if he left the baseline by more than three feet to avoid a tag he is out the rules dont stipulate its to the side or above the the three feet applies

The rule does not say anything against high jumping.

The catcher was standing directly on the baseline. What SHOULD the runner have done? Just quit? Or run into him full speed like Pete Rose into Ray Fosse?

Nothing was preventing the catcher from reaching up and tagging him.
