You should try out Brand X, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, String Cheese Incident, The Billy Cobham George Duke Band, John Scofield, MMW....This vid kinda makes me think of someone trying to fuse rock and cool jazz which doesn't exactly work..

This guy is an incredible scary monster on the guitar and teaches how to play like Shawn Lane or Alan Holdsworth. Way to fo Derryl :)

He's using pentatonics all over the place! Someone must not be listening to or watching the same clip. He's using stretch fingerings to play different intervals than most guys and the pentatonics may not start on the root of the chord behind him, but that's still what they are.

Have to agree here, Legato sure isn't lazy, I think the classical masters would certainly disagree with you.

In fact I think actually it probably has equal footing with staccato as it actually takes great skill to make each note sound properly and in time instead of just picking it in a sort of ABC way, Yeah staccato is difficult too, but sometimes really lacks the flow and soul of legato

I think what he's missing is phasing, which is the ability to break your improvised melodies into melodic sentences and paragraphs. Music is much like a language in that respect. A masterful solo should "tell a story"! That's what makes the difference btw improvisation and mindless shredding. But I could still learn a lot from this guy. I look to Holdsworth, Henderson, John Coltrane and the like if I want to be musical.
