Read up on the behind the scenes of this movie, the Director and Producer were on a walk while filming this movie, and they saw Bruce out also, and Bolo stopped Bruce on a walkway and they had a fight, because Bolo was tired of hearing how Bruce was the best, and he thought he was, they said it lasted less than 30 seconds, Bruce put him down and he did not get up, this comes from these 2 gentleman in books I have collected on Bruce lee over the years, many people on the set back this up

I know a lot of people think that Bruce Lee was invincible and shit, but if Bruce Lee would have fought this Bolo guy for real, he would have been dead or seriously injured at the end of the fight. @egglot12 yes, in the ring and with rules there are weight classes. But in the street there are none. Curiously, street fights favor a smaller trained man. That's why Bruce could whip any sized and weight man in a real street fight with no rules.

It was said by the director of enter the dragon that bolo challenged bruce during filming when they first started making the movie. The boat scenes were the first takes to be done. And for the record, bruce bloodied up the opponent quite badly as on this particular day he was 'shall we say' stressed out. He lost weight etc due to stress in making this movie perfect hence his physical condition on set. Bolo is no dunce or a walk over and extremely fast for a big guy. both are legends.
@Gman6755 He didn't study shotokan, that was a tagline for the trailer. However, according to wikipedia, he does have Chinese martial arts training. I've seen him do some pretty good handsprings. If you want to see Bolo go all out, check out "Fist of Legend II: Iron Bodyguards". Yeah, it's a knockoff sequel, but it features some great fight scenes with Bolo.

then, there comes the introduction to mma (Lee is reckognized as the grandfather of mma) which is the wrestling jiu jitsu etc part. throw an opponent down and break a limb. as i said earlier, stop the fight before your opponent has a chance to seriously hurt you because a fight is never fair. Lee was one of the greatest in the fact that no one really knew of this style of fighting and anyone would have been caught off guard by it and easily defeated by him.
also, it was a defensive fighting style, meaning that the opponent is supposed to swing firstr allowing the hand trapping to come into play. then, on top of that, there should be no intentional blows to the face or any other hard parts of the body that could result in you injuring your hands. So, punches and elbows go to soft places like eyes, neck, stomach and groin. basically the system is set up to end a fight as fast as it begins.
it that his wing chun gung fu based technique was quite different. It requires much patience, speed and a great reflex. How he fought in movies was exactly that. Impractical movie fighting. He said he would just as soon punch you in the foot as he would kick you in the face. Kicks, unless presented with a good opportunity, are meant for the waiste down. Allowing speed. 1. they limit techniques you can use.
2. The techniques I and a lot of people use are designed to permanently maim and injure.
3. unless you fight at master rank you cannot make full body contact.

If you're saying he can't punch or fight, you're dreaming, Bruce Lee didn't fight in tournaments because he didn't like the restrictions and rules, however, he has fought on the street and won every fight. Bruce was a very fast, strong and smart fighter that could fight. He was a Martial Artist who trained his body to the limit and was able to do incredible feats, sure that doesn't show his fighting skill but he did train Chuck Norris.

Sure he was much more represented in the media than other martial artists, but he was a very skillfull and i may even say gifted athlete and martial artist, with excelent fighting and physical skills. have a nice day.

@vinnynumbnuts I kind of doubt that, he may have been raised in Hong Kong but he was born in the US and spoke English just fine. They chose Carradine because they didn´t want an Asian lead. There was a lot of racism towards Asian Americans at the time, which Bruce Lee was...so such a lead would have been considered "shocking".
China was more or less doing the same thing in their movies. White ppl were often portrayed as stereotypical clumsy dumb foreigners in Chinese movies of the era.

@ne77s well, lee played kato in "the green hornet ," did parts in "longstreet," "here comes the brides," "ironside," "marlowe" with james garner--all before the kung fu series began in '72. so the so-called prejudice towards aisian actors in hollywood--certainly there was some-- couldn't have been so great in light of these appearances. according to a vice president at abc, he spoke with lee and had difficulty understanding him, which eliminated lee's chance for the kung fu role. could be.

@ne77s i'd also like to add that if you go to fred weintraub's (he's the producer of "enter the dragon," which really launched bruce lee to fame in north america) internet site, you will see it said that "weintraub knew the movie would be a hit, but it was difficult to convince investors, who were concerned that american audiences wouldn't be able to understand lee's heavy accent." so you see, this was a problem for bruce lee in america as an actor, which, of course, he eventually overcame.

Read up on the behind the scenes of this movie, the Director and Producer were on a walk while filming this movie, and they saw Bruce out also, and Bolo stopped Bruce on a walkway and they had a fight, because Bolo was tired of hearing how Bruce was the best, and he thought he was, they said it lasted less than 30 seconds, Bruce put him down and he did not get up, this comes from these 2 gentleman in books I have collected on Bruce lee over the years, many people on the set back this up

It was said by the director of enter the dragon that bolo challenged bruce during filming when they first started making the movie. The boat scenes were the first takes to be done. And for the record, bruce bloodied up the opponent quite badly as on this particular day he was 'shall we say' stressed out. He lost weight etc due to stress in making this movie perfect hence his physical condition on set. Bolo is no dunce or a walk over and extremely fast for a big guy. both are legends.

@Gman6755 He didn't study shotokan, that was a tagline for the trailer. However, according to wikipedia, he does have Chinese martial arts training. I've seen him do some pretty good handsprings. If you want to see Bolo go all out, check out "Fist of Legend II: Iron Bodyguards". Yeah, it's a knockoff sequel, but it features some great fight scenes with Bolo.

then, there comes the introduction to mma (Lee is reckognized as the grandfather of mma) which is the wrestling jiu jitsu etc part. throw an opponent down and break a limb. as i said earlier, stop the fight before your opponent has a chance to seriously hurt you because a fight is never fair. Lee was one of the greatest in the fact that no one really knew of this style of fighting and anyone would have been caught off guard by it and easily defeated by him.

also, it was a defensive fighting style, meaning that the opponent is supposed to swing firstr allowing the hand trapping to come into play. then, on top of that, there should be no intentional blows to the face or any other hard parts of the body that could result in you injuring your hands. So, punches and elbows go to soft places like eyes, neck, stomach and groin. basically the system is set up to end a fight as fast as it begins.

it that his wing chun gung fu based technique was quite different. It requires much patience, speed and a great reflex. How he fought in movies was exactly that. Impractical movie fighting. He said he would just as soon punch you in the foot as he would kick you in the face. Kicks, unless presented with a good opportunity, are meant for the waiste down. Allowing speed. A head kick simply takes way too much time.

Bruce Lee never fought anyone in his latter life because everyone was afraid to fight him. watch interviews. I've heard it so many times. lol also compition junkies have to realize that many martial arts master and practitioners (myself included) do not like to enter competitions because
1. they limit techniques you can use.
2. The techniques I and a lot of people use are designed to permanently maim and injure.
3. unless you fight at master rank you cannot make full body contact.

Bruce Lee was so fast that he could immobilize an opponent in seconds. He was a trained fighter. Early on in his life he got into a lot of trouble in street fights. Several Martial Art master disagree with Bruce from teaching other race Martial Art and so they fought and Bruce won and was free to teach Martial Arts to any race. It's about how you intercept their strike, that is why Lee don't believe in style any more and created Jeet Kun Do. Yes we never know if Lee is the best fighter because there is no proof but if he he trained his body to for power, speed, and endurance to intercepting fist.

Pancrase the greek mixed martial art has been around for 4,000 years. Even karate is mixed. In Brazil you had fighters that were Muy thai and Brazilian Ju Jitsu before Bruce Lee was even born. His type of punching is different to boxing punches. he did go on to learn to more boxing style punches though,. he was doing the straight lead followed by the rear cross for power. If you're saying he can't punch or fight, you're dreaming, Bruce Lee didn't fight in tournaments because he didn't like the restrictions and rules, however, he has fought on the street and won every fight. Bruce was a very fast, strong and smart fighter that could fight. He was a Martial Artist who trained his body to the limit and was able to do incredible feats, sure that doesn't show his fighting skill but he did train Chuck Norris.

@skywalker71903 He could have been any fighter at that time and most fighters today if he wanted to and was able to, he didn't fight because he didn't like the rules and restrictions, but the on the street he beat anyone. Even people who are black belt and have been training for most of their life have said Bruce Lee was one of a kind, and with his speed, power and agility he could have been beaten ANYONE if he wanted to.

@skywalker71903 actually, one of bruce lee's physical feats was being able to project a punching bag over 300 pounds up until it hit the ceiling with a sidekick. Sure he was much more represented in the media than other martial artists, but he was a very skillfull and i may even say gifted athlete and martial artist, with excelent fighting and physical skills. have a nice day.
