a machine, on practice skins or otherwise, UNTIL they've obtained an official apprenticeship - otherwise they'll be developing bad habits that can actually prevent them from getting in to a shop. The 'portfolio' they should be working on should be drawings and paintings to show the shops that they have art skills and are worth being trained to do it on skin.
I have to agree with you on the bad habits part. However, apprenticeships -as you probably already know- are few and far between and they gotta start somewhere. Artists are artists in everything they, I believe in encouraging artists to create. Artists have a tendency to break the rules but tattooing isn't magic it's physics and can be learned and understood fairly easily. Many bad habits can be picked up in shops as well, as there are more lousy tattoo artists out there than good. ;)
@joshualabello Sorry...my writing was a bit ambiguous I did mean a drawing portfolio not practice skins and rotten grapefruit. :) There's just so much you can say without using up all your characters...well that is IF -like us- you are having an intelligent discussion and not acting like an ass. XD
@30ledrobster - I wish there was a tattooing guild here in the States to do some quality control... because most of the shops (and this sort of supports your statement) around me were started by people who learned in their houses (or on YouTube - LOL) and are just awful. If there was some kind of rating system, people would be better informed when looking for an apprenticeship (or just for a tattoo!)
Now THAT my friend is a great idea, sort of a consumer reports for the tattooing world. Quoting the post above "and are just awful" Some ppl that were self taught turned out terrific I met a few in prison. Or type Godoy Tattoo or Jeff Gogue in google both self taught. Nobody taught that first caveman to tattoo. Tattoos can be removed today & if someone gets a bad one it's really on them for not doin the research or cheaping out. There are just too many myths about this simple art.
@30ledrobster - It IS on them if they don't do the research, but the problem that I see here in rural Ohio is that many people don't care about quality; they just want to get 'inked'. So they parade around Wal*Mart with homemade tattoos and do the tattoo world an injustice by being ill-representations. That's bad for my business... (and... sort of good in a way: cover-ups is a huge part of my business.)
Hells yeah! I have a cover up on my left forearm of a HUGE pot leaf I tattooed on myself when I was 14. My coverup goes from my wrist to my elbow and I think it has just about every color that "unique art supplies" had at that time. Someone bought out that company years ago, can't remember who. Wal*Mart ha ha that's great. You mark my words, before this is all over there will be a Wal*Mart somewhere with a tattoo shop in it. I really love Mario's work, did you see the eagle thing?
Thanks for the video. The days of tattoo secrets are fast coming to a close, because of the fame of money and t.v. We used to be the outcasts, and now everyone wants to have what they think they can attain without truly respecting the craft. So many new comers are just looking at what others did and then they take the next inevitable step without gaining the respect of attaining such power.
One guy once asked me to cover-up an entire back piece some aspiring artist was sure he could perform. Pain in the butt to achieve this. A few artists are selling these secrets for hundreds of dollars.
i just wanted to say thank you for sharing your techniques with the rest of us amatures lol..... i am doin some research before i do my first portrait and that was soooooo helpful ty bud.......
this is a good video best one ive seen the other ones people dont wana fucking teach they wana make tattooing a dam monopoly....... thanks for the tips
ok first off im pretty sure it's spelled "idiot".. and for you imformation im a tattoo artist in my own shop.. specializing in portraits etc etc.. but just because im good at them doesn't mean i can't get better so i just thought that since the guy is a serious legend that i could get some good tips from him.. lol go get a sense of humor guy geezz!!!! notice your the only one that got offended by what i said.. XD.. OH AND BY THE WAY.. HE WAS GETTING THE DOME IN THIS VIDEO
@92reshaun First of all you are giving the dome while watching this if you realy think that , grow up and get a life ,, by the way you are no tattoo artist why lie like that , why are you watching this if you work in a shop , well they are hacks besides this guy and a few more anyway so i can see "shop" people searching here to learn they do buy machines tunned and admitt it and say they dont tune em them
self witch is really sad , no disrespect but you had to go on about it again
Thank you Mario. Nobody ever wants to help for free. Nobody wants to give up their secrets especialy for free .Thank you for being a Badass artist & thank you for being cool enough & secure enough in you artistry to share your techniques. Please keep them coming.
@ 92reshaun ,,,,,,,, you are a fucking ediot , grow up dumbass and learn somthing or just stop now, cant watch a video n buy a machine and think you can tattoo lol go ahead try it on yourself lol just saying a lil respect for the man teaching a skill
Gracias!!!

Thanks Mario its great to be spoken to like a human and not a lower form of life just because some of us are not as advanced as others. If this is the minimum to have a shop i have a longggggg ways to go! Im still learning to line and shade like most street shops do. How did you start and who did you practice new techniques on because i have enough friends I have to fix already!!! i have found no substitute for real skin and tattooing yourself is just not the same as working on someone :) Danke!

like he was saying about staying on the surface , working on the tips so you dont over puncture it , voltage can also work for you by keeping it under control, start at 3 volts and turn it up until just before the armature bar taps the front coil , use 7 mag long taper #10 or 8 needle , you can always add you cant subtract the ink

It's so refreshing to actually a see renowned artist giving a free instructional video. I don't understand why most artists today are so reclusive about the art. As if it's some mystic cult you can only join if your born under a blue moon on a Tuesday while a cow is dancing to techno in a tree.
JonathanCbush 1 year ago 31
@JonathanCbush its a old school mind set , they guard what they know like its a special formula , when really there isnt . this is what they really dont want people to know .
TATTOOTRAINING 1 year ago
@JonathanCbush
totally agree wit u . LMFAO to a T.
Nowadays artists are so reserved with there secrets &" tips" & the only way they'll tell u anything is if u pay 80 bucks for an instructional dvd. or an apprenticeship that could last for years.
Zander526 1 year ago
@JonathanCbush thats because there are so many fuck heads out there that dont give a fuck about the art they want to tattoo to be flashy and make money so alot of real artist are reserved on what took them years and years of practice to master to just give it away to some dumb fuck whos too lazy to learn. i guarantee you wont learn shit from this video if you havent already been taking tattooing serious and already put in countless hours
gmoralesfall09 8 months ago
@JonathanCbush To answer your question - 'Free' how-to tattoo videos encourage the home scratchers with cheap equipment who do not have the training necessary to prevent the spread of bloodborne pathogens.
joshualabello 5 months ago
@joshualabello The videos may also encourage people who are working on practice skins and grapefruits to get their portfolio together and go to a reputable tattoo shop and obtain an apprenticeship. The bloodborne pathogen issue is covered extensively on the internet and if you are looking for info on how to tattoo you can't help but run across it. Just an fyi...
30ledrobster 2 months ago
@30ledrobster - I would argue that people should not be even running a machine, on practice skins or otherwise, UNTIL they've obtained an official apprenticeship - otherwise they'll be developing bad habits that can actually prevent them from getting in to a shop. The 'portfolio' they should be working on should be drawings and paintings to show the shops that they have art skills and are worth being trained to do it on skin.
joshualabello 2 months ago
I have to agree with you on the bad habits part. However, apprenticeships -as you probably already know- are few and far between and they gotta start somewhere. Artists are artists in everything they, I believe in encouraging artists to create. Artists have a tendency to break the rules but tattooing isn't magic it's physics and can be learned and understood fairly easily. Many bad habits can be picked up in shops as well, as there are more lousy tattoo artists out there than good. ;)
30ledrobster 2 months ago
@joshualabello Sorry...my writing was a bit ambiguous I did mean a drawing portfolio not practice skins and rotten grapefruit. :) There's just so much you can say without using up all your characters...well that is IF -like us- you are having an intelligent discussion and not acting like an ass. XD
30ledrobster 2 months ago
@30ledrobster - I wish there was a tattooing guild here in the States to do some quality control... because most of the shops (and this sort of supports your statement) around me were started by people who learned in their houses (or on YouTube - LOL) and are just awful. If there was some kind of rating system, people would be better informed when looking for an apprenticeship (or just for a tattoo!)
joshualabello 2 months ago
Now THAT my friend is a great idea, sort of a consumer reports for the tattooing world. Quoting the post above "and are just awful" Some ppl that were self taught turned out terrific I met a few in prison. Or type Godoy Tattoo or Jeff Gogue in google both self taught. Nobody taught that first caveman to tattoo. Tattoos can be removed today & if someone gets a bad one it's really on them for not doin the research or cheaping out. There are just too many myths about this simple art.
30ledrobster 2 months ago
@30ledrobster - It IS on them if they don't do the research, but the problem that I see here in rural Ohio is that many people don't care about quality; they just want to get 'inked'. So they parade around Wal*Mart with homemade tattoos and do the tattoo world an injustice by being ill-representations. That's bad for my business... (and... sort of good in a way: cover-ups is a huge part of my business.)
joshualabello 2 months ago

A few artists are selling these secrets for hundreds of dollars.

ok first off im pretty sure it's spelled "idiot".. and for you imformation im a tattoo artist in my own shop.. specializing in portraits etc etc.. but just because im good at them doesn't mean i can't get better so i just thought that since the guy is a serious legend that i could get some good tips from him.. lol go get a sense of humor guy geezz!!!! notice your the only one that got offended by what i said.. XD.. OH AND BY THE WAY.. HE WAS GETTING THE DOME IN THIS VIDEO
92reshaun 2 years ago
@92reshaun First of all you are giving the dome while watching this if you realy think that , grow up and get a life ,, by the way you are no tattoo artist why lie like that , why are you watching this if you work in a shop , well they are hacks besides this guy and a few more anyway so i can see "shop" people searching here to learn they do buy machines tunned and admitt it and say they dont tune em them
self witch is really sad , no disrespect but you had to go on about it again
