So interesting roaming around with someone discovering their ancenstry. I'm American of a mixed heritage but I know mostly my Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh history and I always wind up feeling conflicted over all the atrocities and abuse that went around since I'm descended from all of them. Strange to feel both pride and a bit of shame at the same time about that same heritage. Gotta be said though, it's mostly pride! ;-)

Mull looks almost exactly like my home country: The Faroe Islands. But they are both part of the Caledonian folding (or how it's called in English), and made from basalt, so it's probably not that strange... hehe :)

The beard is what he sports in the movie "Recovery"; David did this during a break in filming. It's at the begining of this episode, you see it being trimmed 4 the movie.

Anyway, I reckon he grew the beard out to get away from the side-burns LOL! He didn't have a long enough break from DR WHO to shave it all off when this was done.
