weller still cant dance but the jam remain one of englands best bands period- weller was a song monster during this era- noone touched his writing moods and tunes at his peak
sorry, that should be the end of thick as thieves from the setting sons lp is the intro from drfeams of children played backwards if that makes sense.!
i think we figured it out then. anyone born march 1980 started ruining music since they all seem to hate this. . so its not x factor its them listenin to shit music
fair comment, both band were great, the jam produced some great records,as did the clash i just think mick jones is very underrated as a song writer, equal to weller and all the other song writers of the time
I agree with the guy who said this was was better than Going Underground - which is a terrific tune in its own right. My 3 favourite Jam singles are this one, Eton Rifles and Start! Album tracks i like are Wasteland, Scrape Away and Boy About Time.
@Nigelxman I second that 100%. Both bands were great! As were and are thousands of others! If you really need to compare bands which are doing such different kinds of music you must have a very poor understanding for music! I pity you, glvespa! :(
@glvespa It's Than not then unless you meant "then" in which case you're stupid- not your. I love the Jam And even have this single but -not way better. It's Clash not clash.
for me the masterpieces as double a side are "tales from riverbank" its a fucking masterpiece with the envolved final piano and guitar of paul weller. amazing showing that weller its a fucking genius. Though that song its fine, but not compared with tales...that its most sober.
One of the most underrated and under-appreciated bands of that era - at least in the U.S. (They were huge in Britain but barely made a ripple here.) Easily in a league with the Clash.
I prefer this to Going Underground and I'm Glad it was listed as a AA side. Strange Town/Butterfly Collector, Start/ Liza Radley, Absolute Beginners/ Tales from the river bank should of been AA sides too. If it wasn't a single NUMBNUTS what album was it released on?
It was the double A side with Going Underground, was originally due to be the A side until a pressing plant accident in France released it as a double A side.
Foxton changed his suit from the Going Underground vid,Paul tucked in his scarf and the director put leaves in the studio??Inspirational, you would never think it was filmed on the same day!!
we've got penny lane horns, who are you melody lines, revolveresque drop ins....an excessively loud bass, good lesson in stringing out one basic song idea. i wanted to hear it though, has something. thanks for the post.
@SiddoNotts not so my friend! this is one of my favourite jam songs!, along with in the city. when i listen to these songs it brings back memories of the thatcher years , the miners strike , the falklands war , the uncertainty of what was happening in this country. but especially eating raw sprouts from the garden cos mi dad wo on nights n in bed and mi mother had fucked off somewhere else ! hard times, but i crawled out the shit ! just!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved everything Paul wrote with The Jam. I don't think any Jam fan could say any one song is better than another cos we loved them unconditionally...this was more than the music, this was someone speaking for us and who gave meaning to our lives...
Thanks Paul for getting me through my teens! Don't think I would have made it without The Jam...
I can't choose between this and Going Underground, they're both incredible songs for different reasons. Maybe that's why this one was supposed to be the single and Going Underground the B-side and then the record company exchanged them!
Don't get me wrong, Going Underground is a total classic But this is superior. Going Underground was more commercial and suited the mod revival at the time hence why it jumped straight to number one(nothing to do with the free single with the first 100,000 copies sold).I like to think Dreams of Children was a pressie for those that were Jam fans since 77..
Holy fuck this band is amazing. Why they were never as popular in the states as they were in the U.K. is a testament to the shitty music tastes here. U.K music is just better, period.
We got screwed in the US, or maybe not. The Jam was always there for those who could find it. Trouble is no one was playing them. I was lucky enough to go the UK as a 10 year old, my older cousin was all about The Jam, and almost 30 years later, my kids are appreciating this music today. At least I'm doing something right.
Rick Buckler ALWAYS reminds me of Dennis Waterman in Minder! lol
