1n 1968, on a furtive visit to the magazine stand at the local drug store i saw pics in a mag of a very, very young terry funk. talk about babyface. gimmick of the article was that his brother and father were afraid he was being sucked into wrestling veteran heels too soon. in 1978, attended a show in detroit, in which the funks vs abdullah and shiek created an incredible bloodbath.
That uppercut forearm of Dory Jr. is one of the most high impact strikes I've ever seen. I saw him hit Mike Graham with one, and sweat flew into the second row ringside. I was a worker and I would watch footage of Jr over and over trying to get every nuance of how he threw that uppercut. Harley Race, Brisco,Dory Jr., Graham, Les Thornton, Billy Robinson, and Tony Charles were the best technicians I've ever seen. Add Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit to that list also. Like CadillacL said, WRESTLING.
Sadly, most of the current generation would think this is boring. They should take a look at this and learn that wretling isn't all about crazy drives and high impact moves that will make you a cripple by the age of 40.
@Sargebri Couldn't have said it better myself. I think there IS a audience for classic wrestling, wich had its share of brawls back in the day. Unfortunately, WWE & TNA only cares about the "entertainment" & storylines.
@CadillacL : Well, not only that, it seems like BAD entertainment and storylines are all they can produce... I could live without too many matches like this on one show, but the entertainment part isn't good like, say Memphis, it's just bad and unconvincing, played out by rejects from gay porn...
@Sargebri : Well, somewhat in the current generation's defense, a match like this was booked to be kind'a boring. I mean, to convert a young kid to liking this kind'a stuff, you'd start out with showing him really good stuff... this wasn't booked as a match to draw money with, it was a Saturday morning squash...
I think the reason this video is available is because this was a tape sent in from Amarillo to Detroit to promote Dory Funk,Jr on Detroit TV. The particular Detroit TV show this was on is one of the Detroit shows that have been preserved.
Dude I Live In Amarillo lol.......... Umm I Know Terry Funk Has Most Of Them, I Believe If U Asked Him About It He Would Let U Get A Peep At Them, Hes A Real Kool Guy
This brings back memories. My dad worked out at ch10 back then and I and my brother would play in the ring during the week and then on saturday morning go watch it live. Ofcourse it was taped to be shown later that evening. Now that was wrestling unlike this crap tghey have now. I could be wrong but I though I saw myself and my brother sitting there in the front row but its hard to tell without a good look at the audience.
VERY rare footage...didn't think there was any Amarillo left. Shame and disgrace so much old wrestling footage has been destroyed.

And the jobber did a nice job selling as well. Good smooth work, probably trained by Jr.

This is when wrestling was REAL - no choreography, no fake drama.

This is really rare footage as there is very little surviving film of the Funk's Amarillo promotion left.

I used to watch this stuff when I was a kid. The Funk Brothers were the shite back then. That was in El Paso, TX.

Notice how unintrusive the commentary is? It makes the fight so much more enjoyable. They knew how to do it then.
