  • Rick Buckler ALWAYS reminds me of Dennis Waterman in Minder! lol

  • Bruce sings into a microphone stand with no microphone :/

  • Just fucking horrible!

  • great song, pretty sure i have heard part from a betting advert aswell 1:21

  • weller still cant dance but the jam remain one of englands best bands period- weller was a song monster during this era- noone touched his writing moods and tunes at his peak

  • the "Dig the new breed" version it's just fucking awesome: watch?v=Tf4hRkw94RI

  • I love Paul, but no one ever talks about Bruce. I think his hammering bass was a huge part of The Jam's visceral appeal, IMJ.

  • @dsincox both true heroes, i'm 14, i picked up guitar because of Paul, and recently bass because of Bruce's influences, true legends.

  • @dsincox both true heroes, i'm 14, i picked up guitar because of Paul, and recently bass because of Bruce's influences, true legends

  • paul weller is my hero. he's grew older gracefully-huge inspiration to me.

  • sorry, that should be the end of thick as thieves from the setting sons lp is the intro from drfeams of children played backwards if that makes sense.!

  • intro. thick as thieves played in reverse.

  • Get a life scooterboi17 nice Pedophile user name

  • After Lennon and Mccartney, Weller has to be the next greatest songwriter!!

  • One of the best, class always

  • Easily one of the coolest bands ever. When I think back, I think of The Jam, not the Clash or other stuff people talk about.

  • DIGGAA ...ICE BEARS ARE WALKING AROUND MY HOUSE. PAUL IS IN GOOD SHAPE.... SUOMI FINLAND NORTHERN EUROPE WHERE IS SNOWING ....

  • did they shoot going underground video on the same day as they did this

  • love it

  • i think we found out this is the day the music died. everyone born on that day seem to be tools

  • why do they look the dogs bollocks after all these years there the fuckin coolest band of all time !!!! i fuckin them forever

  • i think we figured it out then. anyone born march 1980 started ruining music since they all seem to hate this. . so its not x factor its them listenin to shit music

  • i fell in love with the dreams of children.......what the fucks he mean by that ?

  • @bolabus if you cant figure it out id go back to school! Its pretty obvious what hes referring to!

  • @salvadory ok ,am listening .

  • I remember, it was a double A side with Going Underground, but didn't get any airplay

  • @fletchzz not much but its just as good i think

  • who cares when you were born, if you think this songs crap you seriously need to re-examine your musical taste, so sod off

  • when i was born Scott Walker was #1 in the UK so suck on that!

  • I was born on the the day this released, mummy mummy you should have had me a couple of weeks later when the Nolans were no 1.

  • You lot need councilling !!!

  • I was born in 25th March 1980 and this was nr 1 in that time according facebook .. I don´t like it

  • me too 03/25/1980 it sucks...

  • what the hell... me too, number 1 on my b day. But this song sucks

  • me too 25 march 1980

  • acording to facebook this was at no 1 on the day i was born 20th march 1980!

  • same here lol

  • rock 'n' roll were people like Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent and Elvis Presley... NOT the clash

  • fair comment, both band were great, the jam produced some great records,as did the clash i just think mick jones is very underrated as a song writer, equal to weller and all the other song writers of the time

  • Pop quiz...... what song is "sampled" on this?

    It's played backwards.

  • Thick As Thieves.

  • Insert thumbs up smillie.

  • Taxman by the beatles....but at least its not as blatent as it is on start everything down to the guitar solo is a rip off!lol

  • @princeofthemods69 listen to start if you think his is taxman :L

  • better than the clash partially the stuff strummer wrote not that good, but mick jones yes as good

  • Sorry don't agree with you there but there wouldn't be much in it...:-)

  • BETTER THAN THE CLASH ????????????ho ho ...

  • @bolabus the Clash were so bored with the USA that they went and lived there, Unlike the Jam who were still accessible

  • amazing song s meredith

  • better than the clash ?? come on m8, be serious now..... come a very close second though

  • Yep one of my favourites :)

Have to agree with bili tales from the riverbank is a classic.

  • classic jam record

  • I agree with the guy who said this was was better than Going Underground - which is a terrific tune in its own right. My 3 favourite Jam singles are this one, Eton Rifles and Start! Album tracks i like are Wasteland, Scrape Away and Boy About Time.

  • Or Town even!

  • its boy about town lol and i love the choice of songs dude the intro to scrape away is amazing

  • the jam <3

  • I love that guitar riff. Plus i want songs like this to be from the bands of today, i miss them WAHHHHHH!!!!

  • much much better then the clash but still good.

  • WAY BETTER THEN THE clash!

  • @glvespa

Saw them both live in 1979/80, in the same theatre. Not even close. Clash utterly blew them away. Sorry and all that...

  • @glvespa The fact that you feel the need to even compare those 2 bands shows what an idiot you are. Well done.

  • @Nigelxman I second that 100%. Both bands were great! As were and are thousands of others! If you really need to compare bands which are doing such different kinds of music you must have a very poor understanding for music! I pity you, glvespa! :(

  • @flipflopper Well said my friend. Well said. -)

  • @glvespa It's Than not then unless you meant "then" in which case you're stupid- not your. I love the Jam And even have this single but -not way better. It's Clash not clash.

  • @glvespa Not WAY better, I think they are about the same, both GENIUS

  • @SirBanuTheFourth agreed.

  • @glvespa I love both .

  • Still cracks me up after all these yeasr when the caravan door shuts on Bruce at 2.22, awesome band

  • for me the masterpieces as double a side are "tales from riverbank" its a fucking masterpiece with the envolved final piano and guitar of paul weller. amazing showing that weller its a fucking genius. Though that song its fine, but not compared with tales...that its most sober.

  • Would love to see these reunite for a tour would be awesome

  • One of the most underrated and under-appreciated bands of that era - at least in the U.S. (They were huge in Britain but barely made a ripple here.) Easily in a league with the Clash.

  • one of the best songs ever

  • You will crack on your dreams tonight!

  • my favourite jam song.

i love the drums during the outro.

    just amazing.

why aren't these guys classified as post-punk? they're like a happy joy division.

  • I prefer this to Going Underground and I'm Glad it was listed as a AA side. Strange Town/Butterfly Collector, Start/ Liza Radley, Absolute Beginners/ Tales from the river bank should of been AA sides too. If it wasn't a single NUMBNUTS what album was it released on?

  • THIS WAS NOT A SINGLE

  • It was the double A side with Going Underground, was originally due to be the A side until a pressing plant accident in France released it as a double A side.

  • Foxton changed his suit from the Going Underground vid,Paul tucked in his scarf and the director put leaves in the studio??Inspirational, you would never think it was filmed on the same day!!

  • lol

  • It reminded me of Absolute Beginners

  • modcheff this is the best jam single ever no question. g

  • we've got penny lane horns, who are you melody lines, revolveresque drop ins....an excessively loud bass, good lesson in stringing out one basic song idea. i wanted to hear it though, has something. thanks for the post.

  • Inspirational Music at its best !!

  • The best Jam song that no-one ever remembers.

  • I never forgot it...awesome track.

  • @SiddoNotts I like Carnation, that's quite a relatively unknown song.

  • @TheNicholas0202 cos its pish

  • @SiddoNotts not so my friend! this is one of my favourite jam songs!, along with in the city. when i listen to these songs it brings back memories of the thatcher years , the miners strike , the falklands war , the uncertainty of what was happening in this country. but especially eating raw sprouts from the garden cos mi dad wo on nights n in bed and mi mother had fucked off somewhere else ! hard times, but i crawled out the shit ! just!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I loved everything Paul wrote with The Jam. I don't think any Jam fan could say any one song is better than another cos we loved them unconditionally...this was more than the music, this was someone speaking for us and who gave meaning to our lives...

Thanks Paul for getting me through my teens! Don't think I would have made it without The Jam...

  • I can't choose between this and Going Underground, they're both incredible songs for different reasons. Maybe that's why this one was supposed to be the single and Going Underground the B-side and then the record company exchanged them!

    Beautiful outro...magnificent bass as well!

  • Don't get me wrong, Going Underground is a total classic But this is superior. Going Underground was more commercial and suited the mod revival at the time hence why it jumped straight to number one(nothing to do with the free single with the first 100,000 copies sold).I like to think Dreams of Children was a pressie for those that were Jam fans since 77..

  • Killer tune! The bass is the bomb. Still sounds fresh, and much better than going underground.

  • they were the 1st band to play 2 songs on top of the pops as they would only play going underground if they could play this track as well.

  • Holy fuck this band is amazing. Why they were never as popular in the states as they were in the U.K. is a testament to the shitty music tastes here. U.K music is just better, period.

  • We got screwed in the US, or maybe not. The Jam was always there for those who could find it. Trouble is no one was playing them. I was lucky enough to go the UK as a 10 year old, my older cousin was all about The Jam, and almost 30 years later, my kids are appreciating this music today. At least I'm doing something right.

  • this song rocks my socks. timeless, really.

  • memories......young faced boy became a man to this record.much better than going underground

  • I didn't know this existed.Thanks. I heard this was originally the A-side

  • It was a double A side, Paul Weller preferred this song to Going Underground :o)

  • Yeh,i prefer it to Going Underground too..Great song!

  • I sincerely prefer Going Underground! :D This song is cool as well!

  • Thats such an aggresive bassline. Love that.

  • Paul Weller is genius

  • One of my fave Jam numbers, almost Penny Lane with the horn and even now the Rickenbacker sound still makes me grit my teeth

  • great menacing song to sing on the streets of any town and city in Michigan.

  • the jam for ever

  • Please add Rickenbacker to your tags - classic Jam - thanks for posting.
