yamato didn't really perform. they expected too much of this obsolete weapon system (battle ships), in the end she was sunk by a few american airplanes which weren't even 1/4 her weight in metal and not nearly 1/6 the cost to build. aircraft carriers were much more effective weapons.
if you want to know about brave ships & sailors, look into taffy 3, USS Johnston (DD-557) & USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413). they fought against the yamato & the ijn center fleet. yamato was forced to turn back
Played battlestation pacific yesterday and in Okinawa mission i had duel against Yamato whit my Iowa battleship... i lost 2 cruises and Iowa almost blowed up.. thanks to my landing ship Yamato stopped and wasen't able to to move so i flanked and bombed every singel shit on Yamato.. That was one hell of a battle
You praising a ship that hardly saw any action until the last months of the war! Did not shell any Americans, Did not sank any ships! Our bombers in less then two hours of battle sunk Yamato! It took 12 bomb and seven torpedo hits to sank it!
@ 0:46, is it me or is the bridge architecture based on traditional Japanese buildings? With the way the corners "Swoop" up ( to ward off demons?) seem very similiar to buddhist temples.
RIP Yamato. Though I'm american, all hands lost to sea deserve respect.
the YAMATO was the lagest ship ever made, larger then Bismark and even more deadly with 4 tri mount 18 inch guns, the pride of the japanese empier R.I.P.
@AcomsRazor1776 the yamato was among the largest ships ever made during ww2: 72800t fully loaded vs queen mary and queen elisabeth at around 83000t. however, It IS the biggest battleship ever, and it's sistership, the Shinano was the largest aircraft carrier during the war. :-)
@Theacorda the battle who sunk yamato and rocket warfare make obsolete the use of a battleship.Battleship "spirit" is survived in aircraft carriers.See it like Samurais(or other melee unit of medieval times) against rifleman.
Japanese soldiers and sailors believed that they were samurai (and in a way they were), or in the very least wanted to honor their samurai ancestors, and would make ceremonial rights to the samurai, either to honor them or become samurai themselves.
So the creator of the video was probably playing off of that, by showing samurai and then ww2 Japanese soldiers and sailors, as if they are the next generation of samurai
@Starspalac it's a tribute to the warriors during the HEIAN period...BUSHIDO HARAKIRI and is a suicide code to fulfill their honor to the emperor. that's excatly what a lot of the japanese troops did in the pacific rather than be captured alive. the japanese air force pilots went to thei deaths that way. tora tora or divine wind

@Starspalace Yamato was a prince of the ancient Japan, that's the why of those pictures, the thing that gave the name to it, Yamato. Such as the Musashi was given the name of a famous warrior
... even if its radar fire control system for its mainguns was not that good the Yamato still had spotter planes for exact range finding and bearing and that would spell death for any direct BB confrontation with this ship!
And how well did that work for them in the one battle surface action she was in? Yamato against an Iowa class, hands down one of the Iowa classes would have put her under,
The Iowa's guns would have had a very hard time penetrating the armor on the Yamato. The Yamato's guns are significantly higher caliber, and its armor can deflect that caliber. If it ever scored a hit on an Iowa, it would be catastrophic--the Iowa's armor can be compromised by its own guns.
Hell, I love the Iowa as a ship, and with its superior gun-laying radar, it probably would score more hits on the Yamato, but it would take a very long time to sink it.
they did a study years back that the yamatos 18.1 inch shell fired at max range the spaceing would be around 2 miles off the iowa radar fired 16.1 would be 10 feet
Guys who cares how long the Yamato and the Bismarck were cause both nations were allies as Nazi-germany and Japan were with the italians the "axis of evil".
However i I would measure in pure firepower and armour the Yamato is a super battleship while the Bismarck would be rather classified as a battleship cause the Yamato simply had more firepower and armour and if ever they would have confronted each other in a direct fight the Bismarck would have had a very hard time ...
The Largest battleships ever made were all made by japan. the guns were the biggest, no country before or since has made a battleship of that scale.
The Yamato was beautiful, it's history flawless to the very end. It's end was one fitting for any battleship that size. Even as it rolled over, the guns were still blazing, as none of the crew left their posts...
Japan was the last country ever to fight the United States as true equals...
It was a joint effort. The final blow was done by Russia. The Russians from the East, the Americans and everyone else from the west.

most of the heavy artellery of the yamato was looking foreward and the yamato was not as maneuverable as the bismarck so the bismark could fire all her heavy artellery and drive along the yamato so she couldnd use all of her heavy artellery. thats why speed is more important then 10 meter more or one canon more.

Yamato has 6 barrels forward and 3 aft for her main battery. Bismarck has 4 and 4. Both ships could only fire all their guns at targets off to the side, so Im not seeing your point.
The reason why Bismarck looses out is that she has a lot of trouble getting through Yamatos much thicker armour at any range, where as Yamato with her heavier can pretty much penetrate Bismarck with impunity.
Bismarck was 3 knots faster, but she was not more manueverable.

ever heard of something like 'angular rate'
Yamato didn't need to be as fast as the Bismarck, since she just turned her rudder 4 degrees and still had all of her 9 18 inch guns pointed on a fast vessel.
