The text bubbles for this vid seem to make more sense than what the translator is saying. I wish I could understand Chinese as this makes me think I may be missing some important points from the videos I've seen because of the translations.
there is no martial art that can do something against a headlock. there are some shaolin who train their necks to be nearly immune to headlocks. but normally a headlock or a good chock is game over.
This is not intended to flame...I really feel drawn to the Wing Chun style but there is a voice that tells me, can it really be applied to full effect in a street fight?
Bruce Lee changed his fighting from Wing Chun to his own Jun Fan/JKD, because he used Wing Chun against Wong Jack Man and (from witness accounts) WJM could have pwned Bruce at least 3 different times when he got Bruce in a headlock. If Bruce couldn't pull off using WC, who can?
To answer your Jank143 question yes wing chun can be used to defend yourself on the street and if you do decide to start learning you should tell the sifu this is 1of the reasons you wish to learn. As to the fight between BL and WJM bruce lee won the fight but was unhappy with the amount of time it took to win. Imo a win is a win especially on the street.
He attributed changing from Wing Chun to JKD because of that, but actually, it is because he didn't truly learn and understand the footwork imo.
In the end, he still tried to ask Ip Man to finish teaching him the three forms (through film), but it couldn't happen because he refused to actually stay there and learn it
Bruce Lee was endeed a brilliant fighter. But he didn't learn the full WC system. I've heard from several sources that he learnt the two basic forms (Siu Nim Tao and Chum Kiu) and he learnt the wodden dummy form.
He wanted to learn the entire system when he returned to Hong Kong after some acting success, but he couldn't because he would have to stay there and practice for months/years. Would he have created his JKD filosofi if he'd learnt the entire WC system? Who knows.
One of my sifus explained to me that while we learn WC footwork and stances, in a real fight (he's bounced for 6 years after training to a high level of WC), the reflexes and concepts are what come into play the most. For example, he said, even though nobody stands in the WC stance as a conflict escalates, to bridge the gap and apply bong lop da or any a neck chop into a clinch and elbow will come naturally to a practitioner. All in the reflexes.
in addition to the other comments, you must realize Bruce was a perfectionist. He strives for the perfect body, speed, power, etc. He said that the fight took too long (3 mins he claims). If you look at the situation, he just wanted to perfect his fighting ability. WC certainly works, or else he wouldn't have beat WJM and WC wouldn't be a part of JKD as it is today.
It is also noted that Bruce still was learning Wing Chun after he had his form establiished in the states. In fact, found this from an instructor in South Philly (Phila., PA.), that alot of JKD had wing chun principles. Also, remember that it is not the style but the practioner of that style. And with real life account, it had helped me out when I was not serious about me studies. Not realizing how much it was ingrained in me, without thinking moves just flowed to get me out of those situations.
there is no rooting in boxing, it is a ring sport, wing chung is a the science of fighting in totality, all things considered, that is why it can't be used in mma.
many people fight in this way. Ive never thought about body position telegraphing strikes from an opponent. I learned something from this clip Im very pleased. I always thought about telegraphing coming only from the shoulder and elbow.
If you don't understand what he's saying, then don't comment. You're making yourself sound like a fool. BTW, he's one of the pre-eminent Wing Chun masters in the world.
He is explaining that in other martial arts, we can predict how the punch or kick is going to come by watching the movment of the opponent's body. He's not discussing Wing Chun moves.
Probably they are not Choy Lee Fut moves but Wing Chun moves which were adapted by Choi Lee Fut. Choy Lee Fut is much younger than Wing Chun thats why. Just for the record not hating or something :P
Impracticality?Hung ga and wing chun were rivals at one time but they respect each other now. Isn't choy lay the opposite and known as the rival of wing chun recently? don't you mean theoretical difference? Many styles have survived for a reason, show some respect.
What the hell are you talking about?? I never said the other systems were impractical. Wong Shun Leung was showing how some wide, hooking strikes from other systems can be ineffective in that they telegraph what the opponent is going to do. Did you even watch the video? Moron
Look you douche you mentioned that he was showing that other strikes from other systems were impractical. The man clearly makes a sow choy that both llama pai and choy lau fut use plus a hammer fist fro many others. As much as i don't like choy lay fut it is known as the rival of wing chun and have been known to defeat some wing chun sylists. If they are so impractical they would not have existed this far.
WTF?! Did you just ignore my comment?? I never said anything about not liking choy lay fut or any other styles or about their system being impractical as a whole. I was just highlighting Wong Shun Leungs point about telegraphing movements. Sorry if it came across as disrespectful
no. he's explaining how, depending on where the opponent's hands are with respect to his body and the way his body torques, you can gauge the path of his strike.
more so, he's actually explaining how the shoulder movements can let you forsee what kind of attacks the opponent is trying to do, and from that, you infer how to defend yourself.
I have seen him in the netherlands. He was amazing with his fists. He had to do everything like 10 times. Before you could see wat he was doeing. Thanks for the vid
i believe you useless idiots dont even know what a headlock is.
