THE SIGHTSEEING HELICOPTERS HAD JUST TAKEN OFF AND WAS ABOUT 50 FT IN THE AIR WHEN TAIL ROTOR DRIVE AND CONTROL WAS LOST. THE PILOT EXECUTED A POWER ON FORCED LANDING TO THE OCEAN THE TAIL ROTOR GEAR BOX FAILED AT THE CASTING AROUND THE INPUT DRIVE GEAR AND THERE WERE SIGNS OF LOGJAMMING ON THE INTERIOR OF THE CASTING. THE DRIVE GEAR WAS NOT RECOVERED FROM THE OCEAN.
You know, rather than amateurs incorrectly speculating on what happened on a helicopter crash that took place over 20 years ago, maybe you should just read the NTSB report and find out that it was a tail rotor drive failure.
mail rotor , if it was tr it would go nuts before crash , it looks like it lost a pitch link on one of the blades , if you watch the blades one of them was way out of tracking and fully loaded so down it came ............
Enstrom Helicopters had tail rotor drive shaft failures. There's some footage missing where the chopper leaves the ground, so you can't see if anything was struck by the TR, but you can see the second the anti-torque goes because the tail jumps to the right. The guy ends up letting ithe MR stall with low rotor rpm and it falls into the water.

@BombriderKong I don't really care...
This is how the text was on the NTSB's website, I'm not about to retype everything.

T/R failure the helicopter would yaw Right. not left. and a T/R failure in an Enstrom is not violent. Engine Hicup and a pilot losing control?
