allways and every time the same: mcl does his lines over harmonies and when he plays real improvised melodies, he plays as "slow" as every other good player out there. boring.
The thing that I like about McLaughlin is that even though hes a little hyper-active hes just a nice playful guy. I can't say the same for many fusion guitarists.
listen to John's theme from 0:35 to 1:02 then it becomes clear that John is not a rock not a classical not a flamenco not an indian, but a JAZZ -musician, basically. Later he develloped different styles on his own.
I was helping jonas, selvaganesh, and IA rigging up stuff for a show in stockholm. And i have to say that he's still as amazing with those guys as was with maclaughlin
Thanks so much for posting the information. I actaully have this on "beta" cassette and I've looking for this for so long. Do you have any more from this concert? I would like to hear "the dolphin". THanks!
I have this entire show. If you look throughout the entire show, you'll notice that there isn't much chemistry going on between JM/JH (not as usual that is).
It seems as if at this point, they were already fighting each other and JH was about to get out of Mahavishnu.
Excuse me but I´ve enjoyed this vid from first to last minute thinking they two were feeling right! more, Hellborg has some moments of magic, looking, laughing and playing free.
OKAY, you maybe right! I don´t know exactly this thing. I understand that working and travelling day and day it can exist some difficults between musicians.

Both great players but this stuff leans toward being 'freakshow-ish'.

Who gives a s**t about chemistry. This is just SENSATIONAL artistry and combo playing.

jonas is great but he's really overplaying throughout this whole piece.
umawwi 4 years ago
he has to play like this because there is no keyboard and no drums.
florafox 3 years ago
overplaying? I just believe that it adds to the wall of sound, making the melody more exaggerated.

Don't mean to start an argument, but I have the entire show. It is almost two hours long. I got it off of a Torrent file.
It doesn't take a genius to notice that there is tension between them. But them being true gentlemen, try to mask it for the sake of the audience.
prasiddha 4 years ago
There is this break in the show where JH storms backstage and takes off his purple jacket. And JM makes a joke about it. He seemed obviously pissed.
Look at the date of this performance, and look at the date in which JH leaves/quits Mahavishnu. Notice the coincidence?
