so what does it mean if the eggs are infertile? does that mean they wont hatch? and what do you do with the eggs? my iguana, shes only over a year old and shes going to lay eggs, i have no clue what to do about it! :( please help :s
I have a rescue that I rescued in April. With her previous owner she laid 43 eggs and had bad MBD, She had to get vitamin injections, etc...
She is gravid again, almost 2 yrs later. This is my first time with a gravid iguana. I took her in for x-rays so I know for sure. Looks like atleast 50 this time. She is huge and ready at any point. I made her a box that she spends most of her day in just digging around and sleeping. The doc said her bones look great!! Can she become egg bound?
i have a ig and dnt know if it is a male or female.. is 5yrs old and never laid eggs. so I think its a male but he does not have big jouwls or spikes under the legs. can u give me any advice?
@queenofthemara usually if by 5 yo they haven't laid eggs their a male but u could have a sneaker male who looks like a girl to sneak in and mate with the girls when the big males are fighting lol look under the back legs if they have the line of spikes form the hip to the knee its a boy
Fixing iguanas?! They lay eggs like it or not??? I am certain they dont tell you that when you buy a lizard. Sadly from what I have read online about lizards in general many dont live that long or get to that size to worry about such things. Even if I cant figure out Bintys sex am learning alot from you! Re: Grandmas room. A person and not a lizard? If so I am surprized. Older people often dislike lizards etc. Alot of women do too. Neat woman if she gets along with them!
@CatpurrRobertaBobbi yep theres ALLOT they dont tell u cause if they did most people would never buy one, binty is all male his jowls are not as big as they should be cause he went into mating season at 1yo & was chewing on everyone! so i had to get him fixed alittle too young but he will prove hes a very dominant male if needed :)
I was wondering... My ig is only 1y 5m old and apparently she is gravid, should I get her fixed? I've never laid eggs with iguanas, only smaller reptiles, so I wasn't sure of the safety level. Thanks:)
And also, will she be sad afterwards like she's missin' out on laying if she is fixed? Like menopause?
@chroslyn yes if you can find a great reptile vet who does this kind of operation ALL the time then do it cause u risk her life every year during egg season, but only allow it to be done by a reptile vet who does this op all the time & only in the morning so they can watch her breathing all day, then u MUST be allowed to take her home that night & watch her breathing for 12 hours after the op, keep her very warm to get the gas out of her system
@chroslyn let her belly hang cause the stitches will hurt for weeks, after 5 to 7 days i put just alittle neosporan on the stitches to make them soft & so the skin doesn't pull & hurt so much but no sooner then 5 days or it could not scab over right, do not let them get wet & they will need to come out in about 6-8 weeks
@chroslyn or you can make her an egg box, but it will need to be exactly right of she may not use it, she could reaborb the eggs especially if shes not been mated but if she gets egg bound she will need to be rushed into the operation or die. the box will need to be hidden alittle, packed with clean topsoil or play sand, use a brand new undertank heater to heat it to exactly 87 degress and add enuff water so it will pack so she can dig holes
thanks dude for this video..and CONGRATULATIONS dude your now a father...hahaha. :D ..JUST JOKING JUST WANT TO MAKE YOU LUAGH FOR A SECOND.^_^..THNX FOR THE VIDEO.
they were empty eggs we dont breed them but yea if they are healthy they can start to make eggs after 1yo during the first part of the year during egg season it was scarey i never thought she could have so many in her! i was freaking out when she reached 40 and was all but begging her to stop lol now a days all our rescues are fixed cause mating season is a huge strain on them & they can die if not kept real healthy with vet check ups every year.
I had the nightmare of an eggbound iguana, rushed her to Dr. Spendel....the eggs were fused together and she never would have been able to lay them, I believe Darry has the eggs now. I was lucky, I got her to the vet in time to save her life, she is healthy and happy and as fiesty as ever. The photos of Charly's spay is on AIC in the photo section.
hi denise, yea wow that is scary! i know so many igs die every year from things like that cause most people who get them can't or dont care to spend the money to get a serious problem like that fixed. i know by the time babygirl laid so many eggs she had scared me cause they just wouldn't stop coming i thought at the time she would maybe have 10 or 20 at most.... i was lucky she didn't have a problem. yea the AIC group is such a great resorce!
42 eggs! wow! I am so scared of the day when my Igg may become gravid...She exercises, eats great, and is healthy- so I am hoping for no problems...still very nervous!
yep always have to worry each year but using a wide variety diet of fresh foods, using megaray uvb lighting also makes a difference and you can use Nutribac DF to help them digest and get the most out of their food & it helps get rid of salmonella then once a year full check up really helps, but you can also get them fixed its best when they get gravid the first time but only by a reptile vet who does them ALL the time
well if its a planned operation maybe $300 or so but if its an emergency like if she became egg bound then anything up to $1000 to save her. just make sure the vet does this operation ALL THE TIME not once in a while, then only allow it to happen in the morning so they can watch her breathing all day then u MUST be allowed to take her home & watch her alnight they can stop breathing up to 12 hours after the op, u will need to get her a soft pillow to lay on or two rolled up towels for her belly
to hang inbetween cause it will be very sore with stitches that will need to come out in about 6 weeks also know that unless they get every tiny bit of the ovaries out a tiny bit can reattach & start to growing eggs again the next year only she wont be able to lay them so a 2nd op will be needed to finish the job, its rare but it does happen so make sure u have an expert vet do this op, all of our rescues are fixed at NC state U & never lost 1 or had a regrowth yet in almost 10 years
usually about 1 1/2 years old and on some years they might lay just cause its egg season or they might reabsorb them or they can become egg bound then you have to get them operated on real quick to have the eggs removed or they will die
anywhere from age 1 on.... the female will continue to get a bigger belly while slowing down on eating and then later on stopping all eating about 2 or 3 weeks before, if you think they have eggs then you should goto the vet for an x-ray to be sure then u must build a very exact egg box for them to use it must be just right or they can become egg bound and die if not operated on to get the eggs out and spay the iguana
nope they are empty eggs cause we don't mate them cause they import 750,000 baby igs every year so we dont want to add to it cause we can't find enuff good homes for our rescues now
i know i had no idea she had so many and how they could all be in one iguana! even if she was 5 foot long. well they were empty eggs she just laid cause it was egg season, we dont breed them we do rescue and rehab and try to adopt out unwanted igs
3, Binty and Gizmo who were given away as carnival prizes as babys they were 2 of 6 we helped save out of the 200 they gave away and died with in a week or two, and i have Woody who was caught running wild in Va. beach back in 99-2000 & couldn't be rehabbed into a nice pet he is a very wild male so he is one of our sancturary iguanas & we'll keep them for the rest of their life, we have more in our Nc. foster homes too but i just have 3 myself, i adopted Binty but foster Gizmo & Woody :)
Any idea on how to get a new born iguana. I've wanted one so bad and I thought it would be neat to raise it from that young and I think the bond that would be made between us would just be awesome.
i'm not sure but alot of really young ones dont make it thats why the ones in the stores are usually 4 to 6 months old or more and even they can die too since they dont get much care while at the stores usually but it can take one from a couple weeks to a year to gain their trust but then you have to work on it the rest of their life to keep it but if you do they can be such a great pet but afew can't deal with being a pet like my Woody then its harder to live with them but their still great
Honestly it's to hard to tell right now but I don't think Rex is the wild kind which makes it alot easier for me considering he's my first of hopefully many iguanas. I think he's starting to rely on me for protection too :)
Hey i just bought a new born iguana last week. Its only 8 inches long from head to tail. Anyways your local animal store should have them but you have to ask what day they will be importing new iguanas
Actually I was able to get one too. He's incredibly tiny and his length doesn't do him justice because for his size, his tail is just ridiculous, it's almost 3 times longer than he is snout to hind legs. He's about 12 inches long though
nope i bought it new at lowes its cleaned of stuff in it for use in kids play areas, you can add dirty for less weight just dont use potting soil cause it has alot of those little white beeds they are not good to get in your igs mouth and she will be digging and getting some in her mouth the main thing is its big enuff and heated to the exact temps 86-87 degrees with enuff water added to make it clump so she can dig holes might want to me it feel hidden so she will relax & use it Good Luck!
Well, over the past couple of days I've called about a dozen different local animal hospitals and the lowest estimate for neuter/spay was roughly $200. I think I'll get a male and I'll get him neutered. i just hope that if i get him neutered it will prevent most of his potential aggression. i'm also wondering if males still show their breeding season colors even if they're neutered? i think the orangish-red highlights look cool.
Trust me, i have considered all of these things and more many times and the only thing that really concerns me is whether or ot to get it spayed/neuterd and to choose between a male or female
oh ok yea, well you know each has their own personality & alot of males can bond with a male owner long as you dont get a female ig that would come between u two like with my male godzilla & now binty we have a great bond now babygirl came between me & godzilla but binty hates my female rescue gizmo so me & him are close males are usually more impressive but if u get one that doesn't like u or don't want to be a pet nothing is wrost then a male ig but female igs bond with male owners good too
I know, but I'm only 15 and I'm not exactly rich... I already have other reptiles that I enjoy, but I'd really like an iguana. My parents have told me that I am responsible for all of the costs of the iguana because they pay for most of my other pets. They definetely wouldn't want to pay for an iguana to get fixed, and I don't have that kind of money. I'm stumped because i don't want to have to deal with mating season agression or possible egg binding in and iguana.
How about save up & build or buy a large set up like 6'x6'x3' buy the megaray combo lighting, uvb meter, temp gun, nutribac DF & herptitvite. Find a good reptile vet who doesn't charge alot then once you have ALL of that find a local rescue in your area who will adopt an iguana to u cause you'll already have the setup & vet first then see if they will help u get it fixed or have one already fixed u can adopt, i know all our rescues are already fixed & ready to be adopted but u have to be ready
for them, as we check that u have a set up, read & know everything u need too & have a good reptile vet then we try to find one u like & that likes u & in afew weeks if it works out then great if not we try another one, i started out with smaller lizards who still need vet care & worked my way up to an ig also u have to think are u going to college, military, will u be able to keep this animal for 10-20 years? u cant have them in some cites & apartments when u move out then what?
its very hard on igs to lose their home & owner so its just something to think about cause ur 15 so you oculd be moving out in 2 or 3 years to do what, go where cause we see alot of parents stuck with an iguana they dont want cause their kid had to leave it to go to college. just something to think about
yes i have thought this over thoroughly and when i go to college i will probably go to a local one so i don't have to live at a dorm and i can just live in my parents house until i graduate and then move on.
try looking on petfinder, com & see if theirs a ig rescue near u & see if you can work with afew to see if u like 1 & it likes you then try to foster it & adopt it if ur both happy they really grow on u or get a baby & treat it great spend a ton of time with it & socialize it good & hope for the best usually if your giving them everything they need they will love u for it just be ready incase its a girl & one day needs an egg box or to be fixed, many times they lay or reabsorb the eggs
nope thats all, thats why i tell people you can spend $1000 a year on them iguanas are expensive exotic animals and need alot of care i have spent more then that on ones who got sick or were a rescue in a years time if think about it first if its too much then dont get an iguana maybe a BD would be better but all pets need a regular vet check up once a year. i mean alot of people spend that much on video games or other stuff so its not that much to spend on such a wonderful animal
well you cant tell a boy from a girl when they are a baby so you would have to adopt a little older iguana and get her "fixed" or find an iguana who is fixed and up for adoption.
cause they are an exotic animal so everything costs more & more dogs and cats are done plus they have to really be careful as reptiles dont do well being put to sleep its very easy to give them too much & they stop breathing cause they are reptiles not mammals i know you want an iguana & i'm glad your asking alot of questions first cause thats always the best thing to do but if right now you can't afford all the care u really should wait until u can for the animals sake
i know you would feel real bad if you got one & got attached to it & then had to watch it die cause it got egg bound or hurt & you couldn't afford a vet, its why when i was younger i had smaller reptiles that still needed vet care but not so much other stuff & i worked my way up to an iguana & even now i worry about Woody he just had an operation to fix him & now he might need another cause he may have a tumor in his leg or cancer so i might have to work more to make more money for his vet bills
it might end up costing my $1000s to save him or if he has cancer i might not be able to do anything to save him but next is Bintys turn for his yearly check up & he is alittle over due cause i've had to spend so much on Woody lately it gets expensive real quick sometimes you can spend $1000 at the vet in no time & they still need food, lighting, heat & everything everyday, hey even little lizards can get sick & need alot of vet care too & should be checked for parasites in them
nice video, very imformative. i dont get my pets from the pet sore, i adopt from shelters, i got my orange tabby almost a year ago from a no kill shelter
ahh yep all of our cats and dogs were strays who found our door over the years and the last cat she would sleep with my first iguana they were good friends u can see on 1 of my videos and she lived to be 23! Godzilla lived to be 10 & we have many more up for adoption in Nc. on petfinder, com just look up Nc. and triangle iguana rescue always looking for a good home for them :)
Thanks :) yea she was my Babygirl after all lol and yes we were lucky she did so well but she was such a healthy girl. Now we fix all our rescues with the help of the vet school at Nc. State U where they train students to become good reptile vets. :)
well i didn't let my igs breed cause theres already way too many to find good homes for now but some i put in a jar of alcohol to preserve and take to talks for people to see how big iguana eggs are and the rest i freezed and then thru away.
well they can lay every year but it doesn't mean they will lay every year, some years they might not make eggs, some years they might reabsorb them but it only takes once to become egg bound and then without an emergency operation they can die a very painful death and also die if one egg gets broken while inside them they will get a huge infection and u end up with either a dead ig or a HUGE vet bill if they can even save her its always a gamble
oh no, as it said in the video the eggs were infertal so no babies, we do iguana rescue & they import about 750,000 baby igs to north america every year so they have been a throw away pet for over 20 years now & we can't ever find enuff good homes for the ones we have so i sure don't need 42 more babies! lol i just show her laying so people can see you have to make them an egg box very exactly they way they want it or they won't lay & could die so igs are very high matainance & expensive to own
yea i know thats why we have been doing iguana rescue and education since 1999 and on the video and in the info it says 42 infertal eggs so they are empty some igs will lay eggs anyways and i wanted to show the box and this is what to expect maybe every year if you have a female iguana but i'm glad you know good enuff to say not to breed them :)
oohh ok i get it, i didn't know if you thought babygirl was a rescued ig or not. i had her since she was a baby. yea its a shame what people do to these beautiful animals. i was once called to come get a little 2 foot iguana who was locked in a little rabbit cage and thrown in a dumpster, i had to clean all the cardboard she ate out of her, teach her how to walk and to stop when she came to an edge and not fall off. she had every color in her even a tiny bit of purple on her neck
strange question, couldnt really tell from the vid but during the egg laying did you notice if she went through a tonic state, with some reptiles you find that they go complitely out of it and you can actually touch snakes or some crocs without them responding.
not saying you should do that though, lol, thats just cruel.
i looked for that & nope she never went that deep she was so wore out from not eating for her last 2 weeks she had to sleep on me everynight to get comfortable but i'll say she was busy laying but alert that i was there but i did try to back off so i wouldn't worry her but i did have to dig the holes for her as her front legs were so wore out from digging for weeks as she practiced making holes & hiding them if u look on the video u will see her move her head to look at me when i rasied the lid
nope they were infertal cause theres too many baby igs out there now to find homes for so sometimes like with Babygirl in the video they lay eggs just because its egg season and theres only fluid in them so i use them for educational talks in a jar of rubbing alcohol so they dont rot. but some people in the countries they come from do eat the iguanas and the eggs but i'd reather have them as a pet but thats just me lol
I've been breeding beardies for some time, and I now have two juvenile iguana's who from what I have noticed look like a male and a female, I would love to breed them so I'd like to know should I be doing anything now while their young to prepare? Their not baby baby's their about 2 - 2 1/2 years.
Yep she was my Babygirl, i had many 7 years of training in her & she did shows & talks all over the east coast, to Ca. & back she loved all the attention maybe 70,000 people in her life she was very smart but just before her 10th bday she got cancer & it took her really fast the vet couldn't do anything for it and she died in my arms an hour after we got home from the 3rd trip to her vet... there will never be another one like her but i'm glad she didn't suffer to long but i still miss my girl
well when they are a baby you can't really tell but some long term owners are able to tell after observing the animal for a good while 30 min to an hour and just by the way they act and move but even then its not 100% i have been able to tell afew times like when i got Babygirl after 45 mins something just said it was a female and she was, but after about 1 yo they can start to show jowls alittle and males have spikes on the inside of the thighs see my photo album @ myspace,com/lizardtail1
hey, i have a ~4 year old iguana, just found out she is a female and ive never seen her lay eggs, never found any either. recently she started walking around my apartment in an agressive manner, looking for a place to hide I guess. She keeps going under my bed and behind the tv but i didnt know why so i put her in her cage for the night. is she getting ready to lay eggs now?
it is possible the only way to know for sure is an x-ray at the vet but if she is and doesn't have a place to lay those eggs she could become egg bound and die so i'd run her in for a look cause alot of females die this way. good luck let me know how it goes
like it says in the title she was 2 yo. and yes its hard on them but they kinda go into a trance almost like a croc and just start laying but they still stay alert enough to know whats going on around them and they like to be hidden when laying.
well she was my 2nd ig way back when i was still learning how to care for them and every year females make eggs for egg season and they either lay them, reabsorb them or become egg bound and need to be operated on or they will die. I didn't let her and my male mate because i didn't want babys but when i found out she was making eggs i read on how to make a box good enuff for her to lay the eggs in and i filmed it cause it was the 1st time i had a reptile lay eggs
i was just starting to learn enuff to do help others learn and then the group i was in started to do iguana rescue and educational talks and i thought this would show what to expect if you have a female iguana and how hard it is to make a box and get it right and also how hard egg season is on them so you must keep them very healthy and a yearly check with a vet, so this video is apart of my volunteer work.
We tell people they should not breed iguanas cause they import 750,000 babys every year to north america already, they are very complex yet wonderful exotic animals that are easy to love but very hard to care for and expensive too.
like i said at the top i didn't let them mate cause i didnt want her to have a bunch of baby igs i wouldn't be able to find good homes for so they were empty eggs

Nice vid-glad you made one with an IguaNERD lay'n Eggs:^D
I was wondering Iggy has (layed?) eggs 3 times. First about 15, 2nd about 10 and, 3rd about 7. I heard that if there is no male around that they may quit laying eggs? BTW do all iggs lay there eggs at the same time of year??
well sometimes they will lay or reabosrb the eggs inside whither theres a male around or not. babygirl laid the eggs in the video only once every other year she reabsorbed. usually they lay around jan. to march but since alot of babys come from ig farms now its hard to say cause they could be hatched at odd times of the year and that might throw them off into laying eggs in the middle of summer i've heard but all of my igs and rescues laid in either feb. or march
my 2 year old iguana has laid 20 eggs its her first time about 48hours ago and has only eaten 4or5 raspberrys is this normal i need to get her calcum levels up but she wont eat any greens ive dusted what she has ate but help!!!!!!!!!!
yea she needs so be able to eat, it might have taken everything out of her, alot of them will die before, during or after laying. does she have a real good uvb light? you need to keep her warm and you should really take her to the vet they can give her a calcium shot and vit.B to get her eating, also she could have an egg that broke or can't come out and if one breaks she will get a massive infection and die so really rush her to the vet soon as you can for an xray to see if theres more
Hi What did you use to keep the sand warm? I see a cord for something? I've spokent to you before about my iggi Norman and every year comes along, I get nervous for her. She's 5 years old and has never laid any eggs. She's getting fat, but not losing her appetite yet.
hi, yea i talk to so many people to try and help them lol i used a 55 gal. rubbermaid container, 450 pounds of clean play sand, some water mixed in as i poured in the sand to make it clump and after about 150 pounds of sand i added a brand new under tank heater, i wasn't sure if they could get really wet or not but it seemed to be sealed good and it worked great. u have to heat the sand to 86-87 degrees or they might not use it. then a hole cut in the lid to let her in but not much sand out
allot of times iguanas will reabsorb every year but if she gets real heavy, wide and starts digging around allot and not eating she might be wanting to lay, this usually happends around jan. to march takes 60 days to make the eggs and 60 days to hatch but please dont mate iguanas are there are 750,000 babies imported every year for pet stores and theres just not enuff good homes out there for even 1% of them. hope this helps
Yes, thank you. I actually spoke to you over the phone a couple years ago when Norman was really big. She never stopped eating so I'm guessing she was ok. I checked on her very carefully every day and gave her a 20 min bath every day. She gets plenty of excersize and is healthy, the only thing is that she is very skiddish and I have a dog that she doesn't like and gets nervous. I've been keeping the room quiet.
Hey I was wondering if an Iguana needs a mate to make eggs.I'm not trying to be funny or anything but I have an iguana thats 3 months old and I want to know if she needs a mate when she gets older to have eggs.
No they don't need a mate to make or lay eggs, sometimes they will just do it because its egg season, usually around the new year on is egg season and oct. on is mating season but it risks their lives every year to lay eggs and they must be extreamly healthy before and you must have the right set up or they will become egg bound and die. they import 750,000 baby igs a year for the pet trade at 45 cents each per 1000, so no money it in and not enuff good homes for the ones out there now...
Nah,I'm not interested in the money.I was just wondering.About how much would a good set up cost? And do you know any trusted websites to sell me the right equipment to set up what I guess is called a "egg laying home" or something like that.I don't want it to die so I need to know where to buy the best stuff on the internet and about how much it would cost me.
well off hand i dont know of a egg laying set up anyone sells but you can make one yourself fairly easy, i used a 55 gal. box with 450 pounds of clean play sand with a new under tank heater i added 100 pounds of sand then the heater then as i added the rest of the sand i added water too just enuff to keep it moist so she can dig in it, run the cord up the corner and cut a hole in the lid big enuff to go in & out then sand the edge so its not sharp, u want it to be 86 degrees inside always
that big amount of sand will keep the temps it must be 86, 87 degrees and you will need to add water each day or two and mix so she can dig a hole, put ALOT of newspaper under the box to catch extra water if the box gets a little crack and under the newspaper put a piece of linoleum to protect the floor under the box, it must be in a corner or kinda hidden so she will feel safe cause they want to hide their eggs, you can add a basking light over the lid to get her used to the box
you have to get her to like it and she will dig in it for a while and if you get the heat and humidity right she should like it and use it but watch her is she won't use it and she won't lay then if she can't reabsorb those eggs and gets in distress then she will need to be rushed to a reptile vet whos spayed female igs before to get those eggs out before she dies because everyyear they can die if they get egg bound thats why the egg box is so important to get right but mine loved the egg box
Now a days their is only one site i trust and thats reptileuv, com cause they pay more to use the best materials and have their products hand made and tested before they sell them and are in it for the animals and doing rescue and research while other companies are only in it for the money and sell cheap dangerous crap made in china.
they dont sell an undertank heater right now i used the zoomed but use only a new one so its sealed good because of the moisture u add to the sand, hope this helps
nope i put them in a jar of rubbing alcohol to use at educational talks i do with my iguanas at libraries and reptile shows, but if someone does have an iguana that lays eggs they should put them in the freezer after the female leaves the egg box so they don't hatch because they import 750,000 baby iguanas a year for the pet stores and we don't need anymore cause the two groups i'm in cant find a good home for the 30 we have in foster care and the 30 more on a waiting list
Thanks! She was such a sweet heart, it was the first time one of my igs laid eggs cause we don't want to breed them as they import 750,000 babies a year already but it was almost as hard on me as it was on her lol
They just wouldn't stop coming! after 20 i was quietly freaking out who knew they could carry so many eggs. I know alot better now thats for sure!
before I was born.... interesting

Can she become egg bound?

how do u know if the eggs are infertile?
FUNTOFALL50 1 year ago
@FUNTOFALL50 its easy, cause she was not bred with a male
MrBinty1440 1 year ago
I was wondering... My ig is only 1y 5m old and apparently she is gravid, should I get her fixed? I've never laid eggs with iguanas, only smaller reptiles, so I wasn't sure of the safety level. Thanks:)
And also, will she be sad afterwards like she's missin' out on laying if she is fixed? Like menopause?
chroslyn 1 year ago
@chroslyn yes if you can find a great reptile vet who does this kind of operation ALL the time then do it cause u risk her life every year during egg season, but only allow it to be done by a reptile vet who does this op all the time & only in the morning so they can watch her breathing all day, then u MUST be allowed to take her home that night & watch her breathing for 12 hours after the op, keep her very warm to get the gas out of her system
MrBinty1440 1 year ago
@chroslyn let her belly hang cause the stitches will hurt for weeks, after 5 to 7 days i put just alittle neosporan on the stitches to make them soft & so the skin doesn't pull & hurt so much but no sooner then 5 days or it could not scab over right, do not let them get wet & they will need to come out in about 6-8 weeks
MrBinty1440 1 year ago
@chroslyn or you can make her an egg box, but it will need to be exactly right of she may not use it, she could reaborb the eggs especially if shes not been mated but if she gets egg bound she will need to be rushed into the operation or die. the box will need to be hidden alittle, packed with clean topsoil or play sand, use a brand new undertank heater to heat it to exactly 87 degress and add enuff water so it will pack so she can dig holes
MrBinty1440 1 year ago
@MrBinty1440 Okay thank you so much:) I'll start with the box

hey i loved my iguana but not enuff to make eggs wiff her! lol
having 1 baby would be enuff for 42!!!! OMG haha
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
wow i hope my ig doesnt lay eggs anytime soon
SpartanAtom 2 years ago
they were empty eggs we dont breed them but yea if they are healthy they can start to make eggs after 1yo during the first part of the year during egg season it was scarey i never thought she could have so many in her! i was freaking out when she reached 40 and was all but begging her to stop lol now a days all our rescues are fixed cause mating season is a huge strain on them & they can die if not kept real healthy with vet check ups every year.
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
lol i would freak out after 10

I had the nightmare of an eggbound iguana, rushed her to Dr. Spendel....the eggs were fused together and she never would have been able to lay them, I believe Darry has the eggs now. I was lucky, I got her to the vet in time to save her life, she is healthy and happy and as fiesty as ever. The photos of Charly's spay is on AIC in the photo section.
denisesdragons 2 years ago
hi denise, yea wow that is scary! i know so many igs die every year from things like that cause most people who get them can't or dont care to spend the money to get a serious problem like that fixed. i know by the time babygirl laid so many eggs she had scared me cause they just wouldn't stop coming i thought at the time she would maybe have 10 or 20 at most.... i was lucky she didn't have a problem. yea the AIC group is such a great resorce!
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
42 eggs! wow! I am so scared of the day when my Igg may become gravid...She exercises, eats great, and is healthy- so I am hoping for no problems...still very nervous!
madhoshi7 2 years ago
yep always have to worry each year but using a wide variety diet of fresh foods, using megaray uvb lighting also makes a difference and you can use Nutribac DF to help them digest and get the most out of their food & it helps get rid of salmonella then once a year full check up really helps, but you can also get them fixed its best when they get gravid the first time but only by a reptile vet who does them ALL the time
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
it was a 55 gal container with 450 pounds of sand made alittle wet to clump up so she could dig
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
well if its a planned operation maybe $300 or so but if its an emergency like if she became egg bound then anything up to $1000 to save her. just make sure the vet does this operation ALL THE TIME not once in a while, then only allow it to happen in the morning so they can watch her breathing all day then u MUST be allowed to take her home & watch her alnight they can stop breathing up to 12 hours after the op, u will need to get her a soft pillow to lay on or two rolled up towels for her belly
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
to hang inbetween cause it will be very sore with stitches that will need to come out in about 6 weeks also know that unless they get every tiny bit of the ovaries out a tiny bit can reattach & start to growing eggs again the next year only she wont be able to lay them so a 2nd op will be needed to finish the job, its rare but it does happen so make sure u have an expert vet do this op, all of our rescues are fixed at NC state U & never lost 1 or had a regrowth yet in almost 10 years
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
how old does the iguana have to be to lay eggs?
iguana71495 2 years ago
usually about 1 1/2 years old and on some years they might lay just cause its egg season or they might reabsorb them or they can become egg bound then you have to get them operated on real quick to have the eggs removed or they will die
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
At what age do iguanas become sexually mature and how do you know when she is about to lay her eggs?
lboogie1338 2 years ago
anywhere from age 1 on.... the female will continue to get a bigger belly while slowing down on eating and then later on stopping all eating about 2 or 3 weeks before, if you think they have eggs then you should goto the vet for an x-ray to be sure then u must build a very exact egg box for them to use it must be just right or they can become egg bound and die if not operated on to get the eggs out and spay the iguana
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
did u guys then sold the babies ? cuz i know u guys can take care of all these iguanas
briangurl24 2 years ago
nope they are empty eggs cause we don't mate them cause they import 750,000 baby igs every year so we dont want to add to it cause we can't find enuff good homes for our rescues now
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
wow, those are very big eggs for 42 of them to fit in her O_0 crazy how that works
how many of them survived...or grew up enough to sell idk how to word it w/o sounding mean
not4emo 2 years ago
i know i had no idea she had so many and how they could all be in one iguana! even if she was 5 foot long. well they were empty eggs she just laid cause it was egg season, we dont breed them we do rescue and rehab and try to adopt out unwanted igs
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
thats even cooler*the rehab and adopting them out*
i wish i had a house so i could do that
^_^
how many do you have now?
not4emo 2 years ago
3, Binty and Gizmo who were given away as carnival prizes as babys they were 2 of 6 we helped save out of the 200 they gave away and died with in a week or two, and i have Woody who was caught running wild in Va. beach back in 99-2000 & couldn't be rehabbed into a nice pet he is a very wild male so he is one of our sancturary iguanas & we'll keep them for the rest of their life, we have more in our Nc. foster homes too but i just have 3 myself, i adopted Binty but foster Gizmo & Woody :)
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
Any idea on how to get a new born iguana. I've wanted one so bad and I thought it would be neat to raise it from that young and I think the bond that would be made between us would just be awesome.
xxzachlxx 2 years ago
i'm not sure but alot of really young ones dont make it thats why the ones in the stores are usually 4 to 6 months old or more and even they can die too since they dont get much care while at the stores usually but it can take one from a couple weeks to a year to gain their trust but then you have to work on it the rest of their life to keep it but if you do they can be such a great pet but afew can't deal with being a pet like my Woody then its harder to live with them but their still great
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
Honestly it's to hard to tell right now but I don't think Rex is the wild kind which makes it alot easier for me considering he's my first of hopefully many iguanas. I think he's starting to rely on me for protection too :)
xxzachlxx 2 years ago
yea when they feel your safe to be with its the best :)
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
Hey i just bought a new born iguana last week. Its only 8 inches long from head to tail. Anyways your local animal store should have them but you have to ask what day they will be importing new iguanas
lboogie1338 2 years ago
Actually I was able to get one too. He's incredibly tiny and his length doesn't do him justice because for his size, his tail is just ridiculous, it's almost 3 times longer than he is snout to hind legs. He's about 12 inches long though
xxzachlxx 2 years ago
yea like babies they can have odd size body parts as they grow up lol
MrBinty1440 2 years ago
hey jimmy!
did you sterilize the play sand?
I'm making a nest box for my iguana this week (she is starting to show signs!!!)
laydlo 3 years ago
nope i bought it new at lowes its cleaned of stuff in it for use in kids play areas, you can add dirty for less weight just dont use potting soil cause it has alot of those little white beeds they are not good to get in your igs mouth and she will be digging and getting some in her mouth the main thing is its big enuff and heated to the exact temps 86-87 degrees with enuff water added to make it clump so she can dig holes might want to me it feel hidden so she will relax & use it Good Luck!
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
Well, over the past couple of days I've called about a dozen different local animal hospitals and the lowest estimate for neuter/spay was roughly $200. I think I'll get a male and I'll get him neutered. i just hope that if i get him neutered it will prevent most of his potential aggression. i'm also wondering if males still show their breeding season colors even if they're neutered? i think the orangish-red highlights look cool.
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
sometimes Binty still does and Woody does alittle
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
Trust me, i have considered all of these things and more many times and the only thing that really concerns me is whether or ot to get it spayed/neuterd and to choose between a male or female
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
oh ok yea, well you know each has their own personality & alot of males can bond with a male owner long as you dont get a female ig that would come between u two like with my male godzilla & now binty we have a great bond now babygirl came between me & godzilla but binty hates my female rescue gizmo so me & him are close males are usually more impressive but if u get one that doesn't like u or don't want to be a pet nothing is wrost then a male ig but female igs bond with male owners good too
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
I know, but I'm only 15 and I'm not exactly rich... I already have other reptiles that I enjoy, but I'd really like an iguana. My parents have told me that I am responsible for all of the costs of the iguana because they pay for most of my other pets. They definetely wouldn't want to pay for an iguana to get fixed, and I don't have that kind of money. I'm stumped because i don't want to have to deal with mating season agression or possible egg binding in and iguana.
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
How about save up & build or buy a large set up like 6'x6'x3' buy the megaray combo lighting, uvb meter, temp gun, nutribac DF & herptitvite. Find a good reptile vet who doesn't charge alot then once you have ALL of that find a local rescue in your area who will adopt an iguana to u cause you'll already have the setup & vet first then see if they will help u get it fixed or have one already fixed u can adopt, i know all our rescues are already fixed & ready to be adopted but u have to be ready
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
for them, as we check that u have a set up, read & know everything u need too & have a good reptile vet then we try to find one u like & that likes u & in afew weeks if it works out then great if not we try another one, i started out with smaller lizards who still need vet care & worked my way up to an ig also u have to think are u going to college, military, will u be able to keep this animal for 10-20 years? u cant have them in some cites & apartments when u move out then what?
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
its very hard on igs to lose their home & owner so its just something to think about cause ur 15 so you oculd be moving out in 2 or 3 years to do what, go where cause we see alot of parents stuck with an iguana they dont want cause their kid had to leave it to go to college. just something to think about
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
yes i have thought this over thoroughly and when i go to college i will probably go to a local one so i don't have to live at a dorm and i can just live in my parents house until i graduate and then move on.
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
try looking on petfinder, com & see if theirs a ig rescue near u & see if you can work with afew to see if u like 1 & it likes you then try to foster it & adopt it if ur both happy they really grow on u or get a baby & treat it great spend a ton of time with it & socialize it good & hope for the best usually if your giving them everything they need they will love u for it just be ready incase its a girl & one day needs an egg box or to be fixed, many times they lay or reabsorb the eggs
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
i converted my closet into a cage already... everythings ready except for the iguana.
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
is there any other alternative besides fixing her? that seems pretty expensive 400-700$?
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
nope thats all, thats why i tell people you can spend $1000 a year on them iguanas are expensive exotic animals and need alot of care i have spent more then that on ones who got sick or were a rescue in a years time if think about it first if its too much then dont get an iguana maybe a BD would be better but all pets need a regular vet check up once a year. i mean alot of people spend that much on video games or other stuff so its not that much to spend on such a wonderful animal
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
i want to get a female but i dont want to have to provide a nest box... what should i do?
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
well you cant tell a boy from a girl when they are a baby so you would have to adopt a little older iguana and get her "fixed" or find an iguana who is fixed and up for adoption.
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
why is fixing an iguana so much more than fixing a dog or cat?
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
cause they are an exotic animal so everything costs more & more dogs and cats are done plus they have to really be careful as reptiles dont do well being put to sleep its very easy to give them too much & they stop breathing cause they are reptiles not mammals i know you want an iguana & i'm glad your asking alot of questions first cause thats always the best thing to do but if right now you can't afford all the care u really should wait until u can for the animals sake
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
i know you would feel real bad if you got one & got attached to it & then had to watch it die cause it got egg bound or hurt & you couldn't afford a vet, its why when i was younger i had smaller reptiles that still needed vet care but not so much other stuff & i worked my way up to an iguana & even now i worry about Woody he just had an operation to fix him & now he might need another cause he may have a tumor in his leg or cancer so i might have to work more to make more money for his vet bills
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
it might end up costing my $1000s to save him or if he has cancer i might not be able to do anything to save him but next is Bintys turn for his yearly check up & he is alittle over due cause i've had to spend so much on Woody lately it gets expensive real quick sometimes you can spend $1000 at the vet in no time & they still need food, lighting, heat & everything everyday, hey even little lizards can get sick & need alot of vet care too & should be checked for parasites in them
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
when will an ig start laying eggs?
craxyness 3 years ago
usually in the winter time around jan. to march and around 2 years old on even if they are empty eggs
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
what if you don't provide a place for the female to lay eggs?
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
like i say they will get egg bound and die
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
do female iguanas lay eggs every year automatically? what's better to get: a male or female iguana
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
its possible every year after 1yo or they can reabsorb the eggs or become egg bound and without an operation to get the eggs out they can die
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
why? does this only happen if it has previously mated with a male or it just gets eggs automatically?
CallxMexDavid 3 years ago
cause its egg season they dont need a male to make eggs only to have babies
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
this happened in 1998?
yugiohcollecter12 3 years ago
yep
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
nice video, very imformative. i dont get my pets from the pet sore, i adopt from shelters, i got my orange tabby almost a year ago from a no kill shelter
muslimia99 3 years ago
ahh yep all of our cats and dogs were strays who found our door over the years and the last cat she would sleep with my first iguana they were good friends u can see on 1 of my videos and she lived to be 23! Godzilla lived to be 10 & we have many more up for adoption in Nc. on petfinder, com just look up Nc. and triangle iguana rescue always looking for a good home for them :)
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
She's beautiful :) Glad all the eggs got out okay.
Psstimnot18 3 years ago
Thanks :) yea she was my Babygirl after all lol and yes we were lucky she did so well but she was such a healthy girl. Now we fix all our rescues with the help of the vet school at Nc. State U where they train students to become good reptile vets. :)
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
what did you do with the eegs
xavierxman123 3 years ago
well i didn't let my igs breed cause theres already way too many to find good homes for now but some i put in a jar of alcohol to preserve and take to talks for people to see how big iguana eggs are and the rest i freezed and then thru away.
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
So wait if you want a female, then they'll have to lay eggs every year? They do that even if you only have one? LOL I didn't know that!
ShadowFoxBlade 3 years ago
well they can lay every year but it doesn't mean they will lay every year, some years they might not make eggs, some years they might reabsorb them but it only takes once to become egg bound and then without an emergency operation they can die a very painful death and also die if one egg gets broken while inside them they will get a huge infection and u end up with either a dead ig or a HUGE vet bill if they can even save her its always a gamble
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
do u have to feed he igunas that hatch or do you sell em?
sawu101 3 years ago
oh no, as it said in the video the eggs were infertal so no babies, we do iguana rescue & they import about 750,000 baby igs to north america every year so they have been a throw away pet for over 20 years now & we can't ever find enuff good homes for the ones we have so i sure don't need 42 more babies! lol i just show her laying so people can see you have to make them an egg box very exactly they way they want it or they won't lay & could die so igs are very high matainance & expensive to own
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
Aw you shouldn't breed iguanas. There over bread and there the most dumped reptile out there.
Louistogies 3 years ago
yea i know thats why we have been doing iguana rescue and education since 1999 and on the video and in the info it says 42 infertal eggs so they are empty some igs will lay eggs anyways and i wanted to show the box and this is what to expect maybe every year if you have a female iguana but i'm glad you know good enuff to say not to breed them :)
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
Oh I'm sorry about that, next time I'll make sure to read the right hand box. Glad to hear your not a breeder!
Louistogies 3 years ago
who the hell would wont to dump such a beautiful animal.
ducati298 3 years ago
huh?
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
lol u said they were the most dumped animal. and i said who would dump such a beautiful animal :)
ducati298 3 years ago
oohh ok i get it, i didn't know if you thought babygirl was a rescued ig or not. i had her since she was a baby. yea its a shame what people do to these beautiful animals. i was once called to come get a little 2 foot iguana who was locked in a little rabbit cage and thrown in a dumpster, i had to clean all the cardboard she ate out of her, teach her how to walk and to stop when she came to an edge and not fall off. she had every color in her even a tiny bit of purple on her neck
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
well good ya for the work u do :)
ducati298 3 years ago
42 eggs!?! is that NORMAL!!!!
joezilla1994 3 years ago
yep anything between 12 and 60 but over 60 and it may kill most igs unless they are full grown and extreamly healthy
MrBinty1440 3 years ago

joezilla1994 3 years ago
yea i was watching it the other night! lol GODZILLA ROCKS!
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
what was that at 8:41.
kevin15man 3 years ago
maybe the video tape i use way back then had a bad spot on it
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
strange question, couldnt really tell from the vid but during the egg laying did you notice if she went through a tonic state, with some reptiles you find that they go complitely out of it and you can actually touch snakes or some crocs without them responding.
not saying you should do that though, lol, thats just cruel.
jen567mws 3 years ago
i looked for that & nope she never went that deep she was so wore out from not eating for her last 2 weeks she had to sleep on me everynight to get comfortable but i'll say she was busy laying but alert that i was there but i did try to back off so i wouldn't worry her but i did have to dig the holes for her as her front legs were so wore out from digging for weeks as she practiced making holes & hiding them if u look on the video u will see her move her head to look at me when i rasied the lid
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
wat do u do with the eggs do u eat then or let then hatch???
pronikka16 3 years ago
nope they were infertal cause theres too many baby igs out there now to find homes for so sometimes like with Babygirl in the video they lay eggs just because its egg season and theres only fluid in them so i use them for educational talks in a jar of rubbing alcohol so they dont rot. but some people in the countries they come from do eat the iguanas and the eggs but i'd reather have them as a pet but thats just me lol
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
I've been breeding beardies for some time, and I now have two juvenile iguana's who from what I have noticed look like a male and a female, I would love to breed them so I'd like to know should I be doing anything now while their young to prepare? Their not baby baby's their about 2 - 2 1/2 years.
KatelynsChannel 3 years ago
WOW! Great video! I can tell you really love her and take great care of her!
angellovescats 3 years ago
Yep she was my Babygirl, i had many 7 years of training in her & she did shows & talks all over the east coast, to Ca. & back she loved all the attention maybe 70,000 people in her life she was very smart but just before her 10th bday she got cancer & it took her really fast the vet couldn't do anything for it and she died in my arms an hour after we got home from the 3rd trip to her vet... there will never be another one like her but i'm glad she didn't suffer to long but i still miss my girl
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
cool video thanks for posting it on my video comment so I can see it! :)
IndicaSatifa 3 years ago
how the hell do you know if a ugana is a boy or a girl when you bearly get one
APETETIC23 3 years ago
well when they are a baby you can't really tell but some long term owners are able to tell after observing the animal for a good while 30 min to an hour and just by the way they act and move but even then its not 100% i have been able to tell afew times like when i got Babygirl after 45 mins something just said it was a female and she was, but after about 1 yo they can start to show jowls alittle and males have spikes on the inside of the thighs see my photo album @ myspace,com/lizardtail1
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
hey, i have a ~4 year old iguana, just found out she is a female and ive never seen her lay eggs, never found any either. recently she started walking around my apartment in an agressive manner, looking for a place to hide I guess. She keeps going under my bed and behind the tv but i didnt know why so i put her in her cage for the night. is she getting ready to lay eggs now?
envision91 3 years ago
it is possible the only way to know for sure is an x-ray at the vet but if she is and doesn't have a place to lay those eggs she could become egg bound and die so i'd run her in for a look cause alot of females die this way. good luck let me know how it goes
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
how old was she??
is it painful for them while laying their eggs???
9165518 3 years ago
like it says in the title she was 2 yo. and yes its hard on them but they kinda go into a trance almost like a croc and just start laying but they still stay alert enough to know whats going on around them and they like to be hidden when laying.
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
why did you do this
web124 3 years ago
well she was my 2nd ig way back when i was still learning how to care for them and every year females make eggs for egg season and they either lay them, reabsorb them or become egg bound and need to be operated on or they will die. I didn't let her and my male mate because i didn't want babys but when i found out she was making eggs i read on how to make a box good enuff for her to lay the eggs in and i filmed it cause it was the 1st time i had a reptile lay eggs
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
i was just starting to learn enuff to do help others learn and then the group i was in started to do iguana rescue and educational talks and i thought this would show what to expect if you have a female iguana and how hard it is to make a box and get it right and also how hard egg season is on them so you must keep them very healthy and a yearly check with a vet, so this video is apart of my volunteer work.
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
We tell people they should not breed iguanas cause they import 750,000 babys every year to north america already, they are very complex yet wonderful exotic animals that are easy to love but very hard to care for and expensive too.
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
are they plain eggs or are there baby iguanas in them?
killian694 3 years ago
like i said at the top i didn't let them mate cause i didnt want her to have a bunch of baby igs i wouldn't be able to find good homes for so they were empty eggs

Hey Jimmy!
Nice vid-glad you made one with an IguaNERD lay'n Eggs:^D
I was wondering Iggy has (layed?) eggs 3 times. First about 15, 2nd about 10 and, 3rd about 7. I heard that if there is no male around that they may quit laying eggs? BTW do all iggs lay there eggs at the same time of year??
seanjohn151 3 years ago
well sometimes they will lay or reabosrb the eggs inside whither theres a male around or not. babygirl laid the eggs in the video only once every other year she reabsorbed. usually they lay around jan. to march but since alot of babys come from ig farms now its hard to say cause they could be hatched at odd times of the year and that might throw them off into laying eggs in the middle of summer i've heard but all of my igs and rescues laid in either feb. or march
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
my 2 year old iguana has laid 20 eggs its her first time about 48hours ago and has only eaten 4or5 raspberrys is this normal i need to get her calcum levels up but she wont eat any greens ive dusted what she has ate but help!!!!!!!!!!
DARRYLWILDE 3 years ago
yea she needs so be able to eat, it might have taken everything out of her, alot of them will die before, during or after laying. does she have a real good uvb light? you need to keep her warm and you should really take her to the vet they can give her a calcium shot and vit.B to get her eating, also she could have an egg that broke or can't come out and if one breaks she will get a massive infection and die so really rush her to the vet soon as you can for an xray to see if theres more

LeonardoSasuke 3 years ago

MrBinty1440 3 years ago
that big amount of sand will keep the temps it must be 86, 87 degrees and you will need to add water each day or two and mix so she can dig a hole, put ALOT of newspaper under the box to catch extra water if the box gets a little crack and under the newspaper put a piece of linoleum to protect the floor under the box, it must be in a corner or kinda hidden so she will feel safe cause they want to hide their eggs, you can add a basking light over the lid to get her used to the box
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
you have to get her to like it and she will dig in it for a while and if you get the heat and humidity right she should like it and use it but watch her is she won't use it and she won't lay then if she can't reabsorb those eggs and gets in distress then she will need to be rushed to a reptile vet whos spayed female igs before to get those eggs out before she dies because everyyear they can die if they get egg bound thats why the egg box is so important to get right but mine loved the egg box

Frwedum 4 years ago
hahaha no way, thats why they were unfertile eggs
MrBinty1440 4 years ago
so you just threw them away or what???
Emygurl10 4 years ago
nope i put them in a jar of rubbing alcohol to use at educational talks i do with my iguanas at libraries and reptile shows, but if someone does have an iguana that lays eggs they should put them in the freezer after the female leaves the egg box so they don't hatch because they import 750,000 baby iguanas a year for the pet stores and we don't need anymore cause the two groups i'm in cant find a good home for the 30 we have in foster care and the 30 more on a waiting list
MrBinty1440 3 years ago
