there are very few wild red wolves left in alaska, and it seems that each time their numbers recover, we kill them off back to endangerment. hunting is ok, when it's for food, or warmth, henit's ho you survive, but doing it for a trophy, something to hang on a wall... is not. I've seen too many people shoot something, take the head of it, and leave the rest to rot, we need to remember that e are NOT god, we dont have the right to decide which species have the right to live and which ones dont.
whats the diferrence between aerial wolf hunting and regular wolf huntingeither way your shooting it its just one is easier and one is harder if aerial hunting is bad why isnt regular hunting bad you cant make being lazy illegal
speak wisdom, we now have wolves in south west Nebraska, sadly
the battle starts over again as my father born in 1916 told as a boy seeing the last of the wolves killed for the safety of the livestock of this area. We lost 6 calves this year.
@extremeeXrement1 its just plan unethical and will eliminate the wolf population faster than traditional hunting. >.> - the wolfs will soon go the way the Tasmanian tiger did in 1937 and be no more if we kill them off to fast, its really just common sense... O.o.
i love hunting also and this aint real sporting but they gota manage them preaditors in the north and no one hunts em like in wisconsin its terrible their aint nuthin left just huge wolves everywher and the dnr wont let anyone hunt them
Why does Sarah Palin allow this to go on WOLVES r misunderstood thats all they are why dont people recongnize that Hunters always SCREW things up always have always will our wolves are in dire need of saving we will protect them with our lives SAVE THE WOLVES.
Real hunters get off their ass and patiently hunt an animal.
Planes should be outlawed... just like hunting from cars is (at least in PA).
What a disgusting practice. Wildlife management is one thing... but, we treat condemned killers better than this. And, they also tortured their prey. As some people say wolves do.
It wasn't bad at first, when wolves really were overpopulated. but now they are on the verge of being extinct in alaska because of Sarah Palin's idea of paying people for the severed foreleg of a wolf.
let mother nature take its course! who the hell are we to say what species needs killed? wolves are here for a reason.. without them there would be an over population of their prey. let them live their lives the way nature intended them to!! if any species is over populated it would have to be us humans.. but you don't see anything killing us off like we do the animals right?
Sarah Palin (aka: Cruella DeVille) should be brought up on charges & impeached for the brutality that she has dealt upon the wolves of Alaska. Her obsessive compulsive need to slaughter these magnificent animals in order to ensure that there will be plenty of trophy animals for her & her rich hunting buddies is No better than what Michael Vick did with those dogs. Both of them kill defenseless animals for profit & greed plain & simple. Please sign the petitons so that we can end this crap now.
Is there any way that we could see more wounded wolves. Its a shame when wolves are cleanly killed.Wolves need to die the same way that they kill their prey.Slow and painfully.
You all say that because of the population of wolves growing it's ok and a duty to kill them...for their sake, right?
Ever heard of Darwin's Natural Selection theory? And what about Malthus study on demographics? You can apply the same for these wolves; when their population is big enough to leave some wolves without food their number will decrease and the most adapted will survive....
I don't see anything wrong with this either, as it is in place to help manage other populations of animals. The video which shows men shooting from the plane looks quite old to me (1970s version???).
I see nothing wrong with it, they're populations are healthy and doing great.
Not a method of hunting I would use though. This is Alaska, this is our home, if you don't like thing's the way they are, try making changes in your own communities/states.
Humans have no natural instinct to hunt. Methodology is irrelevant. There is no better or worse style to hunt outside of custom. Granades, traps.. 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other..
"this is our home"
"Home" = graveyard.
"try making changes in your own communities/states" Not all states have dwindling carabou populations..
as horrible and pointless as hunting any creature is, people do far worse things to animals. like experimenting on them, bruatlly slaughtering them for meat, killing them for fur, torturing them in rodeos or gambling sports. its hard for me to understand why a person would do these things to a poor defenseless animal.
betterstructures --Actually, the reason that they are trying to "depredate" the area has more to do with RAISING prey populations as a way to boost hunting TOURISM. It's so that humans can be the top predators, and its all about money (and big ego). For me, that's not a good enough reason to destroy this endangered population in this brutal, horrifying way.
why would some one want to do this to these beautifull animals they deserve to live as much as we do!!! this is so cruel... i hate people who do this stuff to any animal!!! ugh!! makes me so mad!!
"Alaska has a stable population of 6,000-7,000 wolves which are legally hunted from August to April as a big game species.[8][87] Aerial hunting of wolves and other predators is used as a method to boost moose populations for hunters in Alaska.[88] This practice is controversial. Biologists have cited scientific logic in opposing aerial hunting, and the citizens of Alaska have twice voted against aerial hunting." Straight from wiki so disput that my dear redneck hunters
lonewolfxlll. You ever been to Alaska? The wolves hunted here legally are only within certain game management areas, not the whole state! Thes so called "independant biologists are wolf lovers! What do you think they are going to say/ And the areial wolf control only happens in "5 game units up here" in an area of 365 million acres of true wilderness, most of which is roadless, the wolf control is to help some remote villages who depend on moose and caribou! "Not sport hunters"! Ignorant ass!!!
There's no sense of sportsmanship! A wolf just walks by, minding its own business and here comes flying douchebag doing a fly by! It's just cowardly! Who's the animal now? >=3
you are mixing up wllves with humans, wolves only kill to survive, humans kill for fun or because they want to know how it feels to kill. Wolves gained their bad reputation because of the stray dogs, sometimes stray dogs form packs, they hunt the livestock but they don't calculate the amount of food they need , and people put the blame on wolves.
right on keep killing these killers as is if they were attacking you. I am not from alaska and don't plan on moving there, but have seen the devistation here in montana and I have to say kill them all because the first chance they have to get you they won't think twice...and what about the future of hunting for our children? Maybe we all should get on the same page here and look at some of the tapes and pics of the wolf kills around and maybe some of the other people will see the whole picture
Your an idiot right? It's NATURE moron! I'm a hunter with a .22LR, a .223, a .303 and a .308. I only hunt ferals. But your attitude is unbelievable. Gee wolves kill. Why dipshit? because they need to EAT! Bet your not a vegetarian. What about the cows and chickens and pigs you've indirectly killed. Preserved hunting for our children? Give me a frickin break. Preserve NATURE and keep hunting sustainable, that means we dont need to kill a SINGLE WOLF OR BEAR! Do your research numbnuts.
In the History of our country there has been more reported deaths by stags then deaths by wolves. This idea that they will hunt us down and kill us is planted in our minds as children. An inharrent ignorance brought to us by children stories where prodominatly the wolf plays the villian. So I think you need to sit quietly and dont open your mough on sugjects you know nothing about.
Wolves arent a threat to us, we are a threat to them and if you spook them and make yourself a threat, they have to protect themselves and the way they protect themselves is killing the threat.
Howcome most of you posting don,t mention the fact that we here in Alaska have the highest, healthiest wolf pop in the world, plus these wolf control hunts, "only occur in 5 game units up here"! And, wolves don,t only kill the sick, or weak! They have been seen up here killing Caribou, and eating only the tongue, and nose. These areas were chosen because the moose and caribou pop had dropped dratically. This is not to benefit sport hunters! It,s to help the natives in those remote, roadless areas!
This is interesting, how old is this film? I don't agree with the dude hanging out the window shooting at wolves with a shotgun, thats kind of unethical. It seems this guys intent was to immobilize it and then try and kill with additional shots.
If they where clean shots, no pain at all then i see nothing wrong with it. Yes i agree, if this isn't done then they get poisoned which is a slow and painful death. It not only happens to wolfs..
And don't call me a treehugger. I'm a hunter myself and I love hunting. However, hunting is about loving the nature and fair play. We all are predators so we MUST NOT put ourselves in a greater position than animals, eg- shooting from planes. It's all about 1:1 game. And then comes ethics- personally I would never kill a wolf, bear or the great African animals like lions etc, only in case of being in a situation where I either shoot or die. Learn about this more, educate yourselves!
allth3s4me- These are state licensed trappers depredating overpopulated areas. This has nothing to do with hunting, it has to do with preserving caribou and moose which ultimately feed the rest of the wolves not depredated. I understand your "Fair Chase" ideals but shooting from planes is illegal in Alaska and these depredations are funded by the fish and game to manage populations. If you look at Alaska Fish and game regs you will see it is actually illegal to hunt and fly in the same day.
Okay, overpopulation or "limiting the numbers" are just false pretences in THIS case. Wolves are perfectly fine, they don't overpopulate, they DON'T endanger other animals and kill only to survive. The only ones that kill more than they can eat are old lorn ones which is actually CAUSED by irresponsible hunting and BREAKING UP packs as well as other reasons but this is REALLY RARE. So shut the false pretences.
They could at least use proper rifles to save the animals suffering, they probably just bought the cheapest weapon they could find in their local corner gun shop...Alaska should be more strict with gun laws and stuff
Actually chevy man fish and game put this into place so there would be more Caribou and moose for people to hunt. The wolves are part of a healthy eco-system, the problem was that didn't leave enough moose for us to hunt.
but, some males habits are deadly. Get more women in top positions world wide, their will be less war rape sexism racism etc. Women control your sons, you had matriarchy before.
ha men of the human species, are just idiots, you can't continue to allow more men to call the shots women. They're stupid, and would like to oppress even the gender whom gave them life "women" They have this habit of trying to treat all living creatures like property, they lack intelligence, they usually for for their weakness "Violence" Women you know how to control your selfs, you must bring back matriarchy, and I am a man. I know men are capable of being just as intelligent
why dont all of you stupid hippies learn the facts. the wolf population has gone overboard and caused many other kinds of game populations to plunder. its simple population control. believe it or not, its in the best intentions of keeping the ecosystem equal and not bringing animals into extinction. wolves have litters, caribou, moose, deer, and sheep have single offspring... simple math, idiots.
In every eco-system the prey ALWAY outnumbers the predetors thats how its always been. The only time that isint the case is when WE overly hunt a certain prey. So the population control is a result of US going overboard. I can only wonder how many deer or Caribou in alaska are hunted for Sport.
Thats like giant monsters coming and shooting us! It's not fair that we can do that. Its just cruel! I mean sometimes we have a fair reason, but going to do it to see the suffer just isn't right! It's okay to step on an ant, but its not fair to kill 2o ants! People might say they had to, but ask why? Al I'm saying is is that you shouldn't kill something for fur ans stuff. Food is okay though. We don't want them all killed do we? SAVE THE WOLVES
And every pack kills 30 moose every winter, and even more caribou after they've trimmed the moose population dangerously low. In some areas where aerial shooting is permitted, the caribou population is on the verge of collapse. At best, when that happens the moose/caribou population is decimated for decades.
Wolves are the most efficient predators that exist. Alaska offers to repopulate states that have killed off their wolf population. Those states say no. They say that for a reason.
oh and one last thing to those who dont no already the wolve population has doubled in teh last years, and i dont mean to personally pick on you thesupergrunt, but you speak as if hunting has just came around, but we have been hunting animals since the 1st human walked this earth. god tells to hunt animals in the book of genesis. this is not hunting in my opinion but whatever, oh and by teh why i dont kill for sport i kill for natural meat provided by the land! no some steriod jacked up cow!
As the sun of parents who own a ranch i must say wolves are very pretty creatures, but only when they are managed. The past year (2007) my faimily lost ove 2,000 dollars in beef alone due to wolves killing our cow, and dont get me started on the sheep. also they killed a young boy about 5 miles away. i live in montana were there are just to many of them and know the state gives me the right to take 3 off of my ranch without a fine. so thank you to the great state of montana!
Also, the ecosystem has managed fine on its own until we came along and ruined it by hunting too many animals. The animals can manage perfectly fine on their own, and if they can't, another species will thrive. Besides, it's pretty hypocritical to say that wolves are ruining Alaska. Haven't we already ruined enough places? America is almost all cities, for one example. We're doing far worse than the wolves as far as balance goes.
For all hunters, I wouldn't even call this hunting. I am fine with you killing animals (mostly for meat, I don't like the idea of just fur, but it's not too much of a difference to me), but why not do it the right way? How is it fun to go into a helicopter, and shoot things that have no chance? At least with normal hunting, the animal has a chance to get away, so therefore I find that fair. This isn't. This always results in death of the animal.
It's called proper management of a species. They do it from a helo or plane so it can be done and the overpopulated wolves can be taken out.Its pretty hard to hump thru the bush in 10 feet of snow covering a region thats hundreds of thousands miles square.Hats off to the sharpshooters for killing them by the most efficient, effective means so they don't suffer. :) Sure beats poisoning them so they crawl off and die a agonizing death!??
Wolves belong in Alaska...they've been there since we came along with our guns and specialized killing. Some people here are saying they wreak havoc on the animals they eat. This doesn't make sense, as they've been in Alaska before humans began populating parts of it, and the population of prey animals wasn't undergoing a dive then, now, was it? I don't know how anyone could think of this as sport.
im a hunter i hunt bear and prettymuch everything u can in wisconsin. 2 weeks ago we had a wolf kill a dog and didnt even eat it.sure people think its unfair to chase a bear with a dog i dont. i want to see u run throught the woods for somtimes up to 5 hours. the dogs are doing what they love they dont do it cuz we make them if they dont waant to run we put them back in the box o well. they go most of the time but the way they do it in alaska isnt fair. but i guess kill them overpopulated is bad
This will be a sad time once the wolves are gone forever. I wish for us to be more understanding and stop hunting the animals in any place at all. SAVE THE WOLVES
that was the best wolf video i have ever seen. wish i could do that here in idaho. the best wolf is a dead wolf. you damn tree huggers feel so sorry for them, what a bout all the deer and elk they kill just for sport. any way just wanted to tell everyone that was the best clip in here. screw the wolves.
Sport? That doesn't exist in wildlife, Animals kill to survive, and they don't kill all the time, when they are full they rest, play, defend their home or mate.
I am a hunter, now I can give my cat cuddles pat my dog scratch his belly play fetch and show all the love and affection one could to his/her animals. But,when needed I can be the most ruthless heartless soul hunter with no remourse what so ever for their prey or quarry. So what catagory would all you tree hugging people outthere put me in. If people in this massage bord are saying that wolves are over populated in alaska its more likely because they know first hand
--- The bigger the area they take up the more likely they are to encounter civilization and thus people. Also the more space they occupy the more food they will hunt and then they will reproduce more. It is a repeat cycle. If the wolve populations are not thinned and if they are not hunted, then they will kill off the other wild animals and livestock. Which would eventually cause them to starve as well, not only this but they would also lose their fear of humans and attacks would be more often.
well we are taking their land and food. for sport and comfort. they are just hunting were they have always hunted and we are moving onto their hunting ground and home.
I know this comment will be scanned and then flamed, but just so you know my position. I am a wildlife conservationist(A.K.A. A hunter) and do not like seeing needless killing or suffering of animals. However wolves in Alaska are being killed like this for a reason, wolves by their nature are aggressive and since they are ussually in packs they also consume large amounts of food.
Wolves in Alaska are becoming overpopulated which means they need more and more territory and more food. ---
Well your right. Hunters are the original consevationists. They foot the bill for more land and habitat restoration than the federal government.Alaska has a wolf overpopulation threatening many other species. This depredation is necessary so that others may live.Sad that people see the wolf being killed but do not see the muskox or caribou being born.Alaska is the largest state and the least populated per acre.Wolves have adapted to Alaska's entire landscape and are choosing to go near people.
all right someone came to their senses and started shooting these animals they are so over numbered and undermanaged for the damage they cause, if only we in the continental us could get some of this we need management of this species
why don't you not worry about what happens here in alaska you dumb bunnyhuggers. screw wolves they eat everything on gods green earth, and they don't even eat all of it, they'll kill like 20 sheep and eat like 3.
f u. Wolves are natural predators they can kill as much as they want imo. I mean, i see nothing wrong with hunting them but that still doesn't mean one should go out and shoot 30 or 40 of them for sheer pleasure. and to do it form a plane is like in this is just downright unresponsible. Shooting any animal from a plane is unresponsible considering the chances of your bullet going astray and causing unneccesary pain to the animal.
wolves are eating machines..they kill hundreds of livestock..elk..deer..its ok to hunt these predators..come to wyoming..where we get to hunt em with a predator tag..all year long..legally..TED NUGENT FOR PRESIDENT..
I understand that controlled culling sometimes has to happen, and i have worked with wolves. You should at least have the decency to face the animal that you are going to kill!!!!
I love wolves but....ever lived in Alaska? Ever have a wolf kill dogs in your neighborhood? Big city idiots who don't know anything about nature need to STFU. Wolves DO overpopulate, and need hunted. Most of these animal sympathizers are probably "pro choice". Makes me puke.
copynut ur an ass, I dont know about anyone else but theres way to many ppl now. id be happy if there was less fighting, less ppl, and more wolves thank you.
wow! this is absolutly horrible. This type of hunting takes no skill what so ever. I am by no means an animal activist or anything, but if a hunter takes pride in this then he is an embarrassment to the sport of hunting. Chasing them in an airplane untill they can't run anymore? Gotta be kidding me.
what sickens me is that most people kill animals just for FUN! look if you want to shoot something for fun, take up airsoft of paintball with friends, not killing innocent creatures just for skin or trophies. its cruel.
Humans are more important than wolves, period. There are hundreds of thousands of Alaskans who depend on caribou and moose for basic sustenance. When they've eaten, we can think about the wolves.
I have hunted my whole life and i disagree with hunting animals like this and not to mention we had almost wiped them out im sure they arent overpopulated at this point.
I give 5 stars to this video for the worst reasons. Not the wolf that should put down on this video... (Airborne)Greetings to all those who see on wolves the amazing creature they are.
i am just wondering why people want to kill them off.....THEY ARE FINE!!! WE ARE THE ANIMALS! i cant believe you filthy creatures kill just because its something to do. you discust me.
What is your alternative for game management? Allow the caribou and moose to be decimated? Folks who subscribe to your "non-intervention" philosophy are either very short sighted or out of touch with the issues.
i can sorta understand normal hunting but flying in a olane thats just not fair i mean last time i checked a wolf cant run 200 miles an hour anyone who does this is just an asshole and chassing them until the cant run anymore thats just savage personally i think some humans could learn a lesson from wolves DONT JUST RANDOMLY KILL ANIMALS
I have lived in Alaska for over 15 years. You need to live here and get out into the bush (not just in Anchorage) to understand the impact wolves are having on moose and caribou populations. If you do not live here, do not pass judgment.
Hey if that's the case, maybe we shouldn't have done anything about Hitler. Or stopped the slave trade.
There is no reason for this. No such famine exists and maybe if you fancied studying wolf ecology, but of course you don't care for science or nature - just human interest.
Do you not understand the huge difference between animals and man?? This is a way to reduce populations. You say in the video that they don't die right away. Well, you obviously don't understand anything about hunting. A lot of animals hunted do not die right away. Do more research next time, and I would like you to E-mail me with a real way to manage these populations!
shut up you asshole!!!!!!!! i did and that is a complete LIE!! wolves HELP the eco system!! they get rid of the old deseased, sick useless elk and carabu so that WE don't get it and not just that but wolves CAN"T take down these strong animals. Elk are my favorite animal but i don't want the rest of MY animals be killed, deseased, and slowed down by old sick and weak animals of the herd!!! don't say what you don't understand!!
just to let you know, 2 out of 3 wolf kills are for sport. I wolf will take a perfectly health elk down without a problem just for the sport. But you wouldnt know that becuase you have never been there. They ruin elk hurds
well..we get to hunt these eating machines (wolves) all year long under a predator tag in wyoming..where the wolves feed on livestock and elk and deer and whatever else gets in their eating machine way..and did u say useless elk..?? and u totally blew the spelling on caribou...lol
hey u know that wolves oveerpopulate fast. they kill 5x as much livestock as we kill them. livestock is what WE eat to live. they take advantage of the animals that cant run away cuz theyre locked up. plus wolves skins look nice when put on the living room wall.
Haha. Overpopulate? We have driven them from over 90% or their traditional range. They cause less than one percent of "livestock" losses. Wolves look nice in the wild running free and hunting not on your bloody wall.People kill wolves so they can kill the wolves natural prey( caribou etc). How is that for ironic? You have to expect animal-human conflicts when we continue to overpopulate and destroy territory.
There not as cute as they look its all fine and dandy untill there overpopulated and hungry,i grew up in northern ontario where there used to be a bounty on there head but it was ther for a reason packs of wolves were coning into town and killing dogs and cats right in peoples yards .Yes i agree it is nice to see a wolf but it is also nice to see moose deer and your dog in one piece.
i definatly agree with you but this way is creul! wolves don't kill with malace like humans they would NEVER do anything likw that. you stragitise and plan what this is is murder!
I hunt but this is not hunting. This is a slaughter. If packs and herds need to be thinned so be it, but not like this. A shot gun? At least find someone that can handle a rifle. This shows a great deal of disrespect for wildlife and the masses that do hunt.
For the record there were three unanimous disapprovals from the Alaskan public sent the the Governor to discontinue this exercise. These unanimous decisions were wittingly ignored.
Here's how it works, we kill deer, cows, chickens, ect. for the meat. You can't eat wolf meat, and in this day and age you certainly don't need the fur so there's no point in killing them...
Its amazing how many people say so much but know so little and how many are sucked in by glossy propaganda such as this video. As a life-long Alaskan for over 50 years, it is obvious these folks know nothing but will surely take your money to support their cause. Turn of the sound and enjoy the great video.
to tell you guys the truth hunters have helped animals to they dont just kill so dont think hunters are killers. Hunters hunt for the sole perpose for food. God even gave us teeth for meat and asked us to eat animals thats why he made them.
First of all, it's been illegal to shoot wolves from the air for about 10 years. Secondly, if the population of wolves is allowed to expand while the population of caribou and other prey is declining, the wolf population would collapse and suffer a slow starving death. The natural cycle is much more cruel than what this video presents.
The first thing to cause decline in herbivore number is weather conditions second is lack of vegetation, third is human interference including human hunting which, by the way, totals a considerable amount more than what wolves take.
I don't see how people think they have the right to take the right of ANY animal. Nor do I see how any person could. Especially wolves. They're just so majestic and beautyiful.
I hunt lots of animals, but i never can or will be able to bring myself to kill a wolf, unless it attacks me. I guess it jsut because my dogs are 90 some percent wolf
I'm pretty sure trying to kill a wolf with a bow would be much more unpleasant for the animal than being killed by a shotgun. I'm just saying, pretty inconsistent response.
I was against the shooting of wolves, considering they are my favorite animal, until I did my own research and even talked to hunters as well as non-hunters about this very topic. Over west the wolf population has over-populated. The wolves are killing ALOT of livestock and causing alot of problems with people so, they have to reduce to shooting them. Montana is one state that is very much over populated with wolves. Hunting is the only way to maintain any animal species.
Over population in a HUNTERS point of view is a lot different then over population in a NATURALISTS point of view. Montana is one of the FEW states that actually HAVE wolves, therefore the mere EXISTANCE of wolves could be considered a wolf-over population problem. I'd like you to expand on the 'problems with people" comment, as wolves generally STAY AWAY from people.
And just so you know, ALASKA (the place arial killing is allowed) is a WILD area. the wolves live the way they SHOULD live there. Only people who want to kill for FUN kill wolves from the sky there.
please do MORE research. Don't JUST take it from the hunters point of view. LEARN for yourself.
Because humans cant control our own population, thats the only real reason so, since we can't and we need lands, food, etc we just kill other animals instead of find a real solution to the problem.
This video absolutely cracks me up how misleading it is. I have been to Alaska many times and have been with on wolf hunts and this is not how it's done. First of all, it is illegal to shoot them from the air. You can chase with the plane, but the plane must touch ground before you can shoot. Secondly, the wolf population in Alaska is out of control. They have wolves coming out of their ears and without hunting the wolves dominate and eat themselves out of house and home. Humans are nature too!
naturally wolves will watch you to make sure you don't go near their families. sides, you were in their territory after all. and don't try callin me a yahoo, i go camping every other week. oh, and back in the 70's, there weren't as many people; wolves were more cautious around us back then because they didn't see us as much.
Yh its true wt u say psgalaskagirl, about not being in alaska, but i i think its equally "funny" how plpl can just cruelly torture natures predators, justifying this with speeches like yours. Nature knows best, not u, and if they were left alone in the first place, they wouldnt have to kill city animals to stay alive. Anybody that defends this type of hunting, in my eyes, doesnt have a heart.
i totaly agree with u, and i think some of the exuses here are stupid... like dayofreo... no they are not merciless cold blooded killers, they kill to survive as nature made them... if u take a closer look at the video ull see whos the merciles killer...
screw wolves, and coyotes. they are merciless cold blooded killers who kill for fun. do your homework ,watch some unbiased footage before thinking,'oh the poor little wolf'.what about all the poor little children and unprepared hikers who get attacked EVERY DAY by wolves, coyotes and cougars. wake up people!
Folks!! No one said this was hunting. It is not. It is State sanctioned cost effective predator control. Airborn sameday hunting is illegal in Alaska. The numbers of prey and predator are cyclic over very long periods. Without predator control the folks here who rely on Caribou and Moose for food would suffer. It would be the same as you going into your Costco and being told there was only 10% of the normal volume of food available for the next 50 years until the numbers rebound.
Wait, so you're angry that wolves are hunting as they always have and not changing to suit human society? So, because they don't fit nature as you think it should be, their population should be "thinned out"?
there are very few wild red wolves left in alaska, and it seems that each time their numbers recover, we kill them off back to endangerment. hunting is ok, when it's for food, or warmth, henit's ho you survive, but doing it for a trophy, something to hang on a wall... is not. I've seen too many people shoot something, take the head of it, and leave the rest to rot, we need to remember that e are NOT god, we dont have the right to decide which species have the right to live and which ones dont.

Its a shame when wolves are cleanly killed.Wolves need to die the same way that they kill their prey.Slow and painfully.
margretmorgan 3 years ago
You all say that because of the population of wolves growing it's ok and a duty to kill them...for their sake, right?
Ever heard of Darwin's Natural Selection theory? And what about Malthus study on demographics? You can apply the same for these wolves; when their population is big enough to leave some wolves without food their number will decrease and the most adapted will survive....
Leave nature do it own job!

I don't see anything wrong with this either, as it is in place to help manage other populations of animals. The video which shows men shooting from the plane looks quite old to me (1970s version???).

I see nothing wrong with it, they're populations are healthy and doing great.
Not a method of hunting I would use though. This is Alaska, this is our home, if you don't like thing's the way they are, try making changes in your own communities/states.
dagwoodak 3 years ago
"they're populations are healthy and doing great.
How did wolves ever manage before this?
"Not a method of hunting I would use though"
Humans have no natural instinct to hunt. Methodology is irrelevant. There is no better or worse style to hunt outside of custom. Granades, traps.. 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other..
"this is our home"
"Home" = graveyard.
"try making changes in your own communities/states" Not all states have dwindling carabou populations..

as horrible and pointless as hunting any creature is, people do far worse things to animals. like experimenting on them, bruatlly slaughtering them for meat, killing them for fur, torturing them in rodeos or gambling sports. its hard for me to understand why a person would do these things to a poor defenseless animal.
frizzalisious 3 years ago 134
betterstructures --Actually, the reason that they are trying to "depredate" the area has more to do with RAISING prey populations as a way to boost hunting TOURISM. It's so that humans can be the top predators, and its all about money (and big ego). For me, that's not a good enough reason to destroy this endangered population in this brutal, horrifying way.

What do you think they are going to say/ And the areial wolf control only happens in "5 game units up here" in an area of 365 million acres of true wilderness, most of which is roadless, the wolf control is to help some remote villages who depend on moose and caribou! you are mixing up wllves with humans, wolves only kill to survive, humans kill for fun or because they want to know how it feels to kill. Wolves gained their bad reputation because of the stray dogs, sometimes stray dogs form packs, they hunt the livestock but they don't calculate the amount of food they need , and people put the blame on wolves.

In the History of our country there has been more reported deaths by stags then deaths by wolves. This idea that they will hunt us down and kill us is planted in our minds as children.

Learn about this more, educate yourselves!
allth3s4me 3 years ago 7
allth3s4me- These are state licensed trappers depredating overpopulated areas. This has nothing to do with hunting, it has to do with preserving caribou and moose which ultimately feed the rest of the wolves not depredated. I understand your "Fair Chase" ideals but shooting from planes is illegal in Alaska and these depredations are funded by the fish and game to manage populations. If you look at Alaska Fish and game regs you will see it is actually illegal to hunt and fly in the same day.
betterstructures 3 years ago 23
Okay, overpopulation or "limiting the numbers" are just false pretences in THIS case. Wolves are perfectly fine, they don't overpopulate, they DON'T endanger other animals and kill only to survive. The only ones that kill more than they can eat are old lorn ones which is actually CAUSED by irresponsible hunting and BREAKING UP packs as well as other reasons but this is REALLY RARE. So shut the false pretences.

why dont all of you stupid hippies learn the facts. the wolf population has gone overboard and caused many other kinds of game populations to plunder. its simple population control. believe it or not, its in the best intentions of keeping the ecosystem equal and not bringing animals into extinction. wolves have litters, caribou, moose, deer, and sheep have single offspring... simple math, idiots.
chevyman1223 3 years ago

PeekaRat 3 years ago 3
And every pack kills 30 moose every winter, and even more caribou after they've trimmed the moose population dangerously low. In some areas where aerial shooting is permitted, the caribou population is on the verge of collapse. At best, when that happens the moose/caribou population is decimated for decades.
Wolves are the most efficient predators that exist. Alaska offers to repopulate states that have killed off their wolf population. Those states say no. They say that for a reason.

RedMoonDarkWolf 3 years ago 5
Also, the ecosystem has managed fine on its own until we came along and ruined it by hunting too many animals. The animals can manage perfectly fine on their own, and if they can't, another species will thrive. Besides, it's pretty hypocritical to say that wolves are ruining Alaska. Haven't we already ruined enough places? America is almost all cities, for one example. We're doing far worse than the wolves as far as balance goes.
Thesupergrunt 3 years ago 4
For all hunters, I wouldn't even call this hunting. I am fine with you killing animals (mostly for meat, I don't like the idea of just fur, but it's not too much of a difference to me), but why not do it the right way? How is it fun to go into a helicopter, and shoot things that have no chance? At least with normal hunting, the animal has a chance to get away, so therefore I find that fair. This isn't. This always results in death of the animal.
Thesupergrunt 3 years ago

I don't know how anyone could think of this as sport.

drunkonlove 3 years ago
--- The bigger the area they take up the more likely they are to encounter civilization and thus people. Also the more space they occupy the more food they will hunt and then they will reproduce more. It is a repeat cycle. If the wolve populations are not thinned and if they are not hunted, then they will kill off the other wild animals and livestock. Which would eventually cause them to starve as well, not only this but they would also lose their fear of humans and attacks would be more often.

Shooting any animal from a plane is unresponsible considering the chances of your bullet going astray and causing unneccesary pain to the animal.

God even gave us teeth for meat and asked us to eat animals thats why he made them.

poor wolves this is a horible way to die!!!!
Why woild any one want 2 post a vidieo aboout man killing such a beautiful animal???
wolflover8549 3 years ago
First of all, it's been illegal to shoot wolves from the air for about 10 years. Secondly, if the population of wolves is allowed to expand while the population of caribou and other prey is declining, the wolf population would collapse and suffer a slow starving death. The natural cycle is much more cruel than what this video presents.
manheim2222 3 years ago
Manheim2222.

Es una crueldad sin limites la de cazar animales!Matar solo por el gusto de sentirse
superior, por deporte o por que les gusta
matar! NO ! Hay que respetar a los animales
como a los seres humanos!
Great video!Stop killing animals!
SweetSusiCat 3 years ago
Se deberia de respetar mas a los animales que a la personas.

asi es, yo toda mi vida he sido un amante de los lobos.

I'm pretty sure trying to kill a wolf with a bow would be much more unpleasant for the animal than being killed by a shotgun. I'm just saying, pretty inconsistent response.

Lets hear it for biased propaganda and those who sympathize with it. Well done everyone.

I am against wolve hunting, humans dont eat wolves whats it worth? the fur? or its just a stupid game?
Chromegrillz 3 years ago 3
I was against the shooting of wolves, considering they are my favorite animal, until I did my own research and even talked to hunters as well as non-hunters about this very topic. Over west the wolf population has over-populated. The wolves are killing ALOT of livestock and causing alot of problems with people so, they have to reduce to shooting them. Montana is one state that is very much over populated with wolves. Hunting is the only way to maintain any animal species.
AmericanHunter1428 3 years ago
Over population in a HUNTERS point of view is a lot different then over population in a NATURALISTS point of view. Montana is one of the FEW states that actually HAVE wolves, therefore the mere EXISTANCE of wolves could be considered a wolf-over population problem. I'd like you to expand on the 'problems with people" comment, as wolves generally STAY AWAY from people.
roxywonder36 3 years ago
And just so you know, ALASKA (the place arial killing is allowed) is a WILD area. the wolves live the way they SHOULD live there. Only people who want to kill for FUN kill wolves from the sky there.
please do MORE research. Don't JUST take it from the hunters point of view. LEARN for yourself.

i agree....

Get back to school and learn why populations of certain animals have to levelled from time to time.
theevilunholyzach 3 years ago
Because humans cant control our own population, thats the only real reason so, since we can't and we need lands, food, etc we just kill other animals instead of find a real solution to the problem.

I'm assuming you're a hunter as well, am I right?

How come the defenders of wildlife won't let people who really know about this subject post? Is it because your cause is pointless?

This video absolutely cracks me up how misleading it is. I have been to Alaska many times and have been with on wolf hunts and this is not how it's done. First of all, it is illegal to shoot them from the air. You can chase with the plane, but the plane must touch ground before you can shoot. Secondly, the wolf population in Alaska is out of control. They have wolves coming out of their ears and without hunting the wolves dominate and eat themselves out of house and home. Humans are nature too!
Ddubya77 3 years ago
naturally wolves will watch you to make sure you don't go near their families. sides, you were in their territory after all. and don't try callin me a yahoo, i go camping every other week. oh, and back in the 70's, there weren't as many people; wolves were more cautious around us back then because they didn't see us as much.
Wolffriend87 3 years ago
This is not honorable.

Anybody that defends this type of hunting, in my eyes, doesnt have a heart.
sLaVeTOmAiDeN 3 years ago
i totaly agree with u, and i think some of the exuses here are stupid... like dayofreo... no they are not merciless cold blooded killers, they kill to survive as nature made them... if u take a closer look at the video ull see whos the merciles killer...
dragonalias 3 years ago
screw wolves, and coyotes. they are merciless cold blooded killers who kill for fun. do your homework ,watch some unbiased footage before thinking,'oh the poor little wolf'.what about all the poor little children and unprepared hikers who get attacked EVERY DAY by wolves, coyotes and cougars. wake up people!

"they are merciless cold blooded killers who kill for fun."

Humans are the twisted heartless blood killers.
Not the wolves.

what about studying them? its even BETTER. hunting?*shakes head*
piestroodle 3 years ago
AKMcode 3 years ago
Wait, so you're angry that wolves are hunting as they always have and not changing to suit human society? So, because they don't fit nature as you think it should be, their population should be "thinned out"?
