3 years ago my comment was removed : ok this kid has 17 so what? watch all the stars including Chris Paul in highschool, they're were more athletic, this kid just knows how to pass, does a couple of steals and is a fair shooter. Spain got owned by USA yesterday. I dont believe this kid will make an impact in the NBA, i think he should stay in Euroleague, in te NBA he'll be just a back up pg, the kind that only plays in the last games of the season,
on top of him fitting in on the court he wouldve been a great fit with nocioni, rodrigues, and garcia all native spanish speakers that coulda helped him with the transition to america.. we are gonna regret not picking him when the kings are the leading team in the turnover column with a scoring only pg in tyreke evans
Um you do not that Rubio is Spanish, NOT MEXICAN. Do you think that just because he speaks Spanish the Mexican and Latin American population in the Sacamento area would accept him? The Spanish CONQUERED these people's ancestors. Heard this statement before. I am half Latin. Him speaking Spanish has no hold or impression on me whatsoever. Is he a Conquistador? No but he is not Mexican or any other Latino either.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ricky rubio is so stupid, he should go to the NBA because he would get more money. but i am still watching this and at :42 that moron annoucer was like threeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and his feet were like 3 steps in front of the line, thats why spain probably won so many times in the olympics, they got a guy who is from spain doing the scoreboard.
Por sux.. look how they don't even run on defense.. its like a college team play'n a pick up game against some scrubs at the Y.. the Por should be ashamed at their effort..
Thats not fair criticism because all competition is inferior to the NBA. Every single player that is drafted comes from an inferior league whether its the Spanish ACB or the NCAA.
He never did that. His parents are making his decisions just do you know. He's barely 18 and doesn't know what to do. He still needs to figure out how to pay his team 6 million dollars.
skills, jumpers, turnovers and body could develop over the years but one thing tat teams could not teach are confidence, charisma, the understanding of the game itself and pure vision which this kid have all despite being such a young age..given time and patient,he will be a star for real
also i hope he is really as quick and as slick as he look cause it look like everytime he dribble the denfense cound'lnt stop him. but the in the nba the defense will better and player like raja rondon will give him problem and my concern is is he really as quick as some of the nba point guard so i hope he can show me what he got
i think some of you guys should stop comparing him until he gets to the nba plus don't use the too skinny thing beacuse kevin durant was say to be skinny yet he prove he can play, in my opinion i think the kid is a great passer but need to work on shooting and he does need to be more physical, i hope he isn't a bust
rubio has NO jumper. strictly a set shot. no way he can get it off in the nba. he needs to work on that. and he has no mid range game, he wont be able to pull up he shoots way too slow with no elevation
he didn´y play with Marc, Ricky for profesional only has played for DKV Joventut (Penya) and Marc has played for Barcelona and Akasvayu. But They ever play together for Spain. Sorry for my bad English
I'm sure you know more about Spanish basketball than me, but I swear that's Marc Gasol with the high black socks. If you freeze the video at 1:45 he's on the right side of the screen. I could be wrong. Regardless, I would draft this kid if I could
this kid is very good.hopefully he would be able to adjust to the nba's physical style of play.he also has to improve his outside shooting and play tougher defense....he is only 17 or 18 i think....so he definitely has time.good luck!!!
The European system is focused on development. European nations on average do not have the bureaucratic problems that the US has and have a deeper sense of nationalism which carries into national life from the political level down to activities such as youth and club basketball. We as Americans are still too divided on too many issues imporant and not as important to fully function as we should despite our cultural and industrial differences.
The problem with the American system is that we have no state and national standards for player development. There are too many kids, and too much bureacracy(parents, coaches, etc.) for this to happen. The AAU system does provide exposure but overplay burns players out and does not allow for skill development cultivation due to constant play over the last 25 years.
Rubio is more refined as a pure point due to 1. playing on a professional team 2. playing in a national develop system. Wall is a better physical talent in pure play. The NBA is a team game and both could become good guards in the League. Wall is hailed as a Rose like player which in talent and style he is similiar. How often did Paul attempt to break Rubio down when Spain played a 2-3 zone for the entire game? They could not guard the US players 1 on 1. Did not have the talent except for Pau.
I did not say Wall was a good shooter. He is below average but has improved over the year and technique wise is more sound than Rubio right now. Does that mean he will be better in 5 years? No but right now he is slightly better in technique and as a shooter off the dribble. How many guards are athletic as Wall? He is faster than Rose and just a 1.5 inches less off his vertical leap. Wall is a exceptional draw and dish passer that commands defensive rotations due to constant drives.
The thing about pass first point guards, they need players in order to function properly. How many pass first point guards have you seen carry teams with no scorers and defenders helping them? Paul is a score and pass point guard equally. He could score 30 a night if need be but will do what is necessary to win. Nash is not a dominant scorer. Picks and chooses when to shoot due to system and knowledge of how to compete against superior athletes. Struggled in a traditional NBA offense.
Do what you can to win. If your teammates are not aggressive take over. Take over soundly. Take the best shots that put the put the pressure on the defense(off the drive. finishes. reverse pivot shots. pull up jumpshots). Never settle for what hte defense gives you. In actuality that is unsound. Defense sets and had superior rebounding and transition positioning when a team settles for jumpshots.
i never thought of the last thing you said it makes alot of since im always not a big fan of teams who jsut shoot 3s or jumpers.and the thing about taking over evertime my team mateas just stop playing and call me a ballhog its annoying but whatever thanks
Taking alot of shots is not selifsh unless it is done clearly against your teammates. Lebron James averages 20 shots a game but is called a team player. Take good shots where you are have the advantage not the defense. Pass when you get doubled and draw rotations. Penetration is the most dangerous threat to a defense. Proven fact. Ball hogging is not passing and shooting without regard for the team. Taking good shots that help the team win is not selfish.
What sounds more efficient? A player that can create his shot and takes intiative by creating his own shot or passing the ball to teammates that are passive? Passive performance leads to losses. Ball hogging is greatly misunderstood in the modern game. Passing for alot of assists is not necessarily the characteristic of a good teammate either. Marbury and Iverson averaged 7+ assists for most of their careers but are clearly selfish players. Talk to your coach about it.
now i see where you saw me from my message ya know ok well i completly understand what you are saying and i completly agree with you i hate it when one of my teammates will be doubled or tripled teamed and than just try and shoot over them and not pass out or just shoot no matter what cause he thought he was so good , after being with the school team and the school coach has showed me the importance of getting my shot and im starting to get better at it
He has the talent to become a dominant passer but there are holes in his game that have to be stated for proper evaluation. He is talented. Pass first point guards are rare but just passing the ball will not win ball games. Guards need to be able score in bursts and stretches when sets break down under 6 seconds on the shot clock. Guards have to challenge their oppositions offensive set up to minimize rhythm and coordinate the perimeter defense in conjunction witht he interior help.
Also like I said has not shown a driving pivot finish game nor a mid range game which will be vital to his playmaking to counter the defense when they expect him to hit the open man. He does not have the size nor athleticism to finish over or around NBA on ball defenders or help defenders consistently yet due to watching him struggle with these skills in Europe against lesser competition. This skills will be vital for his success.
Would not say off the charts. Could be. Basketball I.Q. is more than within the team game. There is individual and corporate I.Q. on offense and defense within multiple situations. He has shown high I.Q. in some areas(passing, 2 man game, offensive system set up. some team defensive situations) questionable in others(isolations, sudden rotation reads, isolation defense).
Have not seen him stay in front of quality scorers and penetrators. Like I said playing in the NBA is different from Euroleague. Has had questionable performances over this season despite his injury as well as last season. The point guards in the NCAA are weak this year. John Wall(HS prospect) would break him down all day long. Faster, stronger, more aggressive with an exceptional handle and sound counter moves off the dribble with an improving pullup jump shot from 12-18 feet when overplayed.
Did his composure help him finish around the basket where he excecuted poor finishing technqiue? No. Did it help him dominate opponents? His performance was overrated. Like I said he needs players around him to compensate. He will not carry you on his back for bursts or stretches. Not that type of players. Nash like in a system that caters to him and minimizes his weaknesses like Nash.
i have to say i don't agree with all those people who say that a pass first point guard can't lead a team...plus Ricky in Europe has been a very productive scorer, 9 points in 14 minutes in this game. He is extremely mature and chooses the right shots, not like Kobe or other great 'scorers' who shoot 30 a night and hit 12 or so of them...it is very natural for European players to be more aware of percentage basketball, .. i think Ricky is a future star nonetheless
Euroleague is not the NBA. Rickys individual offensive skill set right now is not as advanced as his corporate skills are. In the modern NBA point guards need to be threats both as scorers and distributors. This is one reason why Tyreke Evans was selected by the Kings instead of Rubio. He can create his own shot at will and commands double teams and rotations. Rubio has not exhibited this consistently yet. Could he? Possibly but his shooting, and scoring moves need work. Those lay ups wont work.
i'm a kings fan and im still pissed about getting evans.. imo evans is gonna end up only getting 5maybe 6 assists a game.. we need way more than that.. if we woulda picked rubio he wouldve got around 8ppg 9-10apg 3rpg and 1.5spg whereas evans will be getting around 15ppg 5apg and 4rpg 1spg rubios extra assists would more than make up for the lack of scoring not to mention he wouldve made jason thompson's career with him being on the receiving end of those pick and roll passes
I am not. The right pick was made. Evans is bigger, stronger, a better finisher, scorer and will be a better defender due to his size, length and quickness. Gives the Kings the most talented perimeter player they have had since Richmond. Arguably the biggest point guard in the league from day 1. His shot creating skills and size commands double teams, something else the Kings need more than a pass first point guard. Martin already stated he is giddy about playing with Evans in the Sac Bee.
Evans requires defensive commitment from multiple defenders. Rubio does not. Evans has already shown his willingness to make plays. He brings 2 of the central star calibur talents needed to be a star in the NBA. 1. Ability to create plays in under 6 seconds. Evans specialty is creating shots off the dribble. 2. Command double teams and help. No PG in the league can cover Evans 1 on 1. Too big, too strong, with too great a handle. His aggressiveness to the hole makes it even harder to defend him.
Dont need a ton of assists. Just draw help. That is more importantt. Evans will do that. I was at the draft party at Arco in June. Half the crowd wanted Rubio. The other Evans. I am glad they picked Evans. Have been a fan of his since his sophomore year of high school. Dominate talent with superstar potential.
Pass first point guards are overrated anyways. Especially when you look at the most successful guards in the NBA. All score the ball extrememly well and finish. Even the so called Pass first guards(Nash, Kidd) can create off the dribble and finish. Nash is one of the best shooters in the league. Paul is a 20+PPG scorer. Williams is right there at 19. Davis. Younger Marbury. Iverson. Parker. Rose is developing into 1. Rondo could score more if he did not have the stars on his team.
You are forgetting the defenses that NBA players face and the adjustments they create their presence on the floor. The shooting argument is not strong concerning the NBA since Kobe and other players like him create many mismatch problems, requires multiple adjustments, and can take over a game at a given time. No player in Europe right now has this ability at an NBA level. Not Rubio, no one.
Sorry, no. That is a cliche. You do not score with a pass. You transition posessions with passing. That is the talent less team rhetoric that distorts player development. Passing is useful to function a team offense but it is proven that dribble penetration is the most dangerous threat to a defense in basketball. This is 1 reason why the Drubble Drive offense has become so popular. You can pass all you want if you do not have the skill to create space and the hit the shot it will mean nothing.
Proven fact that you can see from 82games dotcom. Most assists in the league occur 1 way off of 2 situations. The Kick out pass from help defense covering dribble penetration and double teaming the post. Bottom line is it requres drawing help due to a player that can create plays by himself.
you are acting like all rubio can do is pass, the guy has made handles and will be able to get in the lane on NBA defenses, and to add to that he's a more advanced passer than the best in the NBA right now, his pass's are very very deceptive.
Can he finish with contact against NBA calibur athletes? How will he handle the constant adjustments? Can he carry a team? Can he shoot consistently? Has not shown this abilities so far. Could he improve? Yes but his stock did drop to seveal mistakes on his part this past draft. Sorry I will take John Wall over him any day. Wall is ready to contribute right now. Rubio is a better passer than the best in the NBA? Wow you are way off.
do you even play basketball? lol if you do you are probably terrible. Rubio faces NBA caliber athletes in his professional league. Your problem is TV has brainwashed you, no logic can fight your hypnotized state of mind.
Actually I have. Your position is absolute garbage. This comments have been mentioned and he has not answered all of them from numerous evaluatory sources. You understanding is terrible. That is garbage. There are not many NBA calibur athletes in his league. That is bogus. Majority of Euroleague players could not cut it in the NBA. Crap most of the players that transition are nothing more than role players other than the select few like Gasol and Nowitzki.
Another Euro hopeful. For every 1 successful 1 there are dozens of failures. Kukoc was in teh exact same position. Hailed as a Euro Jordan as a 16 year old. Was a productive player in the NBA but no star. Sabonis would have been but he came too late. Even Nowitzki still struggles with physical and athletic players in the NBA and he is 7'0. Ricky is talented but he is no guaranteed superstar. Could become a good player but this Eurobandwagon jumping is absurd He has been questioned for sometime.
My hypnotized state of mind? Wow. Your deductive skills are impressive-NOT. Outside of Rubio and Montejuenas(forget his correct spelling) the Euro crop is weak. Even Donatas has considerable question markes to his game. He is skilled but has alot to learn.
He has no shown the ability to finish under pressure with contact. In the Olympics alone he shot only 8-32. His shooting is still suspect. More of a ball hawker than a on ball defender. Tended to gamble too much on defense. Wiry frame not solid. He can pass and has exceptional vision and feel but that is not enough to guarantee stardom in the NBA. Too many of your Euros get offended over and criticism of this kid. He has alot to prove.
Nash is not an elite athlete but played his best basketball in a system that placed him best where 1. He could dominate the ball and distribute as he saw fit 2. would not be accountable on defense. Nash is skilled but is not the most talented point guard in the League. Barely top 10. Efficiency is his strength. He stated himself that if everyone worked as hard as him he would be out of job. Also stated that if he played Marbury 1 on 1 10 times that Marbury would kill him every time.
The grassroots game(high school and below) has alot of prospects that could become NBA players when they mature but they need to grow up not. Lance Stephenson is a Lottery pick. So is Renardo Sidney, Demarcus Cousins, Derrick Favors, John Wall, Jordan Hamilton and Xavier Henry would all be drafted from the Lottery to late 1st round if they were eligible. Kenny Boynton likely not due to size and lack of point guard experience(NBA position by size despite being a primary scorer).
The no hand checking rule will help him offensively and hurt him defensively. He has the handle to break defenders down but he finishes flatfooted, has no driving pivot finish game, and no mid range game yet. Those are bad signs. Parker came to the US with that and it helped him tremendously. Could he develop it? Yes but until he does he will have issues finishing in the NBA. European players have had trouble finishing around the hoop for years except for Pau Gasol.
Kidd improved but is still marginal in some situations by attempt and situation compared to truly great shooters. Marions is a overachieving 2nd tier player with subpar ball skills and a great motor. Barry peaked after his rookie year. No wher near the level of his father, Rick Barry. Briliant scorer in this day. 40% is not bad it is solid but the Euroleague line is shorter and also shooters are not under the pressure that NBA shooters are under on average. Defenders close out alot faster.
Could he improve? Yes but there is no absolute certainity that he will improve it to where 1. It is no longer a weakness 2. Improves other areas of his game 3. It cannot be countered by certain defensive strategies(physical play. bumping, stunting, rotations, etc.) Seen him make mistakes on the defensive end and in isolations that a player of his "calibur" should not make regardless of age especially if I.Q. is one of your strengths.
If you do not have elite level athleticism, ball skills and basketball I.Q. you will not succeed. Rubio has sound I.Q. in some areas but not all. LIke I said he could be an elite passer but his game is no where near complete. Needs major refinement.
Only 60 could be drafted and 100 on average are considered actually for the draft and free agency that season regardless of class. Most NCAA players are not good enough to create their own shots facing or posting up nor could defend on the ball in isolations on the NBA level. Look at the weak crop of prospects this year. Only a few are considered possible stars(Griffin, Monroe, Harden, Rubio, Evans, Warren, etc.)
NCAA basketball is a conundrum. The vast majority of world class talent is in the high major conferences yet the majority of those players have marginal careers in the NBA. A few excel and become stars and legends. Shows the difficulty to compete in the NBA season in and season out. There are over 4000 players in D1 another 3500-4000 in D2. How many of those players do you actually believe are good enough to play in the NBA?
Euroleague big men are weak on the ball. Most are help defenders at best. Majority have no lift off the ground with above average core strength at best. Marc Gasol is 1 of the few that has solid strength. Bargnani is a prime example. Cant cover post down low with his subpar strength and torse width and does not have the footspeed and footwork on defense to guard skilled and athletic bigs.
Rubio's shooting technique is subpar. Shoots flatfooted on set shots. Literally no mid range pull up game. Wrist technique curves on average attempts. Little eleveation on finishes(crucial to finish in the League unless the adopts Nash style finishses even then wil have to pick and choose when to finish. Nash is no primary finisher in the League either). He is skinny but there are numerous American players the same age and younger that if you did not know you would think they are grown men.
Passing skills are vision are not in question. 43% in ACB? How many attempts? Under what situations? How consistent? Streaks? Bursts? Yeah Euroleague defenders are not NBA level defenders on average in size, athleticism and pure talent. Littered with players that are either past their primes or could not make it in the NBA. Euroleague big men are fundmaentally sound offensively but how many stoppers come out that league? How many other than Gasol hasve resonable defense?
Seen too many European stars that were suppose to be NBA stars. Kukoc was in the same predicament that Rubio was in back in 90. Sound player but not the player that scouts thought he would be. Nowitizki is an All Star but has serious flaws. Bargnani is a bust. Rubio could be good but cannot call him a superstar yet. Pampered in the Euroleague and has not faced superior players and athletes on a consistent basis.
T. Kukoc is a European legend and did a good job holding his own at his time with the bulls, and nowitski if it wasnt for him and jason kidd they woudnt be in the play offs this year and Bargnani is actually playing good ball atm.
Rubio could become a double digit assist passer in the League with the right players but can he score in the NBA consistently? Can he handle the contact without bulking up and possibly lose speed and quickness? Can he guard penetrating guards? Will he succumb to European transition problems? Can he carry a team by himself(true mark of a superstar)? This are few quesions that he has not answered so far.
A few flaws? Wow and you question my judgement even though I am respected on a national level on the grassroots level and upwards. Forget the fact that these flaws are vital for success in the NBA. Forgot how he struggled to score in the Olympics(8-32 overall). Forget the fact that Euroleague talent is not the NBA no matter what Europeans may boast and pout about. Kid could be good never said he could not but will have to wait and see.
Wish he could play in the Nike Youth Summit with the other kids his age. Give him a slight taste(not grown men but NBA calibure and potential players) of what he will face in the NBA after Wall burns him several straight times down the floor off the dribble. Banged on the wing by Lance Stephenson(6'5 225 lb shooting guard beast).
Rubio is a lottery pick but his status is uncertain. Like I stated but apparently you have not read he has talent but he is no sure shot star in this League. His age is cop out and a weak excuse. He is a professional with access to trainers and coaches that most kids his age do not. He has been pampered for years and hailed as a European Lebron. Sorry he is not on Lebron's level. If you like him, fine I am not sure of him and I am not the only one. Could be good but a legend not sure.
Wow what a witty remark. Idiot. Skills can be improved but that does not mean that they will be. Nowtizki is still soft, cannot defend, cannot dribble and cannot handle physical defenders. Yao is talented but has not consistently been the dominant big man that the Rockets need him to be. Nash still cannot defend despite being a gym rat. Having potential does not mean you will reach it. Seen too many players like that before. If you cannot understant that then...
Rubio could be a good guard in the right system(spread pick and roll) with players supporting him(shooters. Interior defenders). He is not a take over a game and dominate player. Sorry but he is not. Paul is. Kobe is. Lebron is. Wade is. Rose potentially. Rubio? No. Good player with the right system. Not a franchise player.
The Nash comparison is slightly off. Nash is a far superior shooter. D'Antoni's system also made Nash look better than he actually is. Good player but not an MVP talent. Won the awards on technical circumstances(team system). Rubio could be good if used as a pass first point guard that has help on defense to cover for him. If he plays for a subpar team he will get eaten alive on defense by quick guards and will struggle to score. He has not shown the skills to score in the League.
Raving over what? He can't jump. Not fast. Can't shoot. Only scores against weak defenders. Skinny. The comparison to Pete Maravich are so off base it is disrespectful to Maravich's legacy. The Nash comparison is slightly off. Pete would run rings around this kid. Rubio can pass, make a flashy move and Sorry the NBA is a world away from DKJV. Euroleague is essentially a haven for former NBA players and players who could not make it in the League.
Unlimited potential? Sorry no. Good potential yes. He does not have the upside to become a dominant athlete. Not every rookie is a boom or bust. Some play moderately. Rubio still has not shown the ability to play solid on ball defense. Worse is that he is not quick and with the League rules of no hand checking makes him a target for penetration. How you think this kid is a lock down defender is beyond me. His footwork is marginal and gambles too much for steals. Not the sign of a defender.
Look at the NBA over the last 20 years since Divac. Only a handful have been truly productive players and most of them are 1 dimensional(Petrovic, Nowitzki, Radja, Marcilounis, etc.) Majority are busts that have no impact(Bargnani, Saskivicius, etc.) A few are versatile and have impact(Gasol. Sabonis(Past his prime when he arrived)). Rubio has talent but I do not see a star. Even in Euroleague he does not put up dominant numbers. He could be a Nash like player(style) but a star is uncertain.
NBA calibur players. He is an average athlete overall which will hurt him against guards like Paul and Williams. Rose will break him down all day long. Rubio could be a good guard if he improves his skills but I do not see alot of upside and frankly most European players are average talents. Fundamentally sound yes but are average talents.
I have no reason to lie. I scout in this industry and have only been impressed with Rubio on a moderate level. He does have natural court vision and passing skills but he has serious flaws that need to be improved if he wants to be a productive player in the NBA. His shooting technique subpar in all stages. He has not shown any refined go to moves off the dribble(prerequisite for scorers). He has long arms but gambles too much on defense and has not shown the ability to play on ball defense
I suggest you take a look at new reports. His abilities are now being questioned. I questioned them before. Playing in Europe and playing in the NBA are 2 different games in 2 different environments. The players are more athletic and more talented simple as that. Rubio has not shown the abilitity(as of yet) to score at the NBA level individually or corporately. Scoring 51 in a Russian game is not scoring against the Spurs or Celtics. The level of talent is drastically different.
Athleticism is a premium in evaluating player potential. Athleticism also gives a player a tremendous advantage due to the ability to move faster, jump higher, and out muscle lesser athletic players. Having athleticism does not necessarily mean that you are or will be a great player. Athleticism also has to be used wisely within performance. Jumping high does not mean that you know how to elevate to shoot. Having speed does not mean you know how to break down the opposition off the dribble.
great quality and great players, thanks for the footage, but I don't believe, he'll make it in the NBA. He's skinny, he's got to work a fucking lot to become faster and stronger and then he'd be ready for this challenge tho. One more thing - he's very smart to not entering the draft of 2009. He know he's not ready yet and gotta get more experience. Pure talent.
Do u realize that he is 18 years old?? there are many skinnier players in the NBA i don't know of any off the top of my head but this kid has the talent and poise to play USA ball...don't believe me? watch how he was playing in the Olympics especially against the USA, plays calm and doesn't get phased even by Americas best.
Looks like the next Jason Kidd, with a more graceful game but without the strong build. I could easily see him leading the NBA in assists in a few years.
all this is well and great and the kid looks great against these guys. But look at the score and the quality of the other team. This kid is good but it's going to be tough for him to make it
called "victor claver" plays in the team called "pamesa valencia" go and search videos from him, like slam dunk contest he won (concurso de mates in spanish), he plays on the ACB league, you can log onto acbtv and watch videos from him and the recaps from the top europe league, also the top plays...
you're all talking about athleticism. but a player has to have more that. if it was only about athleticism, gerald green would be a star in the nba and larry bird would have never made it to the nba. think about it.
Yes but athleticism is valuable. Skills are the most important. But you have to face reality. Americans are the best in the world at this game for a reason. Kobe is the best in the world because he is the most talented and worked hard to reach this level. Lebron is once in generation prospect. There are no player in Europe with that kind of potential. Sorry there are not.
Of course he won't rival Bron or Kobe he's a different type of player altogether so stop just bringing their names up. Call me crazy but Ricky reminds me of Jkidd & Pistol Pete, he will be that type of NBA player, not the one who makes spectacular plays or shows amazing athletiscism,no, he will be a very good point guard able to read the game get the team involved, knock down jumpers when required. He has a good future
Defensive specialist? Really. Never seen him make a sound fundamental stop. Gets in the passing lanes for steals, but that does not make you a elite defender. Ball stops, lower opponent field goal percantage, turnovers, force offs and lower points per game is. He has not shown that yet. How can you make a Pistol Pete comparison?Maravich was a far superior shooter and scorer at 17 as well as an adult. Rubio has not exhibited elite scoring ability yet.Exceptoinal dribble and passiing. Not scoring.
He is a great defender, he made a kid cry because of his exceptional defense. Pistol was a great passer and handler that was the comparison I was making not as an all round player, I'm not an idiot.
Not seen him play exceptional positional defense yet. Scouting reports echo the same statement. Consistent ball hawker(steals the ball) but does not have sound defenisve footork. Tell me this: How do you believe he will do guarding the best point guards in the world on a weekly basis for 6-8 months for 30-40 minutes a night. Chris Paul one night, Deron Williams another, Jason Kidd, Baron Davis, Stephon Marbury, Tony Parker, Derrick Rose, Arenas, etc Sometimes shooting guards like Kobe and Wade.
I hear what you are saying! but its the same 4all these guards too that you just mentioned! so whats the difference, no-one can defend these guys, bar kobe, he defends consistantly, and makes guys work for what they get, and shuts guys down too! but yea back to my original point, whats the difference between ricky rubio guarding steve nash, or tony parker guarding him! id say not alot, nash will have his way with anyone!
Who has he played in Europe that is anywhere near as talented as Chris Paul, or Deron Willams? Baron Davis would eat this kid alive offensively. Too big, too strong, too fast, too athletic, too good. People overseas forget how great NBA players are. Rubio could be a good point guard, but a dominant one? Will have to wait and see. He will be a defensive liability.
chitownmo......i think rubios jumpshot is weakest..i read that he goes to the us to work on it.His mental game i think will separate him from the rest..if you watch him play against the usa..he was very poised and relax inspite of the pressure.Playin against men at such a young age has further enhanced his natural talent.
Lol so your not supposed to flick the ball with your wrist when you shoot?
You do realise flicking the wrist is the most important part of the shot right?
go watch some videos of brent barry shooting. rubio has nearly exactly the same shooting stroke as barry. im not saying hes a great shooter but dont judge a players shot by how it looks, but by how consistant it is.
sorry what i meant to say was he doesnt get too much of his power from his legs when he shoots I think, in my opinion, that he just uses his arms more them he should
Paul was physcially superior to Rubio at the same age. Look at American high school basketball. I do not see what the hype is about. He is not a European version of Lebron. He is not athletic, is a subpar shooter, nor a great scorer by American standards. He could be a solid pass first point guard but a NBA All Star? Doubtful. Does not have the tools of a NBA superstar. There are alot of guards with more athleticism and potential. John Wall, Brandon Knight, J-Mychal Reese, etc.

ok this kid has 17 so what? watch all the stars including Chris Paul in highschool, they're were more athletic, this kid just knows how to pass, does a couple of steals and is a fair shooter. Spain got owned by USA yesterday. I dont believe this kid will make an impact in the NBA, i think he should stay in Euroleague, in te NBA he'll be just a back up pg, the kind that only plays in the last games of the season
umm...so you're saying there are 17 year old PGs in the game who can pass as well and see the floor as well as this guy? you just put him in the same breath as Chris Paul, and you're saying he won't be anything? and you're bashing him for not being "athletic". hmm...2 time MVP of the league, Steve Nash, not really the picture of athleticism, but hey, if you think athleticism is everything, you just keep watching those AND1 videos and believing that's how basketball is played.
Really how so? They are as big as an NBA team and just as athletic even though they are kids. No one in Europe can stay in front of Wall one on one. Tyler is a beast inside that can hit the 20 footer. Sidney can take you inside and outside and shoot the NBA 3 at 6'10. Henry is a Kobe clone. Stephenson is compared to Lebron James but shorter. Sorry I doubt that "any team in Europe could beat that." You will see at the Nike Youth Summit this season.
What are they looking at Rubio for to be? A European hope? A Euro Superstar in the NBA? Take a jab at the Americans? What? You guys are taking this too far. They are at least 10-12 kids in high school in the US right now that could play in the NBA if they were allowed to. Look at the Draft this past June. Record year for freshman entrant who should have been allowed to be drafted into the League out of high school. Everyone I mentioned would be drafted in the 09 draft if they could be.

No but he is not Mexican or any other Latino either.

i think some of you guys should stop comparing him until he gets to the nba plus don't use the too skinny thing beacuse kevin durant was say to be skinny yet he prove he can play, in my opinion i think the kid is a great passer but need to work on shooting and he does need to be more physical, i hope he isn't a bust
magicbird23 2 years ago
rubio has NO jumper. strictly a set shot. no way he can get it off in the nba. he needs to work on that. and he has no mid range game, he wont be able to pull up he shoots way too slow with no elevation
southbayla24 2 years ago
he can work on that but the boy will give plenty assists and his drive will kill you, this allong with an avg. of 3 steals a game gives you a weapon !
plus you can't forget that he only takes wide open shots so he has time to take his shot! and therefor only smart shots!

The European system is focused on development. European nations on average do not have the bureaucratic problems that the US has and have a deeper sense of nationalism which carries into national life from the political level down to activities such as youth and club basketball. We as Americans are still too divided on too many issues imporant and not as important to fully function as we should despite our cultural and industrial differences.
chitownmo 2 years ago
The problem with the American system is that we have no state and national standards for player development. There are too many kids, and too much bureacracy(parents, coaches, etc.) for this to happen. The AAU system does provide exposure but overplay burns players out and does not allow for skill development cultivation due to constant play over the last 25 years.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Rubio is more refined as a pure point due to 1. playing on a professional team 2. playing in a national develop system. Wall is a better physical talent in pure play. The NBA is a team game and both could become good guards in the League. Wall is hailed as a Rose like player which in talent and style he is similiar. How often did Paul attempt to break Rubio down when Spain played a 2-3 zone for the entire game? They could not guard the US players 1 on 1. Did not have the talent except for Pau.
chitownmo 2 years ago
I did not say Wall was a good shooter. He is below average but has improved over the year and technique wise is more sound than Rubio right now. Does that mean he will be better in 5 years? No but right now he is slightly better in technique and as a shooter off the dribble. How many guards are athletic as Wall? He is faster than Rose and just a 1.5 inches less off his vertical leap. Wall is a exceptional draw and dish passer that commands defensive rotations due to constant drives.
chitownmo 2 years ago
The thing about pass first point guards, they need players in order to function properly. How many pass first point guards have you seen carry teams with no scorers and defenders helping them? Paul is a score and pass point guard equally. He could score 30 a night if need be but will do what is necessary to win. Nash is not a dominant scorer. Picks and chooses when to shoot due to system and knowledge of how to compete against superior athletes. Struggled in a traditional NBA offense.
chitownmo 2 years ago
for real dude im a pass first point guard and im in a system at schol where im forced to try and score 1 on 1 while all my teammates stand there
hawk1169 2 years ago
Do what you can to win. If your teammates are not aggressive take over. Take over soundly. Take the best shots that put the put the pressure on the defense(off the drive. finishes. reverse pivot shots. pull up jumpshots). Never settle for what hte defense gives you. In actuality that is unsound. Defense sets and had superior rebounding and transition positioning when a team settles for jumpshots.
chitownmo 2 years ago
i never thought of the last thing you said it makes alot of since im always not a big fan of teams who jsut shoot 3s or jumpers.and the thing about taking over evertime my team mateas just stop playing and call me a ballhog its annoying but whatever thanks
hawk1169 2 years ago
Taking alot of shots is not selifsh unless it is done clearly against your teammates. Lebron James averages 20 shots a game but is called a team player. Take good shots where you are have the advantage not the defense. Pass when you get doubled and draw rotations. Penetration is the most dangerous threat to a defense. Proven fact. Ball hogging is not passing and shooting without regard for the team. Taking good shots that help the team win is not selfish.
chitownmo 2 years ago
What sounds more efficient? A player that can create his shot and takes intiative by creating his own shot or passing the ball to teammates that are passive? Passive performance leads to losses. Ball hogging is greatly misunderstood in the modern game. Passing for alot of assists is not necessarily the characteristic of a good teammate either. Marbury and Iverson averaged 7+ assists for most of their careers but are clearly selfish players. Talk to your coach about it.
chitownmo 2 years ago
now i see where you saw me from my message ya know ok well i completly understand what you are saying and i completly agree with you i hate it when one of my teammates will be doubled or tripled teamed and than just try and shoot over them and not pass out or just shoot no matter what cause he thought he was so good , after being with the school team and the school coach has showed me the importance of getting my shot and im starting to get better at it
hawk1169 2 years ago
Settled shots, deep fadeaways and multi defender contested shots shouuld be avoided. Attack the defense. Make them take what you want to give them.
chitownmo 2 years ago
that says a lot more about you than them - if you were pass first you fit your game to theirs.
the reason he would not play on clippers is they already have parker and davis.
Klinickal 2 years ago
what are you talking about? ya you have no idea what your talking about
hawk1169 2 years ago
He has the talent to become a dominant passer but there are holes in his game that have to be stated for proper evaluation. He is talented. Pass first point guards are rare but just passing the ball will not win ball games. Guards need to be able score in bursts and stretches when sets break down under 6 seconds on the shot clock. Guards have to challenge their oppositions offensive set up to minimize rhythm and coordinate the perimeter defense in conjunction witht he interior help.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Also like I said has not shown a driving pivot finish game nor a mid range game which will be vital to his playmaking to counter the defense when they expect him to hit the open man. He does not have the size nor athleticism to finish over or around NBA on ball defenders or help defenders consistently yet due to watching him struggle with these skills in Europe against lesser competition. This skills will be vital for his success.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Would not say off the charts. Could be. Basketball I.Q. is more than within the team game. There is individual and corporate I.Q. on offense and defense within multiple situations. He has shown high I.Q. in some areas(passing, 2 man game, offensive system set up. some team defensive situations) questionable in others(isolations, sudden rotation reads, isolation defense).
chitownmo 2 years ago
Have not seen him stay in front of quality scorers and penetrators. Like I said playing in the NBA is different from Euroleague. Has had questionable performances over this season despite his injury as well as last season. The point guards in the NCAA are weak this year. John Wall(HS prospect) would break him down all day long. Faster, stronger, more aggressive with an exceptional handle and sound counter moves off the dribble with an improving pullup jump shot from 12-18 feet when overplayed.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Did his composure help him finish around the basket where he excecuted poor finishing technqiue? No. Did it help him dominate opponents? His performance was overrated. Like I said he needs players around him to compensate. He will not carry you on his back for bursts or stretches. Not that type of players. Nash like in a system that caters to him and minimizes his weaknesses like Nash.
chitownmo 2 years ago
i have to say i don't agree with all those people who say that a pass first point guard can't lead a team...plus Ricky in Europe has been a very productive scorer, 9 points in 14 minutes in this game. He is extremely mature and chooses the right shots, not like Kobe or other great 'scorers' who shoot 30 a night and hit 12 or so of them...it is very natural for European players to be more aware of percentage basketball, .. i think Ricky is a future star nonetheless
PAUPERSTAR 2 years ago 2
Euroleague is not the NBA. Rickys individual offensive skill set right now is not as advanced as his corporate skills are. In the modern NBA point guards need to be threats both as scorers and distributors. This is one reason why Tyreke Evans was selected by the Kings instead of Rubio. He can create his own shot at will and commands double teams and rotations. Rubio has not exhibited this consistently yet. Could he? Possibly but his shooting, and scoring moves need work. Those lay ups wont work.
chitownmo 2 years ago
i'm a kings fan and im still pissed about getting evans.. imo evans is gonna end up only getting 5maybe 6 assists a game.. we need way more than that.. if we woulda picked rubio he wouldve got around 8ppg 9-10apg 3rpg and 1.5spg whereas evans will be getting around 15ppg 5apg and 4rpg 1spg rubios extra assists would more than make up for the lack of scoring not to mention he wouldve made jason thompson's career with him being on the receiving end of those pick and roll passes
goudz23 2 years ago
Martin already stated he is giddy about playing with Evans in the Sac Bee.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Evans requires defensive commitment from multiple defenders. Rubio does not. Evans has already shown his willingness to make plays. He brings 2 of the central star calibur talents needed to be a star in the NBA. 1. Ability to create plays in under 6 seconds. Evans specialty is creating shots off the dribble. 2. Command double teams and help. No PG in the league can cover Evans 1 on 1. Too big, too strong, with too great a handle. His aggressiveness to the hole makes it even harder to defend him.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Dont need a ton of assists. Just draw help. That is more importantt. Evans will do that. I was at the draft party at Arco in June. Half the crowd wanted Rubio. The other Evans. I am glad they picked Evans. Have been a fan of his since his sophomore year of high school. Dominate talent with superstar potential.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Pass first point guards are overrated anyways. Especially when you look at the most successful guards in the NBA. All score the ball extrememly well and finish. Even the so called Pass first guards(Nash, Kidd) can create off the dribble and finish. Nash is one of the best shooters in the league. Paul is a 20+PPG scorer. Williams is right there at 19. Davis. Younger Marbury. Iverson. Parker. Rose is developing into 1. Rondo could score more if he did not have the stars on his team.
chitownmo 2 years ago
You are forgetting the defenses that NBA players face and the adjustments they create their presence on the floor. The shooting argument is not strong concerning the NBA since Kobe and other players like him create many mismatch problems, requires multiple adjustments, and can take over a game at a given time. No player in Europe right now has this ability at an NBA level. Not Rubio, no one.
chitownmo 2 years ago 2
the pass is the most devastating weapon in basketball
farttalk45 2 years ago 2
You can pass all you want if you do not have the skill to create space and the hit the shot it will mean nothing.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Proven fact that you can see from 82games dotcom. Most assists in the league occur 1 way off of 2 situations. The Kick out pass from help defense covering dribble penetration and double teaming the post. Bottom line is it requres drawing help due to a player that can create plays by himself.
chitownmo 2 years ago
you are acting like all rubio can do is pass, the guy has made handles and will be able to get in the lane on NBA defenses, and to add to that he's a more advanced passer than the best in the NBA right now, his pass's are very very deceptive.
farttalk45 2 years ago
Can he finish with contact against NBA calibur athletes? How will he handle the constant adjustments? Can he carry a team? Can he shoot consistently? Has not shown this abilities so far. Could he improve? Yes but his stock did drop to seveal mistakes on his part this past draft. Sorry I will take John Wall over him any day. Wall is ready to contribute right now. Rubio is a better passer than the best in the NBA? Wow you are way off.
chitownmo 2 years ago
do you even play basketball? lol if you do you are probably terrible. Rubio faces NBA caliber athletes in his professional league. Your problem is TV has brainwashed you, no logic can fight your hypnotized state of mind.
farttalk45 2 years ago
Actually I have. Your position is absolute garbage. This comments have been mentioned and he has not answered all of them from numerous evaluatory sources. You understanding is terrible. That is garbage. There are not many NBA calibur athletes in his league. That is bogus. Majority of Euroleague players could not cut it in the NBA. Crap most of the players that transition are nothing more than role players other than the select few like Gasol and Nowitzki.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Another Euro hopeful. For every 1 successful 1 there are dozens of failures. Kukoc was in teh exact same position. Hailed as a Euro Jordan as a 16 year old. Was a productive player in the NBA but no star. Sabonis would have been but he came too late. Even Nowitzki still struggles with physical and athletic players in the NBA and he is 7'0. Ricky is talented but he is no guaranteed superstar. Could become a good player but this Eurobandwagon jumping is absurd He has been questioned for sometime.
chitownmo 2 years ago
so true, but, i have hope on him.
punxsongsrules 2 years ago
My hypnotized state of mind? Wow. Your deductive skills are impressive-NOT. Outside of Rubio and Montejuenas(forget his correct spelling) the Euro crop is weak. Even Donatas has considerable question markes to his game. He is skilled but has alot to learn.
chitownmo 2 years ago
He has no shown the ability to finish under pressure with contact. In the Olympics alone he shot only 8-32. His shooting is still suspect. More of a ball hawker than a on ball defender. Tended to gamble too much on defense. Wiry frame not solid. He can pass and has exceptional vision and feel but that is not enough to guarantee stardom in the NBA. Too many of your Euros get offended over and criticism of this kid. He has alot to prove.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Nash is not an elite athlete but played his best basketball in a system that placed him best where 1. He could dominate the ball and distribute as he saw fit 2. would not be accountable on defense. Nash is skilled but is not the most talented point guard in the League. Barely top 10. Efficiency is his strength. He stated himself that if everyone worked as hard as him he would be out of job. Also stated that if he played Marbury 1 on 1 10 times that Marbury would kill him every time.
chitownmo 2 years ago
The grassroots game(high school and below) has alot of prospects that could become NBA players when they mature but they need to grow up not. Lance Stephenson is a Lottery pick. So is Renardo Sidney, Demarcus Cousins, Derrick Favors, John Wall, Jordan Hamilton and Xavier Henry would all be drafted from the Lottery to late 1st round if they were eligible. Kenny Boynton likely not due to size and lack of point guard experience(NBA position by size despite being a primary scorer).
chitownmo 2 years ago
The no hand checking rule will help him offensively and hurt him defensively. He has the handle to break defenders down but he finishes flatfooted, has no driving pivot finish game, and no mid range game yet. Those are bad signs. Parker came to the US with that and it helped him tremendously. Could he develop it? Yes but until he does he will have issues finishing in the NBA. European players have had trouble finishing around the hoop for years except for Pau Gasol.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Kidd improved but is still marginal in some situations by attempt and situation compared to truly great shooters. Marions is a overachieving 2nd tier player with subpar ball skills and a great motor. Barry peaked after his rookie year. No wher near the level of his father, Rick Barry. Briliant scorer in this day. 40% is not bad it is solid but the Euroleague line is shorter and also shooters are not under the pressure that NBA shooters are under on average. Defenders close out alot faster.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Could he improve? Yes but there is no absolute certainity that he will improve it to where 1. It is no longer a weakness 2. Improves other areas of his game 3. It cannot be countered by certain defensive strategies(physical play. bumping, stunting, rotations, etc.) Seen him make mistakes on the defensive end and in isolations that a player of his "calibur" should not make regardless of age especially if I.Q. is one of your strengths.
chitownmo 2 years ago
If you do not have elite level athleticism, ball skills and basketball I.Q. you will not succeed. Rubio has sound I.Q. in some areas but not all. LIke I said he could be an elite passer but his game is no where near complete. Needs major refinement.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Only 60 could be drafted and 100 on average are considered actually for the draft and free agency that season regardless of class. Most NCAA players are not good enough to create their own shots facing or posting up nor could defend on the ball in isolations on the NBA level. Look at the weak crop of prospects this year. Only a few are considered possible stars(Griffin, Monroe, Harden, Rubio, Evans, Warren, etc.)
chitownmo 2 years ago
NCAA basketball is a conundrum. The vast majority of world class talent is in the high major conferences yet the majority of those players have marginal careers in the NBA. A few excel and become stars and legends. Shows the difficulty to compete in the NBA season in and season out. There are over 4000 players in D1 another 3500-4000 in D2. How many of those players do you actually believe are good enough to play in the NBA?
chitownmo 2 years ago
Euroleague big men are weak on the ball. Most are help defenders at best. Majority have no lift off the ground with above average core strength at best. Marc Gasol is 1 of the few that has solid strength. Bargnani is a prime example. Cant cover post down low with his subpar strength and torse width and does not have the footspeed and footwork on defense to guard skilled and athletic bigs.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Rubio's shooting technique is subpar. Shoots flatfooted on set shots. Literally no mid range pull up game. Wrist technique curves on average attempts. Little eleveation on finishes(crucial to finish in the League unless the adopts Nash style finishses even then wil have to pick and choose when to finish. Nash is no primary finisher in the League either). He is skinny but there are numerous American players the same age and younger that if you did not know you would think they are grown men.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Passing skills are vision are not in question. 43% in ACB? How many attempts? Under what situations? How consistent? Streaks? Bursts? Yeah Euroleague defenders are not NBA level defenders on average in size, athleticism and pure talent. Littered with players that are either past their primes or could not make it in the NBA. Euroleague big men are fundmaentally sound offensively but how many stoppers come out that league? How many other than Gasol hasve resonable defense?
chitownmo 2 years ago
Seen too many European stars that were suppose to be NBA stars. Kukoc was in the same predicament that Rubio was in back in 90. Sound player but not the player that scouts thought he would be. Nowitizki is an All Star but has serious flaws. Bargnani is a bust. Rubio could be good but cannot call him a superstar yet. Pampered in the Euroleague and has not faced superior players and athletes on a consistent basis.
chitownmo 2 years ago
T. Kukoc is a European legend and did a good job holding his own at his time with the bulls, and nowitski if it wasnt for him and jason kidd they woudnt be in the play offs this year and Bargnani is actually playing good ball atm.
platnium1811 2 years ago
Rubio could become a double digit assist passer in the League with the right players but can he score in the NBA consistently? Can he handle the contact without bulking up and possibly lose speed and quickness? Can he guard penetrating guards? Will he succumb to European transition problems? Can he carry a team by himself(true mark of a superstar)? This are few quesions that he has not answered so far.
chitownmo 2 years ago
A few flaws? Wow and you question my judgement even though I am respected on a national level on the grassroots level and upwards. Forget the fact that these flaws are vital for success in the NBA. Forgot how he struggled to score in the Olympics(8-32 overall). Forget the fact that Euroleague talent is not the NBA no matter what Europeans may boast and pout about. Kid could be good never said he could not but will have to wait and see.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Wish he could play in the Nike Youth Summit with the other kids his age. Give him a slight taste(not grown men but NBA calibure and potential players) of what he will face in the NBA after Wall burns him several straight times down the floor off the dribble. Banged on the wing by Lance Stephenson(6'5 225 lb shooting guard beast).
chitownmo 2 years ago

Not a franchise player.
chitownmo 2 years ago
The Nash comparison is slightly off. Nash is a far superior shooter. D'Antoni's system also made Nash look better than he actually is. Good player but not an MVP talent. Won the awards on technical circumstances(team system). Rubio could be good if used as a pass first point guard that has help on defense to cover for him. If he plays for a subpar team he will get eaten alive on defense by quick guards and will struggle to score. He has not shown the skills to score in the League.
chitownmo 2 years ago
Raving over what? He can't jump. Not fast. Can't shoot. Only scores against weak defenders. Skinny. The comparison to Pete Maravich are so off base it is disrespectful to Maravich's legacy. The Nash comparison is slightly off. Pete would run rings around this kid. Rubio can pass, make a flashy move and Sorry the NBA is a world away from DKJV. Euroleague is essentially a haven for former NBA players and players who could not make it in the League.
chitownmo 2 years ago

He could be a Nash like player(style) but a star is uncertain.
chitownmo 2 years ago
NBA calibur players. He is an average athlete overall which will hurt him against guards like Paul and Williams. Rose will break him down all day long. Rubio could be a good guard if he improves his skills but I do not see alot of upside and frankly most European players are average talents. Fundamentally sound yes but are average talents.
chitownmo 2 years ago
I have no reason to lie. I scout in this industry and have only been impressed with Rubio on a moderate level. He does have natural court vision and passing skills but he has serious flaws that need to be improved if he wants to be a productive player in the NBA. His shooting technique subpar in all stages. He has not shown any refined go to moves off the dribble(prerequisite for scorers). He has long arms but gambles too much on defense and has not shown the ability to play on ball defense
chitownmo 2 years ago

Having speed does not mean you know how to break down the opposition off the dribble.

gervtheman 3 years ago
great quality and great players, thanks for the footage, but I don't believe, he'll make it in the NBA. He's skinny, he's got to work a fucking lot to become faster and stronger and then he'd be ready for this challenge tho. One more thing - he's very smart to not entering the draft of 2009. He know he's not ready yet and gotta get more experience. Pure talent.
Barteekkk 3 years ago
Do u realize that he is 18 years old?? there are many skinnier players in the NBA i don't know of any off the top of my head but this kid has the talent and poise to play USA ball...don't believe me? watch how he was playing in the Olympics especially against the USA, plays calm and doesn't get phased even by Americas best.

Looks like the next Jason Kidd, with a more graceful game but without the strong build. I could easily see him leading the NBA in assists in a few years.

you're all talking about athleticism. but a player has to have more that. if it was only about athleticism, gerald green would be a star in the nba and larry bird would have never made it to the nba. think about it.
derrobert 3 years ago
Yes but athleticism is valuable. Skills are the most important. But you have to face reality. Americans are the best in the world at this game for a reason. Kobe is the best in the world because he is the most talented and worked hard to reach this level. Lebron is once in generation prospect. There are no player in Europe with that kind of potential. Sorry there are not.
chitownmo 3 years ago
Of course he won't rival Bron or Kobe he's a different type of player altogether so stop just bringing their names up. Call me crazy but Ricky reminds me of Jkidd & Pistol Pete, he will be that type of NBA player, not the one who makes spectacular plays or shows amazing athletiscism,no, he will be a very good point guard able to read the game get the team involved, knock down jumpers when required. He has a good future
Scooby2791 3 years ago
Defensive specialist? Really. Never seen him make a sound fundamental stop. Gets in the passing lanes for steals, but that does not make you a elite defender. Ball stops, lower opponent field goal percantage, turnovers, force offs and lower points per game is. He has not shown that yet. How can you make a Pistol Pete comparison?Maravich was a far superior shooter and scorer at 17 as well as an adult. Rubio has not exhibited elite scoring ability yet.Exceptoinal dribble and passiing. Not scoring.
chitownmo 3 years ago
He is a great defender, he made a kid cry because of his exceptional defense. Pistol was a great passer and handler that was the comparison I was making not as an all round player, I'm not an idiot.
Scooby2791 3 years ago
Not seen him play exceptional positional defense yet. Scouting reports echo the same statement. Consistent ball hawker(steals the ball) but does not have sound defenisve footork. Tell me this: How do you believe he will do guarding the best point guards in the world on a weekly basis for 6-8 months for 30-40 minutes a night. Chris Paul one night, Deron Williams another, Jason Kidd, Baron Davis, Stephon Marbury, Tony Parker, Derrick Rose, Arenas, etc Sometimes shooting guards like Kobe and Wade.
chitownmo 3 years ago
I hear what you are saying! but its the same 4all these guards too that you just mentioned! so whats the difference, no-one can defend these guys, bar kobe, he defends consistantly, and makes guys work for what they get, and shuts guys down too! but yea back to my original point, whats the difference between ricky rubio guarding steve nash, or tony parker guarding him! id say not alot, nash will have his way with anyone!
mcgregor23 3 years ago
Who has he played in Europe that is anywhere near as talented as Chris Paul, or Deron Willams? Baron Davis would eat this kid alive offensively. Too big, too strong, too fast, too athletic, too good. People overseas forget how great NBA players are. Rubio could be a good point guard, but a dominant one? Will have to wait and see. He will be a defensive liability.
chitownmo 3 years ago
Thin build(Can he add weight and not lose any athleticism)
Personality: How will he handle playing Americans that play with chips on their shoulders?
possible NBA career statistics
14-16 ppg; 3-5 rebounds; 8+ assists; 42%-46% FG%; 76%-80% FT%; 1.5-2 steals

man he still 17 give him a break
maybe he aint that athletic yet but look at his intellingence
thats one of the most important things

chitownmo......i think rubios jumpshot is weakest..i read that he goes to the us to work on it.His mental game i think will separate him from the rest..if you watch him play against the usa..he was very poised and relax inspite of the pressure.Playin against men at such a young age has further enhanced his natural talent.
govindasantos 3 years ago
yeah I noticed on his shots he sometimes doesnt jump very much and on freethrows he kind of flicks the ball with his wrist.
man02raider 3 years ago
Lol so your not supposed to flick the ball with your wrist when you shoot?
You do realise flicking the wrist is the most important part of the shot right?
go watch some videos of brent barry shooting. rubio has nearly exactly the same shooting stroke as barry. im not saying hes a great shooter but dont judge a players shot by how it looks, but by how consistant it is.

sorry what i meant to say was he doesnt get too much of his power from his legs when he shoots I think, in my opinion, that he just uses his arms more them he should

Guys like Chris Paul were playing at 17 against there own age. Ricky Rubio is 17 playing in Spain against people older and some twice his age.
NYClienteleBaller 3 years ago 4
Paul was physcially superior to Rubio at the same age. Look at American high school basketball. I do not see what the hype is about. He is not a European version of Lebron. He is not athletic, is a subpar shooter, nor a great scorer by American standards. He could be a solid pass first point guard but a NBA All Star? Doubtful. Does not have the tools of a NBA superstar. There are alot of guards with more athleticism and potential. John Wall, Brandon Knight, J-Mychal Reese, etc.
chitownmo 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
ok this kid has 17 so what? watch all the stars including Chris Paul in highschool, they're were more athletic, this kid just knows how to pass, does a couple of steals and is a fair shooter. Spain got owned by USA yesterday. I dont believe this kid will make an impact in the NBA, i think he should stay in Euroleague, in te NBA he'll be just a back up pg, the kind that only plays in the last games of the season
gogas13 3 years ago
umm...so you're saying there are 17 year old PGs in the game who can pass as well and see the floor as well as this guy? you just put him in the same breath as Chris Paul, and you're saying he won't be anything? and you're bashing him for not being "athletic". hmm...2 time MVP of the league, Steve Nash, not really the picture of athleticism, but hey, if you think athleticism is everything, you just keep watching those AND1 videos and believing that's how basketball is played.
davestshirt 3 years ago 8
Have you seen the American players in high school? I could put the 12 best together and they would be more athletic than any team in Europe
chitownmo 3 years ago
yeah u biatch more athletic but they woul get blown out by 60 lil nigga...
yall yanks just care u jump higher lil nigga u jew biatch
BihFaca11 3 years ago
yes. and they will loose for sure against any team in europe...
jarbreikerMADERFAKER 3 years ago
Really how so? They are as big as an NBA team and just as athletic even though they are kids. No one in Europe can stay in front of Wall one on one. Tyler is a beast inside that can hit the 20 footer. Sidney can take you inside and outside and shoot the NBA 3 at 6'10. Henry is a Kobe clone. Stephenson is compared to Lebron James but shorter. Sorry I doubt that "any team in Europe could beat that." You will see at the Nike Youth Summit this season.
chitownmo 3 years ago
What are they looking at Rubio for to be? A European hope? A Euro Superstar in the NBA? Take a jab at the Americans? What? You guys are taking this too far. They are at least 10-12 kids in high school in the US right now that could play in the NBA if they were allowed to. Look at the Draft this past June. Record year for freshman entrant who should have been allowed to be drafted into the League out of high school. Everyone I mentioned would be drafted in the 09 draft if they could be.
